The truth about off-grid living

  • An off-grid cabin in the woods is the dream of a lot of people... but what is it really like to live in a tiny cabin with no running water and a house full of people?
    How hard is it really?
Is the off-grid dream worth it?
Join me for a conversation with Chad and Naomi Maynard who sold everything and left the trappings of modern life behind to chase that dream. We'll talk about what it's really like to live off grid with no running water, kids, goats, chickens, and pets in a small cabin in the deep woods of Upper Peninsula Michigan.

@Rob Kuster we have plenty of water and a creek that runs right past our cabin. There was a we’ll just outside the cabin at one point right on the other side of the spot we’re trying to drive one. Just thought that having it inside the cabin would be great! We did extensive research on the property before purchasing. Although I would never tell anyone that buying land sight unseen is a good idea. We got lucky.

It is so important for people to hear all of the things that go with a self reliant lifestyle. If anybody would say to me "I was living the lifestyle" I would correct them and say no I am working the lifestyle. It has been 30 years and we are still working the life style. It is well worth it but it is not easy. Thanks for sharing this.

I appreciate realistic videos like this very much. 🥰 So many people looking for the "easy" life, and think off-grid will be "easier"... it's not! It can actually be much, much harder than the job you leave behind. And although you can "afford" to lose a week of work from a financial standpoint, in other ways you can't afford to be sick at all (who is going to chop the wood or haul the water while you're bed-ridden?) But you're working for yourself, not someone else, so all the labor and rewards from it can be MUCH more satisfying. You really can't beat the feeling of self-reliance, but make no mistake... self-reliance is hard work!! 😊

This is a beautiful idea. I suggest you search your hacks on RUclips to get some idea making easier ways for water or temporary ways for maintaining .
A relative once used a 1500 gal. Tank to keep some water. Then with small pump she had enough. It's watching how much use is done through the monthly filling. Of course she had a filling place , assuming septic is in. It's carry drinking water and tank was for other things. It was mostly underground set. After time she finally got regular service.
She used treatment for a couple days when needed. Then that same water tank can keep animal care easier when done with home use.

Interesting to hear their input on living the off grid life. They really seem to love it and the four girls too! Wish we could've seen the inside.

Very good video, showing that the reality of homesteading or living off-grid is NOT glamorous. In many ways, you're making compromises so that you can live a different lifestyle, often working your butt off to do for yourself, instead of working to make money so you can pay someone else to do those things. I think there can be a different kind of compromise, where you're still a part of society, but not engulfed by it. To be truly off-grid, and thrive while doing so, takes a different level of commitment and perspective than most people have today. I know I'm not cut out for it, but aspects of it are very enticing and interesting.

Great video! We live off grid for 8 years now, moved from Amsterdam city to rural Sweden and every year there are adjustments. There is always work to do. Now we learned from your channel, the goats! They are so nice

I use "off grid" and "homesteader" in the same sentence! Hahaha! Mid-Michigan has been fun and we have been struggling for the last three years getting our homestead going. But are doing well enough. You guys are living the dream for sure! Keep up the good work!

    Brooke and 9252,
GREAT VIDEO!! I have been binge watching Brooke's and Dave's videos. I would LOVE to do this BUT.... when I met my husband he had never even picked up a screwdriver in his entire life, was just graduating college and to my dismay.... decided against going to law school. Lol🤣😭🤣😭🤣😭. So..... I don't think I will ever be able to do it:(. He just isn't any help in that department and I am 54. Too old to start now. Lol
He has never even been camping in his entire life. His parents just never were the outdoors type and so he missed out:(
I will just have to live vicariously through y'all for now!! But, I enjoy doing it so keep it coming!! I subscribed to 9252 also🌞🌞
I have 3 daughters and I cannot imagine living off grid with them AND homeschooling them when they were young!! Hats off to you Mama. You are killin' it💞💞💞.
You are giving them the most AMAZING life experiences and I can see how happy they truly are. Just AWESOME!!
Thanks for sharing and I look forward to y'alls next videos!!🌞

A cowboy joke for you. A young couple bought this 40 acre cut off out in ranching country. One day they were out hanging this beautifully done gate sign that read "Sunrise Ranch" in all the colors. This old cowboy was riding by and stopped to watch. Although he appreciated all he colors and the work, he was overheard chuckling to himself. The Lady asked , "What's so funny". The old fella just looked up. "Mrs." he said, "Out here a ranch is a cow operation big enough and far enough away from everybody else they have to keep their own tom cats".

I’m new to your channel, and I’m only working part time due to me being pregnant with our one and only miracle baby. Your channel has helped me mentally so much. I used to live in Alaska and I’ve been noticing as I get older how much I miss everything from there. I miss the cold winters, the blizzards, the way the Christmas lights shine off the glittering snow, log cabins and being stuck inside during bad snow storms. I miss all of it. We didn’t get much snow at all this year in Nevada, but boy, was it sure freezing cold! Felt like one of the coldest, driest winters here. I hope you’re having a beautiful day or night where you are, and thank you for giving me a slice of the wilderness to watch and be part of. Lots of love, Nicky ♥️

Good to see folks demonstrating the real difficulties (understatement) of this life style; particularly since the vast majority of “off grid living” videos paint a somewhat rosie and one sided view. City life, country life, on grid, off grid; the bottom line is that there ain’t no free lunch.
