Lyrics
When my love said to me
Meet me down by the gallow tree
For it's sad news I bring
About this old town and all that it's offering
Some say troubles abound
Some day soon they're gonna pull the old town down
One day we'll return here,
When the Belfast child sings again
(Sinead O'Connor)
I dreamed last night
That my own love came in
He came in so sweetly
His feet made no din
He crept up beside me
And this he did say:
It will not be long, love,
'Til our wedding day
Some come back Billy, won't you come on home
Come back Mary, you've been away so long
The streets are empty, and your mother's gone
The girls are crying, it's been oh so long
And your father's calling, come on home
Come on home, come on home
Come back people, you've been gone a while
And the war is raging, in the emerald isle
That's flesh and blood man, that's flesh and blood
All the girls are crying but all's not lost
The streets are empty, the streets are cold
Won't you come on home, won't you come on home
The streets are empty
Life goes on, Life goes on
One day we'll return here
When the Belfast child sings again
When the Belfast child sings again

This performance of Sinead O’Connor’s with Simple Minds makes my hair stand on end. RIP Sinead fly high and sing with the angels 💔🙏🏻
😪🙏❤️
Yes it does, me too
Very well said. Absolute perfection.
❤😢 Brilliant Sinead from a Fellow Irish person love you ❤😢
Zašto nekužite e djeco moja😢
I cannot believe how much modern music has fallen down, incredibly down. Please, compare this song (an irish traditional song, wonderfully arranged by Simple Minds) with any other of today. This is the same with movies, arts and everything else!! We're going to the abyss....
Could be my words
Roberto Graziano 100% right
Hi from Italy
Roberto Graziano hi from U.K. Did you ever watch the Video of Simple Minds live in Verona
@Anony Mouse many thanks for the article. I was really surprised at the following two possible explanations of the issue:
1) ...rise of lower-skill service jobs has made work less intellectually demanding...;
2) ... global warming...
OK... the first hypothesis is sound indeed but the second one is simply ridiculous! However, my idea is that the article authors are jerking readers around in that they miss to mention the "real" reason why people are becoming monkeys: digital dementia!! The web, computer and smartphone abuse is driving us fool and low-QI (and humanity) equipped slaves.
The quite interesting books by Manfred Spitzer (e.g.: Digital Dementia) and Michel Desmurget (among others) provide much scientific insight on that.
Our brain is decreasing in performances and our heart is frozing. And this is not a case! The élites are forcing this crazy "evolution" dramatically for self evident reasons. But people do non get the web, smart phones and so on enough. This is totally crazy and made the Huxley's "Brave New World" come true!!
Cheers from Italy
Its 2 days after my mums funeral this was her favourite song she sat and repayed it over and over before her passing sharing it on her fb in the lead up to going to hospital as at that point is all she spent time doing was listening to this she was numb to alot of things even her state of health we played this at her funeral i hated it was nervously laughing at the song but then relized it was a beautiful song beautiful atmosphere to hear it for a beautiful woman the doors were open in the Chapel sun shining threw the doors what a beautiful day it was because of all this I knew she would be free from everything and felt some of her spirit leave the room to this song in a happy manner the rest of her spirit went to me and my sister on her last breaths I strongly believe and feel that so may you rest in eternal peice justine Lee Wilson born Edinburgh 1971 lived a happy life with her children and grandchildren reece abby caden and rhea and my partner chantelle died the 12th of April 2024 at 23.43 pm at Edinburgh Royal infirmary acu 1 to bay 5 room 4 or Bay 4 room 5 her we got her to Thomas marrin directors where we met donald barrie who was a utter gentleman who showed the most compassion fir us and our mother and then the following days coming met Jackie mckinney who was a sweetheart who showed the same passion for us in the kindest of ways spoke about my mums life with us for the funeral then on the day it was hosted at warreston cemetery where she got her beautiful service 17 may 2024 ❤
It’s a very sad song, but legendary. Gosh… what a band.!!!! The 80s, wouldn’t be the 80s without The Simple Minds.
I’m meeting Jim next year ,backstage (along with another 100 or so)
Man, i agree with you 100%. Maybe U2 and Marillion belong to the 1980's soundtrack, too....!?
@@BobBob-uv9fq I hope you do
Absolutely 👍👍
The sadness is turning into hope... Can't you feel IT?
Rip Sinead.
This solo sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.
Great performance jim.seen them life in Dublin at the race course 1987 and thay still have it.
😮😊
Realmente! dá arrepios.
What a loss
😢😢😢
I hope her troubled soul is now at peace.
Rest in Peace dear Sinead
Simple Minds were iconic. One of the best bands of the 80's. Loved their music.
Still are. Saw them in Glasgow 4 days ago and they performed this for the first time in years. Brought the house down.
Saw them in Verona this year pure class ❤
still are
Still Iconic; they're still making quality records,
and compared to U2 who are more popularized here
in the US, they've been far more active & consistent
than their Irish neighbors; and though I like
LARRY MULLEN as a drummer, MEL GAYNOR
is more "polished & slick", along w/ the rest
of the group with or w/ o DEREK FORBES
& MICHAEL MAC NEIL; This is CS from the US
saying Hard to Find anyone better than Simple Minds
😊
This song is one of the powerful songs ever recorded. A Scottish Band from Glasgow, ( Simple Minds),, would be the next best outside of an Irish band to sing about the ""troubles". in Northern Ireland. I am Scots on Dads side and Irish Catholic on Mum's . The joint and mixed history has brought with it a mixture of bitterness , but also wonderful music and shared love of very common cultures. Jim Kerr, you are a brilliant.
Dear Jesus! That solo from Sinead breaks my heart..God bless you, child.
This is amazing. The late, great singer, Sinead O’Conner with Simple Minds. RIP Sinead! GBNF 😭🙏
For me, Simple Minds are on another level. Today the music is very far to this talented group. Simple Minds are pure talent!
No words will ever be able to describe the emotions this song makes you feel deep inside your heart.
i think this is the best performance of this song that i have seen, especially with the orchestra and the guitar at the end.
My sincere condolences to family of Sinead. Beautiful voice like a clarion in the sky. Go on angel. Thank you Simple Minds of reminding of me of teenage years. Not far off from Sinead’s by one but this is my Irish.
This is proper music. I love you all. RIP Sinead, beautiful angel.
Every time when I hear this song, tears in my eyes.
Same here, this song is magnificent, out of this world!
And me, it's just brilliant!
😭😭😭
Eire and Ulster unity....
If that happens Rense Boersma, no dout that the song is a masterpiece.
This is not a song. This is my church. From the son of a Lebanese solider who lost family due to the 25yr civil war, l pray The Troubles, never return to NI. God bless those fallen souls.
Si Dieu existait il aurait épargné ce beau pays et ces gens si chaleureux.
Youre not alone. Please dont believe the media. We, the people, will always fight together x
the most beautiful piece, dear to my heart....thanks to Charlie for his guitar solo
Now tell me why Simple Minds isn’t in the Hall of Fame. It’s a crime.
A very good point. Far too many artists have been inducted with far less credibility.
Becsuse of Sinead
This is probably based on how big in America à band is..
@@albertoostinelli8946 Yes. I think that may have a great deal to do with it!
Cause they ain’t that good
Beautiful song !
Well done Sinéad O'Connor ,Simple Minds & Symphony Orchestra.

“Belfast Child is one of my favourite songs by Simple Minds “
Most favourite
Very emotional, heavy lyrics. despite not even been Irish I have chicken skin each time I listen this song
I've loved simple minds for over 35 years, but just stumbled across this video for the first time. Oh wow, what can you say , amazing
It needs to be remedied..they were and are spectacular
This is a song for everyone but if you’re Irish, from my own heart, you feel it that much more. Amazing ❤
English./Irish Mate .... I feel it too, totally conflicted.... 😞
You know it and feel it if your northern Irish.
Gives me goosebumps every time 😪
Absolute masterpiece. It doesn't get any better than this. Divine.
The album version is even better IMHO (because more complete: they had to make some cuts here) - but this is beautiful, yes, and the idea of having Sinéad sing a verse from the Irish folk ballad the melody originates from is really nice.
@@louise_rose They are both superb. Sinead was a very sick woman with one of the greatest voices ever.
@@shtroizn Sinead had a lotta heart, that's what made her singing so great.
@@floryboonda Lotta heart and very troubled mind and soul. Good combination for artistry poor woman.
Charlie is such a brilliant guitarist. This version gives me goosebumps. I wish I had been there.
Definitely underrated imo.
CHARLIE BURCHILL, like his bandmates are the most
under - rated & under - valued Guitarist / Supergroup
in Music History arguably, and particularly in
America, where U2 is idolized and S. Minds,
to many, are known for "Don't You Forget About Me",
and "Alive & Kicking", and nothing else:
That un- awareness of a tremendously innovative
band Was, and Still to this day is partially if not
"fully" caused by Radio: When U2 began to use
keyboards/ synths, a weapon amongst many
in S, Minds used, well before their Irish neighbors,
U2 got all the credit. THE EDGE is good, no diubt
but Charlie's range, varying tones, and ability to
rip "Edge like" riffs in a Burchill style is where
he scores BONUS points;
This is CS from the US saying
CHARLIE BURCHILL, you're
Simply "Mind- Blowing" Special...
And RIP, Stunning SINEAD,
Queen of Ireland
no doubts about it. One of their best songs, and just awesome when done live...LOVE IT..
New 2022 greetings from Kazakhstan to all Simple Minds fans. A brilliant song, outstanding performance of all musicians. Great to people who witnessed this concert.
Oh I love this. I love Simple Minds and I love Sinead O'Connor. RIP Sinead O'Connor. God bless you in Heaven 🙏 Doesn't she sound so Beautiful. You will be missed always and always remembered Sinead O'Connor. Be at Peace with Jesus. ❤️
His voice is as magnificent as it's always been
God if we could only bring back the famous amazing wonderful music of the 70 + the 80 Music because there is no music nowadays only my Rod Stewart ❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻⭐️⭐️🍀
One of my favorite songs. I love the end with drums and guitar.
What a performance from everyone. Best band to come out of Scotland period! From an English man 👌
Omg, Sineads voice gave me goosebumps, so eerily beautiful.
She is one of a kind , the most amazing voice for sure
Her voice has always done that to me. I agree, eerily beautiful. Such a sad ending to her time with us.
Make my hair stand up bless him
Sinead, you have lived a different life but true to your roots - I have read some articles - stay the course my friend and be known you have fans who still love you - keep doing this for you and us
Rest in Peace Sinead i was 10 years old first time i heard Nothing Compares to you my parents was just divorced and i found peace in your song i had it on Repeat for 2 months and i think it Helped me not to go Insane so Thank you Sinnead May your Soul find Peace and thanks for the Music

Thank you, from Ireland and the Irish people. God bless you xx
Simple Minds who did this song are Scottish but they and us Irish are fellow brethren xx
@@padmac8176 thank you my friend! And god bless you and your family and my friends from Ireland 🇮🇪 🙏 ❤
Simple Minds connect the Dots no matter
what Place, Race, or Country you live in
this is CS from the US that knows how
under- rated and overshadowed by U2
here in America,this incredibly innovative
and Funky this band is, w/ the ability
to shift gears and emote in medium
to slow tempo in a highly slick &
polished manner: They've never
released a "bad" record beyond
the "early" early period of their career
Best group many Americans
know little or nothing about...
May JIM KERR & his bandmates
be blessed to add to their
"Living Legends" resumes.
Sinead was the icing on what was an incredible performance by a stunning band. Thankyou for making this beautiful classic song 🎵
Life-long Simple Minds fan here. Also always loved the original ballad, She Moved Through The Fair, Cara Dillon version. And Sinead O' Connor had a breath-taking voice... all dovetail here for a magical, wonderful performance.
I'm a lifelong fan too. I've been so lucky to see Simple Minds in Cardiff. What a night to remember. Absolutely brilliant.
my two sons have been in Belfast and this song has been with them after returning home here to us in Australia.
Before sixteen months i lost my best girlfriend. I had met her before 20 years. I was on a walk with my wife as singles. We heard her singing in a square, she was a street artist. I was amazed from her voice. We waited there until she took a break. Then we started talking about music.
I remember her as a free spirit. She could start singing no matter if the washing machine was on, or bikes making noise with the exausts, if soneone was raising his voice at the apartment next. She was "sinking" in the music.
We gone to the place with my wife few times so we started a very nice friendship. We used to gather at homes and our best game was the "ping pong song". Telling the title we tried to find the artist or the band. So one day i told her this song. She didn't knew it but after a few days she found it and told me that she loved it and would sing it in every appearence she would make.
The years past and suddenly she get sick from cancer. The last time i show her at the hospital we put in on and crossed our hands closing our eyes, feeling endless respect and love to each other. When i stood up to go she told me "i love you as much as this song". I felt great honor by her words and said to her "the streets are empty until the Belfast child sings again".
That was the last words we said to each other and the last time we saw each other. Rita i miss you but i m sure there is no pain where you are now.
Damn son I hope you find peace.
Wow!! I was very touched to read what you wrote. Im very sorry to hear of your wife's passing but I can only imagine how magical it was for you two to join hands together to this song before she died. God bless you brother and your wife in the afterlife!🙏🙏🙏🙏😘👍
@@padmac8176 thank you very much for your beautifull words. My wife is still alive. Rita was one of my closest friends and i wont forget her for the rest of my life.
This is now History.
Sinead O'Connor is as powerful as powerful can be, and emotional, she is Irish, she wants to hear the Belfast Child sings again. Genuinely. From her heart.
This interpretation is incredible, and absolutely unique. And we all want to hear the Belfast Child sings again.
See....this is music.....haunting story telling.....iconic powerful vocals.....bet the hairs on your arms and neck are standing up!
best music comes from that beautiful island. i will get there one day...

Sinnead O'Connor fabulous and Jim Kerr owned that stage fabulous performance of an absolute classic song ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Magnifique, il love
Brilliant scene-stealing performance by Sinead, but for me Jim Kerr's voice in the 2nd half was a force of nature.
You could sense a feeling in his voice at the start, that this is going to be special & I really don't want to mess this up.
Best male voice ever to be honest.
Tingling all over when Sinead started to sing
God rest her soul x
Âmen !
A fabulous track by Simple Minds, but Sinead oh my... one of the greatest female vocalists of all time, simply stellar!

i agree, Simple Minds has matured into the music of their kinship - a great tribute also with Sinead who has proudly staged her Irish roots which we of Irish decent value
what a great song with an outstanding Sinèad O'Connor. the song of my youth reminds me of my roots from which I descended. I love Simple Minds and Sinèad O'Connor and everyone on the Emerald Isle.
Yes, the emerald isle.... Gary Moore got born there too. You can hear that on "wild frontier"
That track from an inder- rated album btw, always lent itself
to have SINEAD and / or BONO guest vocal, and she
sounds fantastic; A voice that's echoing in the wind
here across the Atlantic as I type
and say, this is CS from the US;
Hail Simple Minds, and
RIP Stunning SINEAD,

I've got English, Irish, and Scottish blood running through my veins. Tears everytime. Tears of sorrow, tears of rage.

Simple minds doesn't know how to write a bad song. All are perfect. Greg.
Timless.
I feel this is one of those performances where the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. Jim Kerr and Sinead both feel the song and they express it through their voices. Jim Kerrs slow and deliberate movements are in tune with the tempo and the gravity of the song I feel. The same goes for the guitar of Charlie Burchill. All in all a cohesive force rarely attained.
this is really excellent song.
One of the best songs ever 👍🙋🏻♂️
Just beautiful! ❤️
