- It was the fourth Italian Open tennis championship for Sabatini, 21, and the second time in as many years that she beat Seles in the title match.
Sabatini, who also won this tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1991, trails Seles 5-3 over their careers. Seles, the top seed, won this tournament in 1990.
'It was a very close match, decided on just a few points,' Seles said. 'She was helped by luck and also played the tough points better than I did.'
"I always play well here in Rome; the crowd always helps," Sabatini said after the 1-hour, 50-minute match. "I'm feeling stronger than I ever felt."
The victory, worth $110,000, was Sabatini's fifth in nine tournaments this year. But she had to make an adjustment in her game to secure it. Early in the match, the Argentine made the mistake of allowing Seles, the No. 1 seed, inside the baseline to launch sharply angled winners, and Seles was able to race out to a 5-2 lead.
But when Sabatini began hitting high, bouncing ground strokes that kept the 18-year-old Yugoslav back, or rushing the net, things changed. Sabatini's new tactics were good for eight points, many at key moments.
The turning point came with Seles up, 5-3, and serving for the first set. Sabatini saved three set points to break her, held service, broke Seles again and held her service again, winning the set point with a deft drop shot that caught Seles deep.
The Argentine was unable to break in the seventh game, which lasted for 23 points and finally ended with an error by Sabatini. But she broke to draw to 5-4 as Seles double-faulted for the second time.
Sabatini fought off three set points in the 10th game before holding for 5-5 and won her fifth game in a row to claim the opener 7-5.
'I don't know what happened on those three set points in the first set,' Seles said. 'She played a few shots well, I got tight and scared. This is a tough tournament, but I hope to come back and win.'
Both players slowed the pace in the second set, but Sabatini picked up the pressure by going to the net and scoring repeatedly with volleys hit far from Seles' reach.
Unforced errors continued to bedevil Seles. The Yugoslav, who had not lost a set entering the final, was broken in the ninth game, on another unforced error, to trail 5-4. Sabatini wrapped up the match in the next game, with a sizzling shot netted by Seles.
Sabatini said changing the rhythm of play and bearing down in the second set were big factors in her victory.
'But it was the public that really inspired me,' she said.
"The match was close, but Gabby just played better on the close points," said Seles, who had won five of the six tournaments she entered before Rome. ''I stopped playing my game and turned defensive. I couldn't cash in when leading."
Sabatini credited her victory to her change of strategy, but quickly added: ''You have to have the shots to be able to do so."
Mr and Mrs Seles were such gracious parents congratulating Gabby and her family, applauding after match
Yes, Mr. Seles was the first to congratulate Gabby on the sidelines, even before her own parents. Wonderful people!
Gaby so lovable... everybody loves her... i love when trio steffi-monica-gaby ruled the world in 1987-1996
Crazy to think Sabatini would win only two more tournaments after this one, and she'd have to wait 2 1/2 years to get that first one. She was unlucky in that her peak coincided with Monica's. And after Monica's stabbing, the two players who really filled that void and entered their peak years were ASV and Conchita Martinez.
Gaby has said this match and the previous years final where she beat Monica even more convincingly were the best 2 matches she ever played.
Definitely on clay. Bud Collins though said the match she played to beat Graf in the semi finals of the 1990 Virginia Slims finals was the best match Gaby ever played. Tend to agree with that.
@@zeddekai agree only because she was more aggressive and served a lot better.
Thanks a lot, so nice to remember. More Seles please.
The pace of the court helped Gabi in Rome I think. It was slower than the French Open and it gave Gabi more time to set up for her shots. It also took some of the sting out of Monica's shots.
1:44:28 absolute class of Monica Seles’ dad giving Gaby a high five to congratulate her.
Karoly was a great nice man, passed away early in 1998 due to cancer
We can barely hear Monica's FOR-TEH, but it's there. Sabatini is such a Romantic figure, full of dash and beauty. No wonder she was a huge hit with the Italian and Spanish fans, and even more so the South Americans. They must have been all in love with her, and rightly so.
Great upload PertSnergleman, even tho she lost in this match!! The Seles in 1992 was really unstoppable. Keep the matches coming mate.
Are you able to get the video of the 5-set match Seles-Sabatini at the Masters championship in NY City, Madison Square Gn, Nov. 18, 1990? That was an extraordinary unique match of 5 full sets between a 16-year old teenager (who turned 17 just 2 weeks later on Dec. 2) against a 20-year old veteran that lasted 3h 47'. Any chance that you can get it: If not, is it because it may be a WTA video that they will not share with you (Very likely)?
The italains just loved Sabatini, they adored her. I think that gave Sabatini a home court advantage over Monica here. Too bad for Sabatini she couldn't do the same thing to Monica a few weeks later at the French Open.
Part of it might have been that Sabatini is an Italian name. And I'm sure her beauty played another part of it.
Very surprising Sabatini NEVER won the French Open and NEVER even reached the FO final! Gabriela really blew it in 1992 she was red hot beating Seles and Graf in clay court finals in 1992. At the FO Sabatini had a 4-2 lead in the final set blew that too. I think that loss to Monica stripped her of confidence. After this Italian Open win for the second time I thought Gabriela was going to win in Paris.
I think it wasn't just that loss to Seles at the 1992 French Open that hurt Sabatini's confidence. I think the loss to Graf at the 1991 Wimbledon finals also played a part in her demise. And I also think her loss to Fernandez at the 1993 French Open may have been the final nail in the coffin for her what with her being up 6-1, 5-1 with multiple match points in that match. But she seemed to be on her way back after the winning the year-ending championships in 1994 and then she won a tournament in Sydney at the start of 1995. But at Key Biscane later that year, she lost to Kimiko Date after being up 6-1, 5-1 with multiple match points. Watching Sabatini's reaction after that match (she hugged Kimiko and even looked happy for her) made me wonder if maybe Sabatini was maybe resigned to losing. It's a shame because she was so talented.
Sabatini endured a string of narrow losses against Steffi, Monica, Arantxa, and Mary Jo, and that combined with her lack of motivation forced Sabatini into early retirement.Just think of all the big matches where Sabatini was winning but she choked away? 1991 Wimbledon vs Steffi, 1992 French Open against Monica, '93 French Open vs Mary Joe, '95 Lipton against Kimiko. I mean, losing to Steffi at '91 Wimbledon hurt Sabatini's career to be sure, but her big-time choke against Mary Joe at '93 Paris did Sabatini in. Heading into that match, I remember how well Sabatini was playing, and felt she had an excellent chance of winning the whole thing, but Sabatini just became unglued and blew her 6-1. 5-1 lead. Of course, Mary Joe started playing better, but Sabatini let her back in the match. And how about the 1995 French Open, Steffi blew Sabatini away in their quarterfinal, I think Sabatini won just a single game? Sabatini was a fine, talented player to be sure, but she never seemed to jell, at least that's my take on her somewhat disappointing career.
@@gk891 1991 Wimbledon definitely stopped Gabi's momentum, but it was still a step up for her. She'd never reached a Wimbledon final before, so she could still take some pluses away. With the French Open 92, she'd been to the semis before and really needed a win to make that next step up. She lost and i think after that she really lost her motivation. She never entered another grand slam again (except possibly the 1995 Australian open) with anyone thinking she was one of the favourites to win.
@@zeddeka Even before Wimbledon in 1991, Sabatini played odd tennis at the French Open. She was the favourite to win having had the best clay court season out of all the players on the WTA tour. But she barely survived her QF match against Novotna. And in the semis against Seles, she was fine in the first set but once it got to 4-4, she basically stopped playing afterwards. Very strange.
T H the match were Gaby lost all confidence imo was the 1993 quarter finals of the French open. Having 5 match point after being 6-1 5-1 against Mary Joe lost all her confidence. She had not won a tournament at that stage but I remember she lost 3 clay court tournament finals that year at Hilton head to and Italian open to Conchita Martinez and lost 7-5 in the 3rd In Berlin to steffi. Coming into the French she was seeded 4th but has I’m great form in the 1st week. If she had defeated Mary Joe Fernandez who in the semis defeated No.2 seed Sanchez Vicario I’m straight sets would of been very close to def steffi. Anyway her form fell away pretty quickly and i remember in 1994 she lost 1st round of the French and fell out the top 10 for the first time in 8 years was ranked 11 in the world coming into Wimbledon. Gaby climeed back into the top 10 after the us open after reaching the semis and won basically the 5th grand slam as the end of year season championships at Madison square garden. After wining the first tournament in Sydney I’m 1995 she came into the Australian open ranked 6 in the world and with the absence of steffi and Monica Gaby was actually the 2nd favourite behind Sanchez but Gaby lost first round with a back injury to werdel who ended up making the semis but lost to SANchez. Anyway no one would of defeated Mary Pierce at the aus open that year including steffi or Monica as Mary was on fire that tournament
TO: Pert Snergleman: Any chance you could gain access to the full match Seles-Sabatini in Nov.1990 in Manhattan? Do you know if that video tape exists, even if you can't get to it? What about WTA, would they have the full video in their archives? Is there any legal way to induce them to get it posted on RUclips? Can you please give us, your faithful subscribers, an answer, if you know it?

Late? He's still alive as far as I know.
