    The reason the range appears longer vertically rather than horizontally is because probably due to the map using the Mercator projection, which inflates the size of land masses on the top and bottom of maps. It’s the standard map for navigation, so it would make sense that the phenomenon happens in this game. Hopefully that explained it decently, if not, someone can explain it better than I can.

    Lt. Cmdr. Adrian Dunois. USS Enterprise (CV-6)
    Leroy and I are still floating in our life raft. We’ve been drifting across the waves for a while now, making idle chat and bad jokes, trying to think about what we have waiting for us at home, and trying not to think that we may never see home again., I just hope they aren’t occupied by the Japanese. My watch is broken, but just looking at the sun, it's only been a few hours, but it feels like so much longer, the sun unrelenting and the salty waves occasionally lapping over into our raft are probably not great for our long term survival.
    They found us. The lone destroyer from a mostly destroyed task force plucked us out of the sea. I think the crew wanted to kill us, but instead they just beat us, tossed us around and tormented us, being careful not to accidentally kill us. My Japanese is a bit rusty, but from what I was able to tell, they were reading to take us to one of their bases, and have us “properly interrogated.” I didn’t think this would ever happen.I’m aching, bleeding and starved, somewhere is an IJN Destroyer.
    Twin explosions suddenly rocked the rear of the destroyer, causing the ship to shudder violently, and her crew to scurry around frantically. Shortly after, the ship rocked again, from near misses this time. There was a short lull, where all we coil here were splashes of missed bombs, before everything erupted in flame. The compartment we were in was heavily damaged, with the guards disoriented, incapacitated or dead, and the cell door broke. Leroy and I made a break for it, two of the guards quickly intervened. A scuffle ensued, and eventually I was able to grasp my pistol, which had been left unloaded, but out in the open on a table, and strike him with the weapon.. I struck again and again, before turning to face Leroy. Leroy’s attacker knocked him down and pounced atop him, landing blow after blow. I searched for the magazine, loaded the weapon and aimed. I didn’t want to hit Leroy, I was hesitant. The guard reared up, a piece of debris in his, ready to strike, so I fired. Once twice, three times. One hit, the second went wide and the third grazed the guard's shoulder. No longer in immediate danger, we needed to find a way off the stricken ship, but it was sinking quickly. There didn’t seem to be many Japanese sailors left on the ship, and those that remained seemed to have little interest in evacuating. We found a small life boat, and left the ship, seeing it slip beneath the waves, burning brightly. I took out a flare and shot it skywards, hoping that it would be seen by whoever made the attack. I looked skywards and could hardly believe my eyes. It looked like Dauntless bombers, but high up. Really high up. To our relief a flare was fired from one of the airplanes, arcing it’s way down to the waves. There’s still hope.
    Floatplanes. OS2U Kingfishers. I never thought I’d be so happy to see one of the damned things. Three kingfishers, from the cruisers of TF10. When VB-6 reached Enterprise and learned of Flights of Kingfishers being used as scouts, they requested that some be detached to fill the roll of a makeshift search and rescue group to look for downed airmen. We were lucky. We were still relatively close to where we were last seen, so they didn’t have to look far to look. Rescue for others is less likely, but at least there’s hope.
    Two of the kingfishers were only crewed by their pilots to allow for rescued pilots to sit in the rear of the aircraft. Leroy and I were taken to TF10, and from there back to port. They debriefed us and checked into the hospital. We were dehydrated, burned, cut, bruised, and I know something hit my arm, either bullet or shrapnel, but I hope we’ll be ready to fly by the time Enterprise makes it home.
    Notes: I was kind of worried after last episode, I wasn't quite expecting Adrian to be downed, so I had to do quite a bit of thinking to keep him at least somewhat involved in the story, and I'm glad it's working out so far. Keep up the good work, and thank you for these wonderful videos.

    Its actually better to leave the battle while the fire is burning. I just completed the tutorial for this game and it says that if an enemy ship is burning and heavily damaged when you leave the battle, there is a chance for it to be scuttled. However, it's only scuttled if it is on fire the moment you leave, so you should try to leave the battle before the fires burn out instead of waiting for them to do the most damage, as the damage will eventually be repaired. (Also, the destroyer may have been sunk by a collusion with the second myoko!)

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  3 года назад +12

      Hi Peter. I guess the chance of scuttling is very small, and requires critical damage to flooding and structure. We only had heavy for each. It seems almost always better to see if the fire kills the ship (if you can spare the time)

    Don't know if you saw my comment on an earlier vid, but it's worth remembering the INHERENT SPOTTING RANGE of bases. The values for Ports and Airfields STACK, so that means you get one for a port and one for an airfield. The airfield ones are much greater.
    I mention this because it's possibly worth thinking about when moving submarines, for example. No USN sub skipper CHOSE to spend time near Japanese air bases if it could be avoided, or at least spent the day submerged if not, because the one thing subs DON'T want to do is give their position away until it's revealed by them sinking something.
    I'd not be surprised if the game isn't too sophisticated in how the AI responds to sightings, but it's a more "realistic role play" idea to know the spotting ranges of bases and plot courses accordingly.
    I also note you're not bothering to check the weather, although that is REALLY important when it comes to chances of spotting things, or of course being spotted. I suspect viewers might like to learn it IS able to be shown and how to do so. I happen to leave it ON the whole time.
    Just thought I'd put these thoughts forward again in case you'd not seen them.
    If you have and don't care, that's entirely your right, LOL.

    First: Sorry for my english. My native language is german. :-)
    Very strange: I found a convoy (2 destroyer, 2 heavy cruiser and freighter. I identified all of them)). I attacked the convoy, sunk a Heavy cruiser with my bombers and leave the battlefield. I lost contact to the convoy but after 1 hour ingame time i found the convoy again and attacked the enemy with a second wave of divebombers. But the convoy had again 2 Destroyers, 2 Heavy Cruiser and freighter. And one Cruiser ,the one I hit before, was a different Heavy Cruiser. I can't believe that there were a second convoy next to the convoy i found first... No enemy port was in the area.
    Did you ID ships while you attack them and on a second attack wave (after you loose contact for a very short time) you found different ships and destroyed ships were intact?

    Apparently it WAS possible to HEAR an aircraft if it passed overhead at not too great an altitude and the sub wasn't very deep. Dick O'Kane mentions exactly that in one or both of his books, "Wahoo" (about his time as Exec of the USS Wahoo) and "Clear the Bridge" (about the combat patrols of USS Tang of which he was the CO). Both make for fantastic reading for anyone interested in hearing about this aspect of the Pacific war from someone who was there and ended up with one of the greatest records of any USN sub skipper (he was also awarded the Medal of Honor).
    I suppose it makes sense as the sound waves from the plane will hit the water then travel through it to some extent. Obviously conditions etc would play a large part, although it doesn't make much sense for the contact to be lost while overhead yet regained as it got further away. I've suspect that's a side effect of sensor programming in the game, just as the air search radar in Silent Hunter 4 gave you the bearing and plotted it on the map despite the fact that the USN air search radar in at least the first few years only gave range, NOT bearing (they were lazy in how they updated SH4 from SH3).

    I would think the AP would best against ships, punching deeper down and starting fires on multiple levels, HE for use on land targets and oil tankers. Not sure if that’s modeled as a game mechanic, but from the early vids where you showed the internal structure of your destroyers, it is my guess? But for sure, an AP bomb would really mess up a cruiser. The irony of Leyte Gulf is the Japanese thought they were engaging Halsey’s battleships, cruisers, and fleet carriers when it was really Taffy 3 made of destroyers, destroyer escorts, and pocket carriers instead, and as a result the AP shells meant for fleet ships simply passed clean through and exploded harmlessly in the water many dozens of yards away... even the Johnston managed to keep coming back over and over because they had AP shells thrown at them, even in the final fight they turned the ship into Swiss cheese and still did not have the common sense of using HE shells on it. Only at the very end did the Japanese switch to HE and finish off Hoel and Samuel B. Roberts, but by then the bear that was Japan had been stung by enough angry American bees that they left the battle, and the Yamato proved to be the biggest non-factor. So historically: HE vs DD, AP for Cruiser and up. Game mechanics? I don’t really know. Maybe try dropping three AP bombs on the other cruiser? Call it a “experiment”, see which type of bomb delivers a better reef to help the fish repopulate Iron Bottom Sound? Love the series! Glad I found out about you from a... uhh... “incident” involving a Bf110 and a Wolfpack. So, at the begining of the war - that wildcat - zero encounter might as well end up like that... Pilots were trained to use head-on passes and "boom and zoom" tactics - without turning dog fights. They were, luckily exchanged for hellcats quite fast, which were better.

    you should do an L pattern on your scouts... like i.e. if your wildcats have a 350nm you should do a straight 290nm line in one direction and then a 90 degree turn to left or right for the last 60nm. This way you get one traveling route when you go and then another differemt route when you come back, ending up in a triangular shape final route for the scout
    That's in fact how navys did scouting in WW2 and it is still used today

    Hello! I noticed one small detail You might be missing in the game like this. Aircraft search patterns, both sides used it from 1941 to 1945 as the most efficient way of spotting enemy warships. Sending the planes one way and back is not optimal. Sending them in "L" like pattern, you could cover a greater area with those planes. Look it up, maybe it will help, maybe not ;)
    I love the gameplay btw, I'm thinking about getting the game for my self thanks to You. Cheers!

      I agree. I wasn't using L shapes because there was a bug with waypoints.

    All those Zeros. Does this mean a IJN CV?

    • @steeltrap3800
      @steeltrap3800 3 года назад +3

      You may well know this already, but just as the USA's level 1 airfields have 4 Wildcats, the Japanese have 4 Zeros.
      As the airfield gets increased in level it gets more and different types. The Japanese start with quite a few airfields further north, and the Zero has an excellent rage (or at least it OUGHT to, not sure how accurately the game has reflected correct performances).
      It's possible, therefore, that they're simply coming from various airfields. In fact one rather silly aspect of the game is if you use up all your planes through poor tactics etc, as soon as the base is able to launch again you AUTOMATICALLY GETS FULL REPLACEMENT. They're essentially unsinkable, inexhaustible plane factories.

    The a6m2 zero is a superior aircraft then the wildcat
    Don't forget that the zero had 20mm guns while the wildcat didn't
    Yes the wildcat did have more armor but that was about the only advantage it had the zero was faster more agile more range and had better armament
    Don't know if this is represented in the game
