      Fascinated by the Nova!
      Interestingly enough, I just discovered the Ingram variant of the Excelsior, which would make a great foil for the Nova, with its much larger shuttle bays, and uprated armament including mega-phasers! What a fight that would be!

  • @ISAF_Ace
    @ISAF_Ace 2 года назад +11

    Like the dreadnoughts of old, the Nova never saw the battle or even the war it was meant for. But it set the line that a battleship must cross to induce fear and to doom any ship that would oppose it alone. It was the beginning of Romulan battleship doctrine, a doctrine which would shape the wars of the future. The Nova was truly a historic and frightening ship, a landmark in the history of the alpha quadrant. Even with carriers starting to turn the tide once again in the 24th century , the Nova, and the battleships it gave rise too, will always be remembered as the rulers of the void.

    Whenever it decloaks, it honors its namesake, shinning bright like a nova, radiating Romulan might.
    It's cool to finally see the return of "Wings of Romulans" and with quite the bang (or "nova"). The new additions of combat animations were cool, and you really added to those "Rs" with the Tarkan accent.

      With that ugly Duck cramping their style I can see why the Romulans was happy to trade them in on the more Orion chick magnet D'Deridex that had a more cooler bad boy look ready for TV and the big screen. The Romulans showed to the Klingons and Starfleet how strong they are to be seen in such a ship and still hold their heads up. The Romulans and their big pointed ears are truly amazing people and buried the Nova class in their passed never to be seen in again. LOL.

    I like the intermediate power system you came up for the Nova, between the purely fusion powered ships from the earth/romulan war all they way until the simple impulse BoP, and the singularity cores that probably debuted on the d'deridex. With the gravimetric and magnetic fields controlling the reaction instead of dilithium crystals doing it passively, it sounds like an overbuilt fusion reactor that's got antimatter piped into it. Probably expends a tremendous amount of energy just to operate as well, leading to the huge fuel consumption you mentioned, and the need of the secondary power system for when huge, high warp power draws isn't needed. At least the romulans can now generate enough power to get a ship up to warp 8+. This power system probably originated on that Thrai Dreadnought, something that large and long range would have needed it.
    While the nova's heavy weapons are impressive, the disruper coverage seems merely sufficient to cover all firing arcs, while an excelsior has 4 to 6 phaser turrets covering every angle, and would be a better brawler. But utilizing a cloaking ambush with all plasma torpedos ready, your Nova could probably destroy even an excelsior in a single attack run.
    Clearly, the Nova's existence is an unprecedented escalation that necessitates an arms race, and if the federation's latest battleship can be picked off with a single alpha strike, the excelsior might need to go back to the drawing board again, and an unorthodox countermeasures may be required...

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 года назад +2

      possibly. especially as you suggest that the fusion and Antimatter reactors are essentially the same system. they might have experimented with injecting antimatter into the Thrai's reactor.
      After refits the Nova has 14 disruptors the same as the excelsiors phaser Complement.
      And as it turns out they went with the Unorthodox Countermeasure.

    • @dontdrunkimshoot8220
      @dontdrunkimshoot8220 2 года назад +1

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 The excelsior had 10 dual banks on the saucer, 4 single banks ventral on the secondary hull, and a few other debatably canon single banks, one between the warp nacelle on the pylon mount, 2 above the aft shuttle bay, and one dorsal by the impulse engines. A total of between 24 and 28 phaser hardpoints. Even a connie refit had 18 phaser hardpoints. Still gotta give the edge to federation ships in closer range light gun DPS.
      if a follow up vid is coming about the enterprise B refit type, and its unorthidox countermeasure, id emphasize just how overbuilt its secondary power system was as well, with so many impulse engines and the associated fusion reactors. It was probably the first ship type (since federation ships went to a warp core powers everything standard) able to operate with no loss of combat performance if the warp core went offline during a battle. A feat not duplicated until the sovereign class, where the E-E showed this off in its battle with the scimitar, until the ship just completely ran out of gas.

Enterprise NCC-1701 crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone to steal a Romulan Cloaking Device which was successful and the Enterprise escaped back into Federation space with the use of the cloaking device.

    Simply incredible work you’ve done here Venom. In the past month, you’ve turned the Romulans in the motion picture era from a complete continuity chasm into perhaps one of the most interesting topics of trek! And the best part, is that as far as Beta Canon stuff goes, this really doesn’t have much in the way of errors. If anything, it makes the events of “Balance of Terror” all the more impactful. It RECONTEXTUALIZES what’s really at stake in that episode, and the Nova itself is basically a direct result of Kirk’s victory. There’s so much to unpack here, and I can’t wait to see how you handle the Tohmed incident (it’s gonna be my first time viewing about the incident, I haven’t read any of the novel depictions).
    Here’s wishing that these three new episodes get all the recognition they deserve.

      even though i like venom geek media style and his breakdowns i cannot ask him to do early empire content from star wars with the same level of Detail because even though he has now a romulan legion of supporters he is still just one guy ,better have other people look at him and do Something similar a breakdown of the clone wars would be nice that actually shows the real campaigns of the clone wars we barely see especially in TCW where it is reduced to a few skirmishes and no sense of the war progression. things like the foerest campaig, Operation durges lance or the outer rim sieges are completely ignored because the main characters were not there but these battles and campaigns are very crucial in the war progression.

I get that Star Trek is your passion, but I think similarly-styled videos in settings like Babylon 5, Space Battleship Yamato, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes would be really cool and maybe expand the channel (since you don't get enough exposure imo). A Battlespace series for the Dilgar War in B5 or the Galactic Empire/Free Planet Alliance war in Legend of the Galactic Heroes would put a huge smile on this scifi nerd's face.

    I think its interesting that it looks like the Thrai-Class is another direct ancestor of the D'Deridex, in fact I would go so far as to call the Thrai the first Warbird. I also like the point that, up till then, Romulan ship design had been very anonymous, indeed earlier ship designs had a very alien, very aquatic look to them often resembling a giant squid in space. This made sense, since the Romulans had gone to great lengths to keep as much about themselves secret from the other races, to the point that no one outside the empire actually knew what the Romulans even looked like until the Balance of Terror incident.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 года назад +1

      i think it was also tied to different artistic movements, the romulans are a very Aeasthetically minded people. i imagine in the 22nd century they were all about Aquatic Styles of art, that would even explain the Drone. then in the 23rd its all Modernist, with jet white and orange, and simple cruved shapes, then in the 80s the anima avis or Romantic movement comes in, and so on an so fourth.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 2 года назад +1

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 I still think that, by the 2280's, much of the veil of mystery about the Romulans had lifted, the Federation more or less know who and what the Romulans were now, so now they felt more free to indulge that artistic aspect. They aren't hiding their true nature any more, they are proclaiming to the galaxy "We are the Sons and Daughters of Romulus. Fears us and bow to us!"

      @@weldonwin not as much as you'd expect. the two still know relatively little about one another by TNG. and remember romulan society is quite insular, generally you don't see them unless they want you to. in which case concealing their identity is almost counter to that purpose.

    What Romulan battleships lack in quantity they make up for in quality and sheer power.
    Novas are impressively poweerful and versatile ships, capable of handling two of any other Alpha quadrant ships of their era at once, and are frighteningly effective siege platforms once space-superiority has been achieved.
    I respect the Nova a whole lot more than the D'Deridex, even if the latter is vastly more recognizable and obviously much more powerful, because the Nova was truly innovative for her time and marked one of the few instances where the Romulan Star Empire decisively outpaced both the Klingons and Federation in military development.
    As the 24th century moved onward, Novas served with grace and distinction effectively deterring Federation aggression away from Romulan borders, while the D'Deridexes would show just how lax the Romulan Empire would become once put into real fleet combat action during the Dominion War.
    Unsurprisingly, the successor for the D'Deridex was far more economical and centered around fleet efficiency rather than being the singularly biggest ship in the Alpha quadrant, and heavily drew upon inspiration from the Novas.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 года назад +2

      Outpaced? If we are being fair it's more that it "Out-Gunned" it's counterparts. It's slower than an excelsior. And would probably be matched by the klingon D8 if it had happened. But then praxis happened which was a double edged sword for the romulans.

    • @atmosdwagon4656
      @atmosdwagon4656 2 года назад +1

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 By "outpaced" I meant technologically, not in terms of pure speed.
      If Star Trek follows real world logic to any degree, it took a lot of time and resources for major powers to go from producing ironclads to dreadnoughts.
      The pace of development is measured on those milestones.
      For example, Spain went from being premier world explorers and a major naval power to a has-been after a single war with the United States, once it became incapable of keeping pace in warship design and production.
      The Romulans may have averted war with the Federation entirely by producing the Nova when they did, and why outside of a few incidents peace would largely endure across the Alpha quadrant until the Dominion (and technically the Borg) arrived.
