    The Federation being the aggressors for once is a nice change of pace, it does show how militarised starfleet was in the Sulu Era and how many of its officers were spoiling for the fight which would never come. Neither side being completely responsible or completely innocent with the responsibility for the crisis makes it a mark on both powers that both probably want to forget, the being if there's anyone left to forget.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 года назад +19

      Yeah. I felt it was important that the federation had a portion of responsibility. There needs to be a reason why starfleet went from Militant like in the TMP era to what we see in TNG

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 I agree, Roddenberry may not have liked the Federation "sneaking about" like the Klingons and Romulans, but it makes sense that even they would at some point have tried their luck with cloaking devices. Personally i tend to agree with Admiral Pressman from the TNG episode "The Pegasus" on this.

      In fairness, we kinda see something similar between the Federation and Dominion in DS9. Plus, we're probably still in an era where more military minded personnel led Starfleet, before we get the more pacifistic Starfleet of TNG. The Tomed Incident might've been the trigger for the shift between the two "eras."

    • @venomgeekmedia9886

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 I mean this is not long after Khitomer, where Federation admirals were willing to attempt an assassination of the Federation President just to avoid signing a peace treaty with the Klingons and demilitarizing their fleets.
      There could be sympathizers of the assassins or even people who knew of or helped organize the attempt that were able to slip past any judicial investigations that are in positions of power. These people might be leading a more militant faction that sees "aggressive pacifism" as the only way to protect the Federation from the real war mongers of the Romulans.
      In there mind they are not being aggressive at all. Only protecting peace by preparing for war.

    To be perfectly honest, I always thought that the core reason of the Tomed Incident was that in the wake of the failure of the Transwarp program for the Excelsior class, Starfleet had been able to glean a great deal of information regarding higher order subspace physics and warp engine design from the technology developed for the quote unquote Great Experiment. Thereby Federation engineers and designers were able to develop a new miniaturized disposable warp propulsion system capable of being fitted to an essentially a stretched photon torpedo casing, creating a short interstellar range moderate warp factor capable strike weapon i.e., Space Tomahawk fitted with an outrageously high yield matter-antimatter warhead or Tri-cobalt device, coupled to the cloaking device equipped Mark-II Excelsior class Heavy Cruiser, now you have a proper Starfleet 'Boomer'.

    A thought regarding the Treaty of Algernon... Is it possible, that working along a different path from the Klingons and Romulans, Starfleet developed in the Excelsior II class, a Cloaking Device that the Romulans couldn't effectively counter.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886

    • @SPatrickRoss
      @SPatrickRoss 2 года назад

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 Yes, but that is an earlier model. Even more outdated than the type the Romulans gave the Klingons. Therefore, its possible and likely that Starfleet went down a different path developing the Cloaking Device. Possibly something the Romulans hadn't thought of. Some workaround do to the Federation not having the Romulan's understanding of Gravity manipulation.

    I have to echo that I somehow really like the idea of Starfleet and the Federation being instigators. Aside from games of one-upmanship, that the Romulans could play games with 3rd parties clearly coming and going with their blessing, and who knows what tomfoolery and black ops those unknown forces are doing being a major impetus for the Federation. Despite the peaceful end of the Federation and Klingon cold war, it is also clear that a destabilized Klingon Empire has only increased uncertainty from that direction as well.
    I can see a Starfleet that is frustrated at one hand, but also emboldened by its cold war victory over the Klingon Empire, to try and push for a similar outcome with the Romulans. Even if they were the ones to force the Romulans to make the decisive move. Strangely enough, by being more 'open', more 'research minded', and engaging in a blockade, the Romulans are using the Federation's playbook. Small wonder, in a way. The Federation and Starfleet have never been so militant and mobilized before in a time of peace.
