I wish this was in High Def, and Dolly was wearing one of her low cut chest outfits and high hemline outfits, her voice works better for this song than many of her big hits
Dolly has always excelled in performing traditional songs. She has a unique voice that lends the songs a truly timeless quality. She might have been singing 200 years ago, or yesterday. Whenever you hear her doing one of these old spngs, you shiver, not only because she's so good, but because you feel that wind in the holler chilling your bones.
What I love about this song, is that Dolly reminded us that the protagonist in this song "The house of the rising sun" is a woman, and the house she's referring to is a club.
NEW ORLEANS PART 1: DOLLY PARTON My impression of Dolly Parton has changed radically over the years. I used to think that being a strong woman was refusing the typical associations with “woman” in the very basic sense of the word and the gender role in society. I thought that the singer, known for her plastic surgery, fake nails and big shiny blond hair was a cliché, but there is a fine line between an icon and a cliché. The most outstanding difference being that an icon can be made of clichés, but an icon is unique. There is not another Dolly Parton. I really misunderstood her and country music in general for a long time. I coupled country music with my other nemesis: opera. Whereas, over the years, opera still irritates me and I probably still deeply “misunderstand” it, country music has enlightened me to its deep significance as a genre, and I find that actually, as an artist - I am partly a country singer. My influence from folk music creates that link and somehow I never quite saw the connection. Nor did I really start to look more deeply at Dolly Parton when I picked up the nickname “Gothic Dolly Parton” because of a black vintage dress I bought for a gig that had remained admired but unpurchased, as the saleswomen told me it was “waiting for the right owner.” I myself a modern singer/songwriter, with influences from several genres, but a strong sense of identity from 60s stars such as Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Stevie Nicks to name a few of the women…(I’ll leave out the men on this occasion) I realize that Dolly, being one of 12 or so siblings and being from rural life and not overly privilidged upbringings: her father being the owner of a small tobacco farm and her mother being a barer of children, a singer of balad and folkore and obviously an inspiration to Dolly. She gained a sense of her father’s excellent business skills, and her mother’s love of country inspired song, and along with the advice of Johnny Cash who told her to trust her musical instincts, it seems that Dolly has done that and pushed it as far as I believe one woman can in her lifetime. Perhaps one thing I didn’t understand before, was having a musical persona. I understood theatre and acting, and cabaret but when it came to being a performer of folk or country music, I couldn’t understand the need for having big hair and being known for your bust (not that Dolly intended this, or perhaps she did, and not to condemn this either, for I too am a busty lady). But I thought that being a serious performer, it took a level of sincerity. And if you were going to cover a song like The House of the Rising Sun, surely, you’d be more interested in people hearing the music than drinking in your glamour. But that’s where I’m wrong on so many levels. Having a persona is the perfect tool to channel your energy into as a world-wide famous star, whilst not having to reveal which parts are you and which parts are the act, it all blends nicely together in the mould of your mythology. And furthermore, Dolly has always brought RAUNCH into her music. Interestingly, she turned down an offer to pose for Playboy nude, instead posing in bunny costume at some later point. But Dolly doesn’t need to pose nude, because her persona is finely written so that she never has to be anything more than what Dolly Parton is. We know what and who Dolly Parton is, as an entertainer, and people love her. Perhaps she doesn’t have a tragic story that over-spills into her songs, I don’t actually know enough about her biography to comment on it accurately. Instead, I think that she understands the plights of women in a timeless sense. Those who fall by the wayside and those who never know the taste of priviledge. Or those who live in the envious glow of the opposite. Those like “Jolene” that live with the effortless beauty that earns them so much ease to find and perhaps keep a man, or steal a man from another struggling “average” woman. Dolly knows the toils of the working woman, who toils from morning to evening and barely rests enough to have any satisfaction. She knows it well enough to appeal to global audiences on all levels, and continues to be loved by so many. She never was my cup of tea until I felt more worldly wise, more inclining towards my femininity and awareness of this (seemingly) male dominated world (not for long…) I also tapped into “Diva” mentality. It started off as a joke, changing my image from “folk singer” (sort of rustic tomboy with a modern punk/goth tint) to full on big hair, tutorial-inspired makeup including big lashes and boobs more than a subtle hint under my top. It started off as a joke, as I say, but there’s always a hint of truth in a joke. I soon hankered for ballroom style dresses (they will still be a bit punk/goth) and big hair and perfect makeup. And a persona that allowed me to disguise the truth from the fiction and flow freely without persecution. I now like to flow between many images of myself, but I feel that Dolly certainly, in my opinion has her place in this world, and more than ever - in mine. facebook.com/kirstyheggiemusic www.kirstyheggie.com
Interesting societal points and some women can 'own' their objectification and brand it- even though I generally dislike the Kardashians they deserve credit for turning what in many other hands would have been a PR humiliation Linked is a more acapella version of the song with less synth and Dolly's voice does is clearer.
I thonk this makes more sense as a woman's song. A woman working in a brothel in the 19th century would have been miserable indeed. There were no cures for sexually transmitted diseases back then, for one thing, let alone the misery endured by sex workers throughout history. It would have been pretty much impossible to leave that life, except in a hearse.I can see the song's creator being a woman quite easily. (Edited for spelling)
It's a "traditional" folk/blues song that apparently was originally about a fallen woman, but all the most famous versions are by male singers who changed it. When Dolly got a hold of it she changed it back and added a few key lyrics to make it even more obvious it's about a woman.
koalafrog It was famously covered by Joan Baez in 1960, which is what probably brought it to Dylan's attention, and Dylan's version, in turn, is what most likely prompted to the Animals to to record it.
The difference between Carl and the Devil or God (me) I get off on them wanting, I want her to know that others want her because if they didn't she'd liv e in her dungeon and please me full time, then she wouldn't remember how to have regular sex appeal besides her voice alters if all she does is pray. I want all of "it" as far as her entity goes, not just part of it, which is what I meant by not sharing..... oO Lucifer ( listening
I wish this were in high def and dolly were wearing a low cut chest and high leg showing outfit, her voice fits this song better than most her big hits
What is the purpose of changing all the lyrics to this song? It takes the complete context away from the original song and also the new lyrics imply heavily that it's a whorehouse when all evidence is that it was either a casino or female prison...
I love Dolly, but this treatment of tragedy fueled by poverty is camp beyond words and adds nothing to the song. For a version more in keeping with the spirit of the lyric look no further than a 21 year old Bob Dylan on his debut album.

I never heard this sung by Dolly but this version is awesome!
I guess Leadbelly wrote it for Dolly to sing. It was written for her voice, though he didn't know it.
There is a studio version on her album 9 To 5 And Odd Jobs :)
You nailed it to the wall, Dolly. We love you.

I love this song so much and I admire Dolly Parton a lot. Its a sad song
Love this Dolly Parton she so talented
The first time I really paid attention to the lyrics was I heard Dolly sing it. She’s like Johnny Cash - makes you think they lived it.
Dolly and Cash are the GOATs of country and some of the greatest in music in general. No matter the genre.

It was made famous by The Animals though
