    I hope the numerous people commenting "there are no g forces in space" are just very young and haven't taken a basic high school physics course yet... I really do. Thre most cringy are those that double down when someone tries to educate them.

      Isn't that the whole point of inertial dampners and warp bubbles? (The latter also for FTL pockets) Basically to argue away G-forces? Other sci-fi does the same thing, with their own flare. I think Star Wars ships technically use repulser technology to cancel out G-forces.
      So I guess it depends on what one means by "no g forces in space"...per Einstein, acceleration and gravity are indistinguishable, so if you have an acceleration force in direct opposition to gravitational force, they can cancel out.
      ...then again, when most people say "G-forces", they aren't talking about gravity anyway (even if they think they are), it's just ANY acceleration converted into what that would be like as a multiple/fraction of sea level Earth gravity. In which case we're just looking at one acceleration/deceleration (force; F = ma -> a = F/m) vs a compensating technology produced acceleration/force opposing it.

    A large number of small ships is probably more economically efficient than a small number of large ships. However, if the small ships can't collectively penetrate the large ships shield, then the large ship wins. At least this was the logic of the battle system from the game "Astro Empires."

      Plz, the Dominion combat tactic was wiping the Federation most advance warships into stats. The Defiant was protected by plot armor and Romulan cloaking technology, even Capt. Sisko wasn't risking the Defiant on Klington cloaking tech.

      @@TwiceStruck FYI the defiant was using Romulan clocking tech... Yes initially the Dominion was wiping the floor with Starfleet older ships not until they rev up production of the akira, steamrunner, sovereign, and upgrades to the Galaxy and Excelsior class. Also they change tactics maxing their newer and older ships. Yes Defiant did have plot armor but it is the main ship and it did get destroyed once.

    I feel that the D'deridex class and all Romulan ships for that matter were extremely over rated as war ships. From everything I've seen (at least on screen canon) they have way more bark than bite. Let's take the D'deridex class, it was designed as a massive battleship and at the end if the day it was roughly on par with the galaxy class which was basically a luxury cruise liner with shields and some weapons. When that same class came up against actual federation warships with even numbers, even just light cruisers and frigates (the defiant and Akira class) they didn't stand a chance.

    Klingon ships can just turn as they manouvre to keep their enteire forward weapons array facing their target to keep firing while still moving fast. They also have aft torpedoes usually. Even the b rell can do this. Even the old designs like b rells and k vorts are still effective in the dominion war because they are just guns armor and engines. Good vid as always though man. • @NavyDave219
      @NavyDave219 5 лет назад +2

      G-forces do occur in space. There is a reason why ships in the Star Trek universe have structural integrity force fields that literally help the ship from breaking apart while maneuvering. Even as slow as our NASA spacecraft move if not calculated correctly they can be pulled apart by g-forces. Now consider the size and speeds of these fictional ships. Even then there is a reason the larger more cumbersome ships don't maneuver as fast.

    Why did the D'Deridex do as badly as Miranda's in the Dominion war?

    • @bargainbin6162
      @bargainbin6162 3 года назад +1

      Well their targeting systems couldn't track so many ships at once and the Dominion has tens of thousands of ships. They'll usually have fleets larger than the Alpha Quadrant's powers so when tracking so many ships, the weapons will fire inaccurately and it doesn't possess the weapons to combat fighters.
      It's maneuverability didn't grant it any favors and the exposed engine nacelles would make it a sitting duck.

    • @Freddie1980
      @Freddie1980 2 года назад

      Against the smaller attack ships it's size and lack of sophisticated targeting sensors meant it would quickly find itself overwhelmed (think of it was a pack of lions working together to kill a single elephant). Against the battle cruisers the D'Deridex lacked the speed and maneuverability and the battle cruisers could simple keep out of range or attack when they a position that was favorable and up against the battle ships it was simply out gunned. At the end of the day the D'Deridex whilst it looked impressive in person and on paper it's sensors, defense systems and warp engines were poor compared to it's contemporaries and as result performed poorly in large scale combat. It should be noted that although in combat it struggled against more sophisticated ships it was far from useless, it's weapon systems still packed a punch (plasma torpedoes especially) and it's large size made it useful for sending huge amounts of troops and supplies to combat areas

    D'Deridex was under powered, slow and lumbering. Without a cloak it was basically a huge target. And with Federation sensors they weren't as stealthy as hoped. I guess against an Ambassador Class they'd be terrifying. Against a Galaxy Class not so much. They never engaged a Galaxy Class and the Galaxy Class stood up to the Dominion ships better than the D'Deridex did. If the Romulans started a war breaking the Treaty of Algeron within a few months Federation ships would be phased cloaked and the Klingons wouldn't sit on the side lines. Imagine a Sovereign class or a Phoenix class with phased cloaking. Even a Luna Class with phased Cloaks would be unstoppable.

  • @atmosdwagon4656
    @atmosdwagon4656 2 года назад +1

    2:30 Ehhh...technically correct, but not really. The issue lies in concentration. The Klingon Vorcha class ships might lack weapons coverage, but their "limited barrage" as you put it, is withering. The D'Deridex only has "360 degrees of fire" for a tiny handful of its weapons at any given time save for those mounted on its "head" and the fuselage weapons bays.
    These weapon mounts account for well over half of its total projected firepower, and nearly all of them can only fire in the frontal 180 degree arc, and at a declination of maybe 90 degrees. (usually less; especially in the case of the disruptors)
    The result is a ship that has no more effective "360 degree" firepower than any Federation ship it was expected to engage in its time, and only slightly more capable than the heavier Klingon ships in standoff engagements. But in a Cold War/Peacetime skirmishing role, its large, fearsome appearance and cloak would ensure it a terrifying reputation that belies its true (overstated) capabilities, and that is exactly how the Romulans operate: Misdirection and bluffs with just enough real force behind their actions to make everyone think twice about challenging them.
    If it came down to a 1vs1 against a Galaxy class with capable tactics, I have little doubt that the Galaxy class would win in any engagement but a well-designed cloak-ambush. Despite being physically smaller, the Galaxy has superior shields, faster engines (both warp and impulse) and, ironically, far better sustained firepower through its phasers.
    Phasers are generally stated to be more effective vs shields than Disruptors, and the Galaxy mounts a very heavy battery of them across its hull.
    The D'Deridex would need to keep the Galaxy "pointed" for its forward batteries in order to win, and win quickly it must at that. The longer the battle goes on, the greater the advantage for the Galaxy class. If the Galaxy manages to maneuver above, below or behind the D'Deridex, it will wear down the Warbird's shields with its more-effective phasers, and once that's done, just a few shots to the Warbird's power or engines will ensure its destruction, as it cannot outrun a Galaxy, and cannot turn to outgun it at that point.)
    But don't take my word for it; we saw the Warbirds underperform horrifically vs the Dominion fleets even against much smaller ships where its vaunted "360 degrees of fire" availed it nothing. In the end, the Romulans built new battleships because the spell of the D'Deridex was broken before all who witnessed it in real fleet action.
    Even after the Dominion War, while the D'Deridex was being retired, the Federation was still churning out updated Galaxy class ships despite Sovereigns and newer 5th generation ships moving in to replace the 4th gen fleets (generations being relative to the flaghip. The Enterprise-D is a Galaxy Class, which would be 4th generation. Enterprise-E is a Sovereign class, so that would be 5th, etc).
    It would also explain why in nearly every instance where we saw the potential for a fight between the Enterprise-D and a D'Deridex Warbird, the Romulans always brought two or more, or otherwise rigged the engagement by other means to dissuade direct confrontation. Romulans aren't stupid; and they knew what their craft were designed to do and what they were capable of.

    • @bcn1gh7h4wk

      it's a D'Deridex attempt.
      this is one of the early fully-Romulan vessels after the wave of Klingon-Romulan designs (2270-2300)
      it was one of the first Romulan ships to use disruptor beams in addition to cannons and torpedoes, which were then fitted to the D'Deridex.
      I modelled and programmed ships for Star Trek Bridge Commander, and when working with lots of 3D models and virtually infinite resources and flying space, you start spotting patterns, like you say, the engines, the hull, the weapon mounts and the deck arrangement, it's less complex than the D'Deridex, but more (and bigger too) than the Firehawk or the Venator.
      when you have all the models lined up in front of you, you can easily arrange them by similarities, and the pattern quickly shows up.
      there's no way that this thing has 1600 torpedoes! even the largest battleship can only fit 200-300 torpedoes.
      that would mean that one ship like this can outgun a starbase three times over, while having itself 1/10th of the armor.... that's one hell of a glass cannon, for a late 24th century ship!
