"that could not be read by MOST telepaths" I like to think that there was some rare and secluded species of telepaths that could read the minds of a Ferengi, and a particularly adventurous Ferengi would team up with one to secure significant profit.
While I love Quark and all of his family, the most interesting Ferengi I ever saw was that one Ferengi assassin, Leck. He's still as scummy as any other Ferengi, but his business killing people. I also wish they'd make another series set after DS9.

The only new policy of the Ferengi I like was the women acquiring profit clause. Everything else literally feels like a betrayal to the race's cutthroat policies, while the women acquiring profit felt like a no brainer to the money loving trolls. I never understood why they would want to cut at least 50% of their profit, emphasis on the at least part, all because of "muh women property". Women are just as able to exploit as well as be exploited and cutting them off from trade seems to be a highly economically flawed idea, essentially cutting the male's own profits.
IDK, allowing the Ferengi women to wear clothes seems like a decent idea, also... But yeah, the preventing of women from earning profit did seem pretty off for them.
Irishcrossing I think it’s because the writers wanted to give the Ferengi a true bad side. If they allowed women to acquire profit from the start there would be no reason to hate them. They didn’t want the Ferengi to be overpowered.
@@QuarkGamingLLC I think having "true" bad sides would kind of defeat the point of the entire franchise as it is about diplomacy and finding alternative ways to combat your opponent other than militarily. In any case, there still stands to reason one could hate a Ferengi as they are money grubbing goblin people. Ferengi adding more laborers into the economic mix wouldn't entire make them overpowered in any other sense other than economically, which I think actually is already in check due to the fact one would sell their own mother and father for Latinum. Essentially being penny pinchers and backstabbers, with a religion that reinforces that, already keeps them in check, the fanatic misogyny seem overkill.
In the ferengi alliance, ferengi tend to be effective at advocating for their own benefit. Amazon doesn't want their employees being effective advocates for themselves

One issue: Bok didn't initiate First Contact with the Federation. That was DaiMon Tarr, whose ship was disabled (along with the Enterprise) by the Tkon outpost in "The Last Outpost". Bok and his revenge plan was four episodes later in "The Battle".
The story of Ishka (name isn't on screen as I write this so soryr if I mispelled) reminds me of the history of Wu Zetian of China who built the Daoming Palace. She became empress somewhat by default because her husband was too old and ill to continue ruling publicly, so she would be his voice to the people and people under him, however she started quickly making her own plans. Can't recite the story properly off by heart, but if you're interested, definitely look into Wu Zetian, quite an inspiring and actually quite romantic story if you set aside your modern day morals.

He wasn't an idiot. He was a foil for the entirety of Ferengi society. His talents - fixing things, listening to people, a desire to learn about people with different backgrounds - weren't valued at all by Ferengi society, despite being obviously incredibly valuable in any sanely constructed society. There's a reason he was the one to found a workers' union on DS9: He was a representation of the struggles of workers everywhere. His talents ignored by a society focused on maximizing profit for the few at the cost of everything else, his enormous importance to the functioning of everything around him (Quark's remained functional entirely because he kept fixing things) invisible to the people with all the power until he decided to withhold his labor to make that point, his intelligence instead called stupidity due to it running along lines not conducive to the role he was supposed to play in society, he endured it all until he was able to make his move and actually start fixing society instead of just Quark's holosuites. He was written this way deliberately. You were supposed to dismiss him just like everyone else did, until it was made clear that this had been foolish from the start.
Official first contact did come in 2364, but it was when the Enterprise-D chased a Ferengi ship to Delphi Ardu IV for stealing a T-9 energy converter from Gamma Tauri IV. Both vessels encountered the last Portal of the Tkon Empire, who held both ships powerless, until the Enterprise away team, under Cmdr. Riker, showed the Portal that the humans were, indeed, evolved beings. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
They always felt comical in like a stereotypical way. Like somewhere there are real ferengi and TNG is wildly offensive for their portrayal. They are played so awfully uniformly that compared to the rest of the world are like parodies
Villamor78 I get that it’s just the world of Star Trek is really earnest and to have characters that aren’t reflective of they world and aren’t well rounded feels uncanny.
I like how they progressed the Ferengi. Armin played Quark perfectly. As did so many other people in the DS9 cast. They put forth so much effort and came out with a terrific show.
Pretty sad when a fictional species has a better society than we do. Also Rom is a big sweetie of a doofus. He always acted stupid, but he wasn't. That lobed love is super smart.
The one good thing about the terrible Below Decks show is that it shows that Quark was able to become incredibly wealthy and turn his bar into a franchise, since he was my favorite character from DS9 that put a smile on my face
Well, there was that episode where Quark was trapped on that planet with Odo and he was looking for beetles but I guess that was a survival situation. But they will eat bugs from other worlds anyway. If they have to.
I know I am late to the video, but this is interesting. Love, sex, determination, death, responsibilities, and social responsibility among others. So relatable. I never knew their history was a planetary soap opera. "dont talk about another's mother!" I see why it got over 100k views and so many likes. one of your best videos yet. I respect the old lady. She put that thing on his hip till he gave up, usually the reverse...lol
One of the most amazing things about Elite:Dangerous is that for the first time in human history, a large number of human beings can accurately conceptualize about things in a galactic scale. These distances are understood. 60LY is nothing. This map is way off. A quadrant being 25k LY across supposedly. That is pretty big. If Ferenginar is only 60LY from Bajor and this map is to scale then the entire star trek universe here is much smaller than even the size of the bubble. Things need to be scaled up in Star Trek lore. Speeds and distances are all off.
I didn't realize there were Vancouver Canucks fans amongst the Ferengi...referring to the individual on the left (Grand Negus Zek) sporting the "Flying V" jersey.
This was a well rounded video but you forgot one key element - The episode "prophet motive" changes grand nexus zek into a formative state by the prophets where ferengi people were as peaceful as the bejorans. This was before the wealth overtook the planet. If you had mentioned this regression to the ancient ferengi way of thinking before the rules of acquisition it would have been a perfect informative video.
@@kullingen6909 You pay taxes for the betterment of the the community, State, Nation, NOT the individual...make your own WAY...so you can ACTUALLY pay those taxes and contribute to society , I'm not paying for losers who contribute zero who'd like nothing more but to suck at the gov tit for a few laps of sustenance on my dime...If that's the case then everybody would be you, and if it's not...then reach into YOUR pockets and help those poor victims you pine for, have it.
how is the ferengi alliance 60,000 light years away from the bajoran wormhole, but the wormhole transports you 70,000 light years to the gamma quadrant?
I love how they don't even need to worry about who declares war or who declares peace. Nobody would be dumb enough to fight them. He who fights the ferengi will end up penniless before the day is out. The treatment of profit and females in the culture is very reminiscent of a certain religion's....
Continuity alert: In ST:TNG, the Ferengi were called that by a starship crew from Earth - "Fereng" is a mild pejorative in South Asian languages for people of European stock, derived from the word "Frankish", much as Americans are called "Yankees" (as explained by Cmdr. Riker). In ST:TNG, "Ferengi" is NOT a word in the Ferengi language.
I remember hating the ferengi when I was a kid... they were so cruel and ugly to me. Especially in the beginning seasons of deep space nine. But, as I'm sure you can expect... the more you get to know them and understand them, the values that they value, they really do start to grow on you.
Firangi in hindi means a different colour... Usually used to refer a white/black foreigner in India. I think it fits here since ferengi are of different colour compared to humans (usually portrayed by Americans).
Great video dude, but wasn’t official first contact with daimon tarr or something in that episode with the tkon empire and those weird blue energy whips
@@UncleHaul If you want to get "Technical" about when humans first met a Ferengi, it was most likely in Roswell New Mexico. lol (Note: Not official first contact) Or when the NX-01 made contact. (Note: Also not official first contact.)
Rule 113: "Always have sex with the boss" Now consider the fact that the Rules of Acquisition are considered to be close to religious texts to Ferenghi business men. Now also consider that, when this rule was written, _all_ Ferenghi business men were _men._
I like how this just turned Quark into a copycat businessman instead of a Pioneer. He could have made billions in Latium had he realized that the galactic society was changing. He could have revolutionized the economic system in Kronos, he could have been at the forefront of Bajor but no...he was too busy looking at the quick gains....playing with the underworld in hopes of a big score. When he had governments at his fingertips.
I don’t know why people think the ferengi’s would win in any war just because they had money... they didn’t fight they would sell to who they thought was the winning side atleast or sell to whoever would pay the most which in turn would be their demise
They are small enough not to be a threat. They are neutral... They may be a beneficial link to sides at war. I don't know how their money work. Someone else can just make up and print money and conquer ferengi with it.
I have a thought. What if the Ferengi were to engage in a civil war? It would be the first war of the Ferengi we know. This story would be called, "the Ferengi Divide, " Brunt takes power and leads a coup against Rom. Rom is banished from Ferenginar. Brunt is a traditionalist, and makes the Ferengi Alliance an authoritarian corporation. The Colony of "New Ferenginar" in the Balancar System would suffer the most because the people are being oppressed. The Colonists form and fight back because a rebellion. Called the "New Ferenginar Seperatist Union". Led by a brave, polite, well mannered, and courageous person named Lazar. New Ferenginar gains independence. New Ferenginar is a democracy. It bears the name " Commonwealth of New Ferenginar" or CNF for short. A year goes by, the Ferengi Alliance and the CNF arm for war. No one thinks it will happen, but it does. The conflict is called "The Ferengi Divide" The CNF wins, and everything goes back to normal. I am sorry if my idea is crazy, and you have objections. But the way I see it, there are some indications within the Star Trek Universe that indicate that the "Ferengi are just as tough as anyone in the Galaxy" quoted by Quark "Magnificent Ferengi". And you know what, I think it's time for the Ferengi to have some change a little bit. Besides, we all the know the Ferengi. They're greedy, selfish, and untrustworthy little trolls. But what about the Ferengi who are freedom fighters, brave, unselfish, truthful, and honorable? I think the Ferengi Divide would be a great story for Star Trek. The characters that inspire this story: Grand Nagus Zek. Ishka, mother of quark and Rom. Nog, the Starfleet Ferengi. Rom, who everyone underestimates. Again, I am sorry if anyone finds my idea crazy. I am just expressing myself. Please do not hold it against me.

Ferengi are the best!!
You Videos are awesome
You're welcome! :)
4:57 Rule 31: Thou shalt not make Your Momma Jokes.
*NOOOOOOOOOOO!*
I never even watched Star Trek, but I watched the video for your amazing voice
:)
BTW, I would love if you started making vids on Warhammer fantasy or 40k, are you planning to?
Official first contact did come in 2364, but it was when the Enterprise-D chased a Ferengi ship to Delphi Ardu IV for stealing a T-9 energy converter from Gamma Tauri IV. Both vessels encountered the last Portal of the Tkon Empire, who held both ships powerless, until the Enterprise away team, under Cmdr. Riker, showed the Portal that the humans were, indeed, evolved beings. (TNG: "The Last Outpost")
It's good to see the Ferengi and Federation working together!
The full rule 31 is actually “never make fun of a Ferengi’s mother, instead make fun of something he cares about”
LOL. I love the insane concept of Ferengi. Perfect comedy relief in TNG (later seasons) and DS9.
They always felt comical in like a stereotypical way. Like somewhere there are real ferengi and TNG is wildly offensive for their portrayal. They are played so awfully uniformly that compared to the rest of the world are like parodies
@@Caveboy0 Satire
Villamor78 I get that it’s just the world of Star Trek is really earnest and to have characters that aren’t reflective of they world and aren’t well rounded feels uncanny.
@@Caveboy0 They are an exaggeration of greed.
How weird i just finished watching ds9 yesterday !
MrJamesnight - what’d you think? I consider it the best series of Star Trek as it got so much deeper than any other series...
Would love to see how the Alliance changed after the events of the end of DS9.
It being fictional obviously makes it much easier to just conveniently work
How is it better if it's subjugating half the population?
i hope u dont mean that the Ferwngi have a better society than us, that seems far-fetched lol
Those "20th century humans" were definitely Imperial Officers from Star Wars. 6:25
Incomplete rule at 4:56
Rule 31: Never make fun of a Ferengi's mother, insult something that matters to him.
Rom: "Moogi!"
In the episode "The Siege", Quark quotes it, to Bashir, the way it's written here. The second part was, apparently, retconned in later.
Do a video on the federation
Never forget rule of acquisition #17. A contract is a contract is a contract, but only between Ferengi.
Now rule #214, I need to eat.
Favorite species hands down
Great story telling thank you
I didn't realize there were Vancouver Canucks fans amongst the Ferengi...referring to the individual on the left (Grand Negus Zek) sporting the "Flying V" jersey.
The only reason I subbed to your channel was star trek, thanks for the new upload :D
I wouldn't consider "increasing taxes" to be "kind and gentle", but ok
How else is the government going to pay for all the stuff they give us?
Those who think it is are those who don't work
@@kullingen6909 Maybe??? don't depend on the Gov., make your own way...how that be?
@@DrRiddlez2015 like the way you are dependent on rods, schools and hospitals and pay a lot for insurance.
There are some hilarious rules in that book of you pause to read them
how is the ferengi alliance 60,000 light years away from the bajoran wormhole, but the wormhole transports you 70,000 light years to the gamma quadrant?
I love how they don't even need to worry about who declares war or who declares peace. Nobody would be dumb enough to fight them. He who fights the ferengi will end up penniless before the day is out.
The treatment of profit and females in the culture is very reminiscent of a certain religion's....
Continuity alert: In ST:TNG, the Ferengi were called that by a starship crew from Earth -
"Fereng" is a mild pejorative in South Asian languages for people of European stock, derived from the word "Frankish", much as Americans are called "Yankees" (as explained by Cmdr. Riker). In ST:TNG, "Ferengi" is NOT a word in the Ferengi language.
Sioux is not a word in the lakota, dakota, and nakota language.
So rules 45 and 95 are both Expand or Die?
Really well done!
Great videos as always
Although its all interesting, they really hit you over the head with the "We Worship Money" thing, don't they? ^_^
I think this is great ... but the Nagus' ears were all too small.
lol, great video.
I remember hating the ferengi when I was a kid... they were so cruel and ugly to me. Especially in the beginning seasons of deep space nine. But, as I'm sure you can expect... the more you get to know them and understand them, the values that they value, they really do start to grow on you.
That’s probably because they were the product of awful writing and political projecting on release, redeemed by DS9
I'd like to see a new Ferengi starship made. Any ideas for a new class and design?
Firangi in hindi means a different colour... Usually used to refer a white/black foreigner in India. I think it fits here since ferengi are of different colour compared to humans (usually portrayed by Americans).
Why does your map have the majority of Federation Space within the Beta Quadrant?
Great video dude, but wasn’t official first contact with daimon tarr or something in that episode with the tkon empire and those weird blue energy whips
I might be wrong, can’t remember which way round they went
please make a video about the gamma quadrant
Also pirates❤
Damn now I want the whole movie about Battle of Prexnak
!!!
love your content, keep it up! Thank you!
Nice narration from this... Hu-mon.......
Ferengi are the best race in star trek. I can digg all their rules of acquisition and try my best to obey the codes.
Sometimes the Starfleet upper echelons and section 31would make backroom deals with the Ferengi to get special weapons and intelligence.
Great video
Love your vids man
First official contact was made in Season one of the Next Generation episode "The Last Outpost". The video skipped this.
Technically Picard made first contact in the Stargazer books
@@UncleHaul Non-cannon. sorry. :(
@@UncleHaul If you want to get "Technical" about when humans first met a Ferengi, it was most likely in Roswell New Mexico. lol (Note: Not official first contact) Or when the NX-01 made contact. (Note: Also not official first contact.)
Playing megacorp in stellaris be like
I gotta ask, why do you not draw pupils on their eyes?
I like the way it looks.
I think the name Ferengi is derived from a slang term for the British expats working in Asia for the British East India Company.
I seem to recall Nog taking a liking to eating live earthworms during his stay with Cisco's father during his time in the Starfleet Academy.
#1 Tako Tube grubs. "Your father is the only human I know, who can get me live ones."
No founders video?
The Ferengi take over everything at the end.
Ds9 was so deep
"Never have sex with your boss's sister"
i'm starting to like the ferengi.
Rule 113: "Always have sex with the boss"
Now consider the fact that the Rules of Acquisition are considered to be close to religious texts to Ferenghi business men. Now also consider that, when this rule was written, _all_ Ferenghi business men were _men._
DS9 really made sure to fuck the ferengi up by the end of the series.
The usa now has its own grand nagus and board of liquidator. Will he be a good ferengi.
Such an interesting Star Trek faction
Why do they say “is a contract” twice? Seems intentionally redundant
It’s to add emphasis through repetition, not that complicated
"Perfect civilizations do not exi..."
I was about to say the ferengi are like the IG banking clan but I'm not so sure 😅
I'm pretty sure Troi was bullshitting about the not being able to read Ferengi - since there's times when she mysteriously can.
It's called "reading body language".
What accent is that? I've heard only one other person speak it myself in passing, but I don't know what region it is from.
Inconceivable!!
maybe my favorite star trek aliens. they make me think a laugh what else can you ask for
I like how this just turned Quark into a copycat businessman instead of a Pioneer.
It is neg from the word negocium (to negate pleasure time).
This story would be called, "the Ferengi Divide, "
Brunt takes power and leads a coup against Rom.
The conflict is called "The Ferengi Divide"
The CNF wins, and everything goes back to normal.
The characters that inspire this story:
Grand Nagus Zek.
Ishka, mother of quark and Rom.
Nog, the Starfleet Ferengi.
Rom, who everyone underestimates.
Again, I am sorry if anyone finds my idea crazy. I am just expressing myself. Please do not hold it against me.
*thumbs up* great video
Anyone else see the parallel between Grand Nagus Rom of DS9 and Emperor Cotto from B5?
