Well, your Solution dropped, as the sub slipped into your baffles. Basically, your Sonar has a blindspot in its aft quarter, so your working by guesswork as you overtook the sub. Actually like in real life.

Also I have a suspicion that your subs which were sent out on patrol towards excellent areas will travel on the surface. Please check that this is the case and submerge them if they spot an observation plane. Good hunting. Terry
Subs on the campaign map are on the surface, so first thing I do -- I think this happens in ep 2, unless I'm confusing with my personal campaign -- is go to periscope depth. Turns out, Zeros will strafe you anyway! But yes, good point about the scout planes. It's unfortunately tedious so not something I'll be using optimally.

In WW2, US Pacific Subs generally operated on surface at night on diesel power 2 recharge batteries. During day when within range of hostile air or known enemy patrol zones, operated at periscope depth.

25:15 You probably already know this but to the viewers using this as an expanded tutorial (like me) the reason your solution drops down to 0 after firing depth charges is because the guy on the hydrophone can no longer maintain sonar contact with the sub due to the explosions in the water. This is a prime opportunity for the sub to hightail it away from danger

Completely agree, the strategy layer turns a shoot bang bang battle into a real challenge. BTW I imagine the DD's solution goes to zero because it has passed over the Japanese submarine. The active sonar pings forward and the DD's engines creates baffles in the rear.
Not sure if you already know since it's been a year, but when hunting for subs, especially in Sea State 4 or above, you have to slow down to 12 kn or below to detect submarines with active sonar. For passive, you have to have a sea state of 3 or below and go at around 10 kn. The faster you go, the less effective will your sensors be due to your own engine noise.
I haven't seem a large scale strategy game like this in the WWII era, and I look forward to seeing how this plays out in the future. Something that I sometimes do when I find a good campaign online is write a sort of "log" from the the point of view of a crewman on one of the ships. I can think of no better candidate than the Enterprise. Entry 1: Lt. Cmdr. Adrian Dunois. We put to sea today. After seeing the massive fleet’s we’ve assembled, this task force seems tiny in comparison. Just a few ships in size, but it should be adequate for our current objective. We’ve been assigned to occupy Rennell Island, with Enterprise, Atlanta, and a few Fletchers making up the task force, while several C3s make up the bulk of the invasion force. This is looking to be only the first step in a long fight. I just hope we all make it home.

I love this game and this helps out a lot .As soon as I get good at controlling the ships it will be a blast .Right now my ships are cannon fodder .Thanks
7:20 "Dual Purpose" means the medium battery (3"/4"/5" guns, depending on the ship) can be used to attack both surface targets, or tilted up high enough to shoot high explosive shells to take down aircraft. The AA shells would go up to a certain height and then explode like the way fireworks do, sending shrapnel in all directions. So dual purpose or not would have no bearing on hunting submarines. If a gun is not dual purpose it can only fire at surface targets, not aircraft.
19:26 You need to slow your DDs to 10 knts for passive sonar and around 2 knts for active and they don't work together, that is turn passive off if you want to use active to get a solution in a timely manner.
The sonar ping goes out in all directions, but the microphone listening for a reflection is directional, thus your sonar operator might be listening to the wrong direction even if you are "on top of the sub". Oh and your own engines create noise, so "not going full speed" helps.
I'm just finishing all the training missions an hour in and I can already say I hope they focus on attention to the details and realism for updates. Even just Graphic effects and better ship detail would go a long way...

I'd say that depth charging looks very realistic. In War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, I've seen submarines take several direct hits and survive. And yes, Killerfish Games has a tendency to release games with an early access feel to them. They will be fixed eventually, as they have done with Atlantic Fleet and Cold Waters. What I look forward to seeing is all the campaign windows filled. Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Mediterranean.
I always imagined depth charges to be inaccurate, and getting a "hit" meant getting within 150 ft / 50 m, whereas a direct contact DC hit would really ruin a submarine's day.
Depending on where it hit, plus how much of the pressure hull was damaged, and what systems got damaged, they could theoretically just close some hatches and limp away. In the case of this video, you crippled the propulsion and caused enough flooding to blow ballast. Then again, you also had a view to actually see the sub. ASW forces never got that lucky.
I just Picked up Cold Waters a couple days ago on sale...if I like that one I think I'll end up with this one also! Same developers! Looks quite interesting!
Use flank speed to get about one grid block to the suspected sub area then slow down to 8-12 kn in order to get a sonar hit earlier. Higher than 15 kn will not give you give sonar results.
Not sure how ASW works in this game but 2 destroyers doing ASW - first destroyer acts as the hunter using depth charges while second destroyer acts as a Tracker (no more than 10 knots keeping sonar lock). Once hunter destroyer completes attack run, you flip both destroyers role thus keeping pressure on submarine.
not sure if you already know it, but sonar won't spot the sub if you go full speed, all above your speed set to 16-18km you will spot it just when you above, if you go at 15km you will spot it like 300mt in front of you, the slower the ship goes, the further away you will spot the sub. i usually move towards the torpedo launch area then i slow down to 8km and it will pop up even 500mt away, giving you the time to maneuver on it, also with 2 dd's you can use one to keep it spotted and the other to run attacks..
In the future, my gaming channel BattleGroupGamer will be doing an IJN campaign. I need to get off my lazy ass and finish Cold Waters 1968 first. I'm waiting for more fixes and improvements before showing a campaign anyway.
I just bought the game and im trying to figure out how to launch it and followed what you did with the subs and aircraft; @ 14:02 how did you launch the aircraft? Also, if I only wanted to use the game as a sub sim can I just launch subs out on patrol ? and if so, how do I actually launch them once I have their patrol routes set?
Most intelligent way I've seen this game played so far. Do the ASW manually and yes the minute a sub surfaces it fires. American damage control is superior
I think you highly overestimate the effective radius of a depth charge. As I understand it, only the really heavy ones (that were fired from torpedo tubes) were lethal if they were more than 6-10 meters from the submarine.
About DamCon - isnt its faster and safer to just flood the fire and pump out the water afterwards after you deal with your enemy like that sub? Than you dont risk to loose your crew/ammo/engines to fire. Also does engines deteriorate under water if they are flooded?
In the absence of any good tutorials I thought I would copy your campaign. It would have been good if you told us that we dont have enough command points to do this campaign from the get go instead of wasting our time!
Unfortunately, I cannot see the future (both back then and still today), so I was unable to predict the developer would change the default points allotted.
Is there any tangible benefit in going with Fletchers vs say Bagleys/Gridleys? The Fletcher has the 1 additional gun but is nearly double the price and also comes with 6 fewer torpedoes. Just wondering if there's something in the actual gameplay that justifies the extra cost and is not represented in the specs. Thanks, great video.
Sir, I'm 2 minutes into the video but I can't wait to say how delighted I am to find your content again. I was subscribed but there was a catastrophic incident involving a cat, a moth, my laptop and a full bottle of beer, it wasn't pretty and I wasn't even in the room to react in any meaningful time, so bye-bye my old friend and everything was linked, when I lost the various accounts I got locked out and the password (yes, the one I wrote down so it couldn't be lost) that one, it wasn't valid? Find a very small violin to play here, I used to be Greysquirrel1, the first and original now I am Greysquirrel414, I mean, come'aun guys, get your own damn name. Anyway, what with all the wailing and gnashing of teeth I definitely missed some of the people I like to watch and sorry to admit, you were one of them (I promise to be faithful, honest!) so I am happy to re-subscribe and looking forward to the campaign. The cat? I'm glad you asked well he just treats me with indifference and disdain unless he's hungry, we have four and there are a number of rooms in our house, so why do they all have to be on my bed? There is little room left for me and I think they are trying to starve me out? Damn pesky cats, I think they totalled my computer on purpose because I wasn't paying enough attention to them. We have one cat that sits (I spell carefully here) on my shoulder and 'yaas' in my ear if I am on the phone, just why should I be talking to somebody else? Even worse, a piece of plastic? All of which has got very little to do with your site and content, you know, the kind of people who 'watch' can say a lot about a person. Oh dearie, dearie me, you are so toasted! (I was going to say 'fucked' but I thought it might be rude). (no word of a lie, I have a (an?) emoji menu open by accident and I can't make it go away, so don't blame me if there's loads of smiley faces, it wasn't my idea.🙃😊😉😂, just fuck off now, no, no, not you Tortuga these little bastards, if I keep selecting them will they run out? Funniest fact ever, I am actually an electronics engineer, but I hail from the days when we knew what we were doing, we would analyse a system and determine a failure, then we would fix it and if you were going for 'cool points' you would add some latin, for instance, a certain stockbrokers had a habit of spraying champagne all over some very expensive equipment, because we could analyse a circuit, it was an easy fix to stop them creating such mayhem but we preferred to return the equipment, excellently repaired and just add quid pro quo. Without any sense of irony, not 'tongue in cheek', seriously, Pax Vobis. (I've been saying that since I was Greysquirrel1)
Wait, the Yorktown class carriers are the only US carriers in this game? What about the Lexington class, Wasp, and the Essex class? And the CVLs and CVEs?
You couldn't pick up the sub because your ship was traveling too fast, had you slowed to 5 knots you would have picked her up quickly. Then use the second destroyer to attack
I think so too. I would also add that with charges in the water (explosions) one would lose it´s solution. To much noise I would think. Good play though Tortuga!
I've watched this and a few other YT vids, and have not seen anyone using (or looking for in the menus) maritime patrol aircraft. Are PBY's and other land-based or seaplane long-range recon aircraft just not in the game?
On the other side of periscope, it bugs me that 99% torpedo launch solution gives at best 2 hits from 6 tubes fired either give me TDC or basic tools on minimap for manual firing.
Coo start for a campaign, looks like a game with a lot of potential, especially once the first realism mods drop. Your DD lost track of the sub, because it went behind you into the baffles.
Makes sense about the baffles, although I'm not going to be trusting the game's detection system, as I've had some pretty terrible scenarios (like a submarine ~200 yards in front of a DD not being detected).
@@TortugaPower at what depth exactly? Early active sonars was limited not only in horizontal axis but in vertical as well (i.e. was that sub in at least 20-30 deg vertical arc?). In the Silent Hunter for example if you got to at least 80 meters in early war ASDIC cant pick you up because of that.

I just Picked up Cold Waters a couple days ago on sale...if I like that one I think I'll end up with this one also! Same developers! Looks quite interesting!
Great work mate - liked and subbed ;-)
Cheers, David!
Yeah, this seems like a good approach at least in WotS.
Cool Beans. Thanks.
You can flood the compartments to help w the fire. keeps it from spreading as much
not sure if you already know it, but sonar won't spot the sub if you go full speed, all above your speed set to 16-18km you will spot it just when you above, if you go at 15km you will spot it like 300mt in front of you, the slower the ship goes, the further away you will spot the sub. i usually move towards the torpedo launch area then i slow down to 8km and it will pop up even 500mt away, giving you the time to maneuver on it, also with 2 dd's you can use one to keep it spotted and the other to run attacks..
Great content! Keep it up.
Appreciate it!
There is a mod to remove subs and swap them for small fleets of DDs and CA's
Just found this game on Steam and it looks fun. Is there realism regarding the US torpedoes early in WW2?
I can see myself enjoying this game.
Glad to see you start a campaign, even if I wish at least one person I subscribed to did a Japan campaign (assuming it's possible)
In the future, my gaming channel BattleGroupGamer will be doing an IJN campaign. I need to get off my lazy ass and finish Cold Waters 1968 first. I'm waiting for more fixes and improvements before showing a campaign anyway.
I think I'll be streaming a Japanese campaign off-and-on, but otherwise keep an eye out that Wolfpack345 might be doing Japan!
The submarine warfare needs to be reworked in this game.
American damage control is superior
....yeah....this game needs MUCH work.....but it has potential.
I think you highly overestimate the effective radius of a depth charge. As I understand it, only the really heavy ones (that were fired from torpedo tubes) were lethal if they were more than 6-10 meters from the submarine.
Reading history is much better. 👌
I feel like this is a new battlestations and pacific storm allies game in as one.
About DamCon - isnt its faster and safer to just flood the fire and pump out the water afterwards after you deal with your enemy like that sub? Than you dont risk to loose your crew/ammo/engines to fire. Also does engines deteriorate under water if they are flooded?
A compartment can be burning and flooded at the same time, so flooding the compartment doesn’t put out the fire
I bought this the second it came out, it's been 3 years already?
This reminds much of battlestations pacific
What is the awful mechanic of torpedoes in Atlantic Fleet were you referring to? (at 29:30)
They were turn-based. They moved 3000 yards then stopped for the enemy movement phase.
Ever play War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition? Ultimate campaign game.
Yes. I think I streamed the Coral Sea campaign once upon a time.
Maybe the narrow aspect of the sub is hard for your sonar to detect? Once side on it should get great return.
I think it does work that way in this game (at least it should, from the makers of Cold Waters)
i live in kansas where both the town and the national grasslands cimmaron are located...is said Sim'a'RON...lol
The Spanish style, thanks for letting me know.
Three years ago a bit late for a like? What can I tell you. I’m not quick, but I’ll get there. :)
Sometimes I wonder what kind of game we’d have if Rule the Waves/Atlantic Fleet/world of warships were combined. 🧐
That would seem to be something something similar to Victory at Sea Pacific or like this, or maybe Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts.
Gosh, I can't remember but is there any AA advantage? Dual-purpose guns maybe?
The YorkTown is "Unavailable" thats a way to put it XD
Hmm... Late to the show but Type 93 long lance torpedo is an oxygen fuel torpedo. They are not supposed to have wake I think.
Welcome back, Greysquirrel. Quite a return post.
@@TortugaPower Cheers matey, I've got some serious binging to do,great!
The Porter Class DD's were designed to be Destroyer Leaders for Destroyer Squadrons. Also SONAR works better at slow speeds. 15 knots isn't slow.
I think so too. I would also add that with charges in the water (explosions) one would lose it´s solution. To much noise I would think. Good play though Tortuga!
New policy: slow to 10 knots or less if tracking. Thanks =)
I've watched this and a few other YT vids, and have not seen anyone using (or looking for in the menus) maritime patrol aircraft. Are PBY's and other land-based or seaplane long-range recon aircraft just not in the game?
Catalinas are noticeably absent, unfortunately. We get Kingfishers from ships.
You want duel purpose guns on the destroyers. American torpedos till 43 weren't very good. Atlanta cruiser is good for AA
If u wanna watch the whole playlist it would take 90 days or more
On the other side of periscope, it bugs me that 99% torpedo launch solution gives at best 2 hits from 6 tubes fired either give me TDC or basic tools on minimap for manual firing.
Totally different from what ad shows
Hey does anyone know if you can have your ships controlled by A.I so you are not micro managing a whole fleet?
would you recommend this game? ive got a MacBook which this game is compatible with.
Why does the Farragut look like that though? Is that one of the things people complain about is ship models?
I have heard a few complaints about the models in the game.
In the Silent Hunter for example if you got to at least 80 meters in early war ASDIC cant pick you up because of that.
damn. the tactical sea battle game Killerfish made before this was a LOT more fun. :(
for some reason the price of these vessels is way more for me 1 sub costs 10 points and the yorktown costs 120 points
Is there torpedo boat?
Solution drops to zero when you are on top of a sub because the noise is combined with the DDs.
