The S23 is £900 for the 256GB model in the UK! The same OPPO Find N2 Flip is £850 (also 256GB/8GB), so for me, in my region, if I want a smaller phone, then the OPPO is a solid alternative. Though it depends on when you buy the S23, as pre-order deals are now closed. Obviously, the US has very limited choice because of their anti-consumer smartphone market.
The 4k30 selfie video looks SO much better in the Galaxy, wow. I've been an iPhone user for almost 10 years, and I'm shocked at how extremely processed it looked compared to the Galaxy.
It's worth mentioning when reviewers mention the 45w charging, in the case of Samsung its just marketing. It makes about 10 minutes difference on charge time because most of the time it's not charging at 45w. Get a OnePlus, Oppo for actual Super Fast Charging. Samsung's implementación is a bit bigger a con.
Great review! The S23 seems like a great phone. I switched from the S21 to a Pixel 7 and I'm loving the experience so far. For me, the Pixel exclusive features make it worth it over the Galaxy... but man do I miss Samsung Dex! I used it all the time.
I upgraded from an iPhone 11 to the S23. The iPhone 11 was actually my first iPhone. Each brand has their pros and cons. I decided to go back to Samsung because the camera options on the S23 are nearly identical to the 14 pro, and $200 cheaper. Everything else is practically the same experience. That blue text comes at a premium! S23 has been great so far. Don't miss the retina display at all!
Good for you. Most people are too prideful to switch from iPhone to Android. Lol people always wanna keep up with the Jones's and "be cool" and have an iphone because all their favorite celebrities have one. Or whatever the reason. Its just a fact that an android can do anything an iphone can do and more.
I'm glad that I settle for just the regular S23 and Im loving it so far. Also just wanted to show some love here under this video few weeks back when I wanted to upgrade my phone the RUclips algorithm for once did a great job recommend me to watch your video review and I can honestly come here and write that your review really did help me put those last decision nails to just go ahead and just upgrade to the regular S23 so thanks Matt.
Hey I have a doubt, Samsung said they have partnership with main social media apps which enables to use alternative cams within the app like snapchat and instagram. Is that feature included in S23 too (non ultra)?
7:43 Dear Matthew, do you know what the dynamic range is? Because from your samples that's NOT what iPhone has more of. Quite the opposite, iPhone was much more likely to crush the shadows or overexpose bright areas.
I'd be tempted to go that route and try to do with less but I want more storage than 256. I looked at my phone's storage now, and I'd be cutting it close with about 50gbs short of 256. I feel I always get the flagship because of FOMO, but I honestly don't need the ultra.
You could get some network attached storage device (even just an old PC in the DMZ in router settings and the proper port(s) forwarded. I agree though, it's nice to have local storage and more is better. But you can do things like only keep music that is your absolute favorite or stuff that is hard to find, and for the rest just use RUclips Music or whatever streaming service floats your boat. I don't even bother trying to stream stuff from myself anymore, just have about 10GB of tunes on the device out of 92GB on my other storage, all on my 128GB phone,
I'm loving my s23, coming from an apple 14 pro max user. It's feels like a regular pro and hands down it feels good in the hand. Great cameras, great sound, beautiful screen and smooth software. Worth the buy.
5:37 for the color balance. In your example, I totally agree that the iPhone 14 is more accurate and more natural. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t mean to be mean or disrespectful in any way. But interestingly, I watched another video where they used a mixed East-and-Southeast-Asian(?) person as the subject for the photo comparison. While not the exact same phone (it’s the 14Pro vs. the S23U), Samsung is actually more accurate with a bit more yellow, while Apple makes the skin look a bit white and dull. So, the person’s skin tone may be a factor in deciding which phone color balance is more accurate. Edit: timestamp
Absolutely! I find Samsung and most Chinese phones obviously do a better job with Asian skin tones and make most white people look a bit yellow. Where it's the total opposite with iPhone. Pixel is pretty good and getting things right
What you mentioned about the duplicated apps and functions in the previous video was right. I can't believe almost 50gb are taken by the O.S. So yes, the 128gb version should be avoided.
When I first run my s23 and look to the capacity it was only 38 gb system but after some updates it becomes over 42 gb so I think some apps just normal apps but the file analysis think it's system but its not
@MatthewMoniz. How does it compare to the S10 which I have. Thinking about getting the S23 although my S10 is just fine. Is the S23 about the same size as S10. I know the battery is bigger on the 23. Are there any downsides compared to S10 which suits my usage just fine.
Writing this comment from a base s23, got it 3 days ago and can't point a fault honestly. I'm someone who gets motion sick with 120hz so I put the display at 60hz and the battery is a dream, it lasts all day and the phone is powerfull enough for everything you can throw at it. I'm coming from a oneplus 8, 6t,3t and One and was sick of the software and size, could honestly not have asked for a better upgrade! Get this if you enjoy small phones, get the plus or the ultra otherwise, you'll not be disappointed with a s23 series. And no I was not paid to write this 😂
I bought the 128gb version because I didn't know the difference in memory speeds, but I'm loving the phone and I wonder if the regular user can notice any difference. It would be cool a comparison video between them
I got the 128GB version, about a week now. No issues and its pretty fast, no lags and no heat. Previous phone was the S9, so I wanted to keep the same form factor.
It makes absolutely no difference. At all. Anyone who says otherwise is straight up lying or being fooled. It's not noticeable for phone use (that might change in 3-4 years).
I cant tell the different in speaker quality between the two. Maybe if you played them side by side? Also, I hated the weight of the 13 and 14 phones, they feel like twice as heavy my S23.
You can always get an iPhone 13 Mini and get an actual small phone, even that is barely "small" just somewhat reasonably sized. We used to have flagships with 4" and smaller screens, now everything is massive.
S23 any day of the week even if the Ultra was the same price. It has such a nice looking design with the uniform bezels and it's compact! Think I need to move away from Pixels finally as since the Pixel 5 I've found them too big and too heavy.
Man this has almost similar dimensions to the s8 plus which was one of my all time favorite phones - but it’s sad that this is considered small these days cause I remember the s8+ being a huge phone. I miss the days of smaller screens and smaller hardware honestly. Matt - still think this is worth it in 2024? I’d be putting down my 13 pro max which has no issues but I’ve been wanting to get back into android and a smaller frame.
Got the s23 on preorder with the free storage upgrade to 256. My two problems with it is it’s so small, it turns sideways in my pocket sometimes and I’m not used to all buttons being on the right side. Annoying consider I favor left but small adaption to it. Should be ok. The display is the fairly similar to my old note 8 so it didn’t bother me as well as I didn’t want all the ultra extras that are irrelevant to me and will just eat battery. I wanted the plus but $400, 85 down for a brand new s23 with 256 storage? Can’t beat that

Hi I think that the Plus model is being ignored, because its too much the same as S23. What the should do is offer different features such as 1) Instead of FHQPlus instead have QHD Plus, so it can easily challenge the iPhone Pro 2) instead of having 3 cameras in the rear, have 4, while the Ultra has 5 4) Even thou the Plus does have S Pen build into it like the Ultra, you still use the S Pen 5) when you buy online from Samsung you only can get Graphine or Lime Green. The Plus should either offer another colour either the Sky Blue or Red, as the Ultra offer 4 colours online from Ssmsung. 6) Ref to above 5 when you buy online from Samsung you can get the 1TB with 12Ram, as options. And the s23 512GB
I kinda disagree. That would be differentiating the series too much. Samsung will cut corners and features in the base variant to sell the costlier plus. The people who buy base version will feel like they are sacrificing too much just for a compact phone. Having similar specs in base and plus is the best way, but samsung should reduce the price difference a bit
What I don't get with the S23 is how they advertise the addtl 200mAh battery as an improvement, when they took out 300mAh battery from the S21 to the S22.
Went from s21 ultra to s23. I was ready for something smaller and lighter. And boy is this lighter. I'm getting very similar battery life. I always thew my s21 on the charger in the evening, and I do the same with this. So no issues for me
I'm really surprised about the iPhone video here. Really expected it to be less contrasty and not so bright. Do you have an HDR setting on your iPhone for video? Though it depends on when you buy the S23, as pre-order deals are now closed. Obviously, the US has very limited choice because of their anti-consumer smartphone market.
I hear Germany doesn't allow Oppo phones to be sold... some dumb software patent nonsense?
Yeah but oppos have crap OS.. so much extra nonsense, or at least they used to ive had oppo phones before not a great experience
@@aadi8568 they are much better now. In fact, color OS is my favorite skin. It would be worth retrying as I have come away. Impressed.
Did you use a 128 or 256 Go version of the S23 ? that could explain the lower result in some benchmark (UFS3.1 vs UFS4.0)
256gb is a must. Samsung plops on like 50gb of bloatware (and for the andriod OS)
YES THANK YOU finally some love for the small phone users
Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Ryan Reynolds and Daniel LaBelle had a child together? Great video!
It's really sad that 6.1" is considered a small phone nowdays.. i wish that were some good 5" options out there
thats what she said (i hope?)
Nice review, where do you get those wallpapers from?
The 4k30 selfie video looks SO much better in the Galaxy, wow. I've been an iPhone user for almost 10 years, and I'm shocked at how extremely processed it looked compared to the Galaxy.
I have an S22 Ultra and my wife just got the S23 Plus and yeap the sound difference is crazy! Great review!
Worth upgrading to this from redmi k20?
Great review! The S23 seems like a great phone. I switched from the S21 to a Pixel 7 and I'm loving the experience so far. For me, the Pixel exclusive features make it worth it over the Galaxy... but man do I miss Samsung Dex! I used it all the time.
@@whatisthis7688 The fingerprint on the pixel 7 is trash, dump it asap and get the s23 plus not the s23 ... way better battery and performance

THE WAY YOU DEMONSTRATED THE DIFFERENCE IN SPEAKER SOUND BETWEEN THE S23 AND S23 ULTRA, WAS INTELLEGENTLY DONE.
@nwyujs yup i get it lol and some people prefer a blue message over a green one 🤷♂️😫

I wanted a 6" phone and perordered this s23...aaaand it's a terrific phone. it's just as you described. 👍🏻
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! Thanks for watching
Got this coming from an S8. Happy days.
I really like base S series. thanks for the review, Matthew! 👌
My pleasure!
i like thata the s22 and s23 are really preamium feelling and looking but not flashy at all
Hey I have a doubt, Samsung said they have partnership with main social media apps which enables to use alternative cams within the app like snapchat and instagram. Is that feature included in S23 too (non ultra)?
I have s23 and i dont see any options to change cameras on instagram
@@scarykisser you have to pinch zoom in and out to change lenses i guess
@@rahulcuthbert that actually worked thanks. Only for ultrawide tho. Guess cant use telephoto on insta.
7:43 Dear Matthew, do you know what the dynamic range is? Because from your samples that's NOT what iPhone has more of. Quite the opposite, iPhone was much more likely to crush the shadows or overexpose bright areas.
wow that battery life is pretty impressive. i think it can match last years s22+. just shows how efficient the 8 gen 2 is.
wutchu mean match? its like 10% better (bigger battery helps too)
7:43 more dynamic range on the iPhone? What are you smoking?

I love the new camera design I'm happy they got rid of the camera housing they should keep that style for a while
Solid review as usual.
Much appreciated!
Just got myself one, huge step up from my S9 that I was using for many years.
I'm loving my s23, coming from an apple 14 pro max user. It's feels like a regular pro and hands down it feels good in the hand. Great cameras, great sound, beautiful screen and smooth software. Worth the buy.
worth the buy to view outdoors
Yup! It's quite ridiculous. You'll have to spend some time de-samsunging the phone
@@MatthewMoniz read my comment
When I first run my s23 and look to the capacity it was only 38 gb system but after some updates it becomes over 42 gb so I think some apps just normal apps but the file analysis think it's system but its not
The space taken is because of the calculation from bytes to Gigabytes conversion, not because real space is taken up
Wow, my link to twitter has been deleted twice, I was linking golden reviewer's tweet explaining this
@MatthewMoniz. How does it compare to the S10 which I have. Thinking about getting the S23 although my S10 is just fine. Is the S23 about the same size as S10. I know the battery is bigger on the 23. Are there any downsides compared to S10 which suits my usage just fine.
wondering the exact same thing but with my Note 8 that is serving me just fine minus sort of being tired of the huge size!
Watching this on my S23, it's really worth it upgrading from S22
I don't think its worth upgrading from S22 only difference is slightly better battery life

*The Green S23+ is a MUST* 😫👏🏻
Writing this comment from a base s23, got it 3 days ago and can't point a fault honestly.

Hola , pero a 120 también dura todo el día. Por supuesto que a 60 va a durar un poco más.
Yo Marques, are you going to talk about the strange camera blur phenomenon on s23/s23+?
I bought the 128gb version because I didn't know the difference in memory speeds, but I'm loving the phone and I wonder if the regular user can notice any difference. It would be cool a comparison video between them
Is it fast I've just ordered s21 5gb 128gb too. How is the ufs 3.1. I have s21 plus at this stage no complaints fast too
I got the 128GB version, about a week now.

I’d like to see how the speakers in S23 stack up against the iPhone 14. Cuz I always heard that Apple nails the speakers in their devices.
Yeahh, this is one of the reason i choose iphone. Speaker quality on samsung kind a bit dealbreaker for me
I cant tell the different in speaker quality between the two. Maybe if you played them side by side? Also, I hated the weight of the 13 and 14 phones, they feel like twice as heavy my S23.
@@srobeck77 Hmm that’s interesting. I would like to hold the S23 and see the difference in weight.
So funny that this is considered a small phone. It gives me carpel tunnel! Thank goodness for the one-handed thing from good lock.
Still too big for my hands. Going for iphone 13 mini
THe mini does feel nice in the hand I just can't do a screen that size anymore. It's a good phone though!
Mini is the “Best Small Phone” because it’s the only true small phone on the market 🙌
You can always get an iPhone 13 Mini and get an actual small phone, even that is barely "small" just somewhat reasonably sized. We used to have flagships with 4" and smaller screens, now everything is massive.
Great video mathew.. loved it
Thanks a ton!
I feel a lot better watching this review; I was going to jump for the Ultra, but this one still looks reasonable.

And turn off aod as well
Nice job and thanks for checking out the speakers ...thinking it wold be cool to see the s23 vs Pixel 7
@Matthewmoniz. great so what do I do
S23 any day of the week even if the Ultra was the same price. It has such a nice looking design with the uniform bezels and it's compact! Think I need to move away from Pixels finally as since the Pixel 5 I've found them too big and too heavy.
Yeah, I wish Google would make a flagship small phone…
Cant wait to go pick up my s23 today!
How much storage is used by un-uninstallable bloatware?
You can uninstall most stuff but around 50gb
@@MatthewMoniz thank you for checking. BTW, around 50gb after uninstalling stuff or before doing it? :)

Hi
I think that the Plus model is being ignored, because its too much the same as S23.
What the should do is offer different features such as
1) Instead of FHQPlus instead have QHD Plus, so it can easily challenge the iPhone Pro
2) instead of having 3 cameras in the rear, have 4, while the Ultra has 5
4) Even thou the Plus does have S Pen build into it like the Ultra, you still use the S Pen
5) when you buy online from Samsung you only can get Graphine or Lime Green.
Coming from the S9 it feels like a huge phone. The S9 was the perfect size smartphone I swear
What I don't get with the S23 is how they advertise the addtl 200mAh battery as an improvement, when they took out 300mAh battery from the S21 to the S22.
Do you recommend upgrading from an S21?
First!!
Finally I m the first one to comment
Went from s21 ultra to s23. I was ready for something smaller and lighter. And boy is this lighter. I'm getting very similar battery life. I always thew my s21 on the charger in the evening, and I do the same with this. So no issues for me
I'm really surprised about the iPhone video here. Really expected it to be less contrasty and not so bright. Do you have an HDR setting on your iPhone for video? The 14 never takes videos like that unless it's edited or has a setting that makes the video look different. Some of the highlights also look blown up on the iPhone
Compare this to the pixel 7?
Love the design...it is like the iPhone we never got after 11
Seeing this really makes me regret not getting the 11 Pro instead of the Pro Max.
