    I recently just decided to start my own business making polymer clay earrings! I have researched so much! While research, I came across your videos and just want to thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks. I know it’s hard for some creators to share their tips and tricks because it’s kind of like a secret. But you are so selfless to share all of yours and I have already learned SO much from watch your videos. So THANK YOU!

      Thank you so much! I totally understand and appreciate wanting to preserve unique, artistic techniques, but I also think helping each other grow as artists is important too! Imagine your favorite musician or author. If they weren't taught the basics by others, we wouldn't be able to enjoy their unique take on the craft today. It raises the bar for the quality of work we offer. When we all have access to the tools and knowledge we need to create, the creative possibilities are endless and exciting! There's room for everyone to be successful.

In my opinion there is no more fun or versatile medium out there and I love how it can be made to look like almost anything- leather, suede, stone, cake, ice cream...etc. I just want to commend you- you give great advice that’s really helpful, and will help a lot of people avoid the most common mistakes when they first start out. I’ve been baking my work on ceramic tiles and tenting with foil for over two decades now and so happy to hear you give such solid advice! New subscriber here!

    how do you bake your clay without pieces breaking because they are thinner than other parts of the sculpture? Like for example: the long skinny horns of a dragons or vines to some plants. Also if you are making a sculpture, can you build one part, bake it, build the other part onto that, and bake it again? (double baking)

    Hi, I’ve recently started making polymer clay earrings and I’m using kato polyclay. Because there aren’t many colors available, I’ve decided to mix some together by myself. However when I do that, little bubbles form inside the clay no matter how careful I am with folding and putting it through the pasta machine. Can anyone help me please, I’m getting really frustrated 😩 And the earrings look... well, ugly after baking

    • @RebeccaMarieW
      @RebeccaMarieW 3 года назад

      There are different types of clay and it will tell you on a package if it is oven dried or air dry. Polymer clay is typically oven baked to get it to harden. If you don't bake it, it will remain pliable until you do bake it.

    Hi there! I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m an aspiring maker so I’m just messing around with clay and tools trying to learn as much as I can. Can you give advice on attaching the stud post to the polymer clay. How do you prep? What glue would you suggest. Right now I’m experimenting with embedding and it’s so tedious but I’m afraid that glue won’t hold months down the line.

    • @abdalylopez7155
      @abdalylopez7155 4 года назад +3

      I just recently started making earrings as well! Idk if this a long term solution, but I use gorilla super glue (gel kind) to attach the Earring post then add a small layer of clay to the back and bake it again. It seems to work for me so far, so I hope that helps some :)

    • @theslowhaus
      @theslowhaus  4 года назад +2

      Thank you so much! This is a great question and a topic I will definitely cover in the near future. A little advice in the meantime, embedding is a very secure way to attach a post, although tedious. I personally use a strong gel adhesive. Because polymer clay is slightly flexible, the gel can flex with the movement and shape of the jewelry components rather than snapping if it were to flex in some way. I hope that is helpful for now and stay tuned for more info!

    • @Iamrahcole
      @Iamrahcole 4 года назад +1

      Abdaly Lopez I just picked up the gorilla glue 2 part epoxy. Not sure if that’s the kind you use. I tried E6000 and it didn’t hold well. I will try your technique and see if that works. Thanks for the advice.

    So I do bake with a second baking sheet on top of my pieces (as long as I don't have sculpted pieces anyway) and I'm still getting bubbles rising. My pieces also appear perfectly flat going into the oven but when I'm sanding them, it becomes obvious that the edges were raised (almost as if the whole piece was slightly dome shaped)
    I did finally order a pasta machine (Literally yesterday!) So I'm hoping that will help me with the conditioning phase but I'm wondering if there are any other steps I should take?
    Either way, thanks for sharing these videos, they have been incredibly helpful ❤

    I'm just starting to create my own clay earrings and I find your channel very helpful ! 👍
    I tried Sculpey 3 last time, I baked it for 15 min at 275F and some of my earrings just broke it two, it was so fragile... Do you still think that I must bake it longer ? 🤔

    • @theslowhaus
      @theslowhaus  4 года назад +8

      Thank you so much! And great question. You can try baking it longer, but Sculpey 3 is known for being very brittle and too soft for making jewelry. It's great for practice as a beginner, but I would avoid buying that line of clay for jewelry. This week I will be doing a video on polymer clay brands that I recommend so stay tuned!

    Hi, yours is the first tutorial/how-to that I am watching, so thank you so much for your wonderfully informative channel. I am wondering (because I dont have an 'oven' I can devote to this) - could I use an air-fryer as my oven to back the clay? I have one that rarely, if ever, browns the food I cook, so, because I can get a very low heat, and air will move very freely around the items I bake, I thought this might be a good thing to use. What do you think?

    • @jls12341000

    Thank you so much for your tips! I will definitely try some of them to get my sculptures to bake better. I didn't see this question answered, though. So, I'd like to ask you. I make little dragons with my clay and am having difficulty not burning the thinner parts of my work, like a long neck/head or tails. How do I get an even bake across the varying thicknesses that won't cause a shiny mark on the clay, like I've had some foil cause, when it touches on parts of the piece? Thanks again for the tips. I'm sure they will help with some of my issues.

    • @mrsk8383
      @mrsk8383 4 года назад

      they should be bendy, that is normal. If your piece is not very thick, for example figurines wouldnt bend because they are so thick. The bendiness also depends on the brand of clay you are using, some are more flexible than others

  • @jls12341000

    Lots of nice bits of info. The #1 tip for anyone should be follow the manufacturers directions. Different brands bake at different temperatures. And pay attention to measurements. If it says bake 1/4” thick piece for 20 min at 275f, if your piece is 1/2” thick you bake for at least 40 minutes. Never bake at higher than recommended. And bake multiple times. If it’s a layered piece bake each time you put a raw piece on. Always bake covered on UNglazed porcelain or ceramic or pizza stone. The problem is almost always the piece is underbaked, your oven is too hot, or you’re applying paint or other coatings that shouldn’t be baked. Test test test before you ruin a piece you’ve worked so hard on.

    I have a problem, I recently just started working with polymer clay and I use UV resin hard to seal it but I seem not to be getting the results I expected to get. firstly the resin flattens with no shine at all, no dome, the edges of the earring bends upwards and creates some sort of depression in the middle of the jewellery piece and when it comes to drilling it lifts off my polymer surface. now I asked for help before and I was told that I should extend my curing time, did that but the outcome was the same. might it be the brand of the resin that I am using or is there something that I am still doing wrong? please help me:(

I placed my piece on a piece of copy paper with a ceramic tile under it with a foil tent. I baked for the recommended time for Sculpey Premo (275 F). My piece broke when I tried to bend... I tried it for a little longer the second time... it broke again. I then kept it in there for an entire hour.. it STILL broke. I was monitoring the temp the whole time and made sure it stayed in the correct range. Every tutorial I watch says if it breaks, it hasn't cured long enough. I had it in there an entire hour! What am I doing wrong here?

      Hi Kelly, not sure if you'll see this as your comment was a year ago... but I'm wondering if you ever figured this out? I'm having the same issue, the clay is easily breakable after baking, no matter what I do. I did the EXACT same as you mentioned. Any luck with figuring this out? Thanks! -Annie

      @@andrearassbach5695 hello, no unfortunately I never did find the solution and I gave up... maybe one day I will revisit. I lost my mind trying.

    I hope this isn’t a silly question...do we just buy a ceramic tile from Lowe’s or Home Depot? Are there different types of ceramic tiles?

    If I’m using Fimo and Sculpey III combined and they each ask for different bake times/temperatures, how long should I bake it for? Fimo asks for 30 min at 230° F and 275° F for Sculpey III? I’m not sure what to do and I don’t want to ruin my earring cut outs!

    Thank you for your videos!!! Where did you purchase your tile to bake on? Also, what surface do you work on before baking? I have trouble transferring from my work surface to the baking surface. 🤦🏻‍♀️

      The advantage of the ceramic tile you can work on it AND bake on it.

    If mine is breaking. Do I need to lower the temp and up the cooking time?

    • @mrsk8383
      @mrsk8383 4 года назад

      never lower the temp! if you bake it at lower temps all the polymers will not meld together and you will risk breaking your pieces.

    Hi I am soo sorry but I had another query. What exactly should be the thickness of the earrings to prevent them from breaking?

      this is my problem as well. I have been using the number one setting on the clay machine. Even though it is the thickest setting, it still is not thick enough😭

    I had a package of old sculpey clay that I decided to use. Unfortunately some of the things I made broke. Could this be because the clay is older? The package was sealed in its packaging.

    I use ceramic tiles to help with air bubbles but I’m running into the problem with air bubbles not going away as I condition. I’ve rolled a premo no joke 50+ times. I also put it in my fridge. I CANT get the air bubbles out!!! Idk what else I could do??
