- LUMIX s5iix is BETTER Than the Sony FX3
In this video I give my opinions on the Sony FX3 and why I think the Lumix S5iiX is a better camera for filmmakers. I cover why I think the Sony FX3 2nd base ISO of 12800 is too high and still noisy. I feel the Lumix s5iix has a perfect 2nd base ISO of 4000 which is a sweet spot, not too high or too low. I also mention how the Lumix s5iix has gimbal-like stabilization over the Sony FX3. Better battery life and better dynamic range when recovering the highlights.
Gear I use and love. 👇🏾

Maturing is realizing Lumix cameras are so underrated.
Facts!
Lumix seems to have a more natural, film like quality to their log profile. And that image stabe is unbeatable.
Switched from SONY A7siii to LUMIX S5ii. IBIS on lumix is just insane! Such a good camera for the price!
Thinking about get mine as well. Looks like a great deal coming from fx30 and other sony's.
Oh man. I am on the fence.
How is the low light compared to Sony?
@@teegreenburg not huge difference but really good, I can't tell much more cause I did not shot with fx3 or fx6 but compared with equivalent camera (in terms of price) lumix beats it far away.
I never managed to get that quality low light with a Sony A7IV, S-log is 🤮
AND the auto focus is getting way better! It's super usable now.
Bro I appreciate the realness of this. I now have 3 - S5ii and 1 - S5 IIX for event shoots and I was catching it from people also 😂
Panasonic? That old news.... A week ago i clicked on your video, for the lols, just to see the drama in the comments from sony boys.... yesterday i just picked up the s5iix. Thank you sir
Love how much love Lumix is getting recently, been shooting on lumix since 2012 and they have always been laughed at because of their contrast autofocus system but image quality, ibis and amount of features has always been top tier. if you dont mind using manual focus, try the s1h, it looks literally like film...
Exactly! I keep wanting to switch from my S1, but aside from the AF there's nothing wrong with it at all. Absolutely amazing camera
I'm with you. We switched from Canon to Sony to BMD and now to the S5iix. S5iix is almost perfect. I am excited for the S1H, BS1H, and EVA updates. I'm hopeful that they make a full frame EVA with ND.
It is just me? Or there are others too noticing the jello effect in some of the clips where the camera man is walking around?
Its wobbling quite hard when u have IBIS and the other stabelization on but u can turn the harsh ones off and it stops wobbling so disgustingly hard
“Low light does not equal no light” has been my sentiment exactly. Great video! I’m looking to get this LUMIX to pair with my Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Same mount type but that stabilization is key for me. Cheers!
Yeah! S5IIx really does shine. Had mine about 5 months now and honestly, everything about it is a pleasure to use. Images are beautiful. Not to mention the cine type features and all the codec options. Lumix on the rise. Good work!
The codecs go crazy! Thanks!
@@lexgraham I’ve not even gone into ProRes or Blackmagic yet.. All-I has been my go to so far! But, with this camera, there’s room to grow without buying a new one.
The title is a bold statement. with love, an s5 iix owner
now this one's real
Lumix colors pop like no other
Doc you here too
Love the colors much better on the Panasonic. Feature for feature I think the S5iiX is the best value you can find on the market. I love using it.
This is the beauty about being a creator: just because one tool works for someone else doesn't mean it's going to work for you. Great take! As a previous S5IIX owner, I can say it's a fantastic camera that is constantly being supported by LUMIX (something Sony seriously sucks at). Funny enough, I'm using an FX3 now, but I appreciate everything LUMIX is doing and I'm keeping an eye out for the successor to the S1H (my next camera).
Lumix seems to have amaizing colors mann , and i get you when you say you feel inspired when you take it !
I have the s5iix, I LOVE EVERY SINGLE INCH OF IT! The only issue is that, I barely use full frame sensor size because I realize I've been buying APS-c/Super 35 lenses as most of them fits my budget. Especially the anamorphics. I'm planning to sell it and get the GH6ii or maybe I'll just wait a little longer and see if they release a better the BGH1... with PDAF and all the extra features
Try getting a vintage 35mm f1.8 manual focus. It’ll change your life. Canon fd is your friend
Love it dude! Every time I have to use FX3/A7S III for work I end up so annoyed with it. Definitely some things I like about it, but much prefer living with a Panasonic. A specs sheet tells you nothing about the overall experience you get from these cameras. I have an S1 and when the ONLY thing I'd really wanna change about it is the autofocus after years of ownership, that's how I know it's a good one
I agree that the Lumix S5iix is a great camera. The only issue is that it only delivers cropped 4K 60fps. And if you are like me that loves slowmo B-Roll, that is an issue. That's the big difference with the FX3. Cheers!
I sold my bmpcc 6k for the s5iix. I do not regret it.
If you were able to keep the bm as a B cam, for like interviews, would you have?
@@NostalgicNick79 of course. But I wanted 2 s5iix’s tho. lol. I used my BM and Linux together for about 6 months. But was slowly fading away from the BM and was leaning more towards my LUMIX.
Can you explain more why? I am in the same situation. The bm has something magical to its image but I just hate everything else about it 😅 I would love to minimize my set up a bit
I know how you feel. It was hard to let go of the BM because of that special texture it has in the image but filming in 6k on LUMIX with v-log and a lil softening in post makes it really close
yeah i need to make some tests myself. i too think with the right custom lut they look pretty similiar. and you dont have to struggle with ir pollution xD What do you think about the huge hdmi latency? do you think its workable with an external monitor? on the bm there was literally no one@@lexgraham
I just sold my FX30 for the S5ii. But, that was after researching and watching a lot of videos comparing the two. I started filmmaking with the GH5; which I actually shot a feature film with. I went to Sony for the AF. But now with the S5ii/x, autofocus is not an issue anymore. I’m pretty excited. Great music, by the way.
Hey why not go for the s5iix2? Just learning about these camera s
Just wanna say thank you! I had difficulty deciding between the FX3 and the S5IIX. I almost went for the much more expensive FX3. But this video showed me that you don't need the most expensive thing to get stunning shots. I think I'll go for the S5IIX.
glad i could help!
Amen, brother. You hit on all the points. I use Canon, Sony and Lumix now and have been blown away by the S5iiX. The SSD and codecs are amazing. Stabilization is top tier. And I love to grade VLOG.
V Log is something else 🔥
The colors on my S5iiX feel the closest to when I shot on the Alexa mini. I LOVE mine.
Ive been panasonic for years and tried the sony FX30 and returned it after 1 week and went with s5iix
Awesome vid man!! Subbed. I just got my s5iix a few weeks ago, planning my first video with it now.
Thanks for the sub!

Dope boots indeed! Are they from Keen footwear?

Opening shot with NYC and good jazz music. That's a type of "bon goût" intro I rarely see on YT. Nice!
Beautiful grading and camera work! I think you pointed out the biggest problem with the FX3 low light. 12800 is just a bit too high and it has way too much NR baked in on top of a 4k image making the shadows noticeably soft and smudgy.
The battery life is interesting. Do you live in a colder region? Lumix cameras and batteries hold up very well in cold climates unlike other cameras. On paper, they're both actively cooled cameras with a decently sized batter, so should be pretty similar.
The fx3 battery was terrible. Just fiddling with camera settings would drain the battery. but on the LUMIX s5iix I get double the battery life
When I bought my s1h , I tried telling people . LUMIX is a tough brand . I just ordered this one . And waiting for the new s1h 2 . The look of lumix is crazy .
@@jaybuckets2153 I agree. I don’t need another camera but when the new version of the S1H comes out that’s going to be hard to ignore
My exact thoughts. They are scared to let you turn the NR off.
It doesn’t matter because the marketing team can convince every camera shill channel to push and push products.
I just picked up a A7Cii for stills. I'm sticking with my Lumix GH6 for video. Sony has a long way to catch up to Lumix, there cameras are stacked with cinema tools.
I never understood how people identifying themself with brandnames so hard.
I shoot on the fx9 and I love it.. but if lumix is your number one choice, go for it.
At the end of the day the camera ist just a tool for your creativity, so everybody should use the one which fits for them the most.
Bro if Reviewers can make videos LYING, then he can make a video REPLYING! #BARS
agree on all points, if anything I would love for them to make an APSC camera so that we can get the APSC cine lenses from Laowa, Sirui etc, yes you can mount them onto the S5II and shoot in APSC mode but I think it would make it more practical for regular buyers who just want a small simple setup that looks amazing yet doesn't cost what the FX30 does.
I love how candid and down to earth this review is - it's exactly what I needed. Thanks man, best of luck with your channel +subbed!
@@ZHLodhi thanks 😊
Lumix is on fire when it comes to film. I switched back when the S1 came out and now I'm a X user as well.
Love the honesty in this !!! And am subbing 👏
Thanks Jeff!
about to shoot another show with my s5iix and i love this thing. its just beautiful to shoot with
Just saying that i love your shots throughout the video. You picked some nice locations and the low light footage really looks good.
Thanks 😊
How about that Rolling Shutter?
Off topic, but thanks for using that nice jazz piece instead of a lo-fi chill track like everyone else seems to do for background music 👍 😅
you spittin facts
Really enjoyed seeing those shots. Where can I see more of them?
@@ricochetgraphics6140 night shots around the city?
I've used Canon, Nikon, and Lumix for over a decade for military work (personal & work gear). When I got out and worked my first civilian job, my company gave me a decent budget to order whatever camera gear I wanted. I ordered the fx3 and a bunch of Sony lenses, cuz youtubers do make it seem like a god-tier camera. Boy was I disappointed😅. My number one complaint is that menu system is horrendous. The footage that comes out of the fx3 is good, but not "blow other cameras out of the water great." So many cameras shoot quality imagery nowadays. You really can't go wrong. The AF is great, but I'm coming from being taught to manually focus everything you know.
I knew i wasn’t alone when I felt like that
did you use glimmer glass filters here? ^^
Both cameras get the job done well in my view, I have and use both systems. Just depends what works for you and Panasonic works for you. Cool!
Simple
Well done from top to bottom. I've never seen you before but I just subscribed 👍🏽 There's one major component you missed. PRICE$$$. I looking at the sony and realized I could get 2 s5IIX's for the price of 1 sony... body only.
Been saying for years , lumix is the best . Hands down . S1H is my favorite camera . Can’t wait for the 2 . Just ordered this camera . And waiting for the s1h2 for a 2 camera setup. Great take my guy. Keep grinding
When the new version of the S1h comes out, I’m going to have to hide my wallet from myself 🤣
Depends on what you do. It’s a great camera but it’s readout speed is way to slow for my work. So my best pick is the Fuji’s XH2s, having some of the fastest readout speeds in the market, + its 14bit readout.
All great cameras though. Throughout recent years, I don’t think there is any camera out there that is flat out smoking another camera. It really comes down to the operator, how they expose the sensor, and how they process the footage in post.
@@Eyeofkamau I never watched a movie or documentary and felt it was ruined because of bad rolling shutter but yeah it’s a great thing to have. If you enjoy using it that’s all that matters tbh. look at my friends channel who uses a GH5, and his stuff is incredible and he refuses to leave it.
@@lexgraham me either, it definitely throws me off though lol. I’m just one of those that really value proper rendition of motion.
Again though, it depends on what’s being done. If I’m not filming anything that doesn’t require a blazing fast readout speed, then the rolling shutter isn’t a factor.
GH5 is great by the way, I actually started my photo/video journey with Lumix.
As a new GH6 owner, I dare say, very impressive work and commentary here, Bruh. Subbed. Also, what's the channel your Gh5 buddy is on?
This vid largely reads as, "I like my new camera because it's still new and I like it." But I think we can all relate to that honeymoon phase.
S5iix is a great camera and a wonderful addition to the market. It's more comparable to an a7 IV than the FX3, and it really does one up the older a7 IV in a big way (with a few exceptions). It doesn't quite replace the FX3/FX6/a7s III for those who shoot in a variety of frame rates and the rolling shutter is pretty garbage looking if you are shooting faster moving subjects (I shoot sports and athletics so the S5IIX got returned pretty quickly even though I loved it) - same goes for the autofocus... just doesn't hold up the quick moving subjects like the Sony.
The a7s III, FX3 and even the a7 IV are all pretty old now. I'm interested to see what Sony has coming out this year that will compete in the 6K range. But until then, the S5IIX is a great camera for a lot of people who want a great look and flexible footage and who aren't shooting fast moving subjects.
Probably. But even then I’d choose a Fujifilm xh2s over an FX3. That way I get great rolling shutter performance and 4k120 and still maintain pro res hq and if I need 6k open gate it’s there. While still being able to shoot 40fps burst in photo mode if needed. Then if I need. Raw that’s an option too. As far as AF it works for me. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. FX3 is cool, but I wasn’t trying to film Rally car races
Looking to upgrade from a7iii. Was looking at higher Sony models; however, Black Magic dropped their sale and it took me down a rabbit hole that lead me to the LUMIX s5iix. After your video and some other articles, seems like a no-brainer jump! Budget friendly and has everything I need, especially having ProRes already, not requiring Atomos.
Awesome video and footage. I own two Lumix S5 II's and I might even add a third.
Omg That intro was beautiful! I was debating between the fx3 and the s5iix but honestly after watching your video , Im buying the s5iix
Keep up the good work !
Sold. Thank you for your thoughts my friend. Cheers from Cali!
Honest review! I use an s5 and other Panasonic cameras . Love them! I only wish they didnt discontinue their cinema line asI use rhe EVA-1 and need to upgrade very soon so canon, black magic and Sony have to be my choice by default.
A Panasonic Cinema line is definitely needed rn
Well I was a GH5 User and then S5iix and switched to a ZV-E1 from Sony and never looked back. The S5ii is for the price a good camera but it has an outdated sensor with bad rolling shutter and very low readout speed. For me the biggest problem was the very limited lense selection combined with the slow sensor and the resulting crop in 4k60. I shoot like 90% in 4k60 and that is just a bummer for a relatively new camera like the s5ii. Well but for some people it maybe an ok compromise if you also take photos. For me as a video only camera it was not as great as I hoped it to be. Sabilization is of course very good (even though not as smooth as the dynamic active from Sony but you also introduce a crop then).
Nice color grading by the way!
100% agree !! Lumix image is more organic and the color science is amazing. Stabilization and fun to use for run and gun. Love your review !!
Just got my first sony. A74. I like handheld looks so i hope it is a great canera for me. I still love lumix 4/3 but cant find accessories here in philippines.
If you enjoy using it that’s all that matters tbh. look at my friends channel who uses a GH5, and his stuff is incredible and he refuses to leave it.
all lumix needs is s5iii with z6iii specs. im a r6ii user. i like lumix stabilization. good video.
Wait….. the fucking lumix camera has literally everything the Sony A series lacks for many steps down in price…. I feel betrayed by Sony. WTH
Lex thanks for sharing the low light on this camera is great! What's your choice of lenses for this camera for shooting video? I like that you can use an external ssd drive too!
S5ii shooter. The full time gig just got me an Fx3. Looking forward to comparing them this weekend!
@@prestonurvina lmk how it goes! And which one you felt was better for you

Great video! I'm surprised by your comment regarding battery life, I'm managing to get a measly 45min -1 hour recording in 6k open gate.
This is really convincing. I have a A7sIII and shoots concerts and sports! How would the S5iix Handle those two scenarios?
Sold my a7s3 and got the Lumix (kept my old A7r3 for photos). The Lumix rules but the AF is frustrating compared to Sony's, he mentioned that the battery life lasted longer, I don't find that to be the case, rolling shutter sucks so that is something to think about, slow motion is superior ok the Sony on every level. Emwith all of that said, the Lumix is a blast to use and makes up for those flaws when it comes to features and joy to use.
I would definately stick with the a7s iii. It is another league of camera. Same as the FX3. The Lumix s1h II will be a proper contender if it comes out.
a7siii is years ahead
Very nice insight, love the look or your image also. Aren't you concerned by the fact that you cannot shoot 4K 60fps without crop? And what about the rolling shutter, it is little infamous about that?
The crop doesn’t bother me. Especially when using a wide angle lens. As far as rolling shutter, people over stress it. I’ve never watched a movie, a game or anything and went “turn it off, it’s terrible cause of the rolling shutter”
Can you comment on latest firmware: did Panasonic fix exposure jump in photos when pressing af button? Regarding af in Fuji: I saw a dissapointed utuber saying xh2s in actually worse now with upgrades. Did you mange’s to check that too?
Yeah on XH2s when updated to the latest firmware the AF went downhill. the AF was superb but after 3.0 it’s accuracy fell off. This I can confirm.
@@lexgraham so 3.0 is last good firnware update. didi you try the 5.10? any diffrence?
Well-done brother 🎉
Interesting. A good point about the 2nd base ISO. It would be great if cameras had 3 base ISOs:-) as everyone's needs can vary so much. One advantage of a very high base is that we have the option of stopping down when needed. I know everyone likes to shoot wide open most of the time these days, but this might not always bee appropriate, so at least when it is set very high we have a choice. I personally hate using NDs, and think internal ND's should be standard on any videocentric camera.
bro I have a s5iix and all the reasons I love it you said perfectly!
the only real thing I think fx3 has over the lumix is the 4k 120 since I do like to use slow mo often. but in 1080 the quality is incredible especially since it is 422 and the flex on the colors/exposure is still amazing.
great video man!
@@DonovanLee thanks man I appreciate it! Yeah and in DaVinci you can upscale the 1080/ 120 footage which is a nice hack no one mentions.

i have both and luv them both, i am pretty sure you have the new firmware installed on the Lumix now, as for the FX3 it`s rolling shutter is very good almost next to none.

@@MikeFelkerVideos thanks I used sigma 24-70 f2.8 in 6k open gate/ all-I
Great review, just wondering were you using the autofocus in the talking headshots and throughout the video or manual focus?
Manual focus. I just think it’s fun to manual
Autofocus is terrible so of course he didn’t lmao
Great video. What lenses did you use to capture the footage. Also are you recording to an ssd ?
@@canjamcooks yeah on this day we were going into my SSD. All-Intra codec. This day I used the Sigma 24-70 f2.8
I completely agree. The only reason I need one is because I'm loosing out on jobs where they require Sony cams and everyone is shooting Sony. Everyones footage looks the same, they all use phantom luts lol. I'm still on the OG S5.
I’ve had that happen to me too. It’s so stupid and disrespectful cause it’s like telling a barbershop “I won’t let you cut my hair unless you use Andis clippers” like the person operating it doesn’t matter 🤣
I've heard of this, LOL! Their loss. I have the OG S5 and the S5ii. Both get the job done excellently for every application other than those that require super fast mechanical shutter burst capability.
Cool video. Side by side comparisons would help us see what you mean. They shot the movie with David Washington on the FX3. Would love to see film like shots on the Panasonic
Also I have a Song A7iv as my content camera and it’s great but would it be worth selling for the Panny?
If you enjoy using it that’s all that matters tbh. look at my friends channel who uses a GH5, and his stuff is incredible and he refuses to leave it.
@@lexgraham I do love Panasonic because I used to have a GH4 and then a GH5. I always said if they come with that IBIS in a full frame I would get it. But I moved on and got a black magic then a Sony before they dropped the S5IIx. I do a lot of social media content and hate turning my camera sideways so I use my iPhone mostly but this has open gate so I’m thinking about it.
For me the S52 is the best because I move when I am shooting and I am almost 60 and need the Ibis, especially after the 3.0 update. The Ibis is magical. The AF is great as well. They just put the Blackmagic Full frame 6K on sale for $1600 and I am skipping it because I need Ibis but if you don't stop reading this and get that Camera. I love V-log and it has great dynamic range but I admit that is subjective. The S52 weakness is with slow motion. Over 30fps you are in APSC mode for 4K and even 1080p falls back to contrast focus at 60fps full frame.
The bottom line for 30fps and under at 1080, 4k, and even 6K open gate the S52 an s52x are GREAT,. For full-frame slow motion look elsewhere,
Amazing low light content. Was it all intra? Or what codec
ALL-I but I started using prores
Noice. Killer footage bro
I'm currently in the market for a camera for my RUclips channel, as well as client photography work...
The S5iiX is the primary camera on my radar at the moment.
What lenses would you recommend if you were to get 3?
the 18mm the 35mm and the 85mm
I shot a scene today on the S5 II and I had to tell my son (videoing) to be a bit wild with his movements because otherwise the stabilisation was basically turning him into a human tripod.
🤣 you literally have to turn it off to get that chaotic look
Love this and am debating the same thing. I love Sony and its ecosystem, but I don't know, I miss my GH camera and it's ridiculous IBIS (didn't miss the poor autofocus on it, but I made due).
Just bought mine and I love it. I also gave the sigma FP the Lumix and sigma colors are my favorite.
@@davidclark2476 I was looking at the sigma fp last night. What did you think about it. I’m tempted to get it as a dedicated cinema camera

@@davidclark2476 after seeing how flexible it is to recover highlights and shadows im really tempted
I got the S5IIX, and my colleague has the FX3, we make a lot of projects together, and when I'm color grading, the FX3 is always a little weird, I have to remove yellow in the shots. And its like 3x the price. Plus the high iso is so high, as you mentioned, that you have to use ND in LOW LIGHT. WTF
This guy just dropped facts without feelings❤❤❤ I need to try this camera you talking about. So this Camera or Sony ZV -E1, which one will you pick? I know the zv-E1 comes with crazy stabilization. I want to hear your take. Good one brother!!
LUMIX s5iix. I actually had a guy who was begging to trade with me after he used the s5iix
I had both but switched to ZV-E1 but it depends on your use case. I need 4k60 which the s5ii can only deliver with a crop.
Your Lumix footage looks great.
