Imagine , it was the first time Monica Seles defended a title since early 1993, meaning after three and a half years. Imagine the impact of the 1993 Hamburg attack, the time lost, when it was just an ordinary match like this one that she won here against the same opponent, Magdalena Maleeva!

I always thought about how she felt when she had to face Maggie because it could have been a trigger to recall that horrible day in 1993.

What I know is that when she faced Maggie again at Roland-Garros that year in 1996, three years after the Hamburg attack on clay too, she beat her very easily in 52 minutes, 6-1 6-1. Monica mentioned in the press conference in Paris , that she had slept poorly the night before the match, that her sleep had been very disturbed, and that sometimes she remembered what had happened during changeovers, but most of the time she stayed very focused and was very proud of herself for it . That’s what allowed her to win 6-1 6-1 at Roland-Garros that year, in '96, on the center court in the fourth round, and it's also what made the difference here at the Canadian Open, where she won the quarterfinal 6-4 6-2.

@@justtennischannel2 While it was definitely traumatic for Monica, I am sure it was traumatic for Maggie too, as she also would have horrible memories of that day. Yes she wasn't the one attacked but could you imagine being on court and playing the match while that happens. And considering she is FAR less mentally tough than Seles or any regular top 5 player to begin with, it is possible it wound up affecting her performance even more than Monica's in their ensuring matches, or atleast as much.
