But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep and sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon."_

With the speed, strength, ferocity, and relentlessness that will not stop until the would be threat is pacified into alliance, shattered into submission, or extinguished from existence.
    May fate find pity on any foolhardy enough to reawaken the sleeping giant and fill us will a unyielding resolve.

    Also those pulse phasers on the Defiant, I read somewhere that the mechanism of operation was to delay phaser discharges in the matrix of the emitter for a few nanoseconds getting shorter on delay each time. This resulted in an "onion" layer effect with multiple energy layers being "stacked" in a single pulse. They were more effective as the phaser frequency could be rotated on these layers making a composite pulse to which the Borg would find it harder to fully adapt.

    The Voyager episode "message in a bottle" shows how powerful these ships really are.
    In that episode two defiant class and one Akira class engage and attack three D'deridex warbirds without hesitation.
    Also I know it's unpopular but I really liked the design of the prometheus minus that dumb multi vector assault mode. Like how these ships are products of the borg attack I have always seen the prometheus as a product of the dominion war.

      @raw6668 3 года назад +4

      Considering it usually takes a decade to design ships, its streaching it to say it was designed to fight the Borg, let alone the Dominion. Besides, I can see the multi vector assault mode come in handy against Borg targets simply split into three ships to attack a cube in several angles or be able to detach a portion to continue the attack as they only detach the portion caught in a tractor bream.

    • @Bitchslapper316
      @Bitchslapper316 3 года назад +6

      @@raw6668 I don't know where you are getting that 10 year estimate from, it's inaccurate. There was already a ship used and described on screen as being developed specifically to fight the borg, the defiant. It was in service at least 3 years before the prometheus.
      The project started after the events of best of both worlds which took place in 2366. The defiant is first shown on screen in the episode "the search" which takes place in 2371. We also know the ship was designed and constructed before Sisko even got stationed on DS9 (which was 2369) but was mothballed for various reasons. Going of those numbers it took them at the very most 5 years to design, complete and put the defiant in active service. Three years maximum if we use the time it was completed to the time it was mothballed.
      The prometheus was first seen in 2374, 4 years after the dominion destroyed the first galaxy class ship. It's perfectly plausible it was designed to combat the dominion, especially considering Starfleet R&D was in overdrive after the klingon war and the ongoing dominion war.

      @@Bitchslapper316
      You've not dealt with projects when it comes to desiging systems (ships and equipment)?
      I have experince in such area and I can tell you it is a long process that generally take a decade or more to see to furtation. To put in prospective, this is the usal procedure adopted by the US Military and don't see a reason it be different in Starfleet:
      1) Submitting a proposal
      2) Show a proff of concept (modeling and data to show its pheasaible)
      3) Review the proff of concept for approval or disproval.
      4) Design a full protype if approved with all subsystems (enginees, powerplans, weapons, est.) laid out, otherwise go back to Step 1
      5) Review the protype deisnged
      6) If approved, began building the protype
      7) Conduct testing on the protype
      8) Conduct a review of the protype several times through production.
      9) Refine any design flaws and go back to Step 3, possibly going back to Step 1 if deemed a failure.
      10) If approved, preform limited manfacture to test the system (ship or technology) in the field to prefect the design
      11) Preform the necessary teaks to the design
      12) Enter full production
      Its a long process that takes time as the US Air Force states all systems generall have a 2.5 to 20 years in its development cycle.
      One the show reflects as the Galaxy Class entered the design phase in 2350 and reached limited production in 2363. Meaning 13 years of from Step 3 to 9, possibly Step 2. The fact they had ships out and ready to fight the Borg in 5 to 7 years is amazing.

    • @Bitchslapper316
      @Bitchslapper316 3 года назад +9

      @@raw6668 This isn't 100% accurate even in the real world unless you work for Lockheed. I'll give you some real world examples. The Midway class carrier design was first conceived in 1940 and the first one entered service in 1945. Another example is the essex class carrier which was conceived in 1938 and first entered service in 1942 with 32 of them being built in under a decade.
      That is mostly irrelevant here though because we are talking about a science fiction future space navy that serves hundreds of planets with hundreds of billions of people. That and we already have a canonical in universe example of a new warship being designed, built, retrofit and put in service in under 5 years. That wasn't even in a wartime situation.

    • @raw6668
      @raw6668 3 года назад +2

      @@Bitchslapper316 No, but I also gave an example with the Galaxy Class following real life scenario as it took over a decade to design and build, and it was using technology already tried and true with only the Warp Core seems to be on the experimental design. Post Galaxy ships like the Defiant, Sovereign, Intrepid, Prometheus and such often used experimental new technology, which often caused delays. Along with being designed on a new hull design as well.
      Your examples are warships that were using technology that was not experimental and hull chesty design was similar to previous ships with the only major difference, maybe, is a difference in scale. The Midway was incorporating design improvements made to the Yorktown class, fixing flaws noticed with said carriers, and upscaling the vessel with a new engine.
      Plus, even with a large population, you still want to keep the design team relatively small for two few people means too many doubling up, but too many means too many people will argue or make mistakes in the design, creating delays.
      Like I said, to me it was amazing they got ships out so quickly, and proof of how advance they are. But it should take time and considering how much of the technology used on the Prometheus was experimental, it is likely that Prometheus was also part of the anti-Borg design, but took longer to design compared to those seen in the Battle of Sector 001.

    You forgot the battle scared. Captains like myself ( later promoted to admiral) who were literally blown to pieces at Wolf 359. It took the Borg to give me my mobility and Jean Luc Picard’s experience being de borged for us to learn how to use their tech. My unit during the Dominion war was Task Force Ghost. We were officers who fought the cardassians or Wolf 359 veterans. We built it around 6 ships of the Normandy Class ( a hybrid idea of the light brawler and heavy counter puncher) we ran Galaxy class warp cores in them to push em to the red line. We had a Sovereign class as our 7th the USS Endeavor, she gave us a powerful backup punch if we needed it. We fought a clandestine war again the dominion for nearly a year to slow them down. Operating as pirates we were a major problem, once home we were remarked and assembled into the 1st Starfleet rapid reaction unit ( which we renamed task force ghost). Our ships carry WW2 inspired markings ( Normandy features a shark mouth on her forward nose and D-Day invasion stripes on the nacelles we used a defiant as our hull form but increased in mass). We want them to know who we are, we want them to know we’ve all nearly or been dead, and above all else we want to make the Dominion fear us. Even Klingons want to fight with us as our aggressive tactics and angry nature draw admiration from them. Starfleet might not like us cause we don’t fall into the nice image but when you need some teeth to back up your threats, well that’s our job

    It occurs to me, the treaty of Algernon prevents the federation from developing and deploying stealth tech on starfleet ships.. but what about weapons? The transphasic device from the TNG episode "The Pegasus" could maybe deployed as part of a torpedo weapon system to bypass borg sensors, shields and hull. Effectively a high tech "bunker buster" type weapon. Just an theorycraft idea.

I was never a big fan if how they used the Defiant in DS9. It was overpowered and way outside of its Scope of Support. They used it as to much of a ship for all battles when it was a very specialized ship designed to be used as part of a battle group. Great work on this video.

Both ships were evenly matched, which is honestly crazy impressive considering the Excelsior is a 90yo design. It sort of explains why it's still Starfleet's main heavy cruiser. I really like the Defiant Class, it's as aggressive as a Klingon ship but with the tech of a Federation one. I couldn't imagine being happier as a commander with having so much firepower at my disposal and protection even without a cloaking device. It reminds me of the American PT-boats, they had absurd firepower for their size and protection by the end of the war and would use cut and run tactics all the time. I remember a veteran saying that a PT-boat had as much firepower as a destroyer but was three times as fast. That impressive for something that was basically a speed boat.

It's why think about the Defiant Class in the same way, it's a Destroyer, not an escort, it has way more firepower than a Galaxy Class, I'd like to see a battle were a full strength Defiant Class goes off on a Sovereign Class, I suspect that it would go in favour of the harder to hit smaller ship.

    7:10 I have to disagree. Complimenting each other is the same thing as relying on one another. You got Battleships, Carriers, cruisers, frigates, and destroyers. Battleships and Carriers not having escorts to protect it from being ambush is just one big juicy ambush target for enemy ships. Crusiers are multipurpose ships that can go so far without escorts, but usually they are flanked with destroyers to help look out for it.
    It's funny how old wet Navy tactics and doctrine could have actually helped Starfleet mitigate their combat losses. Instead, we just have to rely on hero ships with heavy shields and Polycarbonate Layered Occlusive Tritanium Armor.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  3 года назад +6

      i perhaps should have been more specific. in terms of not relying what i meant was that no single class was a one trick pony. and shared certain roles so for example Quantum torpedoes were carried by Defiant, Akira, and Sovereign so that even if one was singled out the threat of a quantum torpedo remains.

    Great work as always Venom.
    Same with your Wolf 359 piece. It wasn't so much as the defeat itself it was the way Star Fleet was defeat. No one knows how big Star Fleet was at this point but say 400-500 vessels, they suffered 8-10 % losses in as many minutes. The Miranda, Excelsior, and Constellation which still made up the major of the Fleet with type 7- 8 phasers and Mark 5-6 torps were unholy missed matched versus the Borg. So basically no tactical advancement in 80 years. Other ship (the kit bash fleet) were only marginal improvements over them. Leaving Ambassador, New Orleans, Nebula and Galaxy remaining to have a chance against and superior foe.
    So Star Fleet just suffered 10 % losses and the remaining 80 % of the Fleet was combat ineffective. When Picard in "Peak Performance" says a Captain tactical abilities were only a small portion of his or her make up it was like WTF did you just say. And realign on 360 degree weapon coverage and not using proper tactics and individual and or battle group maneuvering and support just showed how arrogant and lazy Star Fleet had became when engaging adversaries in combat.
    All of the new ships produced in response to Wolf 359 were designed to work together as fleet and kick ass with there weapons in the forward face arch of fire
    Hope to see and individual break down of these ships from yourself in the near future Great work again!!!!

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  3 года назад

      yeah it was probably about 400 ships so 40 is a sizable chunk. the fleet at wolf 359 is about 3 tiers, 1st rate is ships like the nebula and challenger, 2nd are ships like Springfield and Cheyenne, 3rd rate are ships like the miranda. so i wouldn't say 80% more like 60%-50% are genuinely out of date 23rd century designs. but they could get away with it given the poor state of the klingons and cardassians.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  3 года назад

      because those torpedoes would have had to be carried aboard the shuttle and the shuttle escape transporter couldn't handle that kind of load. + the subspace field would probably stop the transporting of anything non organic.

    At Wolf 359, 11,237 Starfleet officers died in the line of duty. J.P. Hanson was a fool how he could take Oberth-class and Constitution-class spaceships into battle. The Oberth-class only has one weak phaser bank to hunt down asteroids for research purposes, and the Constitution-class was long obsolete. In the pilot of DS9, you can see the USS Bonestell Oberth-class exploding at Wolf 359. Captain Janeway commanded the Bonestell before Voyager, so it can be assumed that she was at Wolf 359.

The federation had become pretty docile as they had basically had no real threat. The Klingons were allies, the Romulans were in exile, the Cardasians were underequiped, truth be be told the federation was the dominate power in the Alpha Quadrant. This really mirrors the USA of the 90's where we had small scale encounters but nothing resembling full scale war. Then the Borg come strolling along and hand the federation a massive suprise left hook that knocks it to the ground. Starfleet after starts to go all in on its more military style ships, no longer exploration cruisers like the Galaxy class, but full on battleships like the Defiant and Sovereign classes and basically goes into a state of constant vigilance and rapid defense...basically the US in a post 9/11 world. I know alot of people hate shows like DS9 which sort of revel in this attitude, as it betrays Gene eutopa ideas, but frankly I think the Roddenberry ideals kind of needed to be kicked in the balls just to be brought back into realistic alignment as season 1&2 of TNG radiated so much smug arrogance that the characters were barely human and more walking annoying liberal stereotypes.

      yeah so Lore Reloaded argues that Sisko used the Defiant as a form of Saber Rattling to the dominion which isn't a very 'federation' approach but its something they learned from the Cardassian Border wars, because they didn't send their best so the cardassians were able to fight them with relative parity. by showing up with the defiant Sisko was showing the Stick he could beat them with. and in fairness the Enterprise D was very much the same, just a little more subtle.

    The Defiant needed to be 10 times its size .. It should have been as big as a Galaxy class starship .. They really should built ships the size of the USS Vengeance, commanded by Admiral Marcus.. They could incorporate much larger power generators to power more powerful weapons and shields

    (Romulans) "we use quantum singularities as a power source we are so advanced" (Federation) "Neat, we loaded them into torpedoes"😎
