Excellent tutorial video man! Very in depth and descriptive! I even learned some more things about Launchbox/Bigbox. I have modded 2 cabinets so far and I purchased the forever license. I used a Dell SFF Optiplex 7010 with the 1650 Nvidia graphics card and maxed to 32gb of memory. That was all done on my Space Invaders which I modded with a 4 player control panel. I'll probably be going back to this video as I reconfigure things on my cabinet. Great job man!
Whoa that’s some pretty high specs for emulation! I just found that I could emulate all the stuff I play on MAME with a PC with 4GB ram! I was surprised.
@@KillerArcadeGames Yeah I figured I would just max everything out then I wouldn't have to worry about certain games not running right. lol And now I recently scored on a bare Simpsons A1up cabinet that I'm turning into a custom 4 player TMNT. I already ordered the 20" TMNT bezel from Tulsa Arcades. So stoked man!
@@KillerArcadeGames Got my encoder boards yesterday for my Ridge Racer and started messing with it last night. It is so cool now that I have a PC sit down arcade racing cabinet! Now I just need to manually set my controls for MAME, Model 2, Model 3 and TeknoParrot. lol It's a start and I'm enjoying myself for the most part. lol Hey my wife and I went to the local arcade yesterday and they had 4 Hydro Thunder cabinets side by side! As far as I could tell only one had been converted into a LCD monitor. The other ones seemed to have the CRTs in them! We had a blast playing those and a bunch more arcade games! Just thought I would share with you.
I'm late, but as someone who owns fully upright, real arcade cabinets and have built customer arcade sticks I have some experience I'd like to share if you ever decide to update this tutorial. Suzo|Happ parts can still be purchased but since the move to produce parts in China there's been changes in some materials used, but it gets the job done and no one really would tell the difference except for a few. The 'cherry' microswitches tabs fits into .187 female quick disconnect. If you're into automotive/electronics then you're familiar and should be capable of removing the ones that's used for the Sanwa buttons and crimp on new .187 connectors so you don't have to damage/modify the ones with the kit to fit on these microswitches. It'll be some extra work, but you'll have something that's cleaner and will fit snug and tight. There's a total of 3 tabs on a microswitch. 1 by itself on one of the side and 2 next to each other on another side. The single tab is for the ground and the other cable needs to connect to... the tab closest to the single tab (NO = normal open; for open circuit, which means there's not going to be anything going open until the circuit is closed by depressing the button) the other tab is the NC, for normal closed; that circuit will remain closed/on. Which means that it'll be like someone is holding down the button. You don't want that. As for tightening the button nut, you can buy a "button wrench" for Happ buttons. Although these mods are great, people need to bear in mind that the control panel layout was designed to fit this Arcade 1Up mini arcade cab. So 2 player play is going to be very close as a full upright cabinet is a bit wider providing more elbow and overall space. Personally, I think this is great, but am not a fan of the control panel layout. One could go further and create their own wider control panel (with the know how) and with the provided kits/mods, but it's more work and more cost.
I wish I could say I was working on a new mod and able to record new stuff. But then again, that video took so long to make so I went with the “remix” option haha. It is funny to watch it back though. It’s only about 15 months old but feels like forever ago.
This video is awesome. I've been planning on doing this exact same project in the very near future so I'll be bookmarking this video to come back to it when I follow through. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
I followed everything and my cabinet works like a charm only one thing I have to change but wished I could do like he did aka get my pc out of my tower and install it inside the cabinet like he did because when I did it it wouldn't have no screen working
Done this yesterday! Works awesome! Appreciate the time you put into the video! I have one problem though.. the top light on my mk2 isnt lighting up. Do you know were i put the cable for it?
Im about to put a mini pc in my arcade 1up street fighter cab that I been trying to finish modding for a year Bobby Vu my boy just hooked it up with Batocera can't wait man also I need to finish my NBA jam to NFL Blitz cab mod
Let me know how it goes if you do! The last video seemed to get many people through the process. This one has more detail so hopefully it will be easier. If you have trouble just leave me a comment or email and I’m happy to try and help.
@@KillerArcadeGames Hello. Thanks for the video. I am completely new to this and your the most detail I have seen and it’s great. I need the baby steps and your just about there. Lol. There are several things I would still have to clarify or understand better. As for MAME. Is this just for Arcade games. I see people that have thousands of games including NES and SNES, and many other game consoles even newer ones like PlayStation and so forth. Are you only installing Arcade games with this. I think I have learned so far that MAME is for Arcade games. Maybe I’m wrong. I have not played Arcade games for a long time. I just bought my first Arcade Console from Arcade1up called the Mortal Kombat Legacy Edition. There are differences in mine compared to this video. Thanks.
Really thinking about doing it as well, i have the UMK 3 cab since over a month i think but i'd love to have more games to play now. Awesome video thank you so much.
Thank you so much for making these videos. Found your channel and have been binge watching your videos. Getting ready to mod my machine to a name cabinet.
@@KillerArcadeGames Are you willing be paid to set everything up for someone so they can just install all the parts after you have programmed everything.
With a mix of this and eta primes video I feel confident enough to go for it. Just got my sf 2 cab new from amazon but its pcb was bricked. A 60% refund later, lets go i'm ready to do this
Hi, what If my PC Is 10ft outside the cabinet? What wires are essential to connect the PC to the cabinet. Also can I just hook up my 3.5mm powered speakers to the control board audio output since the HDMI Is connected to the monitor for sound? Thanks
That should be fine. As long as your cables can reach. The USB controllers may be the only issue but even those should work. Just don't use a USB cable or extender that goes over 10-12 feet or the signal might not work.
Wish there was a micro-cabinet for racing games. Would love to build a MAME rig with California Speed, San Francisco Rush, Rush 2049, Cruis'n USA/World/Exotica, etc someday.
That would be great, especially if it were a sit down good quality cab lol. I turned my Star Wars cab into somewhat of a racing cabinet. If you haven't seen it, check it out: ruclips.net/video/VC4Cy12zkT0/видео.html I have Rush, California Speed, Cruisin' and more on there. Its actually a decent alternative to a dedicated racing cabinet.
A good informational video. but personally I don't think it's worth the time to mess around with the extra stuff (Launchbox etc), but I can see why you did for your particular setup since it's more optimal to be as automated as possible given it's in a arcade cabinet and you are trying to keep more typical use (with mouse/keyboard through typical MAME) at a minimum. but for more of a typical person, something like X-Arcade etc running a typical MAME setup variation will offer more bang-for-the-buck. but just to list what I use, as it might be beneficial for others... I suggest using something like Linux Mint (Xfce version) instead of Windows as you can still run the Windows version of MAME emulator on that with Wine installed. you won't have to worry about updates/sleep etc since, by default, Mint will look for updates if connected to internet (by default it checks shortly after boot up, then every 2 hours) but will not install any without your permission. but even this can be disabled upon boot up easily enough in the 'Session and Startup' section and simply uncheck the 'Update Manager' and then you don't have to worry about updates and you can leave this connected online if you want since there is no real security risk here since nothing is accessible. I don't think screen monitor powering down after inactivity will be a issue either, but even if it is, that's easy enough to fix through 'Power Manager'. basically on Linux there is less stuff to mess with you vs Windows and it's completely free and can be installed to pretty much any hardware. there is a Linux version of MAME to (the official version) which can be installed (on Mint or other Ubuntu variations) with 'sudo apt install mame' (currently this installs MAME v0.242 on Mint 21.1-Xfce which is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) and it looks basically like the one in your video here. but with this, it does not like UMK3 Plus BETA 2 (it appears all official MAME versions cannot run this since it requires loading four additional files that the official MAME versions don't appear to be programmed to do) but you can get it working with 'MK2 Plus BETA 2' simply by running 'mame mk2.zip' from terminal (once your roms are in proper folder etc) since that apparently ignores non-matching file hashes. I use Linux Mint 21.1-Xfce currently on my primary PC (i5-3550 CPU at 3.5GHz etc) and run HBMAME 0.245.11 (Apr 7th 2023), which is the Windows version, specifically for MK2 Plus BETA 2 (from Dec 18th 2018)/UMK3 Plus BETA 2 (from March 7th 2022) as it works with those games out-of-the-box (you may have to tweak file naming of your ROM files as I did and left it in a extracted state without zip, but I think you can use zip to etc) unlike official MAME which does not. if you don't plan on running modified games, then regular official MAME might be a better choice. but I personally like HBMAME specifically for those two games where as the rest ill probably just use the official MAME release that comes with Linux Mint that I mentioned above. but if someone needs to run a older version, it's probably easier to just use the Windows version on Linux through Wine. for those who want to access the 'EJB Menu' very easily (simply pressing 'block' when it's enabled will immediately take you to that screen instead of having to do it officially with very fast hands as it appears you got to be within about 4.5 seconds which I doubt I can personally do), you can do that to as I got small XML files applied to MK2/UMK3. it's off by default. but it's easy to enable temporarily by going to the 'cheats' menu after you start up MK2 etc, then simply enable the EJB menu, close out of that general screen and press BLOCK on Player 1 (Player 2 side might work, but I never tried it) and you will be taken to that EJB menu. after adjusting your settings and restarting the game it will go back to normal as the EJB Menu will be 'off' in the cheats and block button will function normally again. but if for whatever reason the game gets stuck and won't exit the EJB menu, you can press 'TAB > Dip Switches > Service Mode = Off'. then you can properly exit the EJB menu and game will work as expected once again. I run a X-Arcade stick which works well and is probably a easier/cheaper alternative for those who want a arcade like experience but without paying TOO much money for it. it's button layout is not exact to how MK2/UMK3 and the like are, but it's close enough to where you won't have any issues playing. TIP: with that HBMAME, which I would imagine will work on official MAME to (which I have not tested yet), is that optionally, if a person wants to practice replaying a certain character or boss on MK2 etc, you can create a save state with 'SHIFT+F7' and then press a key on the keyboard like say '9' and it will create a save point. then if you want to get back to that precise moment when the game is running, press 'F7' and then select your save point from menu shown and it will immediately resume from where you left off. this can be beneficial for people who want to replay Kintaro/Shao Kahn over-and-over from MK2 for example without having to replay through the game like usual to get there all of the time as this can help one get better at the bosses and spend less time doing it. what I suggest is if you reach a point you want to save, pause the game with the 'p' key, then do the SHIFT+F7 etc. TIP: you mentioned in the video that MAME maps the buttons weird... newer versions of MAME (I don't know exactly which version this took effect though) are easy because it's named properly with 'High Punch' etc right from the TAB screen when configuring controller instead of 'Button 1' etc, so you know exactly how to configure it with no confusion. but if you want to use a older version of MAME for example, it comes out like this (on MK games) with the 'button x' being what MAME shows and what you want to assign to it for proper button setup (so for example when you set 'button 2' in MAME, you press where you want the HP to be which is top left button on X-Arcade etc)... Button 2 = HP Button 5 = BL Button 3 = HK Button 1 = LP Button 6 = RN Button 4 = LK on my X-Arcade stick (I got the older 2 Player model with serial port connection (which I bought the USB adapter for it years ago so it works on pretty much any PC), which I had since probably sometime in the 2000's decade) I have the button layout like... HP RN HK LP BL LK RN N/A note: the "N/A" I did not assign since it's not needed. I setup two RN(Run) buttons because it gives people a option to choose which they want. I pre-programmed SLOT 2 on my X-Arcade stick so that one only needs to assign the 'RN' button to either one and it will work on both of those since you can program the X-Arcade to pretty much any key on the keyboard and I programmed both 'RN' buttons there to the same key on the keyboard. so instead of having to assign two keys through MAME, I only need to do it once since the two physical buttons on the X-Arcade stick are the same key on the keyboard. so MAME basically thinks I am pressing the same button even though I am not. in the HBNAME I mentioned above these (the 'button 2' etc naming) are not needed since it's easy to tell given things are named properly so you can't be confused, assuming you already know basic button layout of MK games in real life (which I mentioned above pretty much, but slightly tweaked to suit X-Arcade stick).
Watching this while adding Happ Competition buttons to my Player 2 on the Marvel Vs Cab from a1up... I can tell you for sure it doesn't matter which .187 connector goes where in terms of Wire color. Not to be confused with the actual connectors, the information in that was right, but the color of the cable in relation to the port doesn't matter.
@@KillerArcadeGames Ya! Thank you for your content and for taking the time to make your videos and reply to the comments. Yesterday I actually ran in to an issue where my cables for one of my buttons wasn't long enough to reach the encoder... I had to take a spare encoder cable for a .110 terminal button and splice them. My first time and it all went well.
I don't understand why you couldn't reuse the original buttons? Are they not fitted to connect to the updated usb encoder? As of November 2020, the 1uparcade comes with speakers behind the marqueue. Should be able to use those onboarded ones as well correct?
You can use the original buttons. I just hate them lol. I love Happ buttons since that’s what was in the original cabinets. They feel so much better in my opinion. You can use your original speakers too, but you’ll need an amplifier for them. I believe you’ll also need to cut the 3.5mm tip and remove the wire casing to expose what are speaker wires inside. Then plug them into your amp. You can plug your PC into the amp with a 3.5mm to RCA cable.
Damn dude you're really passionate about this. I can tell a lot of work was put into this video. You even show us where to buy everything. The attention to detail was really good down to the measurements. I'll probably end up watching this video over and over until I have it memorized. Then I'll finally build a cab while reciting every word in this video 🤣 thanks for the great video 👍🏻
Wow, Thanks for watching all of this, it did take FOREVER to put this together. My most asked questions were like "How do a mod an arcade1up?" "Can you do it for me?" Going through all this work was worth it to help people the best I possibly could. I tried to be thorough without wasting their time. The good news is it's paid off, lots of people have used it to mod their cabinets which is rewarding to me.
Thanks! Yes you can use the buttons that come with the Arcade1Up. The sticks can be used too but I'm not sure exactly what has to be done to use them. They might just plug into the USB encoder board or you might have to splice wires. The splicing would be more difficult but I have done it when upgrading the sticks on my stock Killer Instinct Arcade1Up cabinet.
I was thinking about modding my Dynamo cabinet with a pc for Fightcade I don't want to change my Happ joysticks and buttons on my deck with a pc build how do I work around that ?
Buy the USB encoder boards that are linked in the description and wire the controls to them. They’ll come with short wires but they should be enough to connect your existing controls. Your controls will then be wired to the PC with USB and seen as their own controller. I think your toughest problem would be if you’re trying to use the CRT in the cabinet. I’m building a MAME cabinet out of an old MK2 currently, the CRT connection to the PC was the biggest pain for me. I’m not finished, but I did get it working by using an old graphics card and some hacked drivers to make it display properly on a CRT. That said, you can use cheap converters that should work but they won’t look as good. If you have the cabinet converted to LCD, this won’t be a problem.
I have a 1UP golden axe machine. Im putting in a Raspberry Pi. Can I use the controls that came with the machine? It doesnt have usb connectors so can I buy an adapter?
@@KillerArcadeGames ya i charged it and a no go, seem like it worked for couple of days then it someone how stop working but theres lights come on tho? When i switch it on
I had some trouble with the external power switch segment - the pc i used for this (dell optiplex 7010 SFF) had a power switch pinout with only 5 pins, and the switch i ordered came with 4 pins, how would i connect this properly?
The rest went smoothly however, if i can’t connect this properly at the end of the day i’ll still be left with a fully functioning pc arcade cabinet, so thank you so much for this video eitherway
I’ve only done it once on a Dell and can’t remember exactly which pins it is. You can just try different pins, if it powers up the PC you’ll know it worked. I did run into an issue with Dell PCs and the button. The PC would halt boot up because it knew the stock setup had been disconnected. It still worked but you might have to press a keyboard button to let it finish booting.
How did you do the rest of the pins for the power button? When I plug in just the power like you show and power up the PC, it says 512- rear chassis fan will not turn on. Using the old switch everything is fine. I can't find what looks to be proper pinout of the motherboard online. Any help would be great as it is the last thing I need to get my build complete. I modded the 4 player controls to each have 4 buttons so it covers almost any 2-4 player game minus fighting games.
@@KillerArcadeGames Thanks for the response. I am still trying to figure it out since the original switch doesn't show an issue. Pretty sure I may need a jumper to keep everything happy
hey! I'm trying to gut my killer instinct 1up (since the pro is out) and put a tekken tag pcb in there. I'd imagine the monitor mod is simple enough this way since it doesn't need to translate to the 1up pcb, but do you know how to make sure the buttons are properly working and such? i remember you mentioning in other vids that another gentleman modded the mk4 1up, would they have happened to document "how it's done"? love the vids man
I’ve never done one myself but have had a cabinet with an arcade PCB inside. You do need a video converter. A JAMMA harness will be what you use to connect the buttons and sticks (and video to the video converter). You’ll probably have to just change the stock controls to Happ or IL controls. As far as I know no one has made a video on the process.
Question 🙋🏾♂️ are u able to play ur emulated games as well as tha arcade 1up version at the same time or wen u mod ur cabinet 🗄️ ur stuck wit the mod ???
So I am all set. I found a cheap Mortal Kombat online and have the PC ready to go. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me though. My PC plays most of what I want it to but if down the line I wanted to get a pandoras box (some of the newer stuff doesn't work on my older PC) would it be as simple as switching out the PC or will all of the equipment and buttons etc need to be redone?
Hey Mike, sorry about the delayed response. You should be able to use the same joysticks and buttons with a Pandora's Box. The USB encoder boards wouldn't be needed though. I believe all Pandora's Box's are JAMMA so you'll just wire the buttons and sticks up with those JAMMA wires. The video signal may be different so you might need an arcade video to HDMI/VGA converter. That's about $30-$45 depending on which one you get. I've never installed a PB but if its JAMMA, its like installing a standard real arcade PCB.
I have a question: How do you put an hdmi cable when the pc you recommend doesn't come with one only vga and display port? Did you put a video card in? Or can use a display to hdmi adapter? I'm thinking of upgrading my raspberry pie setup to pc and my raspberry pie is already hdmi ready
Know this is a 3yr old video but I'm just getting into the scene and modding a broken PacMan legacy to run Mame. The coin button, do you wire it to any certain slot or just a regular button
I feel like I am the only person in the world who cant get this mod to work. After getting the wrong VGA control board on my first attempt I re-ordered the right control board for my Street Fighter 2 Yoga Flame edition monitor. I connected all the wires exactly as shown and plugged in my Gaming laptop into the HDMI port on the VS-Display control board. Nothing happens! Just a blank black screen. I know you probably can't help me but I don't know what else to do or what could be wrong. Everything looks right and is plugged in correctly. I know you posted this video 3 years ago but any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Chris, Thanks very much for posting this I had no idea any of this was even possible! Definitely going to give this a go, sorting software atm which is going well. I have come across a couple of features on MAME that you might well have come across but I'll share just in case you have not. The info screens that popup every time a game is run can be disabled. A mame.ini file needs to be created first then edited. Just go to your MAME dir and run the commands below (the first ls just shows the file does not exist initially). I used powershell for this guess msdos prompt would would just as well. PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini ls : Cannot find path 'C:\Games\Emulators\MAME\MAME216-mk\mame.ini' because it does not exist. PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ./mame64.exe -cc PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini Directory: C:\Games\Emulators\MAME Mode LastWriteTime Length Name ---- ------------- ------ ---- -a---- 29/12/2020 16:40 11192 mame.ini PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> Edit mame.ini (notepad will do), in section for CORE MISC OPTIONS set skip_gameinfo to 1. Unfortunately I've not found away to stop the warning messages that emulation is not 100% (not too worried though). One other thing as a kid I always hated that the display units were never really sharp, I know some people want to recreate the scanline effect and that is fine each to their own. However if you should want to remove this try the -nofilter option at the command line as a test (it even works if you add it as an option in launchbox when added to Default Command-Line Parameters), I love it... no more blurred display! Thanks again, Paul
I did find the skip game info screen option! Its actually in the regular menus of MAME, only on newer versions though. I originally changed it by using the .ini method though. This comment will be helpful to those who see your layout of the command prompt...commands lol. I've heard the only way to stop the warning screens is to compile your own version of MAME (which seems way above my pay grade). I'm really interested in trying the nofilter thing. I like the idea of scan lines but never got them working when I tried. Thanks Paul!
@@KillerArcadeGames Sorry, -nofilter does not give scanlines it just removes all filters I personally prefer this but can understand why others would not, try pacman with -nofilter I think it looks awesome. Think I came across that link where they suggest recompiling MAME... way above my pay grade as well !
Amazing video. I am trying to mod my Mortal Kombat cab and I have a question. Why do you need extra black buttons for coins when you already have two white buttons for player 1 and 2? Do you use those buttons for some other purpose??
Thanks! I added them for adding credits to games that need them and the middle button is an exit button. You could skip that part but you’ll need to use a keyboard or some more complicated button mapping for credits and exiting games.
@@KillerArcadeGames Understood! Thank you so much for your response. Can you also let me know if the top volume and On/off buttons are of any use if I am modding the cab with a pc?
@@KillerArcadeGames Thank you! One more question sorry :), what is the white cable that you have plugged in to VSDisplay at 13:22? On VSDisplay it’s labelled as keyboard but the keyboard can be connected to the PC directly, so a little curious :)
@@zohaibhkI believe it’s the monitor’s controls. You really don’t need to mess with it much. It’s got a menu button and some others on it. I don’t think I ever used it.
Your video was excellent and it allowed me to build the arcade of my dreams right in my own house! I am not sure if I’m missing it or not but I am having issues finding out how to get the marquee to light up when powering on. I have no idea if I’m missing an adapter or not. It’s the KI arcade 1-up and I just have the Y-cable dangling down with nowhere to plug it in?
Have ordered all the parts and almost ready to go! Is there a way to have the stock power switch that's built into the control desk as some kind of master switch for the computer?
I believe you can use the stock switch I just don’t know how. I personally didn’t want to use it so no one would accidentally turn off my PC without a proper shut down.
Amazing video! That hour went by fast cause of how awesome this video is! I have a question though, do i need to install a graphic card into the pc if i want to run ps2 emulator?
Thank for this video Chris! I'm looking to mod my own Jurassic Park 1994 arcade game. Do you think these steps would work? Also what controls would you recommend since it really was not a light gun tech game it was more of a rollerball joystick type shooter. I appreciate any advise you have. Thank you!
Are you going to make it out of an Arcade1Up? If so, most of this should work. You could use a flight stick that connects with USB or through an IPAC/APAC. Let me know how it goes if you do it! I love unique Arcade1Up.
This video is fantastic! Will use your links for sure from Amazon. Had a question originally was going to buy a pandoras box or raspberry pi but a light bulb went off in my head about an old desktop I had in the closet. Think a Intel e5300 running windows 7 has enough to run the cabinet?
Thanks Mike! I'm always a fan of using a PC over the Pi or Pandora's box. The PC you mentioned should work well enough to run games up to the level of Killer Instinct. I'm not sure you'll be able to run games like NFL Blitz though. The only other issue you might find with using an older PC like that is the boot up time will be longer than using the PC I linked to. My first version of this video showed me using old PC's I had lying around, one had a similar processor speed and an old school hard drive. That PC took at least 2-3 minutes to boot where it was ready to be played. The PCs I use now and link to have SSDs and faster processors so I can be playing a game within 1 minute of flipping the power switch. Its a minor inconvenience though so if you don't want to play newer more processor hungry arcade games, you can use your PC.
This was a really good job thank you for this. Would you happen to have something similar for race car games that require a different control setup if I were to mod Outrun cabinet with all the racing games? Also T2 or big buck Hunter cabinet with all the shooter games?
I’d say check out Kongs-R-Us for a driving cab tutorial! You can apply a lot of this videos tips but for wiring the controls, Kongs is what I used. The issue with T2 and Buck Hunter is you can’t reuse the guns. They just won’t work with a PC. So you’ll need a whole new set of guns. I did a light gun build, I just got my Sinden guns after a year of waiting. Here’s the cab without the Sinden guns: ruclips.net/video/cnDfxACEysk/видео.html
You can! I built a CarnEvil Arcade1Up mod with Aimtrak light guns. I'll be getting Sinden eventually...if they ever ship. Here's a video on that cabinet: ruclips.net/video/cnDfxACEysk/видео.html
Question, for your exit button configuration.. Instead of installing the J panel buttons for that purpose could you instead map the configuration for exit using two buttons avoiding having to install and extra button?
I think that's possible. I chose not to do that so there's no confusion. To go farther, I ended up installed these light up coin buttons. Here's the video on that: ruclips.net/video/Wa_PyT-NfdI/видео.html
This video will get you most of the way there. You don’t necessarily need a PC to run Tron though. I’d still use one just because I’m more familiar with PC. The joystick would be the most difficult part, but that shouldn’t be that tough. I’ve never installed one like that, I’m sure the process is similar to a regular joystick.
Great tutorial. Inspired me to get a 1UP SF2 cab especially. Unfortunately, the screen has a serial that even my good friend Google does not recognise - does anyone have knowledge of a compatible board for Model M170QGBN30-01B ? The serial number looks like it includes a manufacture date and, if so, this was only manufactured 6th June 2021 - maybe it is a new 1UP standard supply.
Thanks! I tried looking in to that number you left. I can’t find much currently. Is there possibly another sticker underneath that one? This has been coming up with other commenters. They say they have an odd number. I had something similar once, it turned out there was another sticker underneath.

I don’t know for sure, but I’d assume it’s possible. I’ve never found an emulator or software that couldn’t be launched with Bigbox. It may take some extra work like editing command line parameters but I’ll bet it can be done. You can always get help on that stuff from the LaunchBox forums. I’m sure someone there has done it before.
So it looks like every cardinal direction on joysticks needs its own wire, right? So for the street fighter controls (16 buttons plus 2 joysticks) I'd need 24 wires for the base? (not including the 2 additional coin/interface buttons I'll be adding?) Is that right?
That's right! I bought the double USB encoder pack when I built my Killer Instinct which has the same layout. At that time, they seemed to give more wires per order. When I ordered my MK2 kit, I had to salvage extras from a previous order to make it happen. I've seen someone selling extra wires on Amazon but I haven't found it again. I did complain to the seller that they sold the kit without enough wires and they said they'd fix it. But that's just a heads up.
@@KillerArcadeGames I found these www.amazon.com/Guwarry-Encoder-Terminals-American-Joysticks/dp/B07RQLH9T1/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=happ+button+cables&qid=1609381824&sr=8-3 - 20 cables for $10 are these the same thing? They look like it but I'm pretty new to this.
Great video - just what I need for starting out so thank you. Will the PC you have suggested handle PS2 and equivalent ROMs? If not would it be an upgraded GPU that is needed or would the CPU not handle games at that level?
This is a tough one since I've never used the stock controls. I think most of their stock joysticks use 4 or 5 pin connectors. So almost any of the USB encoder boards will work, I believe. The buttons will plug in like the Happ controls I show on this video.
Thank you for making this video. Very helpful. 👍👍🙇♂️ When you created a shortcut to place in the startup folder... You created a shortcut of a shortcut. If you delete the original shortcut this will probably deaden the shortcut in your startup folder. I would just create a copy of the desktop shortcut and place that in the startup folder. Just a thought... Maybe I'm wrong. It's been over 5 years since I was good with Windows.
I use Aimtrak guns right now but I have ordered Sinden, they’re just taking months to ship. It’s on an LCD. I just finished my light gun cabinet last year: ruclips.net/video/cnDfxACEysk/видео.html
I worked on that bit today, I think I initially tweaked it with the garage open and made it too bright. My adjustment board was in the back of the cabinet instead of in its cradle so I fixed that. I went on to changing the controls, the art looked great on the deck but pulling that piece of metal out must have made it move and the corners started peeling up and look milky now. I was hoping to keep it but now I need to order a replacement from XL Arcades. Thanks for checking out the video Mike!
Its probably a slight upgrade. Its tough to say without seeing the specs. I Googled it and found a few details. The seller my have changed some parts though.
One issue I'm having after setting this up is my joystick controls are backwards. Up is down, down is up, left is right, and right is left. It's like this for my mame and pc games I have installed. Some games like for example x-men arcade I can start the game in first player but then when I get actually into playing the game I have to use the second players controls to work the first player and vice versa. One last thing can you tell me which buttons in the mame setup menu go with a street fighter button layout like you did the mortal kombat layout? Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Have you wired the joystick backwards? It looks straight forward but if you're looking down at the top of the joystick, when you push the stick left it's actually pressing the right side microswitches. As far as X-Men goes, it shouldn't matter how the controls are wired, if you've assigned the stick directions and buttons to Player 1 it should just work. Even if you've wired the joystick backwards, it should still work as normal if you assign the controls. Its difficult to explain. Now, PC games will likely be backwards if its wired incorrectly since they don't usually let you assign each stick direction by pressing the stick left, right, up and down. They just see the joystick wiring for what it is. Street Fighter is pretty easy, you basically treat the buttons like reading a book, top to bottom, left to right. Button 1 would be the top left, two would be the top middle, 3 would be top right, 4 would be bottom left, 5 would be bottom middle and 6 would be bottom right.
@@KillerArcadeGames Thank you sharing that information with me about the street fighter button layout. But me and my buddy have modded arcades both were running raspberry pis with no problems mine is a two player street fighter cabinet and his is a 4 player cabinet that he ordered from 99 lives arcade. Mine I wired up myself using ETA Primes video. But I my buddy wanted to upgrade to a pc to play more games. So he bought the pc and I started setting it up in my machine first so all I would have to do when I went to his house is plug it in and setup the other joysticks/ buttons. But the controls being backwards started on my machine and did the same thing once I plugged it into his machine on all players. Along the way I found out pc games don't like the joysticks/ buttons. So someone on reddit recommended to download I forgot the name of the software but it basically just made windows think that they were xbox controllers instead. I would think if they were wired backwards I would have also had this problem when using the pi. What it matter if they were wired backwards since I'm mapping them in mame anyway? Thanks again
@@KillerArcadeGames Okay I got most of those problems fixed But is there a way to setup the mame controls for all the games? Or do you have to set the controls up for each individual game?
Just wondering, have you ever tried to use a linux distro for this? the filesystem is much faster, the OS is more stable and no issue with updates. it might be a bit harder to set up but it will work better (i'm assuming).
I haven't. I've actually never used Linux before. Its always sounded intimidating lol. I might dive in one of these days and see if I can figure it out.
@@KillerArcadeGames I use it for development and yes, it is a bit harder to set up some stuff, but google can help. But once you get anything running it is far more stable.
Hey Just bought arcade 1 up mortal kombat 2 midway machine. Is this tutorial able to work kn my machine? Like it is compatible and I can upgrade my mortal kombat 2 arcade machine? Any helps appreciated Thanks Steve
In most cases that will work. I found an issue with the Dell PCs though, the power button I used caused problems with the boot up process. The Dell PC knew I changed something and would give a warning/error on every boot. You had to clear it by pressing F1 I think. If you don't want to run Blitz or other higher end arcade games, you'll probably be fine with those processors. Blitz struggled a little more on the Dell Optiplex I tried. Thats why I went to the HP Elitedesk, it solved the Blitz issue and the external power button stuff.

Thank you for posting. I’m about to jump in but before I would like your opinion if I may? I’m wanting to build a NBA jam cabinet with Atari / Nintendo/ Super Nintendo/ N. 64/ Sega games plus NFL blitz/ capcom vs marvel/ madden (it’s ok if it’s the original) and I’m wondering If it this build would be overkill for my game selections? Would Raspberry or anything else be suite me better?
If you want to be able to play NFL Blitz the arcade versions, you'll have to go with a PC. The Raspberry Pi wouldn't be even close to powerful enough. I always go with PCs for these builds, I'm finishing up another one now. The PC is more capable and gives you a lot of options software wise.
First of all thank you for your videos and dedication to this game!! I am currently in a bind with the K.I. Pro A1U cabinet. My intentions were to buy the KI Pro and modify it to play MAME and other emulators, but at the price point I was considering buying something that needed less hours to get into it's final desired state. Would you be able to weigh in on your overall thoughts and feel of modding a "Pro Cabinet" versus buying something already multi-emulated?? P.S. hope to see you at the Arcade Expo!! Thanks
Buying a pre made emulation cabinet will be tough to find for less than the cost of a pro cabinet. If it is cheaper it’s highly likely it will be running a raspberry pi which won’t be powerful enough to run KI and definitely won’t play games made beyond that. I assume you want a larger cabinet than a standard Arcade1Up? It would be a ton cheaper to find a regular sized 1Up and mod that. I’ll see you in Houston!
It hasn't for me. However, I'm now using those motherboard "feet" to hold as many of those boards as possible. I actually just went through all my cabinets the other day to see how they're doing. They've all been working great, I only found some velcro that was losing its stickiness on the backing.
Hey man, just had a quick question! I'm planning on modding my Marvel v Capcom arcade1up. For the joystick set, does it matter which ones I pick or is just based on preferred color scheme? Thanks!
for some reason my launch box imported 2,000+ game art and I only have 6 games installed. Not sure why it imported all that art for games I dont even have. Wished there was a way to change this
You probably imported the full set. I did that the first time too. I'd delete all of the games from your Lunchbox, then watch this again: ruclips.net/video/wQgUvAtRVnA/видео.html make sure you just import your ROMs not a full set.
Did your original 1Up cabinet have the light up marquee? You can use a y splitter to connect it with the original power supply that's powering the monitor. My cabinets didn't come with light up marquees since they're all the original gen 1 cabs. I believe this is a splitter that would work: amzn.to/3t5wLQZ
@@KillerArcadeGames Thanks for the info and yes, I have the NBA Jam arcade1up with the light up marquee, there's a splitter inside but it's for marquee and the led light and will not fit with the power supply
Killer Arcade Games you know what would be awesome as well... messing around with real arcade hardware and when you have enough experience, you can do a how to video on how to set one up. Just a suggestion :)
EXPERT QUESTIONS FOR ALL: I am not that good with any of this stuff but I can play the hell out of NBA Hangtime online on my Arcade1up cabinet. I have an IMac desktop and fiber 1000 connection. I use Ethernet to play online (I think Retro Ralph was the video I saw that showed how to do that). The creators stated they use an emulation to run NBA Hangtime (probably Nba Jam and Jam T.E. too). Is there a way to put the original NBA Hangtime ROM on this cabinet to show all the players (really just wanted Reggie Miller and Glenn Robinson) and keep the online play? Is there a way to view the original software of NBA Hangtime to see how they programmed it such as the smarter drone or the rubber-banding cheat? For Tournament Edition, is there a way to put the original Mortal Kombat characters back on this game and the fatalities? I read somewhere that after version 2.0 they took them out. Finally in everybody's opinion do you think this is a good emulation/MAME of NBA Hangtime? Seems to me the gameplay, such as too many hung dunks, is not like the original arcade version.
My question is - can you emulate 1 up arcade games on pc? Silverstrike bowling on the goldentee cabinet is impossible to get as a mame rom but if you could get the goldentee 1 up arcade files to play on pc... that would be a game changer.
Arcade1Up is just doing what MAME does, but they use a different emulator. I’m sure someone could extract their software and run it on PC somehow but outside of online leaderboards there’s nothing special about it.
Silver Strike isn’t running on Arcade1Up’s hardware. The only one ive seen is Retro Ralph’s 1Up mod that had the arcade hardware inside. The only bowling game on GT 1Up is World Class Bowling. They did show a prototype cabinet once that had the “SSB” on the marquee but it wasn’t running the game.
Haha I wish they could emulate it. I bought a silver strike cabinet last year but ended up selling it. I think they should invest more in games that aren’t currently emulated. Hydro Thunder would be a big hit, another cabinet I bought because it couldn’t be emulated.
Wow - watched beginning till the end. One of the best tutorials available. Great job.
Thank you!
Hey my wife and I went to the local arcade yesterday and they had 4 Hydro Thunder cabinets side by side!
Cool update. Seeing the old clips mixed in was like a blast from the past.
I wish I could say I was working on a new mod and able to record new stuff. But then again, that video took so long to make so I went with the “remix” option haha. It is funny to watch it back though. It’s only about 15 months old but feels like forever ago.

@@KillerArcadeGames What do you think of the new Outrun cabinet that Arcade1up has as a potential sit-down racing cabinet?
Button 2 = HP
Button 5 = BL
Button 3 = HK
Button 1 = LP
Button 6 = RN
Button 4 = LK
on my X-Arcade stick (I got the older 2 Player model with serial port connection (which I bought the USB adapter for it years ago so it works on pretty much any PC), which I had since probably sometime in the 2000's decade) I have the button layout like...
HP RN HK
LP BL LK
RN N/A
note: the "N/A" I did not assign since it's not needed.
Holy hell bro you just wrote a whole essay
Watching this while adding Happ Competition buttons to my Player 2 on the Marvel Vs Cab from a1up... I can tell you for sure it doesn't matter which .187 connector goes where in terms of Wire color. Not to be confused with the actual connectors, the information in that was right, but the color of the cable in relation to the port doesn't matter.
Yeah, I found that out on accident. It just kind of works either way thankfully.

Have a question. I have happ buttons and encoder board, but a sanwa joystick. Can I use these together?
I believe so, it should work fine.
Thank you very much! Will update once I'm done modding mine thanks to your vid!
Awesome! I'm glad it was helpful.
@@KillerArcadeGames Have you come up with a better solution for a power button? Any insight on how to wire up the original on/off switch to the PC?
I have a 1UP golden axe machine. Im putting in a Raspberry Pi. Can I use the controls that came with the machine? It doesnt have usb connectors so can I buy an adapter?
You should be able to use the original controls and connect them to the USB encoders. You’ll need to buy those to make them work with the Pi.
@@KillerArcadeGames Ok USB encoders. Thank you. 👍🏻
I plan on using a mini-PC (which I assume works the same as a normal PC), I want to use the original cab speakers, do I need to by a Amplifier?
The mini PC should be fine. It depends on the hardware and which games you want to run. You will need an amp to use the stock speakers.
I have one if those keyboards small ones and it stop workn lights up but dont connect anymore to the pc idk why?
Dumb question: have you charged it in a while! Lol if you have, it may just be bad. I had one of mine die and had to replace it.
@@KillerArcadeGames ya i charged it and a no go, seem like it worked for couple of days then it someone how stop working but theres lights come on tho? When i switch it on
Maybe try unplugging it from the PC and plug it back in. Or just return it if you can.
Can you set up your light gun for weekend stream.. I have so many questions for you
Thank you for posting this video... Keep it up
I will do some shooters this weekend!
What are your favorite big box themes for a A1up cabs?
How did you do the rest of the pins for the power button? When I plug in just the power like you show and power up the PC, it says 512- rear chassis fan will not turn on. Using the old switch everything is fine. I can't find what looks to be proper pinout of the motherboard online. Any help would be great as it is the last thing I need to get my build complete. I modded the 4 player controls to each have 4 buttons so it covers almost any 2-4 player game minus fighting games.
I didn’t do any other pins except for the power switch. Power on/off is all I needed from it.
@@KillerArcadeGames thank you for your response! that means a lot. I may try to tackle this project in the next month or two
Question 🙋🏾♂️ are u able to play ur emulated games as well as tha arcade 1up version at the same time or wen u mod ur cabinet 🗄️ ur stuck wit the mod ???
You will lose those games because you’re removing the 1Up hardware. But you can just add the same games back in using MAME.
I usually just use the VGA option but you can get a display port to hdmi cable like this amzn.to/3NPWdEv
@@KillerArcadeGames thank you for the quick response!
Know this is a 3yr old video but I'm just getting into the scene and modding a broken PacMan legacy to run Mame.
The coin button, do you wire it to any certain slot or just a regular button
You can just wire it as a regular button and map it to insert coin in mame
Hi Chris,
Thanks very much for posting this I had no idea any of this was even possible!
PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini
ls : Cannot find path 'C:\Games\Emulators\MAME\MAME216-mk\mame.ini' because it does not exist.
PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ./mame64.exe -cc
PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini
Directory: C:\Games\Emulators\MAME
Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
---- ------------- ------ ----
-a---- 29/12/2020 16:40 11192 mame.ini
PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME>
Edit mame.ini (notepad will do), in section for CORE MISC OPTIONS set skip_gameinfo to 1.
Thanks again,
Paul
I think you can use them but I’ve never set them up and I’m unsure how to do it.
@@KillerArcadeGames Thank you! One more question sorry :), what is the white cable that you have plugged in to VSDisplay at 13:22? On VSDisplay it’s labelled as keyboard but the keyboard can be connected to the PC directly, so a little curious :)

Hi, any idea if a Simpsons or other 4 person cab would work so 4 people could play Mario Kart 64?
I’m glad to hear you liked it! You probably will need a low level graphics card for PS2 games. Something like GT 1030 is probably enough.
Hi I was wondering if you have a video about how you took the computer out of it's shell and put it on the side of the cabinet..
I didn't remove the "guts" of the HP but in my old style builds I did. There's video of it here: ruclips.net/video/fJ1CNyCF5gY/видео.html
Great video.
I was wondering? Do the original buttons work with the usb encoders? I kinda like the button that come with the Arcade1up systems.
You can use the original buttons.
@@KillerArcadeGames yes it will be out of an A1Up cab. Thanks for the flight stick idea. Once I get it going I’ll def let you know! Thanks again.
Do anyone here know the name of old ninja game say hopa when do magic as he can become twice the game look such shinobi plzzz

Found an hour 8300 elite i5 with 5 gb $144 on Amazon will that work?
Why won't Sanwa joysticks feel like a real cabinet? They're one of the best joysticks right?
Can you add lightguns to it? I know that traditional lightguns don't work on LED screens, but some people have shown off USB lightguns that do
You can! I built a CarnEvil Arcade1Up mod with Aimtrak light guns. I'll be getting Sinden eventually...if they ever ship. Here's a video on that cabinet: ruclips.net/video/cnDfxACEysk/видео.html
Hey sir quick question is it possible to use a controller on a arcade stick/machine if a person has trouble with fighting games/other games
You should be able to. As long as the fight stick is recognized by Windows. I used to play with an X-Arcade stick years ago and it worked fine.
Question, for your exit button configuration..
Instead of installing the J panel buttons for that purpose
could you instead map the configuration for exit using two buttons avoiding having to install and extra button?
I think that's possible. I chose not to do that so there's no confusion. To go farther, I ended up installed these light up coin buttons. Here's the video on that: ruclips.net/video/Wa_PyT-NfdI/видео.html
I’ve been wanting to turn mine into TRON, and so many people have done it. Yet I cannot find a guide of any kind
@@KillerArcadeGames Thank you for responding! I’m gonna see what i can do :)
I had something similar once, it turned out there was another sticker underneath.

can you also link dosbox to the arcade backend? than I can also run Mortal Kombat trilogy from there next to the other installments

Will the PC you have suggested handle PS2 and equivalent ROMs? If not would it be an upgraded GPU that is needed or would the CPU not handle games at that level?
I haven’t tried PS2 emulation but I bet it would work. At the very least a low end GPU like a GT 1030 would probably make it possible.
If I decide to use the original buttons and stick which encoder board will I need? Thank yoy
When you created a shortcut to place in the startup folder...
I probably did it just for video purposes, I had to reenact some stuff to record it. Hopefully it not an issue for some.
@@KillerArcadeGames 👍👍 Thank you for making this video.

No, just regular USB 2.0
How are you playing light gun games? Sinden gun on LCD? or CRT?
I use Aimtrak guns right now but I have ordered Sinden, they’re just taking months to ship. It’s on an LCD. I just finished my light gun cabinet last year: ruclips.net/video/cnDfxACEysk/видео.html
I actually thought what if I connected the X-Arcade machine to the PC in the 1up if I did what you did.
Can i add the 20” dell monitor to this setup?
Yes, you can skip the part about buying the LCD controller board since you’ll already have a way to plug a PC into the new monitor.

Yes
Will an hp elitedesk 800 g2 be an upgrade or will be the same as the ones you have in link?
@@KillerArcadeGames Okay I got most of those problems fixed

Its very similar and you should be able to do it using this video. The video converter board will be a different model.
Would a dell optiplex 780 core 2 duo or a 3310 suffice core i5 in place of the elite desktop?

Can sticking Velcro on the back of the controller boards cause any issues to the circuits?
It hasn't for me. However, I'm now using those motherboard "feet" to hold as many of those boards as possible. I actually just went through all my cabinets the other day to see how they're doing. They've all been working great, I only found some velcro that was losing its stickiness on the backing.
Hey man, just had a quick question! I'm planning on modding my Marvel v Capcom arcade1up. For the joystick set, does it matter which ones I pick or is just based on preferred color scheme? Thanks!
It shouldn’t matter which kind you choose. They should be able to hook up to the encoder board.
for some reason my launch box imported 2,000+ game art and I only have 6 games installed. Not sure why it imported all that art for games I dont even have. Wished there was a way to change this

This is very helpful, how did you get your marquee light up? I'm using a PC in my mod but my marquee isn't on
Did your original 1Up cabinet have the light up marquee? You can use a y splitter to connect it with the original power supply that's powering the monitor. My cabinets didn't come with light up marquees since they're all the original gen 1 cabs. I believe this is a splitter that would work: amzn.to/3t5wLQZ
@@KillerArcadeGames Thanks for the info and yes, I have the NBA Jam arcade1up with the light up marquee, there's a splitter inside but it's for marquee and the led light and will not fit with the power supply
This is an awesome guide!!!
Thanks!
I need to do this. What is the cheapest arcade1up you can do this with?
Thats tough to say, I know Killer Instinct has been on sale lately. It has a good 6 button layout which is great for general gaming.
can I use an old laptop for this?
You could, but the power button I link to won’t work. I also worry the laptop might get too hot at times but if it’s all you’ve got it might work out.
@@KillerArcadeGames I get that and wouldn't play the games for leader boards. I just want access to a game that isn't on mame yet.
@@KillerArcadeGames ahhh shit. You are right, lol. Well.... that sucks.
Haha I wish they could emulate it. I bought a silver strike cabinet last year but ended up selling it. I think they should invest more in games that aren’t currently emulated. Hydro Thunder would be a big hit, another cabinet I bought because it couldn’t be emulated.
