Absolutely should wear eye pro and a mask! Helps to wet sand always, I just had a teacher a few years ago with bad lung problems because they didn't wear masks

how can I sand the top of my jewellery piece that contains the gold flakes on it? I tried to sand a piece gently but my gold foil papers kept on coming off. should I not sand the top? can my resin stick to my clay if I do not sand the surface...?
Everytime I sand my pieces wet it always produces a white residue when its dry. I use pretty high grits (800-1000) so I'm not sure why I'm seeing a residue. Ive also used acetone to smooth out my pieces before sanding and it still produces a white residue. Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? It seems to subside a little when buffing with a piece of denim but it still looks unfinished in some places. (I'm making flat pieces soni definitely want it to be as smooth and blemish free as possible)
I would take a little more time sanding between each grit and invest in buying the higher grit options as well. I find that with acetone on certain colors it will leave a residue, but if you’re patient with it, always use a fresh q-tip, and apply it in a one-way direction, it should come out smoothly. I hope that helps you out!

i tried just sanding with an 800 today, the highest grit i had, it did pretty good! i just gotta get some polishing papers. i tried the denim but the piece i used, the blue dye was coming off onto my pieces🤦🏼♀️
The residue that you are talking about is the surface of the clay, the more time spent sanding at each grit level and the higher grit you go that will disappear.
There is no single grit that is the best. Start with a 320 and go up to at least 2000. You can buy wet and dry in packs with all the grits you need on Amazon or eBay.
I noticed you just dipped your paper into the soapy water and started sanding. I have always been told you get better results if you let your papers rest in the soapy for at least 15 minutes.....
Hi there - great videos really helpful - I have a question about your sandpaper. It’s become evident to me that there are different numbering systems for the grits depending on whether you use American, European or Japanese sandpapers. I was staggered to hear you using such high number sandpaper as 5000 and 7000 because I haven’t seen those numbers before. I’m guessing that’s Japanese? The 240 you used had the letter P in front of it that I’m familiar with and I think is European but the US system doesn’t have that letter in front of it and has higher numbers than it’s equivalent European counterpart ie. the US CAMI sandpaper grit labelled as 600 is the same as the European sandpaper grit as P1200. It’s all so confusing. I can’t see where you got your papers from but it would be really useful to flag up the precise paper you use so your global audience can follow your tutorial. It’s an excellent tutorial and this added information would be the icing on the cake!
240 grit is for heavy removal and reshaping polymer clay. 400 600 800 1000 is all that’s necessary. 1500 and 2000 is also helpful if you’re going to machine buff them but not with that stupid little Dremel wheel do you need a real muslin buffer wheel. If you see in the surface with anything below 400 you’re going to make deeper scratches that will take a lot more work to remove,
@@jaimecowan490 I don’t see anything rude about my comment. Dremels are stupid for trying to sand polymer clay you can do it much faster and more accurately with sandpaper . There is so much miss information spread around on RUclips and TikTok and unfortunately before people learn better they go out and spend money on tools they don’t need. I don’t know who started the whole Dremel with the felt wheel burning the edge of your earring around the perimeter off it does nothing but melt the clay it doesn’t sand it you’re grinding it off. We are sandpaper would do it and a 10th of the time. With this video she is explaining her process of the way she does it which is fine. My comment was not directed at the video maker it was directed at the whole practice of using a Dremel To sand polymer clay

That sandpaper is a totally different numbering system so if you’re using silicon carbide wet dry sandpaper that usually goes up to about 3000 at the highest and then switching to micro mesh sanding cloth they are two different systems 5000 micro mesh is more like 1000 silicone carbide.

Brooke Todd a tip to avoid finger prints is before you bake them, dip your finger tip in flour and gently rub this over!

I've seen other clay RUclipsrs recommend using varnish. Like, wood varnish for furniture.

I've had somewhat of the same issue, i was using 400, 600 and 800 to sand my pieces and it would leave it looking like foggy/clouded after they dry!

Hi when ever I sand my polymer clay earring it always rubs off the colour even though I am using coloured clay

Jia Bevli, It will do because wet and dry is an abrasive, just be sure to go up to 1500-3000 to finish for a silky smooth result.

While sanding doesn't the clay shape deteriorates like it's bending
I need help I made them with air dry clay and they raised up and cracked and broke
So you sand the top of the pieces not just the sides?
Yes you can sand any part of your piece that you would like to have a smooth finish!
