Larry Knechtel 1990 "Laura Lee" cover of David Gates 1973 "Lorilee" Bread
Larry Knechtel was a great multi-instrumentalist, as a session man who was part of The Wrecking Crew, as a solo artist (as Larry Nelson and Larry Knechtel) and as a member of the successful 70s band Bread. One of Larry's greatest achievements was winning a Grammy as pianist on Simon & Garfunkel's massive hit "Bridge Over Troubled Waters."
From his 1990 release Urban Gypsy, here is Larry's arrangement of Laura Lee," a song written by David Gates of Bread. Larry played a variety of keyboards on it with Joe Khoury on acoustic guitar, Reggie Young on electric guitar, Michael Rhodes on electric bass, Eddie Bayers on drums and Vince Borranco on percussion. Assisting Larry with synth programming...

Here is another instrumental from the second album by The Routers, with covers of 1963 instrumental hits. Producer Joe Saraceno had Ray Pohlman as arranger and session leader. The second day's taping of seven tracks included a cover of "Washington Square," which had recently been released The Village Stompers and climbed to Number Two. It was covered in 1963 by at least six artists, including T...

Matthew Moore was the guy that wrote "Space Captain," a song made popular by Joe Cocker as the flipside of Joe's rendition of The Box Tops hit "The Letter" as arranged by Leon Russell, the musical director of Joe's Mad Dogs & Englishmen troupe during the 1970 tour. Leon had worked with Matthew in 1964 as pianist on two Chuck Berry covers ("Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" and "Around and Around") when ...

Clydie King's career as a singer spanned over twenty year, beginning in 1956. Here is a unique song from a very collectible single that both Leon Russell and David Gates were involved with. On February 6, 1963, Leon Russell was pianist and led a session at the legendary Gold Star Studio tracking three songs for Jack Tracy and Mercury Records. The players contracted by drummer Hal Blaine for the...

Songbird and guitarist Phoebe Snow had one big solo hit, that being her own song "Poetry Man," a Top Ten hit in spring 1975. It was from her self-titled 1974 album on Shelter Records, which was produced by Dino Airali during October and November 1973. She and Paul Simon shared a hit in fall 1975 with "Gone At Last," from Paul's fourth solo album Still Crazy After All These Years. Shelter also r...

Here's another song that fans of Leon Russell probably know from Russell's 1984 album Hank Wilson Vol II. In 1973 Leon used the names of two of his favorite country stars, HANK WILliams and Hank ThompSON and came up with Hank Wilson, which he used as sort of a country alter ego for recordings of popular country songs. Here is a 1962 instrumental of Hank Snow's Number One hit "I'm Movin' On," wh...

The story behind Delaney & Bonnie's 1971 album Motel Shot (with their hit "Never Ending Song of Love") is that it had been recorded in a hotel, when in fact it was done partly in the living room of Atlantic producer Bruce Botnick and partly in a studio. The album was reissued in an Expanded Edition in 2017, which has liner notes and interviews explaining how that happened. From the original alb...

Frank Devol led a group called Happy Kine and His Mirth Makers on the Martin Mull TV vehicle called fernwood 2 night and later called America tonight when it was picked up by the network. This was sometime and the early '70s they played the house band like a cheap doc severenson. Tommy tedesco played guitar in that band sorry I do not know the other players but they had hilarious cameos. Those shows are available in their entirety elsewhere here on RUclips. Devol himself was deadpan funny as the leader Happy Kine.

Thanks for sharing the upload! And the Contract and liner notes, (I think you might have reversed credits for Percussion and Drums as my late father, Milt Holland, was usually the percussionist on these kind of sessions - real interesting to see the contract sheet as was one of the people who got studios to pay scale for each overdub, he didn't approve of the production trying to save money using overdubs when they first started happening, so he demanded that each overdubbed track to get its own pay. The production had to want that particular Musician style rather than to try to save money by overdubbing. )

1:51 very cool! note the Contract shows double-scale notes here (our late father Milt Holland demanded that when overdubbing musicians must be paid this way rather than productions saving money on overdubs, so additional pay was for each track. He felt that if Studio wanted to overdub they should want to do it because they wanted that particular musicians talents rather than as a money saving strategy. Milt also was among those very instrumental in the Integration of musicians union local 47 which was quite segregated).
