      I agree. If I bought one it would be for dinghy sailing, where I want something that's a good size ,easy to grip with wet hands or sailing gloves and quick and easy to deploy and cut rope or sail in an emergency. Maybe my next birthday...

    My 2023 built copy came with perfect detent. Initially, it felt a bit hard but it "mellowed out" after some KPL and working the action a bit. It's honestly a pleasure to "push button" the flipper now and reverse flicking is not a problem. I never thought that axis type of lock could flip so good. The XR action is amazing! It's better than Axis Lock on every Benchmade that I own! By the way, I was able to move the clip to the left side using a Torx T18 bit. I bought the knife because it was on sale for $96 and ended up liking it more than I thought I would. Perfect blade centering too! The T6 scale screws are really the only downer. It might just give my Adamas a run for its money!

    I love knives like this for winter carry. Being Canadian we wear thick gloves in the winter and having the extra girth helps to keep a secure grip. Most thinner profile knives get lost in hand and if they aren't aggressively textured they can slip. So no don't get rid of any texturing and being a large knife is great.

      The problem with this knife for Canadian,is the XR lock button area gets filled with snow,making it extremely hard to close when this happens.

    Let me say, WOW this is a beast in every aspect! This is not what I expected from SOG when I stumbled across it scrolling through knife images. As of now I dont know anything about this knife other than what ive seen in pics and here in this video but I do know Ive got to have it. I work in our National Parks through winter and due to extreme coldness, ice, and all around wetness the MEGA jimping is what sold me. For sure I will have gloves on when using this beast. Lol. SOG did their bet to over build this and they did it right!

    I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those. I have a SOG Terminus XR that I do like, but I am inclined to carry something a bit bigger. As much as it seems that SOG is trying to turn over a new leaf, they billboarding on the pocket clips is holding them back. I would love to see them do an XR lock, 3.5 ~ 4 inch S30V/S35VN drop point with G10 or Micarta scales, some sculpting, and good pocket clip. I think it would be a home run.

    SOG!! 17:32 Haha!! 🤣 The first SOG I owned was the Seal Pup from the late 90's in 440C, it's still in mint condition and fits perfect in hand, and the blade serrations are wicked pointy with coarse texturing on the handle that doesn't destroy my hand. Another SOG that I feel didn't get the recognition it deserved was the Northwest Ranger. I love that damn knife, and interesting enough it has a neutral shaped handle that lets you place your fingers where you want unlike The Seal Pup, and this Seal XR. Always love SOG...but yeah, I agree with this vid. Unless you're using this knife as aconcealable quick use tactical self defense weapon...it be a bitch using this thing out in the field, bare handed, for hours on end. Still love SOG.

The first thing when I saw the thumbnail was, it’s a folding Seal Pup! Even though I’m now retired from the army, I’ll probably get one just because my affection for the Pup.

    On the occasions when you REALLY need a knife, is better for it to be uncomfortable to use and be absolutely sure that you won't drop it, and as others have said this one is made assuming you are wearing thick gloves. I wouldn't use it for everyday carry.
    If you look at medieval rondel daggers, they had BIG and pointy studs in the handle, really painful to use, but they would not fall out of your hand no matter how much sweat and blood was in them, because the only time you would use those daggers was the proverbial stuff hit the fan for realsies.

It checks off all the things that the seal xr is missing.. g10 scales, way better pocket clip, doesnt scream sog at you.. which i know is really weird for a sog. And the blade steel is cts xhp. MC , I know you're not big on the tactical stuff so that's probably why you don't see the reason's for the established finger grooves , aggressive jimping & the shape/ design of the pocket clip. That striking pommel or "persuader tool" as S.O.G. likes to call it is the reason for everything previously mentioned. A full power hammer fist strike down creates a lot of force especially on solid/ hard object's ( like a🥥 coconut) , that's why a huge hex bolt is used to support the back spacer too. The bend in the pocket clip is another finger groove for your middle finger when held in reverse grip. Don't think this tool is just for cutting , think of it as a survival tool that is for striking/ hammering as well as for cutting & the design of this knife makes perfect sense.

    • @pauldayton5285
      @pauldayton5285 3 года назад

      The AD-10 isn't designed to be "tactical" & shouldn't really be compared to the S.O.G. The Seal XR was designed by Navy Seals to be a "tactical" knife. A Clip point blade will penatrate better than a drop point. The XR lock makes the knife operable with one hand & the flipper gets the blade out a lot faster than the Tri-ad lock & that matters in a life & death fight. Than there is the striking pommel or "persuader tool" that the AD-10 doesn't have. Two great knives just made for different purposes & really shouldn't be compared to each other , that's just my opinion.

    This is definitely marketed to the military. I can't speak for all the services, but in the Army, wearing gloves in the field is mandatory in most, if not all units. The pocket clip might put additional wear on the pants pocket, but that's preferable to reaching for your knife and finding it gone because it slipped out when you were low-crawling through the brush.

    • @metal_complex

      Marketed AS an item that COULD be used by the military... but its actually being marketed to the general public. Well over 95% of the people buying this thing are just regular civilians. I'm sure soldiers will love it, but it won't work for the vast majority of the hands it actually ends up in.

    • @EDC_Soldier
      @EDC_Soldier 3 года назад

      @@metal_complex point taken. I didn't even consider that angle. There are definitely a lot of civilians who will scoop these up for exactly those reasons, and I'm sure that SOG is counting on it to make their sales goal. That's why I do a hard eye roll every time I browse the knife selection at the military clothing sales store and see that the majority of offerings have combo edges. It's mostly the cool factor that drives knife purchasing, even among Soldiers. I would wager that most of these purchased by actual military folks will wind up being used in warehouses, offices, and motor pools, and not in any tactical scenario. In other words .... the company clerk has more tacti-cool gear than the actual grunts.

I was alittle disappointed. DNT really want to send it back. Think I'm going to get one of the 54 dollar knife and switch the springs out of it

    As stated before, there have been times & places where such a thing would've been a great comfort, some jimping necessary! That said, I've NO idea what the product designers @SOG might've been thinking when building the final "betas" of this tool? Since they've seemed for years to target those in uniform, they've apparently forgotten that most of our mil-guys & mil-gals don't have shoe leather for the palms of their hands! All that observed, as you've correctly done, back in the day I'da bought one quite happily to back up my Ka-Bar!

    You think it has enough jimping ?

  • @MegaTeddybear04
    @MegaTeddybear04 3 года назад +1

    There is a tactical purpose for the jimping, to be used to control an assailant without deploying the blade. But other than that I don't see any reason for that much jimping on a civilian knife. Great review and keep'em coming.

      Hey, Just curious. How would you control an assailant with the jimping? 😅🤣

      @@Pitchenwithagun if you hold the knife in you hand, you can pinch the person nose, ear, upper or bottom lip, finger or knuckle, between your thumb and jimping and can take and lead them to the ground with a little bit of pressure without deploying the blade.

    After 2 weeks this knife locks shut. I can no longer flip it open or use the thumb to open. The release has to be pulled. Once pulled I can jerk it open like my Benchmade knives. If no one can tell me how to fix this I’ll have to return it.
