NIKE PEGASUS 40 - THE BEST DO IT ALL RUNNING SHOE IN 2023? - INITIAL REVIEW - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new NIKE PEGASUS 40, a brand new version of the popular running shoe for "ALL RUNNERS"
This is the top selling shoe for Nike perhaps aside from Panda Dunks, i joke.
How does this 2023 update of the popular runner work out this time?
I have loved the Pegasus model since 1991 when i got my first pair. This is an upper update only, but hits the spot for a responsive shoe with good versatility.
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.
Let me know your thoughts and opinions down in the comments.
This is a shoe i bought with my own cash, no company or organisation are paying me to make this video.

Honestly, my favorite thing about the 40 coming out is how cheap the 39 has become.😊
39s are so cheap now, it’s hard to pass on. I put 150+ miles on my 37s and I’m starting to really enjoy the 39s more now.
@@michaeltran2743 now 40 are cheaper then 39 wth?
@@johnsick6230you can find 39s for about 55€ on sale here
And the 39 is a bit lighter
😂 good one!
Just got my Peg 40 to 100 miles and had done 250 in the 39. Did rather feel got the same shoe again which often no bad thing. Not sure there is much to get excited about in any daily trainer but I have kind of gone off ultra soft shoes at least too often so the Peg 40 is dependable and it feels nimble enough despite not being overly light on the scales. I too got mine at 20% off so £90 or so and that price is hard to beat. Yeah agree you can’t really compare it with massive stack soft shoes that cost nearly double. Don’t get the Pegs if want that.
It’s a good peg. As you same more of the same
honestly I'm a very casual runner, I sometimes pick it up and get up to 20km runs, but then I never run again for a year or two and I always pick Pegs up, had the 36, now the 40 and they are perfect for me. Lots of cushioning, feel smooth and soft.
Yeah it’s pretty good for that middle of the road vibe
I’m going to pick some up to keep at work. First time in year’s I’ll be buying some with support as I have been running in zero drop Merrels for years. These Peg 40 look good. Great review.
@@dhldt1021hey can you give an update on these? Do you like them?
I love my peg 36s, are the 40’s similar to them?
@@BobRoss-wm3lc 40s feel softer/more cushioned to me and kind of more comfortable to wear, otherwise the same. Keep in mind that my impression is also comparing the pegs as they are now, I don’t exactly remember how the 36s felt when I got them. But I’m happy with my choice!
There´s certain shoes that never hurt a shoe rotation. It´s nice to have a fresh pair of Nike Pegasus, Reebok Floatride, Puma Velocity, Brook Ghost, Saucony Ride... that you can put on and just do the daily miles, a speed session or even do a longish run at an easy pace without any problems...
It’s a good go too if you don’t know what you need for a specific daily session
"The dexterity of a seasoned seamstress".
You're spoiling us with your poetic turn of phrase Mr Ed.
CONGRATS 40K!
Thanks so much! 👍🏼👊
Nike finally released the shoe I've been waiting for years, they gave us the perfect shoe with the Pegasus 40! (in this colorway only mind you). Not for running though, for casual use in the summer! The shoe in this video is the best looking Pegasus ever I think. It is also is a very comfortable shoe to step into, the new upper (though heavier) really hugs the foot well. It is cushioned enough to walk around, sprint to catch the train and make some sudden direction changes in doing so. I don't know about you but I wouldn't feel safe doing the same in the Invincibles. Puma's, Saucony's, etc just look too much like single purpose shoes. So there, the perfect casual summer shoe to take on holidays (where you can also use for a couple of runs, no need to pack extra running shoes). It's quite good for running too yes (though yes it cannot compare with my Puma Deviate Nitro 2's).
It’s a super looking shoe. Love the off white clay like midsole
Those aren't walking shoes at all imo, they hurt really bad when walking, I don't think people usually walk with running shoes (at least 39s)
Thanks!
Much appreciated my fine fellow 👍🏼👊
They upgraded the lock down in the pegasus 40. I love my pegasus 40" Very Comfortable and Stable "
I got the Peg 39 Grey Slate colorway for US$60. It was so worth it, bought another all black pair for my boy just to go to school. Totally no complaint. Very light, good for casual wear and good for any runs.
39s destroy my feet while walking although they're comfortable for running, I don't think those are made for casual wearing at all
@@heroe1486 you're right. I've since discovered they're not good walking shoes at all. Strictly for running. So strange
@@heroe1486how can they destroy your feet for walking but not running…?
The Pegasus is durable, versatile, and inexpensive.
It looks sick and thats why i bought it for pennyboarding, i add brake pads with anti-scratch pads + drip glue x)
Thanks! Are you racing/running the Martock 10k this year buddy ?
Defo mate!
@@EDDBUD see you there. These local events need our support. I’ve seen 3 triathlons cancelled this year locally. Let’s keep
It local
I've seen a lot of people shitting on the pegasus for being boring. It's barely over £100 and I'm going to run 1000 miles in it. I don't need it to be exciting, I need it to be comfortable, durable, and visually appealing. It ticks all the boxes.
There needs to be a space in the market for a do it all shoe.
It’s a great shoe for everyday stuff. Wear mine for gigs when I’m stood up for 3 hours and they work a treat!
Hey Edd. Another great review. To be honest if the same people who are fans of the Pegasus 37, 38, 39, 40 tried on the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 and or had a chance to run in them... they would all be converted to the Nitro 2. The Nitro 2 is what the Pegasus 40 was supposed to be.
And very much cheaper too! You get an arguably better shoe at a much cheaper price.
@@smilingsunflower-q9p but it’s still puma. I wear Nikes for status 😂
@@michaeltran2743nikes for status? I didn’t know there were status wars amongst the peasantry
@@michaeltran2743 🤔 what status does Nike bring anyway?
Can’t really say it’s about status, more like looks, almost can’t argue the Nikes looks much better than the Puma Nitro and others 😎
Thank you for saying that about the Peg. It is what it is and it does the job it is designed to do. The peg doesn’t need super foams or “excitement”. It is a Reid and true do it all shoe for everyone. It doesn’t need to be more than that.
I don’t think we will see a non “zoom air” unit in the Peg. Air is a key Nike technology and the Peg is the last Nike running shoe with it (different tech from the air pods in the AF). I do think we will see an evolution away from React though.
I dove into all of this on my channel.
Nike know what makes the peg work. It’s got to tick many boxes.
I just ordered a pair in the “England” blue colorway for $84 US direct from Nike. I want them just for kicking around in. Honestly I don’t really need them for running but it never hurts to have a classic pair of Nike’s in the shoe closet for when the mood strikes you.
They hit the spot comfort wise for just about anything.
Pegasus excellent off road shoe. Also great for walking.
Yeah it does lots of things pretty well. As such it’s always an option
Thanks for reviewing it. Its a yearly tradition, you cant skip doing a review of the Pegs Edd
I have to say, it’s broken in a bit now and they feel superb!
I bought this color setting as well (DV3853-100.) I think it is the best color of Pegasus 40
It’s superb! I even wore them to a musical performance. Stood up for 3 hours and my legs are feeling good!
Tried it at a demo and agree with everything you said. Definitely can move quickly in this shoe. Enjoyed it for my 6 miler. Don’t think I’d use it for long stuff. However solid versatile shoe and can be a refreshing change from super soft shoes.
Yes for up to perhaps 7 or 8 miles perfect. Does many things well
It's probably still a very good shoe like the pegasus 39, it's just disappointing that they made it a little heavier. I would have preferred if they had just continued selling the pegasus 39 for another year.
I think it’s the added materials in the upper. Bit odd they keep switching up up then down again
Happy Mother’s Day ❤ I just ordered the 40s with 25% off, give them a try after the 38s 👍
Pegasus is my go to running shoe as a heavier runner. What would you recommend for a heavy runner looking to up mileage and training for a marathon?
Don’t discount the Lightboost from adidas or even the Boston line
The Pegasus is a shoe that works for me since ever but I will wait for FlyEasy version. I almost did not get the Peg 39 last year because I was the same old thing and I wanted to try something else. That changed when I tried the FlyEasy model in a store !
Can you explain what the point of fly ease is?
@BobRoss-wm3lc it is easier to put the shoes on your feet and only need one hand to do the job. I did not need a FlyEasy for that, but I got it anyway because it gives less pressure to o the top of my feet, and it was relaxing to some times use them instead shoes with normal laces. Also, it could be a good option to put them on or take them off quickly if you are doing triathlon or going to do squads barefoot at the gym. In other words, FlyEasy is practical, even if it does not have the best lockdown ...
@@MiracleWarriors ok thanks that’s helps me a lot.
Didn’t enjoy the 38 but these seem to have a nice pop . Got them in the Black Friday sale so very happy
Update?
@@BobRoss-wm3lcthey’re ok , not my favourite for running In but they are great gym shoes and good for the treadmill
@@Lordwonga. ok, I’d probably only use them for walking anyways so there’s he good for that right
Nice little Beatles quote at the end love it ✌️
I have this shoe and I like it. Out of curiosity, I tried a more cushioned shoe but I quickly developed knee pain, so back to the Pegasus. I like the feel of the shoe. I hope Nike doesn't turn it into yet another squishy mess of a shoe.
Good firm option this one with some response.
My pegasus history...
My first pegasus is the 38. Bought it after looking all the reviews stating it as the trusted workhorse...
Then I bought the first Novablast. Blew away the peg by miles in fun and comfort. Stop using the pegasus after 100km. Will never buy any pegasus in the current similar incarnation.
Bought the puma deviate 2 recently and enjoying it.
Not sure I class the novablast in the same place. It’s more a do it all shoe. Never felt that about the nova.
Just bought a couple of pairs today, let's see how good they are! Love the reviews mate! Where did you get the cap, I have most of the colours, but not volt. 😊
I was on the Nike site a while back but only for a short time
I also noticed that Pegasus 39 is much lighter in weight than Pegasus 40 which gives it a smoother ride on the road.
Yeah I’m don’t know where the saving is but it’s quite a bit lighter
Thanks for this review Edd. The Peg really is the jack of all trades for average runners like me😅
Yes a Swiss army shoe.
I got the peg 39 for $58 and they served me rlly well but I want to try the vomero
Purchased a pair of 39s today on discount. Hope I'm not going to regret not buying the 40s
Gave up on the Pegasus line after the 38 debacle. Not coming back until they do something different with it, rather than just changing uppers. Floatride energy and Velocity Nitro are miles better and cheaper IMO.
The 38 wasn’t the best. Loved the 39, much better version with slightly softer foam
If they do something "different" with it, it probably wouldn't be a "pegasus" any more except in name. It would be a different shoe and you'd be buying a different shoe.
Actually, not coming back 😅
And yet not being far away - sticking now a while with its Trail sibling.
I prefer being off the road & it works best in the winter!
the 39s were my first Pegs. super comfy but not a fan of the bubble at the front.
I quite like the air units in this one
It has a Dutch Clog feel, and the personality of a Soviet era Moscovite.
Feels good on foot to me. Quite low profile compared to other shoes
I find the 39s a little too firm in the heel, had even thought about piercing the rear zoom pod to see if it softens them up! They feel alright after the first 15 mins but my heels are tender the next day.
I think lots of people like the firmer shoes. Not everyone wants super soft foam
@@EDDBUD Yeah I suppose they’re trying to cater for everyone, there’s plenty of soft shoes out there. Would like to see them putting react in Jordan 1s or maybe ZoomX airmax 1s😊
@@laurieallen2995 They did fool with the Jordan’s in the comfort line
@@EDDBUD oh the zoom cft or the “formula 23” , that should be standard in Jordans, you could wear them all day after a 20k ! On another note are guide 15/16 firmer or softer than peg39s?
Man i just coped a all black pair ive always had ankle pain not any more these shoes are the most comfortable shoes ive ever owned o wear them at work its like im floatin
Glad they are hitting the spot
Wore the Peg 39 over 10km at the weekend. I'm 6 ft 3 and over 90 kgs. Would highly recommend it or its successor if you are a similar build, for daily use, tarmac, light trails.
It’s was mighty warm later on. Glad you go the 10k in earlier.
@EDDBUD haha if you're tall and slightly fond of a chicken kebab like me get a pair of Nike Pegs!
@@outerheaven8797 🤣👍🏼
I’ve given up on Nike and am basically in ASICS all the way now.
Just put a 10 miler in the superblast. Omg what an amazing shoe
Thank God a more firmer shoe. Firmer shoes are hard to find these days.
Thanks Edd.
I appreciate you tuning in 👍🏼👊
Edd - Nike Zoom Fly 6 or Asics Novablast 5? Price being equal, which is the better overall shoe?
Quite different shoes. The zf6 is a more up tempo offering with the plate. The novablast more versatile but a master of none
Which one is better for lifestyle Pegasus 40 all black or black white ?
Probaly the all black to negate cleaning them up
Just can’t see how this is better than the 39, it’s basically the same shoe, but for more money
... and more weight.
Some want the new thing. It will so be on a little discount
peg 40 or vomero 16? for context ive just started running; i run every other day 30min avg. 3.6km but i do intend on running longer distances in future.
The Vomero for me
Ia have magic speed 3, u think its good to take pegasus 40 for easy, long, daily running?
Man I’m in the shop 😅
Bought it, and I ran 20min Easy, first impression is good 👍🏼
Is the tongue really short on the 40? My 38 has longer tongue. Bought this 40 and it just arrived, all-black, and the tongue seems short and a bit stiff on the heel area. Where’s your’s made? Mine is from indonesia. 38 feels comfortable and snug on my foot as soon as i wear it. This one doesn’t. And that tongue i don’t kkow if i got a faulty shoe. Wanted to try it out on a run but they may not accept a return if i use it already. Disappointed is my first impression of the 40 as soon as i wore it. Looks nice though.
Haven’t really felt the stiff heel. Tongue is spot on
At this rate i wouldn't be surprised if a set of Pegasus 41 weights in at 1kg.
Got a little extra cash in my account this month so I'd figure a nice way to to blow it is to buy another pair of running shoes. I'd like to buy my first super shoe as an enthousiastic but heavy, tall and slow runner for using them during the summer road 3k to 10k races.
Currently doubting between the Adios pro 2 for 99 or the Deviate elite V1 for 110 euros.
any thoughts?
The adidas is a bit more aggressive and less stable. The Puma is a good do it all racer
Would you guys run a 20 miler with the Pegasus 40? and why ?
Not for me. Good daily shorter range shoe.
Did I miss you comparing the fly wire of the 39 versus the system they have on the 40? @eddbudd
No flywires here. Maybe the extra wrap adds to the weight? It’s marginal on foot as is the lockdown change
@@EDDBUD OK, thanks Edd. I think they should only ever use Flywires but I am running a pair of 38s right now and those weird robbony lace loops seem to be fine.
Any idea what the best daily running shoe is please mate need something to last the miles and not chew up the carbon race day trainers 👍
Grab the velocity 2 or 3 from Puma. Can’t go wrong. Or the energy 4/5 from reebok
Probably my favorite level of cushioning. Asics gel nimbus lite and kayano lite may be just a bit better.
Yeah it’s a balance. Some complain it’s not soft. But soft isn’t always good
Nike Pegasus 40 or Asics Novablast 3 for dailys?
NB3 a bit more nimble. Though I like the air units in the Pegasus
Please tell any best alternative for Pegasus in Asics
Novablast perhaps. Or the gel nimbus isn’t al that far off
@@EDDBUD thankyou

Good bargain there!
Someone help me out here. I have always worn these kinds of trainers. However after a big injury ACL KNEE I am doing rehab are these kind of shoes good to use through excercise etc or should I get a flat shoe like converse ? Always hear the bounce shoes like this are no good

That’s the standard price in the us.

You know what Nike should start inventing is Nike Pegasus running shoes with replaceable treads. Once my treads are worn down I can remove them and put new ones. That way the whole shoe won't go to waste. 😉
Well, it’s not all that crazy
335g? That's close to the Exodus 11 that I used for trekking. If you have a Iphone 14 pro max you have brick on your feet and in your pocket.
I don’t have that phone and it’s 332g.

I would look at something a bit lighter like the Adios 7 or maybe the speed 3. The ghost is another daily type shoe and not all that different to the Pegasus
Are brooks shoes available in India? I have not seen any Brooks showroom in Bangalore at least till now

Reasonable. They don’t have a very high arch. Some Nikes do
Pegasus never changes, over rated shoe.. got the nitro 2, very happy with it
Not sure it is. You have to show empathy to what some might want. Not always what you want.
@EDDBUD just the truth Ed, nothing really changes with the pegasus... massive nike fan but pegasus is over rated big time, never tried the puma deviate nitro 2 before but got it reduced on the puma website.. impressed
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." 🙂

Puma Velocity Nitro 2 > Pegasus 40
Different shoes for different runs.
@@davidlynch9049 Nah. Exactly the same except Puma has better midsole, more responsive and Puma Grip is elite. Also considerably cheaper. The Velocity Nitro 2 is simply Pumas version of the Pegasus. They serve the same purpose

I predict next year you’ll review the next one and it will be boring.
I have already reviewed it. It’s ok
Hard Pass!
Nope, the best do it all daily trainer is the Puma Deviate Nitro 2. The Pegasus is mediocre, at best. Just an average shoe, nothing special.
That’s what many people want though. I have found it’s all about soft foam in the super shoes. Then people complain they don’t feel as quick!

Maybe a little overblown for that. There a lighter options out there.
