    There is a bug with your fleets losing their course orders when you log out and reload a game. You'll notice that NONE of your submarines remembered where they were supposed to go. All of them pretty much sat in the same location for the entire video.

    I was a sonar operator on a surface ship in the 70's. This is a pretty bizarre interpretation and visualization of what it's like to search for subs and attack them. Fun, but, you know... If we had been equipped with that undersea camera drone that could move at light speed, boy howdy! By the 70's, of course, it was a different game from WWII: subs were faster and could dive deeper, and their high-speed homing torpedoes could have hit us almost before we knew they were in the water. As for detection, surface-ship sonar was almost obsolete; attack subs, or sonar buoys equipped with with radio transmitters dropped from aircraft, were way more reliable. In war games, I never detected a submarine, even when I knew one was nearby. Sneaky buggers.

      Very fun to hear about this. Yeah, ASW in this game is nothing like reality, but sometimes can reproduce realistic outcomes.

    • @2020Max1
      @2020Max1 3 года назад +12

      @@TortugaPower ASW wouldn't be bad if there was some variation to it. So far all that it seems to amount to is > Zoom out > See where the Torps are coming from > Avoid Torps > Drive your ship over the top of the sub > drop depth charges until the sub either sinks or surfaces.... From the Japanese perspective it seems to be ... blow your entire load on in one attack , and when that fails steam in a straight line until you get depth charged to death... maybe every once in a while you'll get to surface and fire your deck gun a couple of times before dying...

    • @davidgarbutt583

      @@2020Max1 true, if sonar was more reliable and battle instances more varied ASW would be exciting. Editing out some of the searching and maneuvering into position for charges could make them more enjoyable to watch.

    • @2020Max1
      @2020Max1 3 года назад +10

      @@davidgarbutt583 I don't really mind the search and maneuvering aspect. My biggest issue with it is that the AI (for both the enemy and your ships) is about as smart as a pile of bricks. The enemy sub makes virtually NO attempt to evade even as you are rolling over the top of them dropping depth charges on them. The state of sonar is broken at best. With 2 or more DD's searching and they are still unable to detect a sub that's tooling along at 7kts in a straight line. Active sonar should give you the enemies near exact bearing and range when you are within the sonar's detection range. But as of yet I have not seen any indicator that active sonar even works.

    • @2020Max1
      @2020Max1 3 года назад +4

      @@davidgarbutt583 I was giving a think about what could be done to improve the ASW mechanics and one thing that I came up with would be a way to "simulate" the passive sonar. Like maybe when you were in direct control of one of your ships you could get audio queues based on what direction you're facing. For instance, if your ship was sailing due North and the submarine was somewhere on your port side, as you swung the camera over to port you'd gradually be able to hear the enemy sub the closer you got to the subs actual bearing. This would be useful by allowing you to use multiple DD's to triangulate a sub's position much the same way it was done in a real sub hunt. Another thing that is sorely needed is the inclusion of map tools for you to use for plotting a sub's track like the tools that you have in the Silent Hunter and U-Boat games.

      I agree. One DD using active sonar will pinpoint the exact location of any submerged sub. Most subs would make runs on submerged contacts between 12-18kts. Depth charges dont have to hit the sub to destroy them, they work by using overpressure to collapse bulkheads and hulls.

    Entry 2
    Lt. Cmdr. Adrian Dunios, USS Enterprise (CV-6). One of the scout groups from an airbase off the Solomon Sea reported a large convoy of IJN Ships. Six Merchant ships, two Takao class cruisers and two destroyers. We’ve been launching scouts all day to try and reestablish contact with no luck. It’s possible they were destined for one of their bases, and have arrived in port. TF5 has been screening ahead of us, and has thus far destroyed 3 submarines.Apparently they’ve been hit several times by the deck gun when their target surfaces, and are now dropping an increased number of charges to keep this from happening. I can’t imagine being in one of those metal death boxes when it goes down. Just having no chance to survive, and guaranteed a slow death.
    Oh no! I forgot to actually post the rest of the log! It's up now, I had it all backed up to a separate document just in case I was an idiot.

    1. You do realize the depth charges fouling up the SONAR is why you loose contact after an attack.

    • @TortugaPower
      @TortugaPower  3 года назад

      My use of fighters as scouts is intentional. Typically the US had four flight types in their carriers (at least at first), about 25% of fighter, dive bomber, torpedo bomber, and scout (which was also dive bomber). They adjusted this to be more fighter-heavy later in the war, but basically point is they had a designated scout group, whereas we do not. Of my 12x of each, I deem that the Wildcats least need to be ready to go for an attack, so I use a few of them as scouts.

    Comments on ASW only
    If I was the individual posting these videos I’d try to make them both enjoyable and exciting or at least interesting and while the underwater camera does make it somewhat easier it does also make the viewing a lot more easy to follow. ( imagine having an underground camera on the two yard line when the balls on the three yard line and you seat is at the other end of the stadium!) You would expect that camera angle on a WWll movie so why not here !
    As for the the fastest deck guns in submarine history I’d suggest you get the search ship to apply the Coup de grace in case the sub surfaces below your main guns minimum elevation.
    Finally while I note the glitch you mentioned above can I enquire why you not deploying your subs as an advance screen to protect your Carrier ? ( I note you are for your slow supply convey ) Wildcats as previously mentioned are not scouts and can do next to nothing if the find the enemy unless it’s a fishing boat ! A sub can be your eyes and ears and they can pack a punch . I’ve watched all your vids to date and if I was your CO I’d ask you why aren’t you utilising your subs better ? ( glitch aside )
    Otherwise it’s compelling viewing so I hope you continue with many more .

    You lost the sun contact because she was behind you so you couldn’t hear her apart from your engines and the second destroyer was directly in-line with the sub and thenfirst destroyer therefore she couldn’t hear the sub over the forward destroyers engines...It seems like they put thought into the mechanics of sound propagation....I think having a destroyer set at 90 degrees from the target listening while another destroyer does her attack run could be more successful...But I was just a lowly Sgt in the Army and no nothing of naval tactics 😂😂

    Why would you be using a Wildcat to contemplate attacking an enemy convoy with? They were used for fighter sweeps and close air support of ground targets. Unless specifically armed with 100 lb SAP's, the F4F was not the aerial platform of choice. If they spotted a convoy, they would radio back and Dauntless or Devastator aircraft would be used.

    Nice video, thank you for posting, keep it up 😎
    1940's passive sonar tech consisted pretty much of a guy sticking a stethoscope in the water and listening....
    Very crude, and not super effective against submarines; that is why they went with active sonar (pinging).
    Now the active still had it's share of problems, i.e. it was very directional, and sent sound out in a cone shape directed predominately forward and down.
    Therefore it could not see to the rear at all, nor to the sides or bellow very effectively.
    The main benefit of active sonar was that you could still maintain the contact while moving at medium to high speeds when making attack runs on submerged submarines.
    Here is excellent "shallow dive /primer" source material on WWII sonar and tactics:

    More than a year late. If anybody reads this, it wasn't my fault! I completely get the point about 'Atlantic Battle', hell, it was boring as 'eff but the intelligent way you approach a 'problem' (like a submarine) is def worth watching. Yeah, you need to suspend a sense of realism at times, for instance a sub that had to blow ballast just to survive is probably not in a good condition to 'duke it out' with a destroyer, if they even went near the gun the decks would be raked with '50 cal and cannon fire, nobody would be left alive to fire back. But hey ho, maybe they were invincible ninja marines? I've seen those ninjas in the movies, they are hard to kill (movies never lie).
    As it is extremely unlikely that anybody will ever read this, I may as well continue to spout shite.
    Speaking of movies (well, I was) there was a great 'movement' in the 70's/80's that any American car that even veered sideways would erupt in a massive explosion, that must be great petrol you have in the former colonies? Any chance of sending me some? I have an old car that seems a bit lazy, probably just needs some of that US petrol (sorry, you call it gas but I'm not surprised, it must be so volatile).
    True story, some young rapscallions got hold of some aviation fuel and thought it would be a good idea to fire it into a twin motorbike, they got as far as the gate. There was enough original fuel in the carb to get them going but then the new stuff got into contact. It blew rods out of the top of the engine and seriously wrecked their fun for an entire day.
    That's ok though, they got a turbo and fitted it to an old 'landy' the next day, black smoke? There was lots of it and then it actually spun the tires on it's journey to a sad demise.
    There's a few things I feel guilty about, not marrying Yvonne would be top of the list but there was destruction to perfectly good engines, they didn't deserve that. Sometimes I wonder how I have survived all these years, the total arrogance to just not give a shit must have some form of protection.
    That and my Mother's prayers?
    Pax vobis.
