  • Some of the most notorious and wildest sessions that Phil Spector produced over the years were the infamous rock and roll ones held between October and December 1973 for John Lennon. John and Yoko had recently separated, which led to John going to Hollywood and taking May Pang (at Yoko's behest) as his lover for what has been called John's "Lost Weekend." The reasoning for those sessions began when John got sued by Morris Levy for plagiarizing Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" for his own "Come Together." It was controlled by Levy's publishing. Part of the settlement was John's agreement to record songs owned by Morris Levy's Big Seven publishing on an upcoming album.
Phil Spector had put together The Beatles Let It Be album from hundreds of hours of tapes and worked with John and George on their solo recordings, so it was natural for Phil to produce John's rock and roll collection. From those. with Leon Russell as a pianist are "Angel Baby," "To Know Her Is to Love Her" and an alternate take of "Be My Baby." Leon's ivory dancing stands out on "To Know Her Is to Love Her."

Very interesting music history. Glad to know Leon worked so closely with John. Did I see that Leon also played guitar on the album with the commentary?
