Throw in some industrial, glitch, vaporware, anti-music and found sound and we all just described Witch-House to a T.
I saw them on accident last year in Boise with Com Truise and Neon Indian. By accident, I mean I had no idea who they were. They were playing as I entered the venue. And the night progressed to be one of the best ever (no need for details), so Purity Ring hold nostalgic value to me personally.
I would have donated one or all of my bodily organs to be there.
This was a great moment in time for alternative pop music along with Grimes 'Visions' LP

This song played at a close friend's funeral last year after the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The second the music came on us friends of his just held hands and cried. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of him. But that's a good thing. Rest in peace Curly. We won't forget.

I lost my grandma 4 days ago. Can’t get her memories out of my head. She loved me more than anybody in the world. I hadn’t seen her since last 1 year, was gonna see in 3 weeks but she couldn’t hang on. I cry everyday, I miss her. Grandma I wanna see you when I sleep. She pleaded to me several times to visit her because she knew that she was on brink of her end. I will live with this regret and sorrow for not being there when you were leaving this world. She was the most active and kindest person ever. Never ever saw her angry whatsoever.

Really it could be about whatever..each person could interpret a song in their own way. How the lyrics and beat have an effect on you. The ways it all connects to you. What it makes you think about. Each person will have a different explanation for a song. Especially one like this.

Okay, so I'm gonna choose to interpret the lyrics a little more literally and I'm going to assume that it's about a poor homeless girl long ago. She speaks of her "grandma," who is most likely not actually related to her, because the first stanza is the girl unable to sleep, and so she visits grandma for alcohol to make her sleepy, and asks for her to leave the pulps nearby for if she's hungry (and I'm assuming it's old times because that context seems to fit the story best).
In the next stanza, she speaks of "air" that hangs beneath her bed and asks that grandma salts her bed skirt and stays close. She's clearly talking about some kind of spirit (perhaps her parents?) and she sounds kind of scared, leaving me to wonder if perhaps she was referring to a memory of someone or something that hurt her (which I'll get to later)
Chorus, she's singing about drowning, but she's also singing about someone using her dead floating body as a bridge to safety. the important thing here is who she wants to walk over her and why she's drowning in he first place. more on that later.
Next stanza, the meaning seems p obvious; she's gotten intimate with someone and feels guilty about it. The weird part, though, is her talking about weak legs and asking grandma to keep her powers safe. From this, we can assume that what happened wasn't sex, but rather particularly rough rape (which, if that's the case, probably came from her parents, and may be the bad memory that haunts her dreams) or prostitution (because she also might be an orphan and needs some sort of income, and also because her body would become sore and weak after taking a few "clients").
Last stanza, she says that she's been bad and asks grandma if she may see her while she sleeps, which I'm not 100% sure on what exactly she means, but I'm assuming that the girl has spoken/dreamed of a better life, either with better parents or with parents in general, depending on if her parents are dead or simply shitty at their job. This whole stanza, I mostly don't get (thoughts?)
Then lastly, chorus again, during which we can assume that she is "drowning" in the life she's living, and that she wants grandma to walk over her (sort of like "you saved my life so I'm gonna protect you even in death" kind of thing, I think) and she wants grandma to remain above her, because a motif seems to be grandma being pure and godly and the girl begging for help at all turns.
I think. It's late here, but any thoughts? I also think the song holds a metaphorical meaning beyond this (like the girl and her shitty life and grandma are metaphors for actual things in the singer's life) but I've never put too much thought into it. Lemme know what you guys make of it

The mysteries Megan leaves us with is part of her appeal to me. I think when she’s talking about drilling holes into her eyelids, it’s because she doesn’t want to go to sleep where she’s “unruly”. She feels safer when she’s being taken care of by her grandma. Maybe she develops powers in her sleep and they turn her into something she doesn’t like. Almost transformative. Or, she wants to be able to see her for her grandma’s own safety. The alcohol is there to coax her to rest finally, which she’s reluctant to do. I don’t know...but it’s amazing art!

I think for both this video and their heart sigh video, they should put a warning for flashing/strobe lights. I personally have a sensitivity to them and it makes my head hurt and my eyes blur really badly. If it affects me, I'm just worried that people with a seizure disorder could watch this without realizing and end up seizing.

My impression and also my information when they first came out is that this about a grandmother who had a family that was starving, and chose to drown her grandchild rather than have her suffer any more. There's a lot to look into, but this is what came out when they came out. I like the idea, though.
Some songs defy analysis, and that is good.
Drugs
there's interviews where she says it's about a parent figure letting go of the child as it grows up. but it's written with so much poetic metaphor that it could probably apply to a lot of things.
I think the video adds another layer of meaning: "Grandma" is nature. And the narrator, the girl in the video, is becoming monstrous in order to survive. Life is so hard, and it has always been hard. The pain and the violence seem meaningless. Children are born, and they die.
