It was raining so hard, the organizers didn't know if Prince would be willing or able to take the stage. After confirming that he would, he was asked if there was anything he needed from them. He smiled and said, "Can you make it rain harder?" He knew how epic it would be to perform this song at the Super Bowl in the pouring rain.
💯 crazy to think we had Prince and MJ together. There is no talent like that now. And they are very different, but both oh so talented. Prince as a musician, songwriter, producer is unmatched though. I saw him in 2004. Both gone to soon.
When he passed away Minneapolis and St. Paul lit up buildings and bridges in the color purple in honor of Prince. That was how much he meant to our state. There will never, NEVER, be another like Prince Rogers Nelson. R.I.P. Prince.
And don't forget the world also did the same... London's Big Ben, Paris' Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House. Minnesota loves Prince and Europe does too - if anything, with the exceptionof Minnesota, he was adored more by the rest of the world than in the US. I think we got his being 'different' more.
@@thesolitaryadventurer That's the biggest bunch of nonsense I've ever heard. Bridges and buildings all over the US were lit in purple on April 21, 2016, including the Empire State Bldg in NYC. AND do note he's playing the NFL Superbowl in the US, not the World Cup. 'Prince wasn't popular in the US.' 🙄.
Minneapolis was not the only city that lit up buildings, bridges and etc... purple in honor and remembrance of Prince. Cities across the U.S.A. and all over the entire Globe did. It's just a crying shame that he was not shown that type of respect while he was alive for the artist, musician, musical genius and performer he truly was because of how controversial his music lyrics were early on in his career. It wasn't until after his death that people learned that Prince could play over 27 different musical instruments and wrote many top hits on the charts that were performed by different singers and groups (i.e. Manic Monday for the Bangles, Nothing Compares 2 U for Sinead O'Connor, Sugar Walls for Sheena Easton, and others), Prince was also responsible for several new groups and singers getting their start as well. As I stated Prince did not get the recognition he deserved while he was alive.
And the crowd went wild! Most stars would have cancelled because of the rain. He was a true performer. The fact that he was self-taught and wrote music for himself and others sets him apart. He is literally one of the greatest musical legends of all time.
It’s been 5 years since he passed, you should do a whole Prince retrospective. Adore, darling Nikki, beautiful ones, if I was your girlfriend, pink cashmere, power fantastic
Oh You should watch the whole halftime show. He performed in torrential rain with “the twins” several songs. So good. So perfection. They said are you sure you want to perform in the rain? He said... can you make it rain harder?
As soon as he starts to sing the lyrics I get chills. And now that he's gone and we don't get anything like this from him anymore makes we weep. But the music lives on.👍😀🎶❤️
Well, maybe we do. Google "Prince Welcome 2 America" He finalized an album in 2010, right down to a gold master ready for pressing, and then just decided not to release it, but it's coming out soon! Can't wait to hear it. Already heard the title track, and it's wonderful.
Just to let you know, there IS a longer version of this, plus one that includes the entire halftime set. What a MAGNIFICENT performance!! This was the all-time best Super Bowl halftime!! All that day they were talking about rain hitting the Super Bowl. I was with friends in Las Vegas, and we were talking about the rain and knowing Prince would be playing. How perfect would it be if it was raining because everyone knew he was gonna do this song. And sure enough...everything came together...literally the PERFECT STORM!!! There will NEVER be another Super Bowl halftime like this. Every year, they seem to be getting weaker and weaker. At least we will always have this one to look back on...
My goodness, this show was legendary... by a legendary artist. Not a lot of pyrotechnics, not a lot of dancers, no lip-syncing, just pure talent up on stage. And the natural rain during Purple Rain was all the show needed to make it come to life. Probably one of the most memorable, if not THE MOST MEMORABLE Superbowl halftime shows... EVER! Long life our Prince, may he rest in power.

He was asking if he could play the guitar because it was raining so hard he could be electrocuted. It was so dangerous to play an electric guitar in that weather. He always put on the best concerts, from start to finish. Prince always gave you a FULL concert and you definitely got your money’s worth. ❤️ Prince
No one can best this performance. Live vocals. Insane guitar. Pouring rain. The dancing. Totally captivating from start to finish.... I'm so glad I was able to see him play once...house lights went up after the last encore, they have left the stage, almost no one in the crowd left-we just kept clapping and yelling....he came back after maybe 15 mins and started playing When Doves Cry....we lost our minds........he was incredible
This made me tear up... cant believe all these great artists are gone. Prince was such an exceptional artist. Thank God I saw him live in 1990 singing this.
When I saw that halftime show, Prince and the music took my breath away. Seeing this performance again did the same. RIP to Prince, hands down one of the greatest musicians, songwriters, producers of all time!! He is sorely missed!
I saw him in concert April 7, 1985 in Miami at the Orange Bowl. Like you said he just had that power when he walked on to the stage. Purple Rain was the last song he played that night and the entire stadium was filled with lighters up and the crowd singing and swaying to the music. It was magic....RIP 💜

I was fortunate to see / hear Prince in his Purple Rain tour outside San Francisco and it was magical. During this song, there was a 'boom' and thousands of flowers came floating down on us. I wasn't there but I did watch the performance live. I didn't give a crap about the Super Bowl but I was studying for an exam and I knew Prince was performing, so I kept the Super Bowl on in the background so I could take a break when he did his performance...and man. Just knowing he was performing this while I watched was an incredible gift that I'll never forget. Even though it happening in a different part of the world, it made me feel like a part of something amazing.
I was lucky enough to have been there. I’m in the crowd along the stage. Words cannot describe the emotional power and magic of that evening. It was one of those moments in time that only happen once in a generation. God I miss Prince so much. I know he’s up in heaven making God and the angels smile.

Prince was such a unique entertainer; he had had his own style; he was a masterpiece
I was lucky enough to have been there. I’m in the crowd along the stage. Words cannot describe the emotional power and magic of that evening. It was one of those moments in time that only happen once in a generation. God I miss Prince so much. I know he’s up in heaven making God and the angels smile.
Every single aspect of this performance is absolutely legendary.
Best Halftime Performance ever. A LOT more Prince please
that was the first song I've heard from Prince. I was 12. and I never thought I would be able to see him live (I was growing up in the GDR) . but it happened a few years ago in Vienna. what a night, Prince together with Sheila E. on stage ... He was unique. R.I.P.
Amazing amazing amazing artist I can't stress that enough. R.I.P Prince this world misses u immensely.

I'm a bit shocked you've never heard Prince before, but its cool that you did this. Best ever!
One of the 3 best artists I've seen on stage. The Lovesexy Tour 88 was magic ! RIP Purple Genius.
Saw him in concert in Houston. Wow, wow, wow!. What a performance.

WAS BLESSED TO SEE HIM LIVE ON HIS MUSICOLOGY TOUR IN BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA... BEST CONCERT IN MY LIFE...
🙏🏽💜🎶🎤🎸🎹🥁
For me, this is the best super bowl halftime performance ever. Raining during purple rain, so iconic. I remember they were worried about Prince playing electric guitar in the rain, and he asked them if they could make it rain more, lol.
Whoop whoop! What a special performance!!! Rest In Peace Prince!!!
I miss my handsome Prince 😭
In the rain
In heels
In a du-rag
ONLY PRINCE 👏🏾👏🏾
