Boatman's Call is a stunning and captivating piece of work from Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds. It is quite a long way from the noise mongering of his early seminal band Boys Next Door and his early records with the Bad Seeds. Nick Cave grew a little more accessible with each release throughout his discography and his greatness culminated with Boatman's Call. A beautiful album of faith, hope, hopelessness, frustration and despair. On "People Ain't No Good", Cave expresses just how disappointed he is with people. He croons hopelessness and despair on "Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?" yet faith and hope resonate on "(Are You) The One I've Been Waiting For?". Here he longs for love as it draws near. Finally, It is the classic and somber "Idiot Prayer" where Nick Cave feels life slipping away and senses his end. A startling song. Arguably Nick Cave's best record.
