I think that game is usually pretty good at making the ambush spawns not feel horrendously cheap, either by giving you a warning of where they are coming from or by putting them in places where you'd have to be playing to game badly to be jumped by them. There are a few instances of them being unfair, (I'm raising both my middle fingers to those damn fighters that spawn when Echidna does), but I would say that overall it's an aspect that the game handles better than other games.
Me: I hate 10 mages ambushing me all at once.

It's actually one of my least favorite games because of it. Especially in missions with lots of recruitable enemy units, especially Hero of the Western Isles, you'll just restart, and restart, and restart, until you realize exactly where to put every unit. Chapter 10B is even worse, because Gonzales is now included with the rest of the bullshit.

how is it possible to prefer awakening to fates BR? Birthright is an excellent game , awakening is a joke. I also dont get how sacred stones can be put above blazing blade. And 3H on the top ? (hard mode is far too easy).

I also hate how Three Houses constantly reuses maps, however i think the reason for it is due to the zoom in feature. If you zoom in you can see that all of the maps have insane amounts of detail put into them, more so than any other map in fire emblem. It isn't like they have preset tiles such as in the gba games with your sand tile, your castle tile and your desert tile. Hell there's even stuff that you would miss if you didn't zoom in such as the Church Golems in the Sealed Forest, Flayn being behind the Death Knight in chapter 6 or the Russian writing on the walls of Shambala. Also cool how when you fight in the Enbarr palace, if you zoom into the throne room it looks exactly the same as the room you see Edelgard coronated in on CF.
Edit: One thing i want to add on relating to fe4. Gen 1 of the Manga improves the experience even more when re-playing. After reading the manga and re-playing, i was really invested in Characters like Tailtyu and Azel, who have barely any dialouge in the actual game and are left as rather one note, but are fully fleshed out in the manga with them facing hardships, having motivations and backstories and the like. It makes all of the characters much more enjoyable, instead of only having Sigurd, Quan, and Lewyn be the only fully fleshed out characters.
Yeah the Manga adds a pretty good feel when you re-played the game, it's a shame that the traslations are at the start of chapter 7.
People tend to forget that the zoom in feature exists since it's not very useful, but yeah there is a surprising amount of detail on each map when you look through it. Also when zoomed in you realize that the maps are just massive. It definitely added to the development time of the maps.
But I also think that people tend to underplay how many maps Three Houses has. I was counting every map I could remember and I counted 36 unique maps. That's more maps than a lot of older Fire Emblem games have (and I also could have missed some). It's really the paralogues and auxiliary battles that are the culprits of map reuse. It certainly would have been nice if they were all unique maps, but man that would have been a lot of work.
Holy shit yes, the Manga is super fun. My only grip is there is a lot of incest tendencies but is FE4 after all.
I didn’t realize there was a manga. As someone who was a bit intimidated by the maps in 4 but wanted the story, would the manga be a good first experience, or should I play the game first and then read the manga?

Unlike most FE villains he isn't possesed or manipulated, he just lost hope in humanity and believes that dragons would be better rulers. I don't really understand how he's a bad villain: he's intimidating, has a cool backstory, a great theme and he makes for a cool bossfight. How is he bad?
The list is pretty much what I expected a tier list from Mangs would look like. Can't really say I agree with a lot of what Mangs says on each specific game or their placement, but it is his opinion and I respect where he's coming from.

to be fair the Black Knight's motivations are simple but make sense in path of radiance, but Nergal's motivations are contradictory and illogical
@@davidtolbert8446 That's the point. The continuous use of Dark Magic in the Elibe Fire Emblems has a strong propensity to make them FORGET about WHY they wanted power in the first place. Nergal wanted to initially reclaim his children, which he did, but he forgot that this is what he wanted in the first place, and just sought more power for the sake of power. He wanted to harvest his children to summon even more powerful dragons, which he would then harvest to become the most powerful being in the world. It didn't make any sense, but that's precisely what Dark Magic does to a person. It can erase their personality and make them forget their initial purpose and motivation : the magic gives the person power, but can consume it in the process. Which is where the irony lies : what is power without purpose? Bramimond may be one of the only Dark Magic users to have sufficient mastery to be able to not forget about why he wanted power (to slay Dragons and protect humanity), but he's an exceptional case because he was very well aware of how carefully such magic has to be approached. He also lost most of his personality in the process, but still kept his reason.
@@sumerian88 No that's really not the point. Literally nothing Nergal does ever makes sense. The fact that Nergal's use of dark magic made him forget what he actually wanted is fine, and could have been interesting if better developed, but it does explain the b.s. about Nergal's teleportation abilities, the fact that he could have just killed the party at any time, the fact that he had what he needed to summon the dragons for a big chunk of the game but didn't because that would have ended the plot. The "Dark magic made him crazy" excuse can only go so far. You should check out Mekkah's FE 7 plot video series, at least the video on Nergal, because if you don't stop to analyze his motivations in the story it can be easy to miss how stupid and poorly written he actually is.

If Sacred Stones ever gets a remake, which it should, I hope we get about a dozen more chapters.
Sacred Stones is held back by the fact that is simply missing more. There are times were the group just travels somewhere seemingly free of conflict or struggle. Eirika just walks into Jehenna, Ephraim just walks out of Grado, together they just walk back into the palace in Renais.
Plus Eirika and Ephraim take so much of the development in the game, I just wish there was more for everyone else.
Sacred Stones got me started on Fire Emblem and i want it so badly on the switch

@@Mangs1337 if you lose all your units on one side and have an enemy stand between the elevator and the ground, the elevator can't move. This isn't a problem if you've already used the dragon vein. But if you haven't, you have to restart the map.

@@sauce4279 You don't even need to lose any units to get softlocked in that part iirc. One time in one of my playthrough one of the elevators just simply stopped working for some reason so I had to reset the game.

There's a reason some people call the Wii a "Gamecube with motion controls". I do agree, that Radiant Dawn looks much better than PoR, I don't think that's because of the hardware, however.

The animations of Path of Radiance look really stiff an awkward for the Gamecube though. The animations on the 3DS are leaps above it and the 3DS is actually slightly weaker than the Gamecube.

Shadow Dragon: "The animations suck but I don't care that much."
At least with Shadow Dragon you can see what's happening. With PoR, you get nothing, so yeah, no real point. Also, Shadow Dragon's animations are at a decent speed. PoR's aren't.
Shadow Dragon animations are just bad 3d model, PoR animations show no data and are incredibly slow. Even on map animations are absolutely tediously slow.
I think that wouldn't be so bad if the disparity wasn't so huge. Animations not being great and numbers not showing up is apparently enough to drop a game by about 12 spots.
You can skip the animations in shadow dragon/turn them off, cant do that in PoR.
They both suck in their own ways of animation and models. For me, SD has a certain charm to it while PoR is just straight up lifeless and blocky.

I love path of radiance man, its gotta be in at least my top three if not number one. The story in my opinion is very engaging and believable. I totally believe every single character. And it breaks the mold in so many ways going from rag tag team of mercenaries to winning the war just so much fun along the way. With some great writing for the supports whether I'd be lethe meeting new beroc like ziahark to making her believe that they are good. Or Jill leaving the echo chamber of Daien and discovering new beliefs. It also deals with hard subjects like racism and revenge, death and finding family amongst friends. There is no giant dragon taking over the world, it's just war. I love it.

Out of all the games I want to be adapted into a movie/TV show, Genealogy is definitely #1. The story is just begging to get a Game of Thrones style treatment.

I was really surprised how low Awakening was on the list, I haven't played all the FE games, but I actually really enjoyed Awakening a lot. I might go as far as to call it my favorite in the series, that I have played.
I really think the pair up mechanic is kind of cool, I think that the idea of pairing units together to exaggerate their strengths or cover their weaknesses is an interesting twist on the the old Rescue mechanic, and a fair trade off for reducing the number of units you have on the field. The fact that it also helps to facilitate the newly improved Support mechanic, which is better in Awakening than it arguably has ever been to date, which also ties in with the future children, I think is a fantastic example of gameplay-story integration. I'm being rewarded extrinsically (with stronger units and easier maps) by doing things that I naturally want to do, and that also reward me intrinsically (getting to see fun and unique support conversations and learning the backstories of my characters). This is important I think, because of the fact that during the pre-Awakening era, characters rarely got any more development or dialogue after their introduction unless they were a Lord, a major villain, or an NPC. Awakening totally changed that, and that change has remained to this day.
And as far as the future children go, yes I do agree that they are very OP compared to their parents a lot of the time, but I think the essential components you failed to mention on that point are 1. The paralogue missions for them are optional, therefore skippable/missable, 2. Most of them are hard as BALLS, especially on higher difficulties, so being rewarded with a powerful unit for going through the trouble of completing a difficult mission is a perfectly fair and acceptable reward, and 3. They generally join at a fairly low level compared to your main army, so they require feeding to get up to speed in the first place.
That being said, if there's one thing you said about Awakening that I fully agree with it's that Act 2 is really bad; I'd have to play the game again to see if the map design criticism holds up, I honestly haven't played in years, but I remember it distinctly being my least favorite part. It felt so disconnected and out of place compared to the rest of the game, almost like they came up with Act 1 and 3 and realized that it wasn't long enough, so they inserted some pointless B-plot about a foreign conqueror to pad the time.
Honestly I’d argue act 3 is the low point. Between the dumb point of Robin being the baddy’s son being pushed so much and the fight not amounting to much since Grima comes back anyways, that last act needed another script check.
Act 1 is the only one that is decent.

Conquest's story is basically "Oh shoot, they chose the bad team, how can we railroad them into the plot we spent the most time on anyway?", but they really tried to make it tough and interesting gameplay-wise. It ruins the two main characters of Fates, but I think IS (incorrectly) assumed that you wouldn't be playing Conquest for the story anyway.

I think a reason why they are slow is because it's in 3D and the Gamecube came out in 2001.
Making the overland animations slower gives the Gamecube more time to load in the battle animations. So I think they did it to ensure it would be a smooth transition and there wouldn't be an awkward lauding pause for every battle animation.

Congrats on 80k, Mangs. Being a RUclipsr is, in my opinion, one of the hardest jobs to have. No matter how much I facepalm with decisions you make in some Ironmans and games, I still admire you for the amount of time and care you give to your channel. Here's to another 80k!
PS: the first shitpost I ever saw from you before I ever played FE anything was "I'm a green unit". I still watch that to this day and it's common for my husband and I to call each other green units when we make dumb decisions or mistakes 😂

Great video Mangs. My first Fire Emblem was Awakening admittedly, and I have been playing the later iterations thus far. I would say Echoes caught me by complete surprise. The music in the title screen alone. It was beautiful and gave me the impression that the story & adventure was going to be amazing. I definitely have to play the older titles. The FE6 map where the entire remaining enemy army comes after you is absolutely the most afraid I have ever been going into a fire emblem map.
Pretty good list but honestly I feel like you gave FE 12 a bit toooo much flak, for me it fixed a lot of the weird things on Shadow Dragon with a bunch of units and specific classes feeling useless, graphics looking a little nicer and how gaiden chapters worked. I can't blame you for not liking Kris as a character but as a unit he was fun mess around with, he really felt like a test for what would become standard in the series (which I still find it's fine but avatar units could use a little more work), but the way they made his side story with the assasins was kinda cool. Difficulty is really strange imo, you got a good variety though I can't deny, the game got quite some fun challenge in some like Hard and Maniac but after maniac the game gets quite infiruating. But I still think it was one of the highlights of the series and I really want it to come to the west some day.
Still other then that it's a good list and it's nice to see FE 8 not get so much hate for once.
Nahh, Kris being trash and making characters worse like Marth and Jagen while cucking Merric out of the best friend spot makes me seethe til this day.
The hate for Kris is way overblown. It's not like they turn out to be the secret son/daughter of Medeus or something like that, like all the other self-inserts. They're just a person who helps out, and beyond taking some lines from Jagen, they don't intrude upon the story as much as people like to say they do.

Kris is presented as a good friend to Marth, but nowhere near a "soulmate", and the game's story otherwise is the exact same as it was in FE3. People really overestimate how much Kris's interjections factor into things; everything plays out the same way, and it is still very obviously Marth's story with Marth in the leading role. Kris is only a little above Mark in terms of story impact, yet people act like he turns out to be the chosen one and the true king of Archanea or something that ruins FE3 forever.
Wrong. Marth calls Kris his other half and Awakening confirms the translation is basically accurate by referring to Kris as a soulmate. FUCK A KRIS. Kris took the strategy scene, the retreat scene against Hardin is taken to be about "as long as Kris is here everyone will be safe". Kris was not needed.
Don't quote me here but, if you check Fates credits I think those who worked on map design are listed under "Level Design". IIRC there's three people, two also had the same role in Awakening, but I think a past director (PoR I believe) also worked there for Fates. FEH has one of those three working as their Level Designer (which feels consistent), but sadly Three Houses doesn't even have that specific category in its credits.

Facts conquest had really fun and good map designs. I just finished binding blade and while those maps are comically oversized the map design was still good most of the time even if they weren't entirely "fun". Now that I replay awakening (especially on hard mode) I realize just how dogshit the maps are

@@Doodoovessel Mangs allegedly pressured Goosaphone into sharing a hotel room with him at a con then got drunk and groped Goosaphone, who was also drunk. Goosaphone was a frequent collaborator with Mangs who sells her semi-nude (and possibly nude) photos on her Patreon. Various soyboys and women exiled Mangs from the FE community, ChazAria being the most vocal. Mangs stopped making videos for a month and lost a bunch of subs, made an apology, started going to therapy, and has been building his channel back up since.
The twist is that it turns out ChazAria, who likes to soapbox about defending women, has a history of pressuring girls into sex. Chaz vehemently denied accusations of coercion made against him until evidence came out then promptly changed his story, apologized, and stopped making content for 10 months. Chaz later admitted that he did indeed coerce a girl and they did have sex. So ChazAria apparently thinks we should believe all women _except_ those accusing him.
But thats why you don't see Mangs collaborating with Mekkah or others anymore and why his subs went down.
Say what you will about Fates, I certainly do. But at the very least, you have to admit that for better or worse, nearly every single map is memorable. I can vividly remember almost every single chapter and every single hurdle I had to overcome in Conquest and Birthright. Most other Fire Emblem titles don't have that. In fact, it's one of my biggest gripes with Three Houses. Even though so much of it is stellar, and most of the maps are competently designed, they lack something to make them stand out from the rest. 90% of them start to blend together after a while. Not Fates though. Whether it's, "Oh, I love this map!" Or, "Oh God, here we go with this map again." Love them or hate them, they stay in your mind. They make you think about how to beat them long after you already have. That's a quality I wish more FE games had.
Noah Lloyd I feel like all the weird maps also gave me a bunch of moments where I have to risk everything on a strategy that would only work on said map, making it a lot more memorable

My favorite has always been Radiant Dawn, the story isn't great and there's too many characters, its weakness is not having the ability to have long character revealing supports like Awakening, I believe that feature alone would bring the game up a few notches and give it more replayability.
My favorite aspects were the difficulty, the characters that did get to shine, the Laguz (always an awesome treat in my opinion) and the length, beating this game on hard feels like a real accomplishment because it's so long and difficult unless you purposely pick all of the best characters to level up (which I never did, Nolan was my main boy the whole game)
Honestly, if they modernized this game, I wouldn't really mind, but I don't think it's necessary and they'd probably ruin it by adding external levels to grind to living hell, which would defeat the difficulty and each individual choice of the games design. Imagine in chapter 2 you used all your healing items but now 3 levels later you can't heal Geoffrey enough and can't complete it without him dying because you made an amateurish mistake a few levels prior, every choice in RD has a lasting effect because there's no going back and there's no grinding outside of the story, so getting through it your way feels like an absolute accomplishment.

I'll admit I was an awakening baby. I technically played FE7 first on my schools laptop during summer driving school but I only made it like 5 chapters in but that was enough to get me into the series. Awakening will always hold a special place in my heart because it got me into the series and I love some of the characters (Lucina is best girl) but I recognize it isnt the best FE game but I'm glad enough people bought it to revive one of my favorite franchises now.
Also I like to think the dawn brigade is supposed to be a rag tag group of misfits that arent supposed to be good. But I doubt it was intentional
And about Echoes. I just dont know why but I cant get into it. I can see it's a good game it looks beautiful sounds beautiful and everything. But for some reason I just cant. I guess it's just not for me

Congratulation on 80K Mangs!!! I was really surprised about where “Path of Radiance” showed up in the list, but that’s because it is one of my favorite FE games. I love the story, the characters, and also the bonus EXP system. When it was “FE Echoes: Shadows of Valentia” was first announced and explained, I was not interested in it at all. But I finally gave it a try and really, really liked it! The story, the characters, and everything else made it one of my favorite FE games. I was an “Awakening” newbie but I’ve went back and played all the FE games now and love the series, however, it might just be because it was my first FE game but I still love “Awakening”! It definitely has a lot of issues, but I loved the characters, story, even the “waifu” mechanic. I’ve beaten a few FE games multiple times but none more than “Awakening”. I also really love “FE 4: Genealogy of the Holy War” and really hope that it gets the “Echoes” treatment like “FE: Gaiden” did.
This video portrayed to me more than anything else how deep mangs love for fire emblem goes. Every person has their favorite fire emblem and his speech about fe6 spoke to me. I’ve never even played fe6 but his feelings about that game encapsulate so many of my feeling on radiant dawn, my personal favorite. Rd is an enormously flawed game, I agreed with most of mangs opinions on it. But despite this it is a game that I love unconditionally and can come back too any day. I hope this channel hits 100k because he definitely deserves it.

Happy 80000k Mangs, I have wanted this list for so long and I am so happy to finally see your opinions on all of the games. I hope you could do a big project with someone who has also played all the fire emblem games and someday combine your rankings and make a “definitive ranking” of all the fire emblems games so we can have more conversations between different opinions and see a completely different ranking. Thank you for all the great content and hopefully we get more amazing fire emblem games so we can get more memes and more criticizing. This is why I love fire emblem and why it’s my second favorite video game franchise(first being Zelda). Below is my personal ranking of all the fire emblem games
Having grown up with Advance Wars i only got into Fire Emblem last year, and my friend whos a big fan recommended I play the GBA trilogy first, and play it backwards. So I started with Sacred Stones and then Blazing Blade and then Binding Blade, and playing them in that order really did make me fall in love with the series.
My favorite Fire Emblem is also The Binding Blade. And Roy actually is one of my favorite lords in the franchise despite having never played him in smash because he's not a super human or anything, he is a dude doing what he can concerning the task at hand and when he's not at some point, the plot doesn't wait for him to move.

I'm playing Binding Blade right now, I'm having such a good time! So excited to finish
I feel that Radiant Dawn has the best situational story in the series. The situations that it puts you in are by far the most compelling. In chapter 3, the main characters you used in the previous game are these legendary units that are far better than any of the other units you have used previously, and you get plenty of time to level them up and make them even better. You go to fight an empire far more powerful than your opponent ever was in the first game, and then you have the Dawn Brigade fight your units from the first game. The Dawn Brigade is far weaker than the Greil Mercenaries, and I feel that makes the act 3 chapters where you play as the Dawn Brigade actually the most fun. The chapter where you defend the castle from the Greil Mercenaries and the Laguz is particularly exciting. Not to mention that Elincia's Gambit is the best battle in the series hands-down.
It is a lot like how Skies of Arcadia or Tales of Symphonia have very cliche stories, but the situations you are put in and the overall journey and progression of those games give them very amazing scenarios to play through.

I honestly can't pick a favorite FE game. None of them are really perfect for me. Some of my favs of the top of my head would be FE7, Echoes, Conquest, and Radiant Dawn. Not sure about 3 houses yet since I only played it once on normal mode which was way too easy. Currently playing through Thracia 776 (on easy mode abusing save states lol) and am enjoying myself so far. That's the only Fire Emblem game other than the original versions of FE 1, 2, and 3 I haven't beaten yet.

As you were saying at the end of the video, it's kind of crazy that you're making a living off of a Fire Emblem RUclips channel, but it's inspirational in a way. I love ranking games, so I didn't need your invite to do it at the end, but I'm glad you did. I have played all of the mainline Fire Emblem games except for 1 and 2, though I do love listening to their soundtracks. I love that chip tune catchiness. This list will be in order from best to worst, and it is the first time I've thought this hard about my favorite Fire Emblem games.
1. Genealogy
2. Thracia 776
This two I only played for the first time in the last few months. I was scared off by how different Genealogy sounded, and while I wasn't scared of Thracia's difficult, I wasn't going to be stupid and play it without playing Genealogy first. I'm so glad I played them. These are the two masterpieces on this list for me. They are very closely ranked, and it's kind of hard for me to say that one is better than the other.
3. Blazing Sword
4. Sacred Stones
5. Binding Blade
Blazing Sword was my first Fire Emblem, so I played a lot of that and Sacred Stones when I was younger. Therefore, the GBA Fire Emblem games are very comforting to me. I played Binding Blade years later, and maybe if I had played it first then I would like it more, but I still really do enjoy it. However, Binding Blade is the only game where I warp skipped chapters on my first playthrough. I usually try to avoid warping skipping or cheesing the first time I play a game because I want to get the full experience of the map, but there were just a few maps in Binding Blade that I looked at and really didn't want to play.
It gets a little more iffy from here. Meaning my opinion could change depending on how I feel that day, but the games will stay around the same spot. Awakening isn't suddenly going to be my least favorite Fire Emblem.
