Winter Camping Alone near WOLVES! -10ºC

- This was one of the most incredible nights I have ever spent camping in the wild. It started off as a warmer-than-usual February day for this part of Ontario, Canada. The temperatures were set to dip back down to around -10℃ overnight, and I had approximately 4kms to cover to reach my intended camping location. I set off midday in the warm sun, quickly shedding layers of clothing to avoid getting too hot. About halfway to where I intended on camping, I spotted a beautiful spot that I couldn't resist. I wasted little time setting up my tarp and collecting firewood for the long cold night ahead.
As the evening set in, I was finally able to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labour. Dinner was simple, some German sausages cooked over the fire. I also treated myself with some hot chocolate and one of my favourite snack cakes. I enjoyed the warmth of the fire for several hours before finally retreating into in my sleeping bag as the cold night crept in. I fell asleep quickly, tired from a full day’s work.
Just before 2am, I was suddenly awoken by the sound of a large wolf howling nearby! Soon after, two more wolves began howling to my right side! And shortly after that, the entire pack (from a different direction and a bit further away) began howling back!
I fumbled in the dark to get my camera setup for well over 2 minutes. The largest sounding wolf was very close to me. In my estimation, he could not have been any further than 300 - 400 feet away. Under a full moon, the sound his howls traveled hauntingly through the cold night air. What an incredible - albeit hair-raising! - experience. I was not able to capture those initial howls on audio, but what you can hear in the video is the larger pack howling back.
I hope you enjoy. Your comments, likes and subscriptions are truly appreciated.

I was in awe of the night sky, and excited to hear the wolves, and also full of nerves when it went on and on through till morning. Nature at its best. Well done!
Thank you! 😊
The night sky was so incredibly beautiful it made me emotional... THEN the wolves. OMG! What an amazing experience! Wow. I can't imagine what it would be like to be there listening to that. What a magical experience that must have been. I would love to hear that one day. I would need nothing more in my life to make it complete. And then I slightly spoiled the dream by realising you were wrapped up cosy in your sleeping bag like the perfect wolf-size burrito snack...
It really was an incredible experience Louise. Probably the most special experience I've ever had out in the wild. But it also did get my heart racing a bit. As you noted, I was quite vulnerable laying out there like a burrito 😄
OMG what I wouldn't give to hear wolves like that at night! That must have been SUCH a magical moment!!!
It was the most magical experience I've ever had in the wilderness. The first wolf that woke me up was SO CLOSE to me! Glad you enjoyed :)
11:08 thought you were gonna belt one out & join them! 😆
😄
You were lucky they were soooo close!..The sound in the video is great and as you said what a night in the woods!!👍
I really was Morgan! It was an incredible experience. Thanks for commenting!
I love this style of video. Very immersive.
Thank you!
Great video! The time-lapse was spectacular. Keep up the great work.
Thanks bampot! I always appreciate your feedback.
That was some serious wolfage going on! Even in he daylight!
I know! I must have been camped very close to their den.
Another great video! The wolves howling was very cool. Cheers
Thanks Blake! Glad you enjoyed!
Great video. The sound of the wolves was wild. It’s not often you hear them during the day.
Yeah. I feel like their den must have very close to where I was camping. I had no idea when I picked that spot. Just got lucky!
I love being in the wild, and at the same time, I have a phobia of wild animals. That howling of the wolves was terrifying.
Hi Saadia. I really enjoyed the experience, but I can see how it could be frightening if you have a phobia of wild animals.
Damn that shit! My ass would've started building a Shelter.. 😂..
😂
Wonderful sounds of the wild, thanks for sharing the experience, very enjoyable 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Jim!
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
@@kevinthewild You're very welcome, my friend!
Jee whiz ! gave me cold chílls. Glad they stayed away from you.
It was an incredible experience!
All those wolves and a full moon to boot. That's some serious mojo! 🙂 How many do you guess there were?
I was incredibly lucky! It sounded like it was a fairly large pack, with multiple adults and pups.
Awesome video. Very calming .
Thanks Jennifer!
What an incredible experience. I don't know if I would've been able to sleep after hearing that :D.
😄
Check one more off my list! Nice winter overnighter! One of my coolest experiences at our cabin was hearing a pack of wolves howling to the right of us while a pack of coyotes were yipping away to the left! They went back and forth all night. Amazing! Take care Kev!
That must have been a very cool experience!
It really was awesome!@@kevinthewild
Kevin, I am impressed.
Excellent video, Kev! Really well done. It makes the viewer feel like they were there, so much so that my dog now thinks there are wolves in my laptop!
😂 thank you!
I would be freaking! And I would be outa there. Everyone says they aren't afraid of wolves but wolves seem to attack as much as bears.
It would have been a really long trek out of there in the dark… I stayed alert and kept my knife close at hand - but I really enjoyed the experience.
Oh wow, this is crazy 😳
wowww, this was a really cool video Kev 😌
Thank you!
How close were those Wolves? Closer than what you were thinking I'm taking it. Fantastic footage! ✌️
The first adult wolves that began howling in the middle of the night could not have been further than a few hundred feet away from me. The rest of the pack (with pups) sounded like it was a little bit further but still very close.
@@kevinthewild that was some awsome footage. I would have to been there. I love videos like this. 👍
I feel very lucky for this experience. Glad you enjoyed watching!
Your eyes were wide as saucers at 2 am with them yapping away Bro! What an encounter! Were you up or downwind of them?
There wasn’t a breath of wind that night. The forest was so quiet until they started howling. They were so close to me (especially the first one that I wasn’t able to capture in time). It was the most incredible experience I’ve had in the backcountry. Thanks for commenting!
Apparently Wolves like sausages too!
