I raced kyosho mini z for few years. These cars are strong. Never broke any parts. Its expensive but its worth it. Its the same as a 1/5 scale or 1/10 scale touring car but smaller. Fun to race in the winter
I broke differential, chassis on mini z (long time use) i never by miniz too much expensive, parts to wl toys is not perfect but its the best deal (battery lithiom, autonomi, power, lot part ...)
I think getting a GL chassis would be a much better solution. Upgrade parts are already there. You would need your upgraded motor and electronics. Much better starting point and really ends up being cheaper vs. buying all those hop- ups.
The truck proves it. Drifting is a style competition not racing. Sliding around looks cool but is much slower. Probably also why the mini z is slower also. So if sliding is the goal get the mini.
Great vid and nice use of the track. My K969 currently out of action as the spur gear chewed up the lipo lead but whilst I like it find it understeers a lot and perhaps would have done better with the 989. Might try open diff front to see if that helps
Cant wait to get my little wltoys green drift truck...i am impressed with how well you drove it completely stock...seems totally locked in...Great job!😊
Great comparison. I enjoy the humor too. I just ordered a 969. I had extra money, and really wanted to be able to justify buying a mini z...but: 1) this is my first drift rc. maybe i suck, or i hate it 2) the mini z had no (out of the box) gyroscope 3) the mini z ran on AAA batteries. That's pretty naff for a $200 car. So i'll recieve my 969 on tuesday, and if i like it, i'll upgrade to brushless, add an ESC, etc... I really like the mini z looks and the quality of the build, but for the compromises AND the higher price, I decided to go with the 969.
I have the WLToys K989 Truck but I'd rather have a Mini Z. Currently my K989 burns up after being ran for just a few minutes and I haven't had the time to take it apart and see what's binding. So it just sits and collects dust. With a Mini Z I know it would work as intended right out of the box.
Sounds super circumstantial. I wouldn’t base your opinion off a burnt up esc or motor or whatever. It’s unfortunate but that could easily happen from any rc brand.
Tracks looking good! Sweet onbody camera cuts and that finger pointer 😂! Have you treated your carpet at all? For our portable carpet track we give it a light coat of spray silicone.
Cheers dude. I knew people would like the pointer 😅. I’ve not treated the carpet, I use it for all sorts of cars, so don’t want to make it too slippery. It’s pretty cheap stuff anyway, so I’ll replace it if it gets too worn 👍
I love on the wltoys that you can extend the wheelbase. There is an extra gear that’s a little longer and you basically push the axle assembly to the next holes back. You can’t mount the stock body but you can mount some air fix body’s. I have an Nissan Silvia s15 body that fits perfectly.
That r32 with the hks livery is just beautiful only thing I wish they did different is not those types of batteries and had lipos u could put in like the other
Do the mini z wheels fit the wltoys driveshaft's , Phil? Good timing as I was just trying to suss this out from online pics yesterday . The little keyway in the mini z wheels looks the same as the wltoys but I haven't given it a go yet. 👍
Yes, Mini-Z AWD wheels fit Wltoys perfectly and you can use any offset without binding. The original offset on Wltoys is 1.5mm in case you are wondering.
The open dif has a better hook up and regains traction after a satisfying drift. The locked dif's definitely want to keep the car sliding longer but probably requires less throttling and more sailing so to speak
I do own a Mini Z RWD, AWD, FWD and Mini Z Buggy. For the Mini Z FWD you can actually convert it to AWD or RWD to your liking and for the Mini Z Buggy, I have bought a set of drift tires for it plus you can convert the buggy from AWD to RWD(And maybe FWD?). But with the AWD chassis You can convert it to RWD or maybe FWD(adding extra weight to the front).

I'm waiting for my K989 to arrive (this week?) and I downloaded a bunch of wheels and tires to 3d print. One set caught my attention and made me wonder what if I make them like a fan? AWD means they're going to suck the air from under the body, potentially both cooling electronics and increasing downforce... I considered getting the truck but: same battery, extra load! They even say it lasts a couple minutes less than the others, plus (again) with the same battery it will have to split the voltage, making it slower. Now, whether that's going to be noticeable or not is another matter, but that's how I decided what model to buy XD

A reasonably cheap upgrade to the WLToys may well be swapping out the kit electronics for a HW 1625 esc and your favourite receiver/controller.
GREAT UPGRADE ✌️
