"Big Time" was another song off of this album that gets forgotten about.
Also, "In Your Eyes" Live (Secret World) is pretty freakin amazing. And you may be familiar with the studio version of the song because it's been featured in a few movies and TV shows.
*And, as I understand it, "live" videos are less likely to be blocked?
That huge growling drumstick bass line in "Big Time" --quite some collaborative effort by Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta...
A real sleeper.. not off of the Solo LP is Steam.. awesome base line and very catchy.

"Red Rain" is definitely a song by him to go to. Much more dramatic, but his wailing voice in that song is so powerful.

Check out "In Your Eyes" live from his Secret World tour. He has worked with a WONDERFUL singer from Senegal ad Paula Cole also joined this tour. You will have a great experience! The song was their finale was a concert in and of itself!

Peter Gabriel used a lot of black musicians in recording, hence the "neo-soul" sound...but his bass player was a permanant sidekick in his band and was a funkmaster.

That was my intro to solo Peter after he left Genesis. Free nelson Mandela by the Specials and Sun City by Little Steve Van Zandt are other great songs about apartheid South Africa.

In Your Eyes (Secret World Live) is a great song to see! Peter wrote this song for actress Rosanne Arquette originally. This is a unique performance on it!♥️
Peter is sometimes put in the "Art Rock" category, or "Progressive", and ha was the singer for Genesis before Phil Collins. Peter is his own genre, and he has so many amazing songs. Washing of the Water, Blood of Eden, Salisbury Hill, I Grieve, Mercy Street... it just goes on and on.
Peter does have a soulful voice. He was the lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis in the 70s with Phil Collins as their drummer. Some of his solo stuff you should hear: "In Your Eyes", "Shock the Monkey" and "Games Without Frontiers ".
"Digging in the Dirt" is an emotionally intense song by Peter. He can joke and be sarcastic or be serious with his lyrics. I've been into Peter over 45yrs love the guy. "Speak" is another great song.
The first song I heard from Peter Gabriel was "Shock The Monkey"-1982 on MTV. Another funk based song to watch is the music video "Big Time"-1987 it is pretty cool and funny.

I loved this song as a kid. Later I learned that everything he is talking about is a sexual euphemism, He wants to be her sledgehammer. He wants to give her a steam train, etc.
I cherished this video! MTV played it every 15 minutes. My 2 year old son would stop tearing up the house and watch it every time!
Great reaction! PG is amazing. You should check out his Secret Live video of the song "In Your Eyes," from the same LP. It was a massive hit, but on this particular tour he incorporated a bunch of well known African musicians like Papa Wemba, along with African percussionists, etc., and came up with a true World Music vibe and sound. The whole concert video is incredible with a really beautiful, positive vibe. Cheers!

I've had the pleasure of seeing Peter Gabriel live in concert twice in my life; once in 1983 and again in 2012! Needless to say, both Live Shows were Amazing.

I love Peter Gabriel when he goes all visual sideways like his video for SHOCK THE MONKEY or DIGGING IN THE DIRT. But his quiet moments are great too.
BIKO, IN YOUR EYES and GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS are excellent tales from this very creative man.
Peter Gabriel said that 60s Motown was a major inspiration for this song. But they added an 80s twist on the music…especially the drums!
Former Genesis member and Prog Rock prodigy. He's extremely inventive. He hid the R&B in this quite smoothly. He is fantastic live, every tour. If you do live, if you want to see what it's like to be at one of his shows, a great example of In Your Eyes, off the Secret World Tour.

Just started checking you guys out and it's nice to see and hear young people hearing some of the greats. I'm 65 now and I remember when I first heard Peter Gabriel was in 1969. He had a band called Genesis. The song was Watchers of the Sky. If you check it out you'll see a young Phil Collins playing the drums. Let your ears take a journey with your mind and enjoy the great music of my time. .
Oh Peter Gabriel is absolutely amazing! That whole album is! He was the lead singer for Genesis and left for a solo career which went through the roof! Phil Collins was only on drums then…but took over the singing as well. They had some great songs and then went on to his massive solo career as well. Peter Gabriel’s voice is phenomenal in every way. Too bad you didn’t see the video. It’s so good with this song. All his videos are amazing!

Great song to dance to. Back in the 80s me and my homeboy Martin were like this🤞. Whenever you saw him you saw me. We were cruising in my 72 lowrider Chevy Nova drop to the ground. Whenever I picked him up he would always ask me to put this song on Sledgehammer. So it reminds me of him to this day. All we did was play pool, girls and clubbin'. He was from Fresno California and I was from LA. We met each other in Phoenix Arizona and when our favorite Club shutdown we kind of parted ways. This song is dedicated to Martin Hernandez

in 1984 I graduated H.S. moved from playing Classic Rock Hard Rock for 5 years, 3 making money on the weekends playing in bars starting at 15, to loving/playing Heavy Metal. But even I loved this song. Such a damn good groove.

Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of Genesis. He left the band in 1974-75 after recording his final album with the group (the lamb lies down on broadway ) The second part of his career (solo) was possibly even better ..............
The music video is Hall of fame, but I'm glad you reacted to this version first. People get hung up on the visuals and fail to appreciate the music.

Salisbury Hill and Kiss the Frog are probably the most watched listened to songs from Peter...his pairing up with Kate Bush after he left Genesis brought out more musicality of him and his expression. In Your Eyes is another great song with Kate. The Live renditions are worth the view, either for reaction or just for your own pleasure.
Peter was very instrumental back in the 80s with his opposition to apartheid in South Africa and has been involved with amnesty international with human rights around the world. Biko, Wallflower, No More Apartheid are several songs that deal specifically with these issues. Aside from that, just a great song writer with songs you can just jam out to such as this one

Great song on a classic album. You should react to another hit song off this album called "Don't Give Up," an incredible duet with Peter Gabriel and the brilliant Kate Bush. That song has been credited by many for changing their minds about suicide or harming themselves (including Elton John).

Secret World Live. In Your Eyes of course but anything from that concert video is spectacular. He makes what I would call “world music”. The only other mainstream band/ artist I’d classify that way is Dave Matthews Band, especially early albums. There’s so much going on it’s a total musical experience.

You should have watched the Music Video - from back when a segment of the Artists, like Gabriel, wanted to make Music Videos that were also Art. It is one of the best Music Videos ever made - "Big Time" is also another video from Gabriel that is sort of sibling of the "Sledgehammer" video.
When this came out, It was irresistible and FUNKY, and, you're right, I immediately thought of the Stax Records sound of the sixties.
