- The Waffentrager in War Thunder is a really weird German Tank Destroyer that probably really didn't exist! Did it?
The Waffentrager houses the PaK version of the infamous King Tiger cannon. The Tiger II reputation for firepower is well known but what happens when you throw it on a flat panzer chassis, give it no armour or roof... and just enough engine power to get moving!
Well... you get the Waffle Tractor! :)
The 88mm cannon can punch through 240mm of steel at point blank and is good at taking out Sherman's WELL over 2000m away. It's just unfortunate most of your enemies on War Thunders maps will be basically barrel stuffing distance!
Despite me really disliking the play style of this type of tank, it looks really cool and I had a lot of fun! :)

Nashorn = Rhino
I love that gun on the waffle... Its too slow for big battle fields & sucks to get taken out by planes. But being able to 1 shot anything you face is awesome
Nashorn means rhino
please play the t28e and t80 in 2.3 br ussr, they are great fun and you have no video on both tanks (41st try)
Can you do a video on the German starter pack tank. I don’t know what ammo to use on it for tanks
I feel like Waffentrager is a TD for a very specific playstyle that just isn't all that common. I personally find myself doing pretty well with it consistently and having fun, but it does really play so differently from pretty much anything else in the german lineup.
With a long 88 i find sitting way back and long range killing with it
@@backyarddeathtraps5831 Not to mention the 8x zoom scope n that thing
I find myself in a similar position to you, I think it has alot to do with the tiny profile of the tank. It's like the slower, harder hitting german cousin of the asu-57, can just get into so many weird spots that people don't expect!
@Lewis Me when I played the Chinese PT-76, was expecting to die a lot only to somehow carried the whole damn team in multiple matches
I love the WT and it's play style. And on the flip side, I absolutely suck with things like Russian heavies, or tiger angling. I tend to always over angle or under angle my tigers lol. Can never find that sweet spot.
The most fun thing about the waffletractor is aiming straight up to look hilarious.
It only has a 45° elevation though
100% agree this is why I use this.
I once got stuck as this TD and actually shot to get myself unstuck. The gun has that much recoil.
Oh yes, the fire in the correct direction to rock yourself free is a valid maneuver. Especially if you are firing HE to get a little extra push from the blast when the shell detonates.
That has gotten me unstuck from rocks several times, in various vehicles,...nit just the waffentreager.
Odd still manages to get side flanks in tanks slower than a week in prison.
5:55 Most german tanks were named after some kind of an animal, I believe Nashorn is a Rhinoceros, i think the literal translation is Nas (nose) horn. I am no German expert tho, but in Serbian the word is very similar (Nosorog) to german Nashorn and has a literal translation to nose horn lol.
You are correct. Lots of languages call them nose horns haha
Yes, you are right Nashorn in german means Rhinoceros
Correct!
Löwe- lion
Tiger-tiger
Leopard-leopard
Nashorn- rhino
Gepard-cheetah
Elefant- elephant
Wiesel-weasel
Ozelot-ocelot
Panther -(panther ,essentially a leopard covered almost completely with spots)
Maus-mouse
Jagdtiger(hunter-tiger)
Puma IFV- puma

I recently got this vehicle and I think it's main downside is it's speed. You cannot really get into good positions early before your team took all the kills. Playing Germany around 5.0 - 6.0 is usually either a steamroll of the enemy or your team getting picked off first by high pen tds like the hellcat early game and then the cas that spawns from them. If it is a steamroll you cannot keep up to get kills, if it is the other outcome you get outmanouvered and or mgd to death by a fast td or strafed by an aircraft. You don't have an mg so fighting back is almost impossible if you get caught in a bad position. The only scenario this tank does good in is repelling heavy and medium tank counterattacks. It feels great to be able to pen heavy tanks from the front but sadly it is a rare occasion. I don't know how many tries it took to Odd to get decent footage but I applaude him anyways.
When I first went through the German tree and saw the waffle wagon I figured it was just a worse nashorn. Then I learned to just brawl with it and take big risks. Somehow this thing can shoot and scoot corners really well if you just stick out the back corner with the turret already turned.
And also backwards over hills. Keeps most of you vehicle hidden and the enemy can basically only shoot the turret. Unless he has a HE round your good
This is an excellent tank destroyer but for such a light tank the engine is underpowered, it definitely deserves a mobility buff for sure, I believe that the main reason people tend to avoid it is because it's painfully slow.
-8 gun elevation and slow turret traverse also are bad, but can be worked around. Other German TD have better stats though, more like an overload of them, to be truthful.
How does it 'deserve' a mobility buff? It's excellent at the tier it's at; incredibly good gun, full rotation turret with a great rotation speed, flat as hell. It's a near perfect TD already, giving it additional speed is nothing but catering to Wehraboos who demand that German tanks reflect their dream version of the vehicle.
@@darwinism8181 lol cope bozo
@@cheemsburmgerm7631 I'm sorry you got triggered by being outed as a Wehraboo, do you need a safe space to talk
Now that the Jadgpanther is 6.0 (LMAO) there's even less reasons to play this thing though the 360 degrees turret is very nice
The reason I don't play this tank is: planes. It's a shame cause I really love it and if we had a tank only mode I would play it a lot more, but in ground rb where planes don't even need to use bombs to kill you, it's not really fun to use this tank
agree with the ground battle only mode.. alot of sore players would revenge kill u on a plane.. I like the nashorn, it's a bit more sturdier(somewhat) and I use it as a first spawn so there are not much planes yet..
I don't mind planes being there, what I do mind is how easy they are to obtain, and that there should really be a seperate BR for ground and air battles for planes.
DO-335 is a bullshit ground pounder. But it can't fight other planes in air RB very well, so it's undertiered as hell.
Same story for the AR-234. It's super powerful in ground but useless in air.
And of course, planes like the P-47 that has a ton of things to ground pound, but gets whacked in the air so it's only 5.0 or something when it could quite comfortably sit at 5.3 or 5.7 if not for air RB. But also a lot of fighters that could be lower BR's due to their lack of ground pounding capability, but are amazing at killing other planes. A good example being the MK24 spitfire which has no ground pounding capability, but can clear the skies for you.
But on top of that, it's too cheap to spawn in a plane. Especially one with bombs, right now in the current state of the game all I need to spawn in for example a P-47 with 2 1000 pound bombs and 1 500 pound bomb, is capturing 1 point. And maybe scout a target, doesn't even need to be hit by anyone. In all honesty the cheapest ground belts/bomb load plane spawn should require 3 kills or more. Overall I do think fighters without cannons running air belts or universal belts are mostly good in their spawnpoint cost, since it should be possible to just get a plane out to whack some dudes trying to groundpound you
Its good on maps with woods you can hide from planes with.
@@Gary_The_Metro airstrike modification should be removed
At this br most players on the American and lots on the British and Russian trees play ground rb to fly planes. Most high levels I see who just want to have fun have 2 or sometimes more aircraft in their lineup it's gross.
This thing does not need to be a lower BR than 5.7, yeah it's slow but it's also got a cannon that can literally lolpen everything in it's BR and almost everything in a full uptier. Yeah it's got no armour but if you sit at a distance and snipe like what it's made to do, you will annihilate people. But of course, german players being what they are.. try to brawl with it.
You must be a usa main
@Hyperborean Feelz M36 is okay at 5.3 but could be just as fine at 5,7, idk why they moved it down from 5.7 What I have a bigger problem with is Japan and Italy having an m36 variant with 90mm HEATFS at 5.7
@@blackwidowrsa I'm a everything but russia, china and israel main. don't find their tanks very interesting.
@Hyperborean Feelz How come the Nashorn is 5.3? How come the Sturer Emil is 4.3? M36 has 175mm of pen. Less pen than already mentioned TDs and less pen than the Panther D which is guess what? 5.3.
@@Haaton-of-the-Basement fr its only got a slightly higher pen than the tigers - even then, its got shittier armour and more or less the same speed
I find that in urban maps it's surprisingly good if you get a sneaky spot beside or in between buildings, especially if you show your enemie's the rear of the tank, that way you have slightly better survival chances
This isn't really to do with the Waffentrager itself, but at 15:57 you mention about the tank going slower on a paved road than offroad Odd - I actually think something is completely wrong with that area of the map on Breslau, as I was playing the Concept 3 just the other day (which is not a very fast armoured car at the best of times) and it was actually capping out at 4-5mph and struggling to even shift up to 2nd gear in that same area. I think the properties of the road surface in that part of the map are either completely missing, or for some reason the same as deep mud and boggy ground. It's very silly to say the least.
it happens on the "dirty" cobblestones on a lot of maps,
I still remember they changed the traction thing, and it became horrible, weirdly for me, everyone seemed ok with it
in alot of maps too for some reason the curbsides on roads are set as mud. So if you are a wide tank, or arent specifically in the CENTER of the road, say hello to 7mph top speed in wheeled vehicles. It doesnt matter anyway because speeds like that irl i would think would keep a vehicle from ever entering service. Im sorry but 5-7mph top speed in snow or not even deep mud in something like a Stryker is bullshit and it would never have been deployed if its performance was that bad. I could maybe understand those speeds in shallow water on Vietnam or something since thats probably more like deep mud but not just wet dirt on the side of a road or on non swampy maps.
Waffenträger is very good , if no plane see's you . Most player's don't see you , cause they expect this huge tanks like Tiger's and Panther's . The Waffle is very small or flat for a German tank , perfect for a TD . Only downside is it's slow as hell .
Last time I was this early to an Oddbawz video, the R3 T20 was at 3.3! Joking aside, I also am not terribly fond of the Waffletractor... However it is the scariest thing at that BR if I am playing against it. It's a super capable vehicle if you take the time to learn it, but I prefer to use the Tiger if I am using an 88.
I guess the problem with speed, gun depression, traverse etc is true for most of the self propelled artillery that's used in the game as TD's.
Artillery just doesn't need good armour, mobility or much negative gun elevation, traverse speed etc. They're not needed for it's designed purpose. Just enough engine to get you into position, just enough armour to protect crew from shrapnel and maybe small arms fire, positive elevation to get the distance to target, give it a bit extra and you might even be of use as anti aircraft.
Once the vehicle is positioned traverse is there for adjustment only, and that's incremental at artillery firing distances, not like tracking moving targets that are relatively close.
But in the game, there is no 'meta' for self propelled artillery , so pseudo TD it is. The 'meme' artillery guns with massive HE get away with it due to the over pressure mechanic, the long 88, not so much.
this is not artillery though, this is a self-propelled anti-tank gun.
@@matthiuskoenig3378 with no “BOOM” :/
@@matthiuskoenig3378 SPG, ain’t that artillery?
I've been playing this tank for so long, like 3 years straight already, because I don't like playing higher BR; it's no fun, and it's my favorite tank on BR 5.7. I know the planes are annoying, but with the right position on the map, this tank is a beast!
The fire and smoke are strongly blow north but the rain just falls straight down. I guess Gaijin forgot to enable wind effects for the rain.
premium eyeball upgrade lmao. first time i actually laughed out loud in a long time
It also survives a lot of hits it probably shouldn't. It's a seal clubber only if the seal doesn't see you. And way too slow to reposition before the inevitable revenge kill by literally any plane in the game. But that gun...so awesome.
@16:35 "It's an IS-2. Now it's an IS-0."
That moment when you turn an IS-2 into an IS-N'T
This thing Yeets everything at every range. I love that Sniper Cannon Boy
Omg, i loved this thing when grinding, total deleter when in a good position
"Girth" Not sure why but I have been giggling like a 8 year old for about 5 min now.

You're awesome, Bawz..... Nashorn, is German for "Rhino" :)
Literally Nose Horn
Please make a video of the t-44-122 in war thunder :)
@@Catwiththemoney premium T-44 with is2 gun and slightly less russian bias on the UFP
Loved the mood on this misty Finland map.
15:56 I noticed my lower tier wheeled vehicles were just craaawwwling on Breslau. I mentioned it in chat and someone said Gaijin literally modelled the cobblestone streets as mud.
Fun fact: in true German fashion, Waffen, meaning weapon, and träger, meaning carrier, means they literally named this vehicle Weapon Carrier or Gun Carrier. A+ for creative effort Germany.
its not much different to panzerkampfwagen.
its full name is infact: Krupp-Steyr leichte Waffensträger für 8,8 cm L71
(and in some sources the Krupp-Steyr Leichter Einheitswaffenträger für 8,8 cm L71)
Still better than Gun Motor Carriage imo
I'm not good at this game, but here's why I like the Waffleburger (what my son calls it): German tanks have flat armor problems anyway (all pen/no bounce), so if I'm going to have to be behind a rock, hill or building anyway then heck yeah give me the biggest gun I can get!. Yes, it's sloooooow. Also, if you hear an airplane,- yes, it's coming for you. But you definitely don't need to stay as far back as most people do. There's enough cover on most maps to give the other side trouble. I'm bad, and I regularly go 3-5 kills with no losses.
Well this is one REAL WUNDERBAR!!!
Sturer Emil: forgot abt me boeh??
If I'm not mistaken the turret for the waffentrager was meant to be able to me removed and placed in a stationary mount. I don't know if the model of the tank in war thunder was able to do that irl but that was one of the requirements for the waffentrager program
I was hoping to see a vid on the waffle tractor! Thanks for delivering!
I’d much rather see you play a tank you enjoy - I passed this thing right by with zero regret and after watching this painful video I’m glad I did
15:55 i knowticed that to yesterday, for somereason some roads on breslau work like undeepmud, the footpaths are sometimes even worse xD
The supposed 'advantage' of the waffle is the idea that you can bring a very powerful gun at a relatively low SP cost. The problem comes in with its ability to bring that gun to bear in engagements. The turret is nice, but the low HP-to-ton ratio hurts it the most. I'd like to see this drop to at maximum 5.3, maybe 5.0. The problem is you start to get into areas where the gun will literally lolpen anything, ever.
Which might not actually be a problem. 😎
Don't you start getting into the same problem as the Sturer then? Your gun lolpens, but it's so overkill for lower BRs and the reload is so long that it just performs worse and worse the lower you put it.
Marder III H has the same supposed issue, but it balances out. The thing skull fucks everything at, or around it's BR, but your gun crew can be killed by .50's through the shield.
Why do I see so many people saying this? It’s a very good vehicle and easy to do well in if you play it right. It’s perfectly fine at 5.7
And Nashorn is Rhino in German for anyone wondering. (Nose is german is nase, so its just ‘nose-horn’)
Pretty sure this thing used to get scouting. Which would make 5.7 a reasonable BR. Unless im on the funny stuff.
It did exist, i remember a picture of it. It's so much fun, being the Devil's shopping cart.
The Waffentrager isn't a tank, tank destroyer, or self-propelled gun. Tractor isn't far off from what "trager" means, waffentrager translates to gun carrier, I believe. That's also not the name of a specific vehicle, but the class of vehicle in general, so Gaijin goofed on that count. The idea behind the program was to carry cannons to whichever battlefield needed them, then unload the turret in a fixed location or on another tank chassis, but it was intended to be capable of fighting as a tank would in a pinch. This was later in the war, when the Allies were bombing the crap out of German train lines, so it would have been safer to transport equipment overland like this instead of by rail where bombers were a constant threat. Spookston can tell you more about it, he has at least one video about the Waffentrager program and its experimental vehicles.
Got one of these with the b-m8-24 nearly 1 km away. The barrage of a lifetime lmao
Waffentrager is like a IS2 and JUMBO killer xD im very injoy plat this weird tonk.
5:55 Nashorn is literally “nose horn”, which is a somewhat literal translation to “rhinoceros”.
This is the second best vehicle in that tree:
1) You do not have to see the face of certain vehicles by going 6.3 in m41 or tiger 2.
2) It is the lowest profile German td you can get that has a better gun than any other.
3) Goes well with other panthers in terms of br. Just get in this and switch your mind for a change.
Ive just got back into Warthunder and im loving the tanks, but jesus man, the amount of kills you get is insane!! im happy with 1 during a whole battle lol, just cant figure it out
About the deal about going slower on Breslau i'm really not sure what it is but last time i was on Breslau i found myself actively staying off of roads despite being in a wheeled vehicle just to keep some speed.
In Poland lots of paved roads from that time didn't use neat bricks or cut stones, but just round-ish boulders/rocks you get from plowing fields, often at only roughly similar diameters. We still have some of them left, for "historical importance". Just the rough shapes and size differences mean even modern suspensions get a beating, but those roads also often settle unevenly, so on top of being rattled to death you also feel like you are on pretty upset sea lol. Perhaps gaijin in their infinite wisdom tried to account for that. I know I wouldn't want to be in a tank going over it on 1940s suspension lol. Or it's just another stupid bug
I like watching youtubers doing lower teirs as sometimes i see my squad mates in videos getting murdered by them haha
I hate playing his thing but it's just so successful for me. I have never had a bad game with it. The fully traversable turret, the low silhouette, the amazing gun at this BR - it's just really good, despite being slow and weird.
Very satisfying to smoke a jumbo through the UFP at like 800m with one of these
Interesting to hear you say "play it passively."
I would describe it as playing it in the manner for which it was designed: lay in wait, ambush, deny access to an area. In other words be smart and engage from a distant and concealed location. Don't rush about like an idiot or try to slug it out up close & personal.
The best part of the waffle maker is its small. Plus it's turret. Yes it's slow yes its got no armor. But it's small and got a good gun. It's so much better than the Nash imo
I usually get to where I’m going and then drive it in reverse, its fun in the right maps…until the planes come ofc
5:56 Nashoorn = rhino.
(Neushoorn in Dutch)
And waffenträger means weapon carrier.
(Wapendragen in Dutch)
kinda sad that you lose when teammates die. would be nice if the ticket would go down to 1 so the game would keep going and killed allies wouldn't make you lose, but no more could spawn. that way you could have a miracle comeback
The one who killed you at 07:47 was a revenge kill, you killed him at 05:38 ("skg malaka") ;) The good ol' revenge busters!
I got 11 kills without even getting shot back at or getting CAS’d with that lil thing. I can usually get one or two kills on average before getting smacked by a P-47
That's just a normal game against freeaboos
@@blackwidowrsa normal game against anyone; as if Germany and USSR dont spam cancer as well. It would help against revenge bombing if the killcam didnt show you exactly where the person who killed you is.
U can’t say this is the weirdest tank in the game when there is a tank that looks like a table with a turret lol
Proof Odd is adored: posted 3 minutes ago and already 75 likes and rising
Doubt you will see this: I've been really sick (threw up 20 times last night) but it is so nice to lay in bed eating chicken noodle soup and hearing your laugh. Thank you
It is not so slow, if u consider that it is a SPG, and it's faster then Dicker Max or Sturer Emil, and only little bit slower then Nashorn.
12:58 that guy didn't survive cuz he didn't angle that day XD
Gaijin should give this thing +200HP, a bit more armor to withstand .50cals and make it Premium. Then, it would be a perfect "Pay to Win" 👍
Everytime i hear Waffletractor i get hungry thinking of waffles...
This tank is my go to for matches in a full up tier with that long 88 with not having the VFW
VFW is also slow AND massive, with even less crew protection
Nashorn is Rhinoceros. The horn part can help remember :)
This tank did better for me on urban maps than sniping maps. It's super weird but it works great.
YEE HAAW! My favorite maker of dead enemies! (Also my favorite AAA weapon //6.7K ground targets, 1K air targets :) ) He's even got my default camo! w00t!
Quick waffletractor tip: you get much better gun depression over the back of the hull, which works quite well for getting a shot off then disappearing down into a depression with your quicker forward gear.
Also, that gun elevation allowed me to shoot down a spitfire that refused to stop strafing me.
Good times...
Aldo, weirdly survivable.
In world of tanks this tank is a beast because of its camo rating.
Germany isn’t sure if they like cats or if they’re hungry. They have the Bagel Panzer, the Waffle Tractor…

I dont think the gun could fire while the "turret" was on the vehicle. Some of the waffentraggers ahd cranes on the hull to lift the "turret" and place it on the ground. At least that is what i read a few weeks ago.
what are you smoking the gun depression is GREAT on this thing

He played the truck version of it a month ago, and to me the diffrence is pretty small.
I love this thing, but then again I'm a sucker for weird ones.
The waffletractor looks very wide while its actually not wider its just not as tall as the other german vehicles so it looks very wierd
You wondered what Nashorn means, it's Rhino, although the extremely litteral translation for both is nose-horn. Pretty sure some variation of nose-horn is the name for rhinos in most Germanic languages. Like noshörning in Swedish. So basically antything that sounds like a combination of nose and horn is probably rhino in most of those languages.
