- There's a story behind the making of John Lennon's album Rock 'N' Roll involving The Beatles song "Come Together." When the project for the album began in October 1973, Phil Spector was the producer, who had many of his early 1963 musicians called in to do the instrumentals as John sang along. The sessions were riddled with craziness, disruptions and arguments that led to Phil absconding the tapes. John held sessions without Phil in late 1974 to do more songs. A TV-only purchase of John Lennon Sings The Great Rock & Roll Hits on Adam VIII Records was available in 1975 which led to Apple's Rock 'N' Roll release. Some of the Adam VIII tracks were not used by Apple, but did appear years after John's assassination in special releases approved by Yoko. Among them was "Be My Baby," a Ronettes song Phil had produced over ten years earlier.
Here is a rare alternate version of that song, released on the Italian label Vigotone. It was edited in front with some studio chatter between John and Phi, with mentions of Jethro Tull, Elton John and John's claim of becoming a 90-year-old Guru. Among the musicians Phil had in the studio during those October-December sessions were Oklahomans Jim Keltner on drums and Leon Russell on piano!
Wonder if this recording was lost or something until the '90s? Otherwise, why would it not have been on Menlove Avenue in '86. This is so great, one of my favorite Lennon outtakes.
How interesting. I'm a bit confused about the whole story, but love learning that Leon and John DID record together. I knew they met, but not played on anything together. Thanks for the history and music!
