Basically, you are being taught how to answer TOEIC, IELTS or OET exam questions instead of mastering the language.
From my experience with East Asians regarding English. Koreans, Japanese and Chinese students tend to be good at writing or reading but are not necessarily great at speaking. If you want to point out important words, they know it but struggle to hold a conversation fluently without being shy or embarrassed unless they were the top students.
I absolutely agree with Dion. As we age we learn that failure is just as valuable, perhaps even more so than success. Everything in my life I deem worth doing took effort. The easy things are mundane and unimportant by comparison.

I really enjoyed your conversation about using AAVE vs “Standard” American English. I found that once I started teaching my students grammar through the lens of code switching rather than what is “correct” English, we were much more successful because it took the judgment out of the lessons and required more critical thinking. Great video!
I know you're a great teacher just by sharing this. I was grateful to have teachers who acknowledged the difference instead of deeming those of us who use it as ignorant. I became a lover of words because of educators like you!
I think the reason that the boys struggled with the English test is because when we see our native language we don’t think about it that much, the most I consider the use of language in schools is in English right but other than that native speakers tend to ignore certain language cues. The Korean students have been learning a specific method to answer these specific types of questions for years, that being said, it doesn’t necessarily mean they have a great grasp or are comfortable with the English language (not necessarily saying these students cause they seem to be very advanced but just in general from what I’ve seen on this topic). Just like in American they study for test, not so much for learning. However, I definitely agree with the Head Master in his saying that Korea goes deeper into the education of foreign languages compared to in say England or America simply because 1. They study for a lot longer than we do, with crazy long school days (including Night School) 2. There is a lot of opportunities that come from speaking English making it desirable to learn.

The english test in south korea is a lot harder than American english test in america. I don't know why south korea does it like that. In america usually 2 answer will definitely not make sense and you got a 50/50 chance of the other two but in south korea they make all the answers seem to be the correct answer and there are more multiple choice then simply a.b.c.d. It can go up to a b c d e f g h as a multple choice. Speaking perfect english doesn't mean you will do well in an english test.
The way they structure and speak is different so some times that can make it difficult
