    Lt. Cmdr. Adrian Dunois, USS Enterprise (CV-6)
    We’re readying for another strike. A flight of Wildcats found another convoy, this time with some Japanese fleet Oilers, alongside a IJN Cruiser squadron. They want us to run a mission with the three remaining Members of VT-3. We passed them on our way in, and as soon as we landed, our Dauntlesses were given a quick repair, fueled and armed, and are reading for takeoff now.
    11. There were eleven aircraft between the two squadrons. VB-6 alone had twelve aircraft and twenty four pilots and gunners when we left port.
    Luckily the Cruiser squadron was not close enough to provide support to the convoy, but they were still escorted by two cruisers and two destroyers. Commander Steele had command, and ordered us to break into our standard attack groups, and marked a target for each group. The Avengers were to go in last in an attempt to minimize casualties. We moved in with Group 1 initially, but broke, dove and released our bombs on target, causing plumes of fire to spit up from the transport. And then I was hit. I felt the plane shudder and the engine die. I radioed to King and told him to take over the flight before focusing my attention on not dying. I was able to hit the water relatively softly, where Leroy and I quickly gathered the meager emergency supplies and climbed on to the inflatable life raft. We were lucky. The Japanese passed right by us.
    I’m bleeding. I’m burned and I’m tired. I’ve no idea how long we’ve been out here, but I’m beginning to think nobody’s coming for us. Did this happen to anyone else? To Colin or Maddox or Micheal. I used to wonder what happened to them. Now I just hope it was quick.
    I think they know we’re here. I saw an Avenger circling earlier and they know where we went down. I don’t know if they have any rescue craft.

    I was thinking about this game last night. Targeting the freighters is the solution all right Sitarow, freighters have huge holds vulnerable to puncture. They don’t have trained damage control parties, they can’t quickly turn to avoid torpedoes and bombs, they can’t counter flood and become dangerously unstable if a hold floods. They aren’t designed to withstand damage like warships. No redundant watertight compartments. No armoured plating. If the supply is cut to Guadalcanal the garrison will be easy meat for American marines. Go for it !

    Just saying Tortuga, if you think from the Japanese side of things. Why would you even go into the Solomon Sea? If you look at the battle of the Coral Sea the Japanese took the northern route. I’d send my patrols up North of “Canal” and have them sweep up there instead of the Solomon.

    • @mikhailiagacesa3406
      @mikhailiagacesa3406 3 года назад +1

      I don't know if this explains the strategic situation, but; IJN cruiser divisions came out of Rabaul, so they tended to go west to east(When making for the 'Canal). IJN heavies(CV's and BBs) came from Truk in the North. Hence most big battles happened along a north-south axis. That area(North of the island chain) should be patrolled, but probably by subs and PBY's...I think. ;-)

      It’s funny you should mention that, the ships long ago dispersed fuel oil from the holes they took at the time, but now the hulks are rusting through the undamaged tanks and steel plating and after all this time are now leaking into the seas from sunken ships and subs of which there are thousands all around the world. Governments don’t want to deal with the problem because of the great expense of defuelling so many wrecks. It’s an ecological disaster. Don’t get me started on the Russians towing their obsolete nuclear subs out to deep water and sinking them because they couldn’t afford to remove the nuclear fuel rods for proper disposal after the Cold War. They are a ticking time bomb.

    The manual states that load-outs effect aircraft distance. You might want to experiment with different ordinance on your aircraft. Observing the differences between the 4x1000lb and 4x2000lb bomb load-outs on the B-17 would be a good control. Extending the distance of your B-17 strike force would certainly come in handy.
    On another note: seeing as the game doesn’t allow patrols to be set in an intuitive manor, it might just be simpler to park your subs in the bottlenecks between islands.
    As always, I look forward to the next instalment 🙂

    This Japanese AA is weird.
    The heavy AA on the merchants looks like a double unshielded 127mm Type 89, not sure if too big to have two or three mounted on merchants, but naval ships had priority for those guns, not sure if the Japanese had spares to lavishly outfit a dozen of merchant ships, or more.
    On the other hand, the primary armament of the destroyers is not dual-purpose; yes, the rate of fire was bad (but it's already in the game, game says 12 seconds to reload those, and that's the worse time, with good circumstances and crew you could halve that), the elevation was limited (and the game models that, when you flew the B-17 over the ships, there were no flak bursts, only machinegun tracers), and the gun was slow to aim, but it still would be something to have them be DP, especially at long distances, or against slower planes, or against skip bombing and torpedo attacks.
    Anyway, the skip bombing looked very cool.

    Currently, when you switch from one plane or ship to another, the display shows the settings of the former unit, so if you set plane 10 to fly straight at 5000 yards and then switch to plane 6, it will show as if set to fly at 5000 yards and straight ahead, even if it is actually set to fly at 200 yards and perform a hard port turn - which is _really_ annoying.

    Tortuga, you've played SH4. Remember when reports kept coming in for IJN convoys running through the slot, and ComSubPac kept asking for any units in the area to respond? Yeah, ya might wanna do that.
    I believe you could have spread those 11 attack aircraft even more across all 6 merchant vessels and kill them all. Let's do the classic Tortuga min/max! You showed in the last episode that 2 dive bombers or 1 torpedo bomber can sink a merchant.
    Okay, we confirmed near misses cause damage there with the B-17 raid.
    And I gotta say the amount of damaged caused to those B-17s by two DDs and a merchant is bullshit.
    Seems that even with skip bombing an aft-on run will yield the most damage.

    I just completed the tutorial for this game and it says that if an enemy ship is burning and heavily damaged when you leave the battle, there is a chance for it to be scuttled. However, it's only scuttled if it is on fire the moment you leave, so you should try to leave the battle before the fires burn out instead of waiting for them to do the most damage. For example, if you left the battle at 39:00 immediately instead of waiting for the fires to burn, both the merchant and the destroyer could've been scuttled.

    • @gotanon8958
      @gotanon8958 3 года назад

      For them to scuttle their ships there are 2 condition that has to be met
      1. Both dmg and flooding have to be critical for them to have a high chance to scuttle.
      2. Either the Dmg or flooding would have to be critical and the other heavy but the scuttling chance here is very low.

    *Raises hand* I have a question... @26:28 When you're checking the range on the B-17s, there is an option to "Land" AND "RTB". Can you click on another air base and then click "Land" to move aircraft there? I was also wondering if you could send the remaining Enterprise aircraft to new air base on Rennell Island and operate them out of there... Then send the ship back to New Hebridies for re-constitution of the air group...?
    Also, when attacking with dive bombers, you have been very successful. Why not use two-plane formations and thus double the targets you can hit?
    Finally... You have B-17s flying straight, level, and SLOW at 3,500 feet... And you don't think they could be hit easily? Maybe I'm reading a little too much of my history and study into this, but they're designed for high-level bombing. Just like dive bombers start their runs at 10,000 feet. Does the game not work that way? Just trying to figure out how the game mechanics work versus reality.

      I am afraid not, as far as the 'flying odd from carriers' idea is concerned... aircraft have a "home" and can only land at that designated position. If this was not the case, the infinite supply of aircraft from islands would also be able to replenish your CVs... but the game has to work somehow, even if it's not so historically or practically accurate

Therefore, you could say that using an island's leftover aircraft after dropping their payload as kamikaze-style ramming aircraft is more efficient than ordering them to RTB.

    HIstorically, trying to hit a destroyer from a B-17 using high altitude level bombing was almost impossible*. That why the USN started using skip bombing in 1943... which was VERY effective.
    Although they used 500 pound general purpose bombs with a short time delay fuse - not 2,000 pounders.
    *I can only think of 2 times it worked. And on one of them the destroyer wasn't moving because it was picking up survivors and thought the B-17 had no chance to hit.

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  3 года назад

      Hi Arthur. Did bombers also use skip bombing techniques against smaller ships such as destroyers?

    • @ComradeArthur
      @ComradeArthur 3 года назад

      @@TortugaPower Yes. Once 1943 rolled around it was the preferred method. It allowed even B-17s and B-24s to be VERY DANGEROUS against any ship - even if they could maneuver at high speed. In Hara's book, "Japanese Destroyer Captain", he described the time his ship came under skip bombing attack. He improvised and turned the ship so it headed directly towards the bomber. Giving the bomber a narrower target AND allowing his AA gunners to put more guns in action. The bomb missed and his radio operator said he heard the bomber crew say they were going to ditch.

      A plane being smacked by large caliber AA (40mm+) tend to find that flying... is quite challenging when you suddenly lose a part of your flight control surface or when one of your engine turns into a fireball and you suddenly turned from 4 engine bomber... into a 3 or 2 engine plane in an instant...
      B-17 and any other aircraft... might find themselves regain control some time after the initial sudden shock (after the unfortunate event when the AA shell tear a chunk of your plane apart)
      But if you start with virtually no altitude... then you are gonna end up splashing if not cratering on the ground before you get any chance of doing anything.
      B-17 is a heavy bomber at the end of the day, they were not really designed to fly low and close to the ground or sea that well (they are a big plane and a HUGE target after all, making them a pretty inviting target for the large caliber AA guns).
      B-17 might be relatively durable against 7.7mm MG or 20 or 30mm autocannons from fighters....
      Getting smacked by 40mm+ or worse 88mm AA guns though? You are going down if the plane took a direct hit that can just blew the wing spar (or sometimes the whole wing section) off the plane.
      B-25 and other medium bombers, or strike aircraft, fighter bombers, etc which are smaller, faster, and more agile... would be more suited for that kind of low flight than B-17...

    Here's what I'm thinking, you should've let the oilers pass. Why? So they can build up the airfield. Why? So you can invade and take the island without needing to use up a lot of valuable resources. The purely cargo transports? They have to go, although saying that they could be carrying supplies to build the airfield. I learn more about this game every day.
    Anyway, on to what I actually wanted to say:
    The game needs:
    -The Type A Japanese submarines and their variants, Sargo class, Salmon class, Porpoise class, and S-boats (can I say the US subs have abysmal test depth?)
    -Ports have PT boats that increase in number as it is upgraded
    -Lost aircraft should have a time penalty to replace, example: it will take 2 days for the 3 lost wildcats to be replaced.
    -Wasp and Lexington class carriers are musts.
    -Nagato class BB instead of Yamato b/c they actually participate in the campaign (albeit in a aircraft carrier battle).
    -I want APDs and more variety of merchant ships with different cost and stats.
    -Maybe add repair ships like USS Vestal? or Ammunition ships for resupply (C2s)?

      One of the historical Japanese missions was for the Japanese ships to spray their AA rounds at Henderson, since they are incendiary and create shrapnel, and this was considered effective against the kind of stuff you'd find at an airfield (aviation fuel, planes, not a lot of armorerd shelter).
      So I suppose the Yamato could be considered to use her secondaries in an attack?
