Lyrics:
As I sat sadly by her side
At the window, through the glass
She stroked a kitten in her lap
And we watched the world as it fell past
Softly she spoke these words to me
And with brand new eyes, open wide
We pressed our faces to the glass
As I sat sadly by her side
She said,”Father, mother, sister, brother,
Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,
Soldier, sailor, physician, labourer,
Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest
Earth and moon and sun and stars
Planets and comets with tails blazing
All are there forever falling
Falling lovely and amazing”
Then she smiled and turned to me
And waited for me to reply
Her hair was falling down her shoulders
As I sat sadly by her side
As I sat sadly by her side
The kitten she did gently pass
Over to me and again we pressed
Our different faces to the glass
“That may be very well”, I said
“But watch the one falling in the street
See him gesture to his neighbours
See him trampled beneath their feet
All outward motion connects to nothing
For each is concerned with their immediate need
Witness the man reaching up from the gutter
See the other one stumbling on who can not see”
With trembling hand I turned toward her
And pushed the hair out of her eyes
The kitten jumped back to her lap
As I sat sadly by her side
Then she drew the curtains down
And said, “When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your
brothers
And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated”
At which she turned her head away
Great tears leaping from her eyes
I could not wipe the smile from my face
As I sat sadly by her side

Absolute masterpiece...and the piano parts...are just a killer...Nick Cave is one of the last greatest musicians today..
And,you are absolutely right. ;-)
Amen, from the Heathen Child 🙏🖤 !
Una favolosa di Nick ..
🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
This is true.
Thanks for this playlist. A man with heart and intelligence sings. This has become so rare in our times.
Huge Nick Cave fan. He is so talented. I saw him twice live and it was mind-blowing.
This whole song is pure lyrical genius.
So trueeeee....
One of the best songs in the world.

I just thought that the first time I heard it! Stunningly beautiful 💯❤❤
Totally agree
One of the best album in this fucking Amazing world i think
Nick Cave is a vocalist as well as performance artist. He never needed complicated choreography, you just see him being himself and it’s a work of art.
It's a pity artists like Nick Cave, Bowie, Lou Reed, Scott Walker etc. never get the status of national treasure in their lifetime because of their controversial past. Ironically they all share certain roots with Jacques Brel, a performer, poet, song writer, who WAS called a national treasure in his lifetime (after the passing of Edith Piaf).
That's why i like him. He show all tunteet.
Masterpiece!! One of Nick's many.... 📿 👑✒️ (King Ink!!)
We wish we could be these people. That's the sign of a true rock star, when you see them and want to be them.
I still feel that Nick Cave is one of if not definitively the best song writer of my generation. Of course this is incredibly about perspective, but for my life experiences of of perceived tragedy and despair, Mr. Cave and his band wizards. (Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey are amazing musicians). I wish that I couldn't relate to the music. I wish I could just enjoy the art as it is, just art. Cave's lyrics just flow effortlessly like silk across ice. Thank you for contributing to the soundtrack of my life. I wish I had provided better source martial, not that you know or even care. But thank you, your music and art are amazing.
I do think that this is his masterpiece, with its incredible lyrics and stunning melody. the song is both saddening and relieving at the same time.
full of anger, disapointment, expectation, love, resentment, compassion, sorrow while questioning religion, humanity, existance whatsoever.
full of issues, that's my Nick.
Yeah i agree, but there's some other commentaters after your comment who say this is as boring as shit, can you believe that?
Antipodean33 well, nick cave's music is kind of an acquired taste, I'd rather have it stay this way ;)
+elcnshn It is. When I first heard Nick's music in the 90s I didn't care for it much. Then it clicked in about 1997, and I've been obsessed ever since. For me, there's nothing else like what he does. He's one of the greatest songwriters ever.
word!
I absolutely belive it is. In a way it expresses in 4:37 life and the world. I can't judge in general, but for me it is the most important song amongst hundreds of very important ones!
My cousin died first week I was in the army. The whole year turned my life upside down. I saw dreams, prophecies that came true. I cried on my future ex-wife arms drunk: I don't want to see dreams anymore.
All that horrible, horrible year, I found and listened: No More Shall We Part.
The time, the place, the record, the sound, the sorrow, the cry, all of it comes back to me with a single piano tune. I was a young man twenty years ago. I will never be the same. Thank god I have this record to remind me what was so terribly difficult, and what was worth all the while.
this particular song makes you understand how music can be such a powerfull force in the life of a person... Nick cave is himself, indeed, an amazing force...
One of Nick´s MASTERPIECES...
Rediscovering Nick Cave after too many years, loving the music.
I recently had a pleasure to see Nick Cave and Warren Ellis live in The Royal Albert Hall. It's amazing how three musicians plus three choir people can create one of the best live shows I've seen in my life. Totally beats down the soulless modern crap they called music.
"She said, father, mother, sister, brother
Uncle, aunt and nephew, niece
Soldier, sailor, physician, laborer
Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest
Earth and moon and sun and stars
And planets and comets with tails blazin'
All are there forever fallin'
Fallin' lovely and amazin'"
The best stanza ever? Possibly, quite possibly...
Fill my room Mr. Cave, I hope I'll hear your voice even when I'm dying.
"I hope I'll hear your voice even when I'm dying"... you said it all... I wish it was possible to hear Cave and Curtis at the same time.
Gökay Sarı mm
Careful with the wording, though. You've got to remember that this is the man who also made Murder Ballads.
Demek öyle bebişim
Yes , me too.
One of the most beautiful songs that Mr. Cave had gifted to his fans. 🖤
a lovely conversation between two people who believe in different truths..
Coolest man in the world :D
There are a lot of very difficult things going on in my life (I live in Ukraine in a front-line city), and I often listen to Nick’s songs, they help me in the midst of chaos.
Nicks lyricism is so intricate , it’s otherworldly

As I sat sadly by her side
In the she sees what hes point of view and cry, and he sees her point of view and smile...
So the point is he tricked her with the 'possible' untruths opposite to the ones she was seeking to possibly implant in his viewpoint (which is flawed eitherway and based on ego). Its not that he necessarily thinks what he is saying to her is right. Its a game or feels futile even to him so having her come round to 'his thinking' feels empty and beside the point of the subject of not telling eachother what to think.
He does it in an ungodly way; conscious of his actions whilst somehow still recognising the human aspect in the absurdity of the subjects bredth and scope (god religion christianity, religious values and views) and also in his own actions in the moment.
With a human heart the character that observed the other 'influencing' thoughts in someone else about something they both know nothing about does it to the other one. The tears arent agreement. The tears and the smile make it as circular as the subject itself. It almost becomes a past time to be dancing together with the subject and begins to lose its meaning. Passing the cat around with mutual affections on tje subject (?) as time soldiers on regardless of their dance. Cats no longer a kitten maybe.
...and as he says she was WAITING FOR HIM TO SPEAK (never noticed this) to tell her what to think!!!! When he did what she ast and participated in the mechanical absurdity of the conversation and giving her what to think, he smiles because they just both had a conversation about just that where she tried to convince him of her mirror...or window (to the world). "Then she threw the curtains down (curtains of knowledge. Enlightenment) and said "when will you ever learn". Trying to end the argument by taking away his view of the world or his point. He pushes her back, he wins but the prize is empty and meaningless to him abit like the conversation. They are the absurdity they see.
He selects words so carefully and so precisely theres always more too see. Also sarcastic "and with our eyes open wide...we pressed our faces to the glass".
They arent agreeing as some have interpreted. He's saying "look at us thinking we are wise trying to feed eachother what to think" while he tells her or asks her more importantly about the concerns he has about telling people what to think or having a place or meaning to do so. The expressions in the end are tears, smiles, and sadness. But its unclear about what. Smiling at the absurdity of the fact hes saying what he believes but doesnt know if he believes it? Or if its even true, hes questioning everything. Is the character smiling at his 'counter influencing'? Because of the crying? Crying because she agrees....or crying because she doesnt agree and it hasnt been of comfort or 'use'. Possible frustration from her, (they couldnt wipe the smile off their face or keep it in whilst they sadly comforted or participated in the past time).
Its interesting that in the end the meaning is abit unintelligable. As to how the character is intending their actions to the other in the end. Hes giving an ending....but it feels false... kind of like theres what to think. Like the whole thing. Hes also a musician so hes used to 'saying what he thinks' and people thinking he is 'telling'. He doesnt believe everything hes saying because hes learning but there is no end to the questions or the arguement and it all rolls round again.
Ironically i feel like the curtain is let down on the scene and we never know really what it was all about, And also ironic for me to have sat interpreting something about a circular argument that doesnt mean or not mean anything. Haha. Oh Nick X
I want to interp the video in some way but it takes so long...its really tempting..i think (hahha oh god lols) what the basic idea is...natural things 'simulated' on a screen. Hes in and out the shadows. Seeing self from more than two angles. Cat scratching in flashing images. I want to go down the rabbit hole but maybe not today....HAHAHAHAHHA feels like the whole point of the song whilst wanting to do it...HAHAHAHHAHAHA.
@@viciouscircle7802 Don't complicate things. This song is thematically similar to Cave's "murder ballads" with overtones of Eve in the garden of Eden. She has "brand new eyes open wide," and in her innocence, she sees the beauty, the wonder, and the good in the world. Her trust in him is manifest as she passes the kitten to him. And he corrupts that innocence, betrays that trust, with a focus on the ugly and unspeakable. She tries to defend her ignorance; but it's too late. He (the snake) has bidden her taste of the fruit: She now sees the world's evil and can never regain her lost innocence. And he smiles smugly at his success.
@@viciouscircle7802 I would like to know more of your thoughts about this song.
@@pricklypear7516 Hum yeah i did over complicate it, i was high lol. I see where the garden of eden comes into it now, i dont find cave easy to interpret for the religious reasons. I see how the cat is trust rather than a subject. I will have to listen afew more times lols.
An absolute Masterpiece!!!!!
An incredible masterpiece... I listened to this song countless times all these years. Still got the goosebumps.
This is one of his I can listen too a hundred times and still enjoy as much as when I heard it the first time. He is brilliant. Ellis violin is amazeing in it as well.
I'm obsessed with this song, perfect song, amazing lyrics, Nick is a genius...
I'm speechless. Masterpiece!
Nick Cave. No words needed. He is the only one who always seems to know what's wrong with me and how to fix it. Thank you for being born!
oh my god. first time my mind has been completely blown by a song's lyrical craft in a very long time.
May I suggest "Goodbye and Hello" by Tim Buckley for lyrical genius ?
pure poetry
The Legend!
One of his best.
Damn. 😢
I'm listenning to this tune since yesterday for the 50th time
Maybe it's a the eccho of the sorrow I feel for him, as he just lost his 15 years old kid...
It still hurts me!
Fell to his death on acid.
Such beauty. I'd die happily to this.
The most beautiful song ever written. From the piano to the lyrics via the drums n guitars.
Empathetic Musician
No one in the world does this anywhere near Nick Cave.
Musician
Psychologist, historian, scientist, theologian, ‘governmentarian’, husband, father, relative, friend
Preacher, teacher, comforter, listener
BESTEST Musician!!!
The boss. The One & The Band.
Audio visual masterpiece.
...favorite lullaby of mine child...the anthem of mine life...Ž prvi nije bit, poslje prvog je prvi uvijek bit....Nikad dalje a nikad bliže...endless i nakon svih godina
This is a philosophical discussion between two intimate people. Cave questions the womans view on the world by pointing out the flaws in human nature and the woman responds by telling him not to be so negative, and not to take it all upon himself. In my view both points are right and I think both parties are in part convinced by each other, which is why there is a reversal at the end. Cave is smiling and the woman is crying: they both see the others point of view!
Thats my opinion anyway
Excellent.
Moving😭😭😭😭
I see it this way too. A song that means a lot to me.
It could be whom is holding the cat is simply happier as the cat sees little for philosophy
@@lemonscourge27 I would not shy to point the cat has a lot to do with happines. Little lovely furball teachers.
one of nick caves best for sure.
Man. What do people think this song means? Is it about being responsible for your own feelings, not being emotional dependent on others? This song has me entranced.
Love this whole album to fucking bits.
“No more shall we part”, this song happens to be first on, is perhaps one of the best albums I’ve heard recently.
Nick voice make me cry everytime.Vocal espression, interpretation especially in this beautiful and sad song.
how can somebody dislike this....
A brilliant man...a brilliant song!
This song touches my soul
Nick is real artist!
Incredible song now in 2024 and back in 07 when I first found it on the early days of RUclips.
this song is as close to perfection as a song can be
Just recently got into Nick Cave. Every new (to me) song is a delight, but this is beyond anything.
If you love Nick's songwriting and you haven't read his books, please do yourself the favor, they're AMAZINGGGGGG
No
one of the best songs ever written
Шедеврально!
Probably the best song ever written about fentanyl. So prescient!
My favourite Nick Cave video. Really powerful song.
I love this song more than any other in NC's catalogue of brilliant songs simply because it applys itself to myself and my wife of 22 years with such comedic truth!
Fantastic, I really believe that Nick Cave is one of the best musicians of the whole world (sorry for my bad english)
One of my favourite Nick Cave songs. Ihave about 30 in total!
Same mate!

This song feels like a warm embrace.
I hope you meant "warm"... :)

I used to listen this song when I am in depression to get better. I am ok now, but I still listen this song to better. I mean always better :)
♥
This song touches me on such a personal and emotional level I can’t even put it into words
Today is the worst day of my life... and i need to listen this song. Masterpiece.
You wrote this nine years ago I'm sure you had way worse days, did you?
My personal best my Mr Cave. Divine, as the video, his best on both.
Magic
Modern Shakespear.
I could not wipe the smile from my face, as I destroyed her image of a perfect world...
Oh God how I love his lyrics
i just love this tune.
This song and its meaning is an enigma to me....
Exquisite
In the last day and a half I've been listening to this album a hundred times, it's brilliant. I'm in love with this video as well.
Astonishing... One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, for sure. By the way, it seems that 115 people has no heart... I find it impossible not to love this jewel ❤❤❤
so beautiful...
The man I love for years. Everyone already knows about it ...except for him. He will never know about it. Maybe it's wrong? I do not know. I had the opportunity to tell him about it but I knew I would never do it. He finally turned his back on me as a fan.
I knew it was going to happen sooner or later - I preferred earlier :)
I have often feared for him over the years.
I love as an artist and a person.
Hey, Nick Cave 🌿🌿☘️
Regards and warm hugs from Poland !
If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:
The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.
pls take your medication - peace bro
music is my medication - peace
There is no God bro, but it's good that we can cherish good music like Nick Cave
Jesus fucking Christ xd this is the quote from Kurt Vonnegut Jr Are we really that shallow? ofc not. Peace
Probably up to Bosko what he wants on his gravestone..
Such a sad but beautiful song 😍
I hate and love this song with all my heart.
Für Dich, Opa Hans!
Love! 🖤
Amazing song
Best song by nick cave ;-) can't stop listening to it
I'm amazed by the change of voice in relation to the latest songs. I got to knew Cave as the latter.
Nice!! go for the Tender pray record! then go forth at Murder Ballads or this songs album. Truly moving artists
Thank you for your beautiful songs Nick. God bless you, and your family.
This song is much more deeper than life it self...
Found Nick Cave while incarcerated in a state prison for ten years. I'm a bad seed.
this is so enormously beautiful
J’adore❤️
Como siempre Nick, me conmueve.
Religion philosophy heart mind love mystery divergence come together ending on this note indefinable restlessness. A mystic song.
My heroes: David Bowie, Nick Cave and Neil Young
Masterpiece.
The "conversation" in this song is so close to the dynamic between my boyfriend and I lmao, but I think we've both became more well rounded people for it.
Also I think people overlook the cat's role in all of this... 😂
perfect
This is pure magic!
