- File Explorer shows you thumbnails for all files unless it’s a file it doesn’t recognize. Videos almost always have a thumbnail and unless a specific thumbnail is set for it, Windows 10 will use the first frame as the thumbnail. This may, or may not help you identify what the video is. It is not hard to follow, this is just a very dirty solution. Runnin a script via cmd is not something you should present on RUclips for potential beginners and people who have no understanding what this cmd is and what damage they can do with it.

Very considerate of you to include the code in the YT description. Maybe that's why so many dislike this video.
The reason is why you have many dislikes its because you dont have a thumbnail on the vid
you dont even need the cmd, you can just open the tageditor, find and open the mp4, and replace the thumbnail with any image. this is just complicated

The dislikes are most likely because you skip the most important steps of this "EXPLANATION" by saying type the command you see on your screen [which is blurry] and you type and move forward with the command on the screen after literally 1 second: I can't make out the command, and can't infer what it should be since if I could, I wouldn't need to watch the video-- pausing doesn't help because it's blurry.
You might as well just make a video where you say, download this software and use it correctly: if someone knows what that is; it's a great video. If not, it's really hard to "follow."
Why the dislikes? This worked perfectly. Even easier than in the video since the codeing part is now managed by the program it self.

Way too complicated for something that should be already be doable in Windows. This is useless since I have hundreds of files 😫
I think there is a way for automation.
Guys, this is not necessary. My english isn't very good, but here is the solution:
Press Win + R;
Type "control folders";
Go to "View";
Uncheck "Always show icons, never thumbnail";
Problem fixed.

Not working for me, the cmq does not even recognize the command to begin with
tks for the tut video but it's quite complicated, and the programmers had updated the app. Now you just need to download, extract, run the *exe file, choose the video and then add the image thumbnail then save. All done!

The dislikes are from beginners that are new to this stuff because this video works perfect for advanced users like the rest of us. But yeah, I think you should explain it more like how to open CMD and stuff so most beginners can properly understand
Forget that. You can't even download a precompiled Windows EXE for that. I was able to do this in AtomicParsley. It works on the commandline. Howwever, it balked at a JPG that was made in PhotoShop, but a quick re-save in another app, and Atomic Parsley popped in the new thumbnail with the 2nd JPG. Thumbs up if you use this idea!

You're not starting cmd from the folder containing the .exe file (also you must rename the .exe file to tageditor.exe)
I do not care what the thumbnail for the file is. I will take the first frame of the video but WINDOWS 10 DOES NOT DO IT BY DEFAULT...AND YOU DID NOT SHOW HOW TO DO IT!!! Learn from feedback which you look incapable of doing.
Just use iTunes.
1. Drag n' drop video into iTunes.
2. Goto "Home Video" library.
3. Right click on video.
4. select "Video Info".
5. Drag n' drop desired image onto the box left of title, or drag n' drop in the "Artwork" area, or click the add button at bottom in the "Artwork" area and find file.
6. Click "OK"

Not sure why you're getting a ton of dislikes, this worked perfectly for me. Downloaded version 3.12 and ran the application. Your video guide might not be up to date though since there's no longer a need for the terminal.
i couldn't change mp4 files but i tried on the files that is not mp4, like m4v files and it did work.
Seems to only work on mp4 huh? Fails for me when I try it on an mkv file

I gave a dislike because in my eyes it is a sloppy, dirty solution to just run a script via "cmd".
I am a software developer and I would consider something basic and dirty like this for my personal use only. This is not something you should push forward for potential beginners with a RUclips video.

Thhi works only for mp4 videos not mkv ,if you guys want a fast solution for mp4 just get MP3 TAG open the mp4 video you want ,go to cover option replace the cover picture to whatever you want and save it DONE !No more than 2 minutes !

Are you serious? On a mac, you press, 'apple/command button and 'i' to get info, then you paste in your thumbnail onto the icon shown while it is selected/highlighted'.

Spoiled by Apple Cr4p. I have a Mac too and its the same click-bait bollocks that idiots post on here to get their views up. Change the Thumbnail to an image that has no bearing on the video at all.
Need help - when I open the file it's almost exactly like in your video but there is no "cover" section beneath the lyrics one. What do I do ?

Solution is use a MP4 file
using cmd is an unnecessary hard work. better use the application tageditor itself. its is easy and offers variaty of tags to be edited.

Urgh. I just hate the way those video's thumbnail are generated. And I am beyond baffled and perplexed that there is no way in any OS to just change it by selecting the picture WITHIN the video itself! SERIOUSLY!

Prodedure is totally obsolete. The latest version is automated now and so a lot easier than the nonsense shown.

How about instead of a thumbnail i could chose a picture to put as an icon on a video file? not on the folder, that i know how to do, but directly on a video file

then i installed it, you need to have the video and the thumbnail in the same folder as the program then select the video, then theres and option in the program that says "Cover", you upload the picture and then hit "Save all values" thats it, thank you so much

on a mac you can literally do this with a click of a button, without downloading any software.

@@kiabias Bin folders are easily found on Linux computers. For some reason they're exceptionally difficult to find on Windows. Perhaps you're on to something with creating one. Be careful though, bin folders are dealing with the inner workings of the computer. Be sure of what you're doing.

Is there a way to change the thumbnail without having the software affected the date modified, saved or/and created of the video file? I have video from 2009 and I want to keep the date intact for archiving and reference purpose. If I changed the thumbnail, the date of video changed to the current date I commited it.
As a dirty fix for this issue, you can just set your PC to be manual time as opposed to grabbed from the internet. Set the datetime to the last edit datetime of your video, commit the thumbnail change and then turn back on internet datetime on your PC.
@@ashbash159 I have found the solution previously. I can use "Attribute Changer" software to manually change the date and time of created, modified and accessed of the file, in case the files have changed info.
I also use "MP3Tag" software to change any video thumbnail or cover art that I want without affecting the date of modified file (the option to preserve modification date must be enabled).

It works for me! BUT the big question is: Why when I send the video to a private chat on viber or facebook, the thumbnail changes again with a random frame??? I've always used "Tag&Rename" for these things and until about a month ago, everything was fine! And all the clips I've sent to friends have been received as they should and seen by them too, just with that thumbnail I've put in! But since a month, it doesn't work anymore and I can't explain it in any way!?🤔🤔🤔
There is no tageditor.exe file.

This is an awful tutorial. I had to run through many hoops to finally figure it out. Think from the perspective of the first time user experience. You can't be skipping steps like that.
