My Druid has a Staff of Healing, and it's genuinely been a combat-winning item. Our DM tends to roll a lot of crits on us, and having the Mass Cure Wounds on the whole party is really useful - especially because I'm playing a damage-focused, spellcaster Druid. Definitely recommend.

Thanks for doing this video! I typically play clerics and druids, so this guide was helpful for knowing what useful items are out there for my characters!
In a campaign where I play an Aaracokra druid, the Staff of the Woodlands helps me to sleep, turning into a tree where I can put my nest. Better than a bedroll.
For the druid, one could reskin Scale Mail armor as Crocodile Scale Armor, so that they could get that 14+ 2dex worth of AC. I mean, there's always stuffed crocodiles and other such creatures in a wizard's workshop - whose to say that a druid, who wanted some extra protection, wouldn't borrow the scales of a crocodile? Besides, giant crocodiles have an ac of 14, so it could work.
You can use counterspell on your own turn while casting a spell. It is even mentioned in the Sage Advice compendium, counterspelling on turn specifically
Is Dragon Scale Mail still made of metal, though? The description of scale mail says it is covered with overlapping pieces of metal, and the Dragon Scale Mail description also includes that line, as if it is saying that it consists of dragon scales/hide covered with overlapping pieces of metal. I don’t think my Druid would be allowed to wear that :( Which is a shame, because, as you said, the best armor you can wear otherwise is Hide.
My druid has two fabulous magic items, The Candle of Invocation, which allows him to cast first level spells like they are cantrips and not worry about spell slots. The Staff of Swarming Insects, which allows him to be in heavy obscurement, but be able to see OUT of that obscurement without any penalty. I love sitting in my cloud of bugs and fling ice knives out at advantage.
I just got the Staff of Frost for my Druid...of course we're in Rime of the Ice Maiden, so not sure how useful that's gonna be offensively, but defensively it DID give me Cold Resistance and Fog Cloud is a Boring Yet Practical option, given how useful it can be.
never seen a debate over Counterspell while casting another spell it only has somatic but I have seen people say that using a magic item has to be an action but I have also seen JC mention that it would be pointless for it to take an action to interact with a magic object if it is a scroll of counterspell. he implied that if a magic item used a spell it used the economy of the spell plus the Rod specifies reaction. it would kinda defeat the purpose of the item if you have to hold your action to wait for the unwanted spell to target you.
I personally like Staff of Healing over Necklace of Prayer beads for a few (minor) reasons. You're not guaranteed all spells in Necklace of Prayer Beads (depends on the rolls). Also, 1d4 + 2 could mean only 3 beads. And what if you got Branding Smite, and 2x Cure Wounds/Lesser Restoration as your 3 beads as an example. Now compare that with Staff of Healing, also Rare and Attuned with guaranteed 10 charges, you could cast Cure Wounds lvl 2 or Lesser Restoration 5x per day vs the beads 2x and one Branding Smite which I personally would never use. Yes you can use the beads as a bonus action, but spell rules still apply, so you can only cast a cantrip or make a melee attack for your Action anyways. In the other case, most Clerics have Spiritual Weapon up so if using an Action to use your Staff of Healing you still have a bonus action for your Spiritual Weapon attack so not a big difference typically. Just not a fan of the rolling magic items cause bad rolls could make it really underpowered (vice versa good roll could be great). Just my thoughts.
13:38 An important note about the conjure elemental spell: ,,If your concentration is broken, the elemental doesn’t disappear. Instead, you lose control of the elemental, it becomes hostile toward you and your companions, and it might attack." I don't know why they made this restriction but I wouldn't waste a 5th level spell slot for something this risky.
Thanks guys!!! Helpful stuff, twilight cleric w/ a 1 level dip in monk (and ooh she wishes was more of a monk) and dip into druid planned, fairy follower of Titania! Currently delving into the Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage. My mission - keep my nut bar party alive, so far - they are... so far...
We homebrewed that my Celestial Warlock could attune to the Staff of Healing since she was the party's healer, we just changed it so that it was a 'gift' from her patron... whom just so happens to be her mother.
After Tasha's, I think the Eldritch Claw tattoo (a more generic item than insignia of the claw which is faction specific) takes that uncommon slot for druids.
I'm using a candle of invocation on my order cleric in curse of strahd. My first turn is almost always light the candle as my action, then bonus action cast bless. So useful.
Twilight cleric/star druid is one of my all time favourite builds, and the only magic items I requested from my dm were purely flavour. Stuff like a telescope that ignore other light sources shit like that. Coz a star druid/twilight cleric is already the character
I introduced a homebrew variant for insignia of claws that gives additional special abilities when in the presence of a dragon. The wearer can see through the dragon's eyes and get a sense for its upcoming attacks, providing some defensive reaction capabilities. It might only come up once in the campaign, but could make for a fun moments.
Another potential cleric item that brings some of “Moses and the Seven Plagues” vibe, Staff of Swarming Insects. It has 10 charges to cast Giant Insect, Insect Cloud, and Insect Plague. My DM picked this out when I joined the group because by then, everyone had a magical item. I’ve gotten some really great use out of it, especially when I have the space to throw out Insect Plague and catch a lot of enemies in the space. I’ve even severely injured/killed two wyverns with it!
A really good and simple magic item for clerics and paladins alike that can be useful is an amulet that puts out a cone of "daylight" It affects vampires, gives light, and depending on the power of the item you can make the light cast banishment on evil outsiders as an action
As you said about a possible ring of heart, it would control the heart, so easy to add spells to it would be -Friends -Command -Calm Emotions -Charm person -Suggestion - POWER WORD KILL What, you thought I wasn't thinking of telling a heart I command to stop?
Candle of Invocation for VR is actually really powerful. Say you get a life cleric/druid who can cast goodberry; just using a minute of the candle can give you 10 rounds of casting goodberries. That's already 100 berries that can heal 4 hp each with a total of 400. Do this at the start of adventure and distribute goodies to your party. The item has 4 hours limit, but man, just a minute of this 4 hours (240 mins) is not a big deal. In a typical game, you can probably use 6 minutes of its 240 minute capacity. I usually have this habit: 1. Cast a minute of goodberry at the beginning of adventure (1min of candle) 2. Use a minute of candle when you need advantage of skills checks in non-combat ( 1 min used) 3. Lighten candle when you are facing combats to gain advantage on attack roles and saving throws (1 min used) 4. Used extensively when needed for #3 and #4 (another 2 to 3 mins used) Also have to include the Staff of Swarming Insects. The spells might be useful but the main star here is the insect cloud feature. It gives your character a 10 min heavily obscured shield for 30 radius. I say it's a shield for two reasons. First, enemies get disadvantage when they attack you and two, the obscured field makes you immune to counterspell and other single target spell (unless they have blindsight). Note that true sight doesn't work here and only blindsight can. Your party can use this as a cover too when they are attacked (but note they have to get out on their turn if they want to attack).
the Staff of healing is right out of Dragonlance i love it! I love awarding items like that and healing wands so that the "healer" is not having to use all of their resources to do cool stuff to just do something lame like heal the party.
The necklace of prayer beads is also very useful in diversifying the spell list and increasing the spell slots of the Paladin. Moreover, the fact that spells can be cast as a bonus action it can allow you to do other things with your action (like attack, cast cantrips, use channel divinity, etc). IMO it's one of the more powerful low level items especially if your GM gives you the max beads (6) and allows you to choose the beads. For balance though perhaps it should only have 4-5 slots at most and the player can choose only 1-2 beads while the GM rolls the others randomly.
I've never agreed with the druids aversion to metal. From a taoist philosophy, metal is considered an element in it's own right. For naturalists and common sense, I see metal as a natural and perfect union of earth and fire, and I've always allowed druids to use metal gear in my games
23:02 - to hear Monty chuckle at the mere thought of "a party that can last at least 5 days without losing a member"... oh, how reckless their players can be xD
Our party used the staff of the woodlands to awken a set of large vegetables we bought from a giant. We are now training theses awakened vegetables to be sidekicks using the tashas sidekick rules
Staff of the Woodland could be interresting for a Ranger ... or a Eldritchknight / bladelock. The prayerbeads can make a good growing magic item as you hunt/ create/quest for additional prayerbeads for your necklace. Adamantine armor would be good for the Cleric.
To my knowledge this is not a magic item that exists, but the only thing I've ever wanted for my cleric is something that increases my spiritual weapon's movement by 10ft so it matches my character's speed.
Funny enough, I have a druid, circle of the stars, who has max wisdom and the sentenal shield, and the feat observant. His passive perception is I believe 28 and the reason toe why it's funny, is simply due to the fact I wasted a better feat option or stat increase just to increase his passive perception since he needs that amazing perception to look at the stars all night
Gave our level 4 Druid the Staff of the Woodlands in our Waterdeep Dragon Heist game. Thought it would be fun... Then they Awakened a Gazer they had captured... And a Griffon they had "borrowed"... So it's been a lot of fun.
Hey Dudes, this was overall a cool video and I love your content, but there's something you might want to keep an eye out for. Taking inspiration from this video, I gave my Level l2 Druid a Staff of the Python. Only after giving it out did I realize that the Python also *regains all its hitpoints* when it becomes a staff again. So my Druid can use the Python to soak damage for the party and do quite a bit of damage itself, turn it back into a staff, and do it all over again, infinitely. This makes things way too easy at low levels; the Python is basically *inevitable* unless killed, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a setup that can achieve that, especially if you're a new DM. And it basically spells out "I am gunning to destroy your magic item" which is not fun for the player. My solution was to give the Python similar healing mechanics as the players. It has 8d12 hit dice (from its associated stat block), which it can spend on a short rest, or it can regain all its HP at dawn (long rest or not).

The best magic item in this whole video is that beautiful mustache, Kelly!!!
My druid has two fabulous magic items,
The Candle of Invocation, which allows him to cast first level spells like they are cantrips and not worry about spell slots.
Glad they mentioned Staff of the Python first off. I've made a Hat of the Toad (Giant Toad summoner) for my swamp druid and it was a huge hit.
never seen a debate over Counterspell while casting another spell it only has somatic but I have seen people say that using a magic item has to be an action but I have also seen JC mention that it would be pointless for it to take an action to interact with a magic object if it is a scroll of counterspell. he implied that if a magic item used a spell it used the economy of the spell plus the Rod specifies reaction. it would kinda defeat the purpose of the item if you have to hold your action to wait for the unwanted spell to target you.
Great video guys, thanks for the quality content again and again.
Also...
That spiffy moustache is awesome.
I wish I could rock an Epic Stache like Kelly can. That stache alone gives him a plus 5 to Charisma.
After Tasha's, I think the Eldritch Claw tattoo (a more generic item than insignia of the claw which is faction specific) takes that uncommon slot for druids.
Thanks for sharing another informative review! I especially like how you offered your suggestions for customising some items!
My Hill Dwarf Life Cleric was eagerly anticipating this video.
Ooh dragon scale mail sounds awesome!
I'm using a candle of invocation on my order cleric in curse of strahd. My first turn is almost always light the candle as my action, then bonus action cast bless. So useful.
If you're looking for a druids shield aesthetic the first thing that comes to mind would be monster hunter
Twilight cleric/star druid is one of my all time favourite builds, and the only magic items I requested from my dm were purely flavour. Stuff like a telescope that ignore other light sources shit like that.
Coz a star druid/twilight cleric is already the character
Jesus that stache leveled up from this passed Tuesday. So clean. So sharp
Kelly, I really like the mustash! Yes, it is me who said too read ch.6all the time!
A really good and simple magic item for clerics and paladins alike that can be useful is an amulet that puts out a cone of "daylight"
It affects vampires, gives light, and depending on the power of the item you can make the light cast banishment on evil outsiders as an action
As you said about a possible ring of heart, it would control the heart, so easy to add spells to it would be
-Friends
-Command
-Calm Emotions
-Charm person
-Suggestion
- POWER WORD KILL
What, you thought I wasn't thinking of telling a heart I command to stop?
Moses is actually my command word for my staff of the python
Love the stache Kelly!!! And this is a super helpful video!
I usually have this habit:
1. Cast a minute of goodberry at the beginning of adventure (1min of candle)
2. Use a minute of candle when you need advantage of skills checks in non-combat
( 1 min used)
3. Lighten candle when you are facing combats to gain advantage on attack roles and saving throws (1 min used)
4. Used extensively when needed for #3 and #4 (another 2 to 3 mins used)
Also have to include the Staff of Swarming Insects.
Captain Planet yes please, I would like a video of your interpretation of the Heart ring and Cap himself.
Staff of Woodlands is a great item for Rogues with Thief archetype too.
Rocking the stash, real props to Kelly!
Pipes of haunting are super useful on a cleric, as you often want to reserve your spell slots and need something punchy to do still
I would be Very happy to your Campaign as a healing Druid or cleric!
also, the neclace of prayer beads spells are bonus actions.
I thank the algorithm for introducing me to you guys. love your videos
Insignia of the claw was super good as my uncommon magic item, level 5 one shot. Bypassing non-magic resistance was excellent before it popped online.
I hear Staff of the Python, and my first thought was "Sticks to Snakes!"
What about amulet of the devout. It's staple for any cleric I played
