I have never heard a truly decent cover of Heroes, because I hold the Bowie version in such high esteem., considering it untouchable. That was until I heard this.
My feeling is anything Fripp does with it is great. RUclips has Fripp with King Crimson and Jacko singing, And there's another one with Fripp at Glastonbury with his wife singing. Those are pretty good versions, too
As an Afghan war veteran myself, that movie wrecked me. When this song played in the credits, I couldn’t stop tears from just falling out of my face. Powerful stuff.
I've heard this a hundred times, and I get chills every time I hear it. Something about this song, and Peter Gabriel's amazing rendition of it, just goes out to the universe every time. We should broadcast this to the stars as the ultimate claim for the every-temporary, ever-aspiring, ever-fallible human condition. heros ..... just for one day.
It's been hard to listen to anyone else covering David Bowie the last few weeks since his death, but this - this reaches into the soul in a totally appropriate way, as only Peter Gabriel can do. Incredible.
+ Nicky Leach I agree and very well stated. For me the best tributes ( since Davids death) have been those who worked with David , such as Rick Wakeman ( on here on RUclips- BBC) playing the piano for 'Life on Mars', it's helped me. And as I wrote Peter captured this song as only he could. " We can be heroes forever and ever..." Peace
+David Brown I certainly hope that David got the chance to hear this incredible orchestral arrangement, as I can imagine he would love it - especially coming from his pal Peter Gabriel. Since my comment, of course his brilliant band did such an incredible tribute at the BRITS, with Lorde. Our hearts remain broken wide open. Such a gift to the world.
Nicky Leach: id like to hear David Bowie’s thoughts on this cause if this song had have been mine I’d have handed the rights straight over to Peter Gabriel for this in version.
Nadia, when has there even been a cover this perfect? I’m not sure there has. Bowie and Gabriel came up at the same time. Both were flamboyant, transcendent rock stars who used costumes and personas to articulate themselves creatively. Both dabbled in New Wave towards the end of the 70s. In short, Peter is the perfect choice to cover a song of this magnitude by one of his most illustrious peers. I’m glad you enjoy it as much as me 😊
I have to absolutely agree with you :D. I do enjoy what David Bowie has written, but his performance and style in the original song just doesn't touch me as much as Gabriel's interpretation. Peter is one of those artists who can really call himself that, an artist by heart. His skillset is quite rare these days... No disrespect to any Bowie fan, though. The man was great, no doubt about it.
Marcus Norgen, you are so so right. He performed this in Berlin when the Wall came down; my mom was a Berliner and her family holocaust victims. I just sobbed; it was such a brilliant experience.
The original Bowie version of this is my favourite song of all time so much so I want it played at my funeral, but I am absolutely blown away by this version.
it makes you cry because your ego wants to be known that you can be a Hereo even if it's just for one day as most Heroes are not called Heroes because they lived but because they took the ultimate sacrifices so that another soul could live longer. Knowing how much mental and physical boundaries that have to be broken to help an other soul thrive in that moment is breath taking.
This is seriously the best cover of Heroes ever. I think David would be proud. I wonder how special the people in the crowd felt this performance was? It had to have been goosebumps all over. The orchestra is just perfect and when Peter steps on stage it is just a vibe that is utterly palpable. He's so cool and just belts these perfect bittersweet notes. When he says the line "the shame was on the other side..." it goes straight to my heart every time. Its like he unlocks some kind of shared vision of all the people, the freedom fighters, those on the margins, the rebels, and the forgotten that had to give themselves up or die fighting just so we can try to live in a sane and free world. Its so utterly sad to think about, but there is also a sort of triumph in remembering all of the terrible tragedies we've wrought upon ourselves as a lesson to be better to one another. Just absolutely amazing.
This arrangement was perfect for Stranger Things 1. It really hit home. This version is amazing, right along with David Bowie's original. Two brilliant versions by two brilliant singer composers.
I saw this live (not this venue, but in Massachusetts) and I get goosebumps every single time I hear it now. I had wanted to see Peter Gabriel live for so many years and this was the first time. When the wave of sound hit me I started to cry. So beautiful, so moving. And, as a cellist, I loved being able to see him with a symphony orchestra, it was perfect.
I saw this live at the O2 London. I was absolutely blown away. This song actually brought tears to mine and my wife’s eyes. Even now it makes me feel emotional when I hear this. Peter Gabriel..... Legend
Good lord-at 2:40, I closed my eyes and got goose bumps listening to this. The orchestra and the synchronistic sounds coming from the string section is something to marvel at. Not really a David Bowie fan, but Peter Gabriel knocked this one out of the park. DAM!!!!!
On Dec 13th I buried my mother. 6 weeks prior I buried my brother Michael. This song, the live version, I chose to celebrate their lives on video. People kept asking me how do you feel and are you ok. This song is how I felt. I wanted to show my heart and how I'll forever carry them in it. Thanks David n Peter.

this is one of those that seems to fade into and out of my life during the most emotional up and down moments seemingly perfect. if this doesn't move you to the point of true emotion I'm not sure what will?? When I hear this rendition it makes me feel like I need to truly seize the day and live as much in the moment as possible. You know that feeling of aliveness you get being in the same room as a celebritiy you like? this is that feeling magnified. being alive and realizing how lucky you are just to be here is a special feeling if you feel it "enough" be a hero and do something nice for someone today...

Lone Survivor! One of the greatest stories I've ever read. Glad they put this epic song at the end of the film. I thought the movie could've been a lot better but the ending with this song playing made me tear up. Well done, Mr. Gabriel!
From GENESIS to SOLO, Gabriel never stops growing as a musician. Whether using native sounds from other countries or symphonic music with an orchestra backing, Gabriel never likes being boxed into a mold. Gabriel is, well, Gabriel.

Well, she lost in 2018, but went down swinging. She only stopped when I came from the doctor and told her that we have to say goodbye. Only then she was able to let go. I miss her so much. She was 43 when she had to go.
My wife had cancer too. Thankfully she had her 5 year anniversary. I'm so sorry for you. I'm glad that you can take some comfort in music. I'm sure she is with you always in spirit until you meet again.
She's a hero. And you are one too. I'm sorry for your loss but your wife is still here with all of us. Thank you for sharing your story and I wish nothing but the best for you in this life.

One afternoon in July 1977, David Bowie was looking out of the window of Hansa Studio in Berlin when he noticed a couple kissing near the Berlin Wall. “I always said it was a couple of lovers by the Wall that prompted the idea for Heroes,” Bowie told Classic Rock in 2015. “Actually, it was [Bowie producer] Tony Visconti and his girlfriend. Tony was married at the time, so I couldn’t talk about it. But I can now say that the lovers were Tony and a German girl [Antonia Maass] that he’d met while we were in Berlin. I think possibly his marriage was in the last few months. And it was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song.”
This is not just a cover song this is so much more the delivery of the vocals and the string arrangements hit me deep in my soul and this interpretation it’s so beautiful to me
It was my dream to be a Navy SEAL, it didn't work out. A couple years later my wife of 10 years left me. All I ever wanted to do was make her and our three children proud. This song is a reminder, of my failure in an endeavor to accomplish something great, and my failure to be the husband that my ex had desired, but it's also a reminder of my triumph as a single father and the incredible growth and development I've experienced in the last year and a half.
Great comment, I hope your growth and development went on in the years past. I’ve been in cimilar circumstances (single father), and experienced the same. My kids are 17 and 20 now, 3 and 6 When we devorced. I brought me So much closer to myself and my kids. My bond with them is really close. I think we just did well, Henry. I can honoustly say that I am proud about myself. I hope you can too.
Somehow Peter Gabriel's voice goes directly to that part of the brain which controls emotions and unlocks all of them.
Awesome Jake mate
So true. It’s like his voice box has a built-in second very dominant harmonic going on. And the quick flights of falsetto are so stirring. Awesome.
Nicely put - completely get it.
True
I think he is a Buddha. Bowie was, too.
The orchestral arrangement is phenomenal.
It really is. I assume that is Gabriel himself, amazing.

This is epic. I don't know how Peter didn't lose it emotionally while singing.
No words to this film sends chills down my spine. Top Troops brave brave men ❤
It takes a real artist to take a great song and make it better.
You should be glad it didn't work out : Talking about Heroes ruclips.net/video/xszvdy_Egjo/видео.html
Don't need to be a SEAL to be a hero, mate. Just always be there for your kids and that's enough, trust me. That's enough.
Hero’s are made not born. You qualified and made the cut. Congratulations
It sounds to me that you, have succeeded, and truly become a hero.
Visually stunning. Musically perfection. Spiritually moving. Emotionally touching. Thank you, Peter. All class and I'm sure David was proud.
I am humbled by your public appreciation for my work. Kindly message me now on
