Your last segment about working vs. living: the FUNDAMENTAL reason why I retired at the age of 39. Never read that book you mentioned but the no. 1 key point you talked about has ALWAYS been a no brainer to me. And the kicker: I've given up trying to explain myself to all my friends and family because they are simply part of the mindless masses and society.
PS I don't bludge off the government just manufactured my life in such a way to not need all that much etc etc

Cool.😊 The camera tend to move when you press the shutter button, one way or the other, so I just use the timer and try to hold the camera steady as much as I can.

A common thread running through a lot of your content sir - taking the time to park the world and concentrate on you. Lovely light where you were - my kind of conditions - and absolutely handheld is the way to go. Btw, the breathe out thing was something I learned back in my air rifle shooting days. Something to do with if you breathe in and hold it then your muscles are tensed and eventually will start to tremble. Stay safe and well sir.

Oh, yes. You just made me realise that’s where I learned it, too. I shot my first rifle when I was 3 years old, with the barrel supported through the triangle handle of my dad’s camping spade (which he still owns). But I think it’s when I got my Daisy BB gun that I learned that breathing technique. Memories! My last two outings were shot completely handheld, and they were both so relaxing and enjoyable. James Popsys abhors tripods, and his images are gorgeous. I hope you’re well, mate. It’s hard sometimes, but we owe it to ourselves to enjoy this brief life.

…he Peter, just flicking through some of your videos and I want to say that I definitely like your straight forward, down to earth reviews a lot!👍 Guess I need advice too: I shoot R5 and R6 and just sold my EF100/400 II for an RF100/400 (which I haven’t purchased but aimed to do next week) plus spare cash. I was also driven by your enthusiasm about the RF100/400, the weight diff and the sharpness. Now this…! You did sell it and ordered the RF100/500 instead….😮 As I can afford either lens, it would be great to receive some guidance/first hand experience, comparing these two, helping me to pull the trigger…. 🙏

Thanks a lot mate - I appreciate it. The RF 100-400 is way better than everyone expected. Sure, it’s not weather sealed, and it’s slower than the 100-500, but it fast, light, and very sharp. I must admit, I was torn, but since I was selling three lenses, I decided the weight penalty would be nil. I shoot most of my images at the long end, so I decided to spoil myself and get that extra 100mm of reach. I don’t like how heavy it is, but it came in very useful this weekend whale watching off the NSW south coast. At the end of the day, I think I succumbed to my old mantra of, “Buy the best you can afford.”

Getting out and away from the office or the house every so often is super important.
Brenna and I took the RV out and stayed overnight on a fruit ranch only 18KM away from home. But the energy there on the ranch, along with the stars seen as a result of being outside the city lights. We had a master grower available who taught us how to determine if a peach or apple was ready to be picked. We were able to experience the taste of naturally grown fruit seconds from it being removed from a tree.
Such a treat and welcome change from the office.

Nice to see you back Peter. Some very pertinent comments. Tomorrow is not promised. Today is a gift so use it wisely and live to the fullest. I fully understand where you are coming from with the heavy backpack full of lenses. A number of years ago it got to the point that every time I went out I would come home and spend the next few days in pain with my back. I got rid of my Canon kit and went to micro four thirds. It is much lighter and my 14-150mm (28-300mm FF) is on my camera most of the time. Periodically I change it out for a very tiny prime and use one camera one lens.

Good stuff, Peter. You're going to love the 100-500mm, I'm sure I don't even need to tell you. The EF 100-400mm was brilliant, and I would say the 100-500mm is better in every way. Great AF, great IS, focuses close enough to be useful for semi-macro from a distance. I really do love mine! I wish it were a little faster at the long end aperture-wise, but that would surely make it bigger/heavier, so it's a trade I'm happy with (especially with the high ISOs we can use these days). Looking forward to see what you do with it!

Thanks for the reminder about the breathing since I do mostly handheld. I worked 4-10's at the end of my career and it made a big difference. I recently had a health scare and it was pause for reflection on life for sure! You are ahead of the life's transitions game!

I dumped my backpack. I now use a cotton carrier chest mount, camera an 70-300L. In lowe pro belt pack lens case 24-70. Pouch for 70-300. Cargo pants for filters and batteries. Nothing goes on back anymore. Takes a couple seconds to switch lenses.

One time I was driving a back country muddy and somewhat flooded road in my 4x4, assuming there was solid ground under the big puddles/flooded areas. Nope. I drove into a puddle and the bottom dropped out. Took all day to recover. Agree completely about our camera's having the benefit of getting us out in nature. I just retired. So, I am no longer a slave to my ambition. I had to let that go. Not easy. Deep down I wanted to let it go. I have often worried that I missed my calling and I should have devoted myself to music and photography,. I don't know. Yes, life is short. Oh, this is tinged with so many of my own feelings. I also regret pursuing my ambitions a bit too much, when perhaps I'd have been better served sticking with what excited me and satisfied my creative needs. I was already a pro photographer and journalist in the automotive space (heaven for someone like me), but dropped it for more money. Stupid. Sure, I picked up some trinkets along the way, but was the stress and anxiety (and the trinkets themselves) worth it...? I don't think so. And like you, I'm fascinated with the idea of creating music. I bought a Kawai piano years ago, but have hardly touched it. So much work to do; so little time. I'm glad you're enjoying your life, now, Robert. Looks like it's time for a midlife reinvention.

I don’t recall, and I’m too lazy to watch it all again, but probably yes. If I’m shooting with a 100-500 or 100-400, I usually aim for 1/250 for handholding. The location is Horans Track, overlooking Strath Creek, here in Victoria. 👍
