I don’t know whether this is a song about drugs, a bad relationship, healing a good relationship, or emotional distress....whatever it is about, this shit bangs! Phantogram makes amazing music!
I always viewed this song as someone trying to comfort a loved one who suffered with anxiety, and not fully being able to understand why they go through what they do. It doesn’t have a lack of sympathy but feels frustrated with not being able to allow them to see reason. I’ve had friends with mental health problems and although the worst thing to do is to tell them to snap out of it it’s hard sometimes to watch them suffer and not have them see from your perspective that it will be ok and that they don’t need to struggle. It sounds ignorant, as I have struggled with patches of anxiety myself and knew I was unreachable to many in that period. To me this song captures that sense of not being able to get through and help someone the way you want to. Even bough from your eyes it may seem simple, it is impossible to see in an anxious state. It also captures how draining it can be deal with someone struggling with mental health problems (which isn’t to blame the victim, it’s just a fact in the same way it is draining to deal with someone with the flu. We will always do it, but it can be emotionally and physically exhausting.) i like that, because it’s imperfect, and I know we all go through times where we just wish our loved ones could stop suffering, just like that. I don’t think it is what the song is about, I’ve heard many say they think it’s someone who has anxiety and is trying to rationalise with themselves, which is also very probable and something I have done myself.

i work in a mill. i play songs like this in my head all day to make the time go by faster so i can get back to my family. it is quite the irony to me that all living thing's most basic instinct is to live, yet most all of us humans want our time to move by faster much of the time.
+pantheryou Man, you need to find a job you love. You shouldn't feel that way. Wanting time to move by faster clearly means you want change. Go seek it out!
This song will always remind me of moving out of NYC. All I think about when I hear it is how if I ever return, everything is going to be different. People will have grown and moved on without me, forgotten I ever existed, and how that terrifies me. But mostly, that even though I've found a love that compelled me to move out of the city, there is still that one person there that makes me think 'What if?'
I agree with, it is indeed a life changing experience especially when someone you know and love can make you happy enough to change your life like that in a positive way.
The dynamic and multi-layered sound Phantogram creates is both wonderful and overwhelming. Every time I hear Phantogram I just turn it up and lose myself in it.

I don't know if it's overthinking, but I believe this song is about depression and suicide. It fits with Sarah Barthel story: her sister committed suicide and during a concert she admitted that most of their songs are about her. The girl is blonde and looks a lot like her sister. The cube looks like the ghost of depression itself. It has a mantel because that represents an human being, a voice (or death itself) who judges and talks with her. She tried to make contact but she hurts herself (blood on finger), she didn't realize what it is going on yet. Once she tried to focus it, the cube falls into "water" (in her subconscious) and became deeper. So depression came to life again with a black mantel. Behind the girl there are 3 other people (3 is a multiple meanings number, in my opinion they could represent the fear of time she leaves behind herself, made of "past", "present" and "future"). Now comes the rope. She is trapped now. In the car death drives, on right there is the fear of "present time" because she is still alive but she is going to kill herself far from home and when she looks at that figure she is really frightened because she has fear to do it but now she cannot stop the process. This could have been a dream, but she wakes up in a bed in the center of the bedroom (not with a side at wall, that makes her feel anxious and like still dreaming). In fact she is floating and she is drived away. She tried to take control again on depression, embrancing the cube, trying to accepting it, but it has grown too much. Next she is again in car and she get confused when she watches herself outside running in "alternative way", "alive" in a way she is not drived out and she can go where she wants. That's the part in the song that says: "why don't you know you're alive". She is her alternative herself. She faced the cube depression that now is huge and enormous. She is determinated now. She focuses on it and clenches her fist, this action represents courage and strenght. So she manages to destroy the cube and with it all the 3 masked fears fade out. Then she returns home and she finally can take the cube because it is part of herself but she can control it again. Last, with cube in her hand she turns the head to you (who watch the videoclip right now) warning you about that story. Sorry for my bad English und multiple fails. I hope someone else got the same meaning out of this videoclip and that I'm not totally crazy. That's, plus, how I have read the lyrics: "I'm not your nervous feeling Each time we say goodnight" (she has fear of the night and she has fear to be alone) "All I have to do is shake, shake" (she has to awake from this nightmare and feel alive again) "Keep your body still" (don't hurt yourself, don't kill yourself) "I'm not your paranoia When someone's at the door" (I can't hurt you like your social anxiety does, please trust me) "There's a fast calling out of a throat of a body rising through the floor" (this looks like someone dying) "I'm not your fortune teller I'm not your spirit guide" (I cannot give you a way out) "I'm never like you" (I can't feel what you feel) "Uncomfortable to This is starting to fuck with my head" (and that makes me so mad, this drives me crazy) "All I have to do is shake shake" (I must remember to feel alive) "Don't you realize you're fine Or can't you see that you're fine And you know you're still alive You know that you're still alive Why don't you know you're alive Why don't you know you're alive "(why can't you believe me that it can be all ok?)
THE SONG IS ABOUT SELF SABOTAGE AND ESCAPISM. IT IS HOW MANY KNOW THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND TAKE THE ROAD OF VICTIMHOOD TO NOT ADDRESS THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. THE LYRICS ARE ALL ABOUT THE FEARS AND DOUBTS WE ALL HAVE AND HOW WE SHOULD NOT BE CO-DEPENDANT ON THOSE. THE SONG IS ABOUT BEING GROUNDED AND STILL IN YOUR MIND AND IN YOUR BODY.
I found a tea-mug behind an armchair in my living room yesterday. It was a bit grubby so I washed it and put it back in the cupboard over the sink. That was a quite rewarding and useful activity in comparison to listening to a Phantogram song.
Jaimee Bannister I probably won't in future. In all honesty, they are probably a decent band and make a lot of people happy. I just think they are a bit bland and they jdon't do what I want music to do for me.
tigerboy1966 Dear Lord. i wish you so much more happiness in, what appears to be the dullest of moments in your life. such a shame you don't have any taste in music or production. the sampling here alone, should be genius enough to drawn anyone with the minutia of moments in, but......ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh............to each their own. hope your cupboard is nice and fresh now.

That's crazy dude, that was only a day before my concert! They went from Raleigh to Charlotte back to back. Since then I think they've toured all the way to Texas already. :)
They just put out great music and it sucks we don't hear it on the radio. Radio sucks nowadays. People say music today sucks but that's not true, its radio that sucks and always playing the same 12 songs. Back in the day they didn't do that, back in the day they'd play good music.
this is one of those songs that sounds so familiar to me I just don't remember where I heard it from but I'm glad I found it again! cant wait to see this band open for kings of leon!!

+pantheryou Man, you need to find a job you love. You shouldn't feel that way. Wanting time to move by faster clearly means you want change. Go seek it out!
true, true. easier said than done though.
+pantheryou yo one step at a time. every step is one step closer to what you really should be doing. just keep taking steps until you're there.
Asiago JameZ i very much agree.
thats because youve conformed
Yup, definitely forgot how much I used to love this song, gonna be on repeat again
I'm very interested in your story now. What 'love' did you find outside the city?
Wow! I'm interested in hearing your story, too! You should start a blog!
The dynamic and multi-layered sound Phantogram creates is both wonderful and overwhelming. Every time I hear Phantogram I just turn it up and lose myself in it.
"Don't Move"
I'm not your nervous feeling
Each time we say goodnight
You picture buildings burning to the ground
From the basement in the streetlight
I'm not your drinking problem
A hole is in the sky
It's not your heart that you've been thinking of
Just the feeling like you're gonna die
All you know how to
Do is shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
All you do is
Shake, shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
I'm not your paranoia
When someone's at the door
Virgin fires calling out the throat of a body rising through the floor
I'm not your fortune teller
I'm not your spinning bed
I'm never like you
Uncomfortable too
This is starting to fuck with my head
All you know how to
Do is shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
All you do is
Shake, shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
Don't you realize you're fine
Oh, can't you see that you're fine
And know that you're still alive
You know that you're still alive
Oh, don't you know you're alive
Don't you know you're alive
Burning in the sky
All you know how to
Do is shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
All you do is
Shake, shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
All you know how to
Do is shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
All you do is
Shake, shake, shake
Keep your body still, keep your body still
Best band I've heard in years -- the only group to capture the zeitgeist in sonic form. NO ONE ELSE has even came close for... decades, probably.
Mind blown!
this song gets me so freaking hype. it needs to be on the radio. perfect summer song
One of my favorites
Uma das minhas favoritas.
You guys did a great job introducing your crowd to this song at Coachella been looking for it ever since that performance thank you 🙌🏽
I don't know if it's overthinking, but I believe this song is about depression and suicide.
That's, plus, how I have read the lyrics:
"I'm not your nervous feeling
Each time we say goodnight" (she has fear of the night and she has fear to be alone)
"All I have to do is shake, shake" (she has to awake from this nightmare and feel alive again)
"Keep your body still" (don't hurt yourself, don't kill yourself)
"I'm not your paranoia
When someone's at the door" (I can't hurt you like your social anxiety does, please trust me)
"There's a fast calling out of a throat of a body rising through the floor" (this looks like someone dying)
"I'm not your fortune teller
I'm not your spirit guide" (I cannot give you a way out)
"I'm never like you" (I can't feel what you feel)
"Uncomfortable to
This is starting to fuck with my head" (and that makes me so mad, this drives me crazy)
"All I have to do is shake shake" (I must remember to feel alive)
"Don't you realize you're fine
Or can't you see that you're fine
And you know you're still alive
You know that you're still alive
Why don't you know you're alive
Why don't you know you're alive "(why can't you believe me that it can be all ok?)
Thank you for writing all of this and taking the time. This song has been stuck in my head for weeks and I have a history of sh. ❤
THE SONG IS ABOUT BEING GROUNDED AND STILL IN YOUR MIND AND IN YOUR BODY.
aw man i can't believe it's already been almost 15 years
love this song
Julie Joycauser i would bet you are awesome then
I would bet you are!
Julie Joycauser Wow, is that yr real name, u obviously cause joy

but this song causes joy so does her voice and I LOVE her hair I have curly hair but if I didn't I would get her haircut :)
I found a tea-mug behind an armchair in my living room yesterday. It was a bit grubby so I washed it and put it back in the cupboard over the sink. That was a quite rewarding and useful activity in comparison to listening to a Phantogram song.
Don't listen to Phantogram then?
Jaimee Bannister I probably won't in future. In all honesty, they are probably a decent band and make a lot of people happy. I just think they are a bit bland and they jdon't do what I want music to do for me.
tigerboy1966 Dear Lord. i wish you so much more happiness in, what appears to be the dullest of moments in your life. such a shame you don't have any taste in music or production. the sampling here alone, should be genius enough to drawn anyone with the minutia of moments in, but......ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh............to each their own. hope your cupboard is nice and fresh now.
you don't... see it
***** FOR UR INFORMATION ANYTIME U HAVE TO SAY LOL JUST KNOW U R SAYING SOMETHING EXTREEMELY DUMB AND IGNORANT AND HATEFUL SO HAVE FUN FUCKING GIRLS AND BOYS U ILLITERATE HATEER GET A LIFE U LOSER
Just saw them tonight in Charlotte and was front stage watching them play this song!
*_Hands Down One of the Best Fucking Night's of my Life!!! :D_*
Exnomer saw them live last Friday night in Raleigh. amazing experience.
That's crazy dude, that was only a day before my concert! They went from Raleigh to Charlotte back to back. Since then I think they've toured all the way to Texas already. :)
I was at the Raleigh show too, so amazing!
PHANTOGRAM is so🔥🔥🔥! Seen them live twice. I love them so much.
when you accidentally discover a band and buy all their albums in 10 mins.
Mamdouh Bashour that part
Good taste of music you have.
Truth
DL via website using RUclips link. Free album heheheehege jk I don't do that teeehheheh
Just buy a Spotify subscription and follow them on there, plus many other artists that make the same style like Odesza and Washed Out
Sometimes when I like a song, I resist watching the music video because I like to retain the vision my own experiences create while listening.
damn just discovered phantogram, im really into their sound
They just put out great music and it sucks we don't hear it on the radio. Radio sucks nowadays. People say music today sucks but that's not true, its radio that sucks and always playing the same 12 songs. Back in the day they didn't do that, back in the day they'd play good music.
1:59 gives me chills everytime.
This song helped my friend who was coming down. Thank you Phantogram
I adore this band!
This song is amazing at making a dance party out of a panicking episode, and great for reminding people who are spazzzing out that they're okay
amo essa música❤ Love this song❤.
this is one of those songs that sounds so familiar to me I just don't remember where I heard it from but I'm glad I found it again! cant wait to see this band open for kings of leon!!
beautifully haunting.
These guys are off the scale, truly magnificent.

I saw Phantogram in 2012 at FPSF in Houston, what an incredible weekend I will always remember.
