I watched this 10 months ago and thought the next time I do a live edge I'll try this well I didn't I forgot then after pratting around for longer than the turning I remembered for th next one. I did it slightly differently, putting a hole in with a spade bit, mounting to a set of pin jaws, bring round, adjust and away you go, came out far more balanced on high and low than any others I've tried so thanks for the idea, lost the bark in a careless moment but you can't have it all ways. Many thanks.

The bead indeed looks cool, and the shift does give some extra character! Nicely done, very smooth and light work, gentle man! Thank you!

Thanks for this contribution. I particularly appreciated the adjustment process with the recess. I will try it ! I might have painted the rim and also under the bead of the small bowl, which would cover the black sanding residues.

Nice pair of bowls, Tom! Great edges and the bead really sets them off. I really like the way the larger one dried. I had one vase with a narrow base that distorted so far that it almost tipped over once it was dry.
I am fortunate to have Box Elder (Manitoba Maple) plentiful on the Canadian prairies and when maple bugs have been at it is when the red flame appears. Beautiful to look at and cuts so nicely. Tim Yoder just turned two platters of Box Elder. In his video he comments that the red flame will fade with time. He is correct, the colour will fade. UV light accelerates it, so a UV protective finish will help. Tim mentioned knowing a turner who would dye the red areas to match so that when the natural colour fades the dye will still be there. It's true, the dye is a great idea and will last longer, but light will change it, just as it will darken the wood. Just thought I'd share the UV protection info to readers.
Thanks for keeping up the Four Ways projects.

That's a lovely looking pair of bowls. Great grain on the big one. A shame the bark didn't hold on. but it's not the season for bark-edge bowls. Looking forward to see what you can do with curved coring blades. And many thanks for the tool handling tips and another excellent and educational video.

Those are lovely. I just got some wet Oak tonight, from a friend who works with Roads Service, so I am going to try putting that little bead on some of them. My friend also told me he will watch out for good wood at any tree removals and bring me some. I think my wife was thrilled when she heard there was more wood arriving. LOL
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

This wood is not an elder but a member of the maple family (ACER) and its botanical name is Acer Negundo. Where I live in Edmonton Albert Canada we refer to it as Manitoba Maple of ash leaved maple. This is probably where it has been given a name a name of a species (elder) which it is not. Manitoba maples are prone to burls and when stressed will turn bright red to pink in the heart wood.
I have just been directed to your site by a fellow turner and been having a self-mini-symposium and have watched half a dozen of your videos in the passed couple days. I have been very impressed by the way you work your tool control and explain what you are doing. I have brought your name up to the local guild as a must watch for all turners particularly beginners as you have a great teaching technique. I personally am closely watching your tool control and have change my tool use and grind accordingly and am having great success.

Thank you Tomislav. I enjoy your videos and learn something from each one. I dont know if you can answer questions here but i"ll ask any way. I have a 12x21 midi lathe. when I put a fairly large piece of wood on it to do a bark edge bowl I have trouble when i get to the inside. My lathe shakes and I cant get up enough speed to get a smooth cut. thanks for any help you can provide.

    • @tomislavtomasicwoodturning
      @tomislavtomasicwoodturning  3 месяца назад

Hi, well a lot can couse lathe to shake, imbalance piece, not bolted down, bad lathe....
But what I would try depends on your setup, try to bold down lathe to a table if you have, and the table to floor.
Also try to find if it sits on the floor correct.
Finally ,some pieces,if the grain is on one side of bowl dense and on other spalted, that can shake 400kg lathe without to much issue ,let alone midi lathe.
Send me an email after you check these stuff mentioned if it doesn't help,so I could try help out further.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the lathe bolted to a cabinet but the cabinet is not bolted to the floor. I will try to see if there is a way that I could bolt it to the floor. thanks for your help and all of your videos.

hi. I tried attaching the cabinet to the floor and that helped alot. I still got a little vibration until I got it balanced. after that there was no more shaking. Thank you so much for your help both for this problem and all the other videos you make. I dont know how you have time to make a living when you are making videos and helping out other people. Thanks again for your help and your videos. you make me a much better turner. Not as good as you though, I'll probably never be as good as you. Have a great day. Barry
