Nick Cave is a vocalist as well as performance artist. He never needed complicated choreography, you just see him being himself and it’s a work of art.
It's a pity artists like Nick Cave, Bowie, Lou Reed, Scott Walker etc. never get the status of national treasure in their lifetime because of their controversial past. Ironically they all share certain roots with Jacques Brel, a performer, poet, song writer, who WAS called a national treasure in his lifetime (after the passing of Edith Piaf).
I do think that this is his masterpiece, with its incredible lyrics and stunning melody. the song is both saddening and relieving at the same time. full of anger, disapointment, expectation, love, resentment, compassion, sorrow while questioning religion, humanity, existance whatsoever. full of issues, that's my Nick.
+elcnshn It is. When I first heard Nick's music in the 90s I didn't care for it much. Then it clicked in about 1997, and I've been obsessed ever since. For me, there's nothing else like what he does. He's one of the greatest songwriters ever.
I absolutely belive it is. In a way it expresses in 4:37 life and the world. I can't judge in general, but for me it is the most important song amongst hundreds of very important ones!
I still feel that Nick Cave is one of if not definitively the best song writer of my generation. Of course this is incredibly about perspective, but for my life experiences of of perceived tragedy and despair, Mr. Cave and his band wizards. (Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey are amazing musicians). I wish that I couldn't relate to the music. I wish I could just enjoy the art as it is, just art. Cave's lyrics just flow effortlessly like silk across ice. Thank you for contributing to the soundtrack of my life. I wish I had provided better source martial, not that you know or even care. But thank you, your music and art are amazing.
My cousin died first week I was in the army. The whole year turned my life upside down. I saw dreams, prophecies that came true. I cried on my future ex-wife arms drunk: I don't want to see dreams anymore. All that horrible, horrible year, I found and listened: No More Shall We Part. The time, the place, the record, the sound, the sorrow, the cry, all of it comes back to me with a single piano tune. I was a young man twenty years ago. I will never be the same. Thank god I have this record to remind me what was so terribly difficult, and what was worth all the while.
There are a lot of very difficult things going on in my life (I live in Ukraine in a front-line city), and I often listen to Nick’s songs, they help me in the midst of chaos.
this particular song makes you understand how music can be such a powerfull force in the life of a person... Nick cave is himself, indeed, an amazing force...
I recently had a pleasure to see Nick Cave and Warren Ellis live in The Royal Albert Hall. It's amazing how three musicians plus three choir people can create one of the best live shows I've seen in my life. Totally beats down the soulless modern crap they called music.
"She said, father, mother, sister, brother Uncle, aunt and nephew, niece Soldier, sailor, physician, laborer Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest Earth and moon and sun and stars And planets and comets with tails blazin' All are there forever fallin' Fallin' lovely and amazin'" The best stanza ever? Possibly, quite possibly...
This is a philosophical discussion between two intimate people. Cave questions the womans view on the world by pointing out the flaws in human nature and the woman responds by telling him not to be so negative, and not to take it all upon himself. In my view both points are right and I think both parties are in part convinced by each other, which is why there is a reversal at the end. Cave is smiling and the woman is crying: they both see the others point of view! Thats my opinion anyway
I'm listenning to this tune since yesterday for the 50th time Maybe it's a the eccho of the sorrow I feel for him, as he just lost his 15 years old kid...
Empathetic Musician No one in the world does this anywhere near Nick Cave. Musician Psychologist, historian, scientist, theologian, ‘governmentarian’, husband, father, relative, friend Preacher, teacher, comforter, listener BESTEST Musician!!!
Man. What do people think this song means? Is it about being responsible for your own feelings, not being emotional dependent on others? This song has me entranced.
The man I love for years. Everyone already knows about it ...except for him. He will never know about it. Maybe it's wrong? I do not know. I had the opportunity to tell him about it but I knew I would never do it. He finally turned his back on me as a fan. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later - I preferred earlier :) I have often feared for him over the years. I love as an artist and a person. Hey, Nick Cave 🌿🌿☘️ Regards and warm hugs from Poland !
This is one of his I can listen too a hundred times and still enjoy as much as when I heard it the first time. He is brilliant. Ellis violin is amazeing in it as well.
...favorite lullaby of mine child...the anthem of mine life...Ž prvi nije bit, poslje prvog je prvi uvijek bit....Nikad dalje a nikad bliže...endless i nakon svih godina
I love this song more than any other in NC's catalogue of brilliant songs simply because it applys itself to myself and my wife of 22 years with such comedic truth!
Nailed it!! Strange how you picked my 3…. As an aspiring (?) guitarist, my yearning is to play like Neil. As an aspiring musician, I yearn to be Bowie. The rest is Nick.
Astonishing... One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, for sure. By the way, it seems that 115 people has no heart... I find it impossible not to love this jewel ❤❤❤
The "conversation" in this song is so close to the dynamic between my boyfriend and I lmao, but I think we've both became more well rounded people for it. Also I think people overlook the cat's role in all of this... 😂
Absolute masterpiece...and the piano parts...are just a killer...Nick Cave is one of the last greatest musicians today..
And,you are absolutely right. ;-)
Amen, from the Heathen Child 🙏🖤 !
Una favolosa di Nick ..
🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
This is true.
Thanks for this playlist. A man with heart and intelligence sings. This has become so rare in our times.
Incredible song now in 2024 and back in 07 when I first found it on the early days of RUclips.

yes. it's simple. raw. yet beautiful still.
I do think that this is his masterpiece, with its incredible lyrics and stunning melody. the song is both saddening and relieving at the same time.

Yeah i agree, but there's some other commentaters after your comment who say this is as boring as shit, can you believe that?
Antipodean33 well, nick cave's music is kind of an acquired taste, I'd rather have it stay this way ;)

Huge Nick Cave fan. He is so talented. I saw him twice live and it was mind-blowing.

This whole song is pure lyrical genius.

Fill my room Mr. Cave, I hope I'll hear your voice even when I'm dying.
"I hope I'll hear your voice even when I'm dying"... you said it all... I wish it was possible to hear Cave and Curtis at the same time.
Gökay Sarı mm
Careful with the wording, though. You've got to remember that this is the man who also made Murder Ballads.
Demek öyle bebişim
Yes , me too.
