Oh wow another gem, but this match holds some sad memories as was the day Monica got the phone call her father was near the end of his battle with cancer and she had to fly home as soon as possible 😢😢how she played at all is remarkable. Thanks for posting this match
Your welcome, really appreciate all these matches you post from a happy time in my life , love living through these memories again, Monica was my idol , she was the reason I started playing tennis and i followed her career from the first time I saw her on tv at Wimbledon in 1989 against Brenda Shultz.I used to have a huge collection of her matches on vhs but got rid of them awhile ago as didn’t have the space anymore but you have posted a number of matches that i haven’t seen . Sandrine was a tough opponent and her and Monica played some great matches.
I remember this sad fact: Monica didn’t play much during 98 clay court season. She flew back to her father’s sickbed right after this loss. After he passed away, she wore a whole black outfit, with her father’s ring on necklace, and headed to Roland Garros. 😢
Yes, heartbreaking… and Monica resurfaced a few weeks later and made it to the final of the French open. That was also Testud’s last win against her. Seles won all the encounters that followed (7 straight wins).

There is something about Monica’s 1998 ground stokes ❤️
