    No discussion of Revivify is complete without an honorable mention of Gentle Repose. Delivering Gentle Repose by way of familiar (if downded character is dead and out of reach by Revivify caster) can save dead low level party members until finding a source of Revivify. Practically infinitely if recast within 10 day intervals.

    • @theuncalledfor
      @theuncalledfor 2 года назад +11

      Gentle repose can also be used to avoid food waste. The spell only specifies "a corpse or other remains". Which means _it keeps meat fresh._
      You can kill a dragon and store tons of its meat in various Bags of Holding and keep Gentle Respose'ing the meat to keep it edible indefinitely. You can eat, or sell, this rare delicacy without wasting a single scrap! (Might count as an act of evil though since dragons are intelligent, but really, it's already dead and it's not like you killed it _just_ to get the meat, right? I mean, it's a dragon, it was probably a quest to kill the thing because it was terrorizing villagers or something.)

    • @lydiasteinebendiksen4269
      @lydiasteinebendiksen4269 2 года назад +4

      @@DrApylon I checked, and double checked, and then checked the warlock just to be sure and you are actually right. You can convert any slot, not just those gained from the sorcerer class, and warlock slots have no property that makes them not count as just "spell slots". This is bigger than goodberry though, you are describing a system that lets you convert remaining warlock slots into sorcery points every short rest, and the points lasts untill your next long rest, and while you can't have more sorcery points than your sorcerer level, you can have potentially infinite magical energy by making slots using the same feature. There is a large conversion cost, ao it won't be that groundbreaking, but honestly this is really cool, I'm making a sorcelock right away!

    • @DrApylon
      @DrApylon 2 года назад +5

      @@lydiasteinebendiksen4269 coffeelock basics are you never take long rests (reborn/warforged are easiest since they don’t need sleep, though elves can work too, but exhaustion might still get you) you get lvl 2 warlock to get the generation slots (2 lvl 2 slots is 4 sorcery points per short rest essentially) you then use sorcerer to convert said sorcery points into any spell slots of 5th or lower, those slot don’t go away until you take a long rest. So as long as you only take short rests, you can continue to build more and more spell slots of 5th level or lower. Enjoy phenomenal cosmic power

    • @lydiasteinebendiksen4269
      @lydiasteinebendiksen4269 2 года назад

      @@DrApylon Yeah I just disspaired and did the work myself. First I want to point out that the only rules for exhaustion are in xanathars and why the rule talks about rests, it also specifiea that it's there to deal with sleep deprevision, aomethin an elf would be able to ignore if they get thwir 4hrs. Ideally you get tome at 5th and go aspect of the moon though, to have all 8 hours free while the party rests
      The cool upahot is that if your tomelock 3 sorc 2 character spends 7 of those hours short resting converting each slot to points then 1st level slots, you can get 14 1st level slota that stay untill you finnish a long rest, but you will never finnish a long rest, just get cure wounds to make up for the hitpoint defecit and you can have ynlimited spell slots. I half-did the math, and this 5th level build can have way over 100 1st level slots with a week of downtime. At 7war/7sorc you can make a 5th level slot per short rest, or 4 1st level slots, as well as options in-between, Letting you have the most broken build concevable.
      Now the 3rd level phb only verion with an elf only guarantees 3 slots per long rest, and a gaining rat of 1 slot per hour of waking dt, but there still isn't a limit, so give it a week and you have dozens of spell slots. Nevermind goodberry, you can hand out cure wounds castings like they were goodberry, and never even have to tap into your "real" spell slots.
      The 5th level version (tomelock3/sorc2), if you pick the celestial patron for healing spells, also leaves you at 12 cantrips, of which 3 can be from any class, and this build hardly needs cantrips as it can use 1st level spells as if they were free.

    • @DrApylon
      @DrApylon 2 года назад +1

      @@lydiasteinebendiksen4269 generally the build really comes online with a race that naturally doesnt suffer exhaustion from a lack of sleep so you can spam chained short rests during long rests. Otherwise you need Greater Restoration, prior to this its still very good as you can use excess warlock slots as sorcery point regen during short rests and just utilize more metamagic. But you dont want to invest too much into warlock as warlock spell progression doesnt continue to improve your spell slots, it also prevents you from getting access to more spells/feats/ASIs. Generally Warlock multiclassing works best when splashing either warlock or other classes.

    Surprised you didn’t mention aura of vitality. Now that clerics have it.
    You can concentrate on having at will healing word and it heals for the same average total as heal, a spell twice it’s level
    If someone goes unconscious in one round in a deadly encounter, where healing word is only likely to buy them a turn, you might spend 4 or 5 castings of healing word, maybe all your first, maybe running out of first and casting at second for no significant benefit. And for the entire fight your only action, is either cantrips help or dodge.
    Or, you can cast aura of vitality. Spend 1 third level slot and your concentration to save a lot of spells, and not limit you from casting leveled spells on later turns, and when your four rounds of combat are over, you have 6 more rounds after combat, or great out of combat healing, to get that man to an amount of health that isn’t such a dire need of a rest.
    Similarly if you're even in a "we have less than an hour" time crunch and can't short rest, spare a minute for aura of vitality. At level 5 it's as good as a short rest

    • @snakept69
      @snakept69 3 года назад

      In my experience Healing Word is good, but can also be a trap. Sure it heals as a bonus action but what do clerics have to do with the leftover action? Their attacks aren't good and their cantrips are average.
      My problem with healing word is that any DM worth his salt will ignore downed players just like the PCs ignore downed enemies. But bring one back with a single healing and that changes if the enemy is smart. Those goblins won't ignore downed foes now, they will knock your friend down with 1 attack, preferably before he even gets up, and the rest will bonus action disengage and stab him to death.
      That's where Aura of Vitality comes in. Start healing before your fiends go down does the same as bringing them back up when they do without the risks. Sure you may waste some healing but you much better guard life. Barbarians constantly healed by Aura of Vitality are near immortal. I did prefer the spell when it was paladin exclusive though, little too good on life clerics as it heals 2d6+5 HP per BA.

    I believe the stomach ache side effect ruling of Goodberry comes from each berry giving you "enough nourishment for one full day". If you read this as "each berry supplies enough energy to substitute for a 2000 calorie daily intake", that means eating 10 goodberries would be like eating 20,000 calories all at once. At point, if you started with an Intelligence of 16 and used both ASI to increase this score, your Mass Healing Word restores 1d4+15 to 6 creatures. About Disciple of Life + Goodberry:
    Since Goodberry technically doesn't heal, it just creates items that can heal someone, it can be interpreted to not work together with Disciple of Life. If you somehow created a Healing Potion using a spell, Disciple of Life wouldn't work, why should it work with Goodberry? I understand that it can also be interpreted the other way around and work, but don't just assume it will work as you intend. 40HP for a 1st level spell is extremely strong!

    About the nurishment thing, a berry provides enough nurishment to sustain A creature for a day, not THE creature. This means if you eat two goodberries, you should gain exactly twice the nurishment. The spell doesn't claim you get stomach issues though, and hwre is why:
    Now in a way the description is stupid bc a whale needs more food than a mice, and some beings eat rocks, so unless the berry contains all the periodic elements in high enough quantities to feed whatever needs most of each element per day (which would kill anyone, and be radioactive, explosive, etc.) some trickery ia going on.
    Now since the text sais you gain nurishment (as opposed to not needing nurishment) specifies A creature, and so on, one can only presume it doesn't give you any chemical mixture, but rather the effect of nurishment, meaning it magically runs your metabolism for the insuin 24 hrs, which means if you eat 2, the second just resetts the timer, as magical effects don't stack in 5e.
    Is this absurdly complex and probably not how it was intended? Sure, but I said RAW, and WotC claims the writing is intentional so I'm running with it.

    Personally I would rule gb like this: you may only have a number of berries equal to a maximum og 10 x the level of the last spell slot you used to create goodberries, capping it at 10 times your highest slot, and making it so can't refill as easily. This is to make it not completely overshadow other healing, while still allowing the concept bc lets be honest, it's a tactic that rewards planning ahead without impacting combat beyond starting conditions, as a DM this is exiting to me.
    To give an illustration of the optimal way of casting each night with this rule: If you have 4th level slots, you cast goodberry using a 1st level slot, then a 2nd level, then a 3rd level, and finally the 4th level slot if available. This would keep goodberries at a low enough quantity that they might still run out even if you have two casters with the spell using the tactic, while making it still useful at all levels, though slightly less impactful as time goes on since there are better ways to use high level slots, something I think is reasonable.

  • @8shanrahan1

    Something else to consider, at 4th level, if you're DM allows you to pick your summons, summoning a 2 dryads is great. they can each cast goodberry 3x/day, can cast entangle 3x/day each, and pass without trace 1/day. In terms of versatility and healing, it's incredible.

    Disciple of life does not work with Goodberry by RAW, here is why:
    The feature sais "Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points" Goodberry does not restore hitpoints, it creates berries, and then the berries restore hitpoints if eaten within the next 24hrs. If the spell lasted 24hrs and could be dispelled I might be inclined to think disciple of life should work with it because the berries properties were an active spell effect, but goodberry is instantanious, meaning once the berries are created they are no longer affected by a spell, and they are not themselves spell effects.
    Think about it like this: if you use wish to create a healing potion, and you have disciple of life, that healing potion still follows the rules for a healing potion, because it's a potion and not a spell.

    • @Cloud_Seeker
      @Cloud_Seeker 2 года назад

      The Sage Advice say it does so the designers say it does. Which means by RAW it does.
      Goodberry 100% restore Hit Points. It is right there. It restore 1 HP every time one berry is eaten. The problem with this reasoning is that casting Cure Wounds does not heal someone by itself. The Cure Wounds spell creates a magical force that heal someone. The difference between Cure Wounds and Goodberry is that the effect of the spell is not instant and instead linger for a while. Another difference between Cure Wounds and Goodberry is that Goodberry can be dispelled, while Cure Wounds do not. Walking into a anti-magic field will make all Goodberries go away, while the healing for Cure Wounds will not go away. A single dispel magic will automatically remove ALL berries since it can not be upcast.
      "but goodberry is instantanious, meaning once the berries are created they are no longer affected by a spell"
      - Nonsense. If they were not they should not lose their potency after 24 hours. The berries are still magical for up to 24 hours, which means they are still under the effect of the spell.

      @@Cloud_Seeker I generally don't mind being wrong, but I don't think I can accept your argument on this. It's obviously up to the DM anyways, RAW is no more valid so I would have the rule work the way that made the most sense too me anyways, but I frankly can't see how your argument changes anything.
      The description sais that when you use a spell to restore hitpoints to a creature, that creature regains extra hp. So if I cast goodberry and someone kills me, steals them, and eats them, is it still "when I use a spell to heal a creature" Because I'm pretty sure you can't use a spell when you are dead, meaning it can't trigger because it triggers when you use a spell.
      This is interessting, bc by this logic, goodberries can be used to determine if someone on the other side of the multiverese is dead for 24 hours. And what if they get ressurected? Do the goodberries work again? The language is pretty clear, Rules As Written, means as written, not as intended, no matter what anyone says. I don't mean to be anal about the neuances of a spell interacting with a class ability in a game that expicitly tells you to make everything up, I'm just stating what seams invontriversible and clear to me.

      @@lydiasteinebendiksen4269 Well there is a lot of things in 5e that doesn't really work with RAW and RAI. For example.
      Revivify:
      In revivify you need to target a creature that has died. The problem is that RAI say that a creature is not dead. A corpse is dead and is an object, a creature is alive and is not an object. The wording on spells are deliberate. You can not cast spells on objects if they target creatures, and you can not cast spells on creature if they target objects.
      So by RAW, revivify doesn't work since there are no dead creatures. There are dead corpses. So by RAW you can not cast Revivify.
      Hand Crossbow:
      The Hand Crossbow has the light property. The light property exist so you can dual wield weapons. The problem is that the RAW say that you can only make dual wielding attacks with light MEELE weapons and not ranged weapons.
      Ofc Crossbow Expert overwrite this, but it does so by making the light feature and dual-wielding rules irrelevant.
      So by how the light property is writen. You should be able to dual-wield Hand Crossbows RAW. Note that loading doesn't require you to have a free hand to reload.
      But by how the dual-wield rules are written RAW, you can not dual-wield any ranged weapon no matter what the property say.
      This mean there is absolutely no reason why the Hand Crossbow should even have the Light property since it is worthless for it.

    What about Prayer of Healing?
    Isn't that one pretty much the most effective per-slot-level healing in the game? It basically heals the same amount as a casting of Goodberry, except on the whole party. Its long casting time is easily made up for by having Healing Word for emergencies. It's the only spell that can out-heal damage & damage negation. There is some redundancy with hit-dice, but I've seen way too many clerics use other spells (worst of all: Cure Wounds) to top up a party out of hit-dice.

      If you have a 6+ person party and all are down hp's then yes it is a great way to top up people during downtime since it has a 10 minute cast time. If you are in a 3 person party than the healing is only half as good. Eating berries can also be done faster than 10 minutes. Also goodberry never wastes heals by overhealing. If one member is down 2 and another is down 18 then one eats 2 and the other eats 18. Prayer would heal the 2 every time but the 18 might not heal all the way up ending in overhealing on the 2 being wasted. Good berry is also chain castable right before a long rest so you can just make oodles of them. If you had 8 total spells slots open before you rest you can make 80 berries for the next day. It is like precast healing for any non combat time. Though if you have a DM who does not allow the goodberry spam prayer of healing is your next go to for non combat healing.

      The only reason healing word is considered "broken" is because of DMs who don't want to be responsible for a PC death.
      At low levels healing word only brings back a few hp enough to endure one hit at most. This is fine for an emergency but try that with your main tank facing 2 or 3 opponents and you will have a lot of issues. 1st you are prone when you are downed which is just a bad position to be in. 2nd if the fighter keeps going down and coming up at some point the opponents should opt to coup de gras at least once. Finally using healing word soaks so many of your valuable spell slots in the early game it's pretty fair considering the clerics godlike spell list.
      The mid to late game is the above but now the monsters have multi attack. Knowing a poorly thought out healing word can instantly result in 2 failed death saves and a 50/50 coming up will teach them to rely on the bigger safer heals primarily.

    I know the popular opinion, and even the sage advice, say that disciple of life applies to goodberry, but I never did like this interpretation. Just to be clear though, I have not, and would not, rule against this interpretation, I just never liked it. To me, spells do exactly what they say. And goodberry says it creates the goodberries, not that it heals. The goodberries, a product of the spell though, do have an ability to restore hit points, and to me that's different, that's a function of the item (goodberry), not the spell (goodberry). Also, disciple of life says when you use a spell to restore hit points, which means when the spell causes the healing. But goodberry has a duration of instantaneous, which means the spell itself is not an ongoing effect. So, if the spell is not ongoing when the healing occurs, then to me the spell isn't what's restoring the hit points, as the spell is done and over with, and so disciple of life wouldn't apply.
    Again, I know my opinion is going to be unpopular, no need to tell me so. I just wanted to share my thoughts. And I feel like if they intended them to work together, which it definitely seems they did, then they should amend the text of either the spell or the feature. But additionally, goodberry is already super powerful and useful even without this insane 4x or more buff, so is there any point is needing it so buffed anyway? Can any other class feature quadruple the effects of a spell without any additional resource use? Do we really want to completely trivialize all other out of combat healing and negate entirely the need for resting due to damage? If so, then why even throw enemies at the party, get them to spend resources on other things like solving puzzles and exploration. Because with goodberry so buffed, unless you down a party member, the damage done was completely meaningless beyond that combat. I feel like it makes the game less fun because combat is less meaningful, and other party members who might contribute to recovery are completely outshined and made unnecessary in that regard.

    Also if you are gonna pull the "Rules as intended" for feeding goodberries to allies, rules as intended also means life domain benefit to healing only applies once per ally per spellcast. Life transference allows you to heal a target for 4d8*2 health while taking 4d8 damage. While taking damage is unpleasant, chances are you're a backliner who rarely gets hit. You can take the damage and heal it up later with Goodberry or whathaveyou. But the spell will bring a character from "almost dead" to fighting condition quicker than most other spells. Quick side note everyone! With Strixhaven you can take the Quandrix background and get access to 2 cleric cantrips AND a 1st level spell you CAN cast with non appropriate spell slots. It becomes a spell known I believe. So, a WIZARD can get access to 30 Goodberries A DAY at level 1.

    The reason I nerf goodberry is the reason zeebash does. It ruins an aspect of survival. I make it so the holly is consumed on use. This works as holly is moderately available for temperate climates where survival isnt a big part of the game play... But in the desert or arctic or island maybe not.

    Also you can extent the time that the berries last even futher if you take the second watch of a three watch system. Cast it at the end of your watch and you've skipped 2/3 of that 8 hours of watch time that would have been wasted if you had done it at the beginning

    Life transference is probably the best in combat healing spell for gaining more HP (not bringing back to stable like healing word) before L6 Heal. Nothing else can heal as much to someone with 1 action, things like Blessed Healer can help mitigate damage done to you.

    my gut feeling when you said dms rule that goodberry gives stomach problems is that maybe because it gives enough nourishment for one day? like its vaguely said but i could interpret that as its so filling that its all you'd need to eat for a day and therefore overeating them could make you feel ill. that or like eating way too many vitamin tablets and getting sick because you have way too much vitamin c. as a dm i don't think i have a problem with the spell but i think it may have been designed originally for feeding a large group of people like your party and mounts or helping civilians you encounter, as opposed to a lunchbox of senzu beans.

    • @PackTactics

      No where in the rules does it say over eating makes you feel ill in the first place. You have to find me that rule or else you made up the rules.

      The domain spells pay the Cleric tax™️, that being you don’t need to have a bunch of mandatory heal spells prepared. Thus you can run what you actually wana run from the cleric list without agonising when you forget to prep lesser restoration or revivify.
      The main spell the domain doesn’t give for free is healing word, but that’s only a single spell slot.

    Unpopular opinion- good berry the spell summons good berries. The good berry heals 1 hp when consumed. Thus the good berry spell doesn't heal it creates good berries. Meaning clerics can't affect it

    I have nerfed goodberry once. It was in Rime of the Frostmaiden, where a core conflict of the book, (the nomads in the frozen wastes being starving) was immediately solved by goodberry. Not by the players mind you, the ones who had access to goodberry were the starving nomads. Why would they be starving if they have a druid who can cast goodberry? Also just because something has healing properties doesn't mean eating large amounts of that thing is safe.

    • @PackTactics
      @PackTactics  2 года назад

      Point to me the rule where it says you get problems. How I read it is enough nourishment means you get enough. If you already have enough and you eat, you get none because you already have enough.

    • @lawaern3474
      @lawaern3474 2 года назад

      @@PackTactics I was merely refuting the idea that something with healing properties wouldn't be able to give you a stomach ache. It could. I'm not saying that goodberry definitely would. Just that it would be a fair assumption. Too much of a good thing can be bad.
      I should also say that the nerf I gave it had nothing to do with stomache aches. I made it a bit more expensive to cast. To explain why the starving npcs weren't using it to solve their food problems.

    • @PackTactics
      @PackTactics  2 года назад

      @@lawaern3474 So like, you only have a problem with the feeding thing so why not just... Remove that and say no nourishment what so ever and instead it just heals you. Saves you the trouble. Players are fine with that rather then unintentionally nerfing the best part of the spell.

      @@PackTactics A great idea in hindsight. But sadly that campaign fell apart. And my other games don't have the same problem with starving background characters. I'll use that next time if I run that campaign again though. Thanks.
