This show and others around 83-86 were all being video taped, Marty Haggard and Steve Van Stralen ran the video crew. Concert attendees were given the opprotunity to purchase a copy if the show thatday and were mailed a copy about 4-6 weeks later. One of these days I will get a VHS player wnd convert the shows I still have and post them. I gave a dozen or so, it was a fun time out on the road then... I sure miss Merle, the strangers and most of all, my handsome, Mark, memories of our 46 years of love and friendship are on my mind everyday!

I was a drummer as well and biff was my IDOL to learn to keep a steady beat. ALWAYS. Steady. Then my guitar days came in and worshipping of course Roy Nichols. And finally, the greatest legendary guitar player of this century, Mr Redd volkaert ,he won't remember meeting me. But it was an absolute honor. Also Norm Hamlet on steel. I didn't meet him. I did meet however my favorite cat in history, who I think has since passed Don Markham. I love the strangers and it was my dream as a youngster to make it in the band. NEVER happened. That's ok. I'm 49 now and I'll sing and play merle's tunes till the day I die!!!!!

I'm from Bakersfield, CA. A lot of people don't give it much respect. This happens to be were Merle Haggard signed onwith Fuzzy Owens as his manager. From there they took it to Ken Nelson at Capitol records in Los Angeles. The rest is history. When they talk smack of Bakersfield I think of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens.
Merle and the Strangers were so good, everyone got a chance to display their individual and collective talents. Nothing fancy, nobody showing off, just doing what they did so well.

About six years before this, myself and a girlfriend of mine met Merle and Bonnie Owens in Seattle. Merle is a fantastic guitar player as well as a fiddle player. Seattle and Vancouver B C were the last stops on tours and they met a lot of local musicians.
This was probably my favorite Strangers lineup. First, Tiny Moore added the authenticity of the Texas Playboys and, with him, the band not only had the presence of the electric mandolin; Merle could also call on double (and including their bandleader himself) even triple fiddles. Gary Church and Don Markham gave him the fullness of a complete horn section including the depth of trombone, the versatility of saxophone as well as trumpet and coronet simultaneously. Mainstays Biff Adam and Dennis Hromek anchored a rock solid rhythm section while Norman Hamlett, Mark Yeary, and Jimmy Bellkin completed a veteran lineup that could handle anything Merle wanted to throw their way. I don’t believe I would be overstating to say this this may well have been the best, most versatile band in the world. Billboard Magazine voted the Strangers the best Country touring band 18 years in a row. Perhaps most importantly, Merle looked like he was truly enjoying himself during this period.

My friend Tiny Moore introduced me to Merle and his daughter Dana who sang a set of her songs that night. Also, Merle had Donna Faye singing background vocals with the band that night. She seems to be absent here. When I was at the concert in So CA, they had this full video and audio crew with pro-cameras and a huge soundboard (which was state of the art at the time with 48 channels!) I was told by one of the band members that Merle was filming every concert and was thinking about selling copies of concerts on VHS via his fan club in Redding, CA. Some copies of a few concerts were dubbed off the master and given out to close friends (like this one) but the concerts on video tapes for sale never got off the ground.
