I agree tires are the most important upgrades. Towards the end of the video, I changed to 30 deg slick front and 20 deg wide radial rear. Handling was massively improved.
Enjoy the trophy truck! If I must choose between oh32x02 vs mr-03, I would definitely go with the truck! It's much more interesting to build and run, and it can run in more places.
@@sammybaka do you have any recommendations for upgrades i should get (i already got the servo saver and aluminum alloy suspension) i am thinking about making a custom shell, getting the metal driveshaft a speaker for it (i bought the nitro hobbies one so idk if it comes with one i will have to wait for it to arrive to see), a led light bar and idk if there is anything else i should get or if i should get any of the stuff i just said so some recommendations would be very helpful.
@@26eckhat11 For the truck, I think the upgraded alloy shocks and dampers work really well. I think the gear differential is very functional too but I needed to do a lot of work to make it work reliably. Out of the box there was some gear mesh issues inside the diff. AWD is priced at around $200, while RWD is $175 unless Kyosho brings out these $130 ones again in the future. AWD has its place -- it's a fun drift and grip car at home while it's harder to drive RWD easily without office-style carpet or a dedicated RCP track (i.e: foam surface). If you have a place to run RWD, I personally find racing and tuning for racing to provide a longer term appeal. Of course, there's merit to having both. I started with an ma-020, then another awd car, a rwd drift car, before getting my first rwd grip car.
Thanks for this video I'm thinking about getting into mini-z, I don't really know anything about them. My question is why you recommend this car over the much cheaper Trueno initial D car? I looked for reviews on the initial D car and couldn't find any negatives. What am I missing? Thanks for your help Currently I have heavily modified scx24's and charisma gt24 rally cars
Thank you. There have been a few AE86 releases from Kyosho recently, but one of them was the "First Mini-Z" series which doesn't have much performance or upgrade paths ($50 but don't buy it). The good AE86 was on the MA-020 AWD platform (~$200). MR-03 RWD is around $175 and unfortunately I haven't seen these $130 MR-03 like this red audi r8 on the market these days. I would start with MR-03 if you have access to a Mini-Z track or at least office-style carpet and you are interested in racing. MA-020 is good for casual driving and drifting in home settings.
Because home tiles don't provide a lot of grip, due to the material and dusts, you want to use the softest radial tires for the best chance. On standard 8.5mm and 11mm wide rims, I've say kyosho 30 deg radial front and 20 deg radial rear. For better results, and assuming you have a very wide body (+3 offset) that can fit 14mm rear rims, I've had a good experience with 14mm PN super soft radial in the rear, and kyosho 20 degree radial in the front. That ran really nice for me on a clean wood surface.
@@sammybaka Thanks for your detail advise! And do you know what is the original wheel tyre sizes (To buy front 30 deg & back 20 deg) on the MR-03 Mercedes amg gt3 RTR model I have just bought? So that I would buy the correct tyre size?
Original (and also standard) is 8.5mm front and 11mm rear. I think 30/20 is a good place to start there. FYI the GT3 body is quite wide and can handle the extra wide 14mm rims in the back. That may be something you can try in the future if you need to find more grip.
It depends on the race class rules at the track. Different places may have different rules. To some people, box stock means zero mods except for wear and tear parts (tires, bearings, t-plate). Some places opt for class structure and rules defined for PN race events.
Kept getting indirect answers on other videos yours was great!
Glad you were able to find some answers! Thanks for the support!
For RWD, please change the stock tyres to radial ones asap. Now brushless motors are available. Eg. Xspeed 85 (8500kv).

Excellent starter's guide!
Thanks!! I'm hoping this will help people thinking about joining us in mini-z!
i want to get one but i already ordered a orlandoo hunter trophy truck and my mom says i can only buy one rc car

What batteries should I get?
For racing, PN or Team Orion 750mah batteries.
Flipping the kingpins isn’t allowed some places???

Just how FUN are they compared to say a 1/10 scale car?
I haven't done 1:10 stuff before so I can't say. I imagine both are fun but in different ways. It's all about whether there's a community around you.
Класс!!! 👍👍👍
I have the old mini-Z overland. This series is the worst lineup since it can neither go off-road (no 4x4 configuration) nor racing (lacks low CG).
I've never seen one in person. I didn't know it's not awd. That's too bad.
dont buy this cash trap there are much better 1/28 scale products out there
