50 years ago, Thimmappa and his wife set up three tables in a rented outhouse in Udupi that they called home, to earn a livelihood by serving a simple meal of fish fry, curry and rice. Over the years, the fish fry, slathered in a secret masala made by the couple, and their sons thereafter, gained favour with locals who would flock to this home that carried no name. Five years ago, his son, Sathish Kotian finally put up a nameboard as a tribute to his late father’s culinary legacy that has endured decades since the eatery’s modest beginnings. In this episode, I visit Hotel Thimmappa Fish Meals to chat with Kotian and also taste some of the seafood delicacies here. Hope you enjoy this one. Take care and stay safe.
Fish Meal
The fish meal is a simple affair here, there’s rice, a tasty curry made with small-sized, inexpensive fish, a vegetable for the day and some pickle. And to complete this, one picks from the selection of fish fry (charged extra) proffered by attendants who scurry between the tables and the kitchen. Whether one has a budget of under Rs. 100 or 300, one is assured of a satisfying fish meal at Thimmappa.

Kane Rava Fry
This was a plump lady fish, the semolina forming the perfect crunchy crumb over a veil of perfectly spiced masala encasing the flakey delicate flesh of the fish. One of the best kane rava fry preparations that I have tasted.

Mysore Pak, the only popular sweet of South India took birth in Mysore but some of the best you will get in TN. Udupi has shown the way that quality is to others.

Whenever we go to Mangalore, I make sure that we visit Hotel Timappa for delicious fish meal. Fish is absolutely fresh and simple accompaniments is simply delicious and yummy.

Visited the Hotel last week it was an absolute delight based on your video visited there took fish meals it was absolutely heaven!! Fish curry didnt felt like regular fish curry it was absolutely great and took Anjal fry the best fish fry i ever had, took chicken ghee roast it was ok, so over all it was a very good experience...a must visit if you go to Udupi...thanks to you sir..

I’ve been to this iconic place twice! The prawns ghee roast, and the prawns rawa fry is the BEST I’ve had in my life! The owner is also extremely courteous and personally serves the fish items. Highly recommended!

Very hygienic place and fish thava fries are really good. By chance I had the meals at the same place last week when I had been for a trip. Prices are very cheap compared to Bangalore . Most of the fish fries are priced 50-70rs.

the moment you here the word Udupi you feel hungry. fish meal hotel or the meen oota hotel are a joy to visit. sometimes we would deliberately miss our lunch boxes at home so that we could go to a udupi hotel or a meen oota hotel during school lunch break at Karwar. its a joy watching you visit such places Kripal ji.
I don't like fish even through my roots are from Kerala but you have showcased spicy fishes in such a way that even I like to eat. Your channel is so lively no needed any words to speak out only your video speaks everything !!!
Believe it or not , I use to travel 78km just to have lunch here every Saturday. Amazing fish meal, and owner recognises me and gives my favourite fish before i Ask for , Pomfret , king fish and kane tawa fry.

I'm a regular visitor to this place when I'm staying in Udupi.I used to travel to malpe road from manipal only to have Lunch at this place.The way he treats the customers is really blows your heart. He had so much patience that he himself serve the customers and he patiently explain you about the variety of fish that he had in that crowd also.The way they cook the fish won't make you feel bore even if you eat regularly.
