Ronnie Van Zant loved Merle. Ronnie was a country singer , but he was fronting a southern rock band. I could see Merle singing some Lynyrd Skynyrd songs just as well as I could see Ronnie singing some of Merle’s . This is the perfect example. I love both versions.
I think if the plane crash hadn't occurred, they might've morphed into a country band at some point, given the fresh blood and unreal talent Gaines injected into the band with his arrival. I'm a guitarist, and you can fake the blues if you're only "ok"...but you can't fake those kind of Danny Gatton/Albert Lee licks up and down the fretboard unless you're "top level"!
I'm goin' to ride this train Lord until I find out What Jimmie Rogers and the Hag was all about See I play this rock n roll and I think that's fine But I want to go back a little further in time
Oh yes go go go Merle that is countrysong and countrymusic blues musical instruments perfects artists...thanks for all and dont forget I love you forever unforgettable beautifull man RIP with my loveheart and big admiration for your family ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏 (2023/03/14) ❤️
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days.
Love this song!! Never new Merle wrote it. Glad he gave Skynyrd a shout out at the start. They sure don't make them like the use too!! 58 yrs old and still trying to live this Honky Tonk life😂
Agree with you Sarah 100% on both Synyrd and Garth.. Merle is the best there ever was or ever will be. Sorry Johnny Cash fans; but Merle is the no. 1 guy, ever. He is a professional singer, writer, musician, and imitator; and I don't know of anyone else who can do it all the best!
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days.
As well as performing a version of Honky Tonk Night Time Man on the Street Survivors album, Ronnie Van Zant recorded another version of this song using the same tune but using his own lyrics. Ronnie's rewritten version is called "Jacksonville Kid" and appears on the deluxe version of the Street Survivors album released in 2008. Pretty sure you can also find it here on RUclips. Perhaps the most significant thing about it is that it is thought to be the last recording Ronnie ever made.
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days.
Man Great Players , but I’ve got to say my all time favorite version of the Strangers was from 1977 - 1984 to me no one could touch Roy Nichols but that time period as far as his live band is probably my favorite. With that said Merle always had a phenomenal band until he died ending with probably one of the absolute best lead guitar players his son , what a Amazing Career , Amazing Voice , & Amazing song writer !! I found out at a early age & young musician why he was my grandfather’s favorite & it quickly turned it to my favorite. Now almost 30 years later for me & my Grandfathers been long gone but the poet for the Common man is still my all time favorite!!!
Merle Haggard was born April 6 1937 He died 79 years later on his birthday. He was born on a Tuesday. This song song was also released on a Tuesday. 1973 Every Lynyrd Skynyrd album featuring Ronnie Van Zant, was released on a Monday. But every Lynyrd Skynyrd, studio Album featuring Johnny Van Zant, was released on a Tuesday. Allen Collins, died on a Tuesday in 1990 Leonard Skinner, The school teacher who the band got their name from died on a Tuesday. Gary Rossington, born on a Tuesday in 1951. He's also the one who wrote Simple Man. He wore a cross around his neck in his later years, and he died on Sunday.
Ronnie had ever album Merle ever made. That's the reason they did the song. Allen Collins didn't want to do but it was Ronnie's band and Steve Gaines picked JUST LIKE ROY...:)
Norm Hamlet, dobro/steel, Clint Strong, lead, Gary Church, trombone/coronet, Don Markham, trumpet/sax, Biff Adam, drums, Bonnie Owens, harmony, Bobby Wayne, bass, Jimmy Belkin, fiddle, and that would be me, Mark Yeary, piano
Merle Haggard R.I.P you will forever live on and I will forever pick your music and sing it as long as I am able to play and sing.. I hope to for another 30 or 40 years ,, I agree with Ed Coppenger......I think Skynyrd did you Proud!! I know Ronnie Van Zant was a big fan of yours an Jimmy Rodger's... You will be missed Hag but never will you be forgotten...................
+James Rockford I first heard Skynyrd's version and really liked it... as I'm a huge LS fan to begin with. Then I saw that Merle Haggard wrote the tune. I have a connection to the song as I am a bit of a "night owl" by nature. So...who is the "sounds like Roy" referring to? I say Roy Clark.
Merle and Ronnie were supposed to do a duet, then the unthinkable happened. And in a interview with Gene Odom (RVS childhood friend and later on security for Lynyrd Skynyrd band ) had said the last song Ronnie Van Zant heard was Merle singing rambling fever. pilot said trouble, and Gene turned off the cassette player.
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days.
Guitar: Clint Strong, Fiddle: Jimmy Belkin, Dobro&Steel Guitar: Norman Hamlet, Drums: Biff Adams, don't know the bass player unless its Fuzzy Owens. Bonnie Owens is the background vocalist. If you really want to hear Clint Strong play, look up "friend in California", or "cold war", both by Merle Haggard.
Who is young guitar player ? Where was Roy Nichols and what year was this show? I love reading history of musicians like Merle , individuals in his band , Ronnie Van Zant , and rest of pre plane crash band. Wish music being made today was real like then.
Check out the version Skynyrd did based on this song called Jacksonville kid it was an unreleased track that they then released on the anniversary of street survivors
Clint Strong, jazz master. Started touring under his mentor Howard Roberts at age 9, toured all around the world at that young age. He is currently recording playing in ft worth, also was college professor at U Nev Reno and U Tx at Denton
That's what I thought too...I think in the LS song, Ronnie does mean Roy Nichols, but going by the Haggard video, it looks like Nichols was more of a slide/pedal steel player (?) while Clint Strong is the one actually playing most like how Steve Gaines plays on Skynyrd's cover of it. Could be that Ronnie didn't know that, and assumed Nichols covered all the "guitar bases"....after all, he wasn't a guitarist himself
This was 1987, after Roy had retired for health issues. Clint mentored and shared stage with Roy when he 1st started with Merle in 83-84. Norm Hamlet was Merles Pedal steel/dobro player and band leader from 1967 til the end....2016
Clint Strong is definitely a great guitar player...but "this" tune was a "Roy Nichols Masterpiece"...and Clint should have stayed true to Roy's great work on this song. It isn't as though Clint isn't capable,...he is MORE than capable.

Ronnie was in a league of his own RIP ❤️
I'm goin' to ride this train Lord until I find out
What Jimmie Rogers and the Hag was all about
See I play this rock n roll and I think that's fine
But I want to go back a little further in time
Kinda heart warming in way.
A real Skynyrd fan!
nobody can or could pick "just like Roy" he was my dad and there is none other like him
Roy Clarke was your Dad Nicholas64 ? Everyone already knows but your Dad was/is a legend and i loved seeing him playing ! Cheers
He's talking about Roy Nichols, Merle's long time guitarist, not Roy Clark
Isn't that the truth? Mr. Nichols was one of the classiest and most tasteful guitar players ever.
when Lynyrd Skynyrd covered this song, Ronnie told Gary that his guitar "sounds like Roy" this is the guy he was talking about, right, Nicholsd64?
Hard to believe people still think Ronnie was talking about Roy Clark...
The mighty Merle Haggard kids this is real country music
Ronnie Van Zant loved Merle Haggard's music
Ronnie was a musical genius and him liking Merle proves it
I lived the Honky Tonk life for 10 years..Great memories. I received a doctorate.
That's what you call real music with real Talent absolutely the best
The fella playing the brown Les Paul made me shout, "OH DUDE!"
Oh yes go go go Merle that is countrysong and countrymusic blues musical instruments perfects artists...thanks for all and dont forget I love you forever unforgettable beautifull man RIP with my loveheart and big admiration for your family ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏
(2023/03/14) ❤️
Merle can sing any type of music--gospel, rock, blues and country and do them all justice!! "HAG" was the real deal!!!
l agree with you, indeed Merle Haggard is a great and talented artist who's songs never goes out of style,he's one of my favorites artist, he's songs still and always heals the Soul, I pray God gives you lot of beautiful days.
This is one of my favorite Merle Haggard's songs.❤
Miss ya Merle.....My Dad Loved you!!!...... I think Skynyrd Did ya Proud!!!!

Hell Ya, I think that Merle & Ronnie were on the same Song writing page,
That man was born to be a music man -- RIP Merle

Mighty fine piano playing.

Mark Yeary The Strangers were the best. Thanks for sharing!!!

Merle Haggard R.I.P you will forever live on and I will forever pick your music and sing it as long as I am able to play and sing.. Lynyrd Skynyrd's version of this tune pays tribute to this great C&W legend. It's a great tune. Check it out.
+sunking2001 skynyrd was the best
+James Rockford I first heard Skynyrd's version and really liked it... as I'm a huge LS fan to begin with. Then I saw that Merle Haggard wrote the tune. I have a connection to the song as I am a bit of a "night owl" by nature. So...who is the "sounds like Roy" referring to? I say Roy Clark.
+sunking2001 Roy Nichols. Merle Haggard's long time lead guitarist.
+George Edwards How would the average LS fan know that? Just about everybody is familiar with Roy Clark...but not Roy Nichols. How 'bout Roy Rogers?
sunking2001 never heard of Roy Nichols
Excellent guitar pickin’
super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! merci R I P MERLE..............
RIP Merle!!!

I love his soulful Country vocal style ❤ In my opinion, Country and Soul are brothers ❤ Yowza ! Love 2nd guitar solo !

This is like seeing HW Sr. in his 30's. This is a bad, bad man.
Who is young guitar player ? Where was Roy Nichols and what year was this show? I love reading history of musicians like Merle , individuals in his band , Ronnie Van Zant , and rest of pre plane crash band.
Wish music being made today was real like then.
There was only ONE Roy Nichols, and there was only ONE HAG! "Cowboy Cody said so!"
Fabulous.
RIP Merle.
LS was legendary
James Rockford love the pic of kossoff man, he was definitely a big part of Skynyrds sound, they loved Free
LS rework it as Jacksonville Kid ! Both versions are ace !!!
two different songs, same music.
Killer mullet!
Good song!
Check out the version Skynyrd did based on this song called Jacksonville kid it was an unreleased track that they then released on the anniversary of street survivors

Wish could see the full show but don’t know how to get it?
I could listen all day
RIP Merle ♥️😢
Hello Kathy how are you doing hopefully you are doing good??
I asked someone who I thought would know and I was told this "That would be Benion Haggard Merle's son!"
Not Ben, it is Clint Strong in this video from 1987. Benny (merles youngest) wasn't born until 1992.
Hot damn that's good
clint strong kills it!
Good stuff! Dig the Dobro... Love Merle. Like the Skynyrd shout out. How long ago was this performance?
Hey txstar, his name is Clint Strong...Ben, his son, currently plays with him
RIP!!
Fly High Hag
The "HAG" That's some pickin' Kiddies. Not a lot of country Pickers use Les Pauls :D Nice
Why does he remind me of Jim Varney (Earnest P. Worrell)?
Because you're stupid!
Steve Gaines was an "Okey".
Love L S but the hag tops them all
@raveon09 That's Norm Hamlet .... Not even sure who Norm Peterson is :-o
When and where was this show performed
Joke!Norm Peterson was a character on the tv show"Cheers"
That was Norm Caldwell.
Who was the guitar player with the Les Paul?
Norm Peterson on dobro!
@Cimsound I agree Cling Strong is great...But Steve Gaines died at 28..So who knows what he would have been doing today?
who is the guitar player??,,nice playin"" ...
Clint Strong, jazz master. Started touring under his mentor Howard Roberts at age 9, toured all around the world at that young age. He is currently recording playing in ft worth, also was college professor at U Nev Reno and U Tx at Denton
Ronnie was a huge Merle Haggard fan, so peace out, I like both bands, just that some of that Merle stuff is too country for me, to each his own.
I'm only here because of oz..auf wiedersehen pet
Where's Nichols? What year was this? I must admit Clint Strong "sounds like Roy".

HE COULD SING THE BIBLE
Guitar player is badass
Clint strong .yeah merle wound up being married to his girlfriend. theresa.
cliff stinson
Clint Strong is definitely a great guitar player...but "this" tune was a "Roy Nichols Masterpiece"...and Clint should have stayed true to Roy's great work on this song. It isn't as though Clint isn't capable,...he is MORE than capable.
HE WAS SUPPOSE TO WATE ON ME
Thumbs down??? = ignorance
Love Earl, but Skynyrd did it better 👏
