  • In this video I talk about the new SOG Seal XR folding knife. I had hoped to make it my new EDC, but was too disappointed with what I saw.

You don't know why the pivot screw is there? you can't be serious. Learn how to use the SOG as it destroys the Gerber...
This review actually made me laugh out loud. I have the Seal XR and its unbelievably good and if you ever learn how to use it the way intended, you will as well.
Also, you said you were worried it could fall out your pocket. You could hardly get it out.

  • @NickBEADG

    Few things.
The SOG Seal, and Seal Pup are two very different blades. The Seal Pup is cheap entry level, non American made. The seal XR and FX are American made, cpm s35vn steel, and 1/4in thick blade.
The XR is not an assisted open or automatic and is not meant to be. It's an axis lock style that is super popular right now thanks to Benchmade.
If you are scared of it, use the flipper. If you open it by the axis lock, the weight of the blade does the rest and is super simple and makes for a nice fidget aspect.

That point on the SOG knife that you thought was the spring loaded, blade release button, that's always refered to as the blade's pivot. Almost all folding knives have some sort of pivot hardware with some minor differences. Some makers or designers can have a hidden pivot where the knifes handle or scales can hide/cover the pivot but it has it.
Also, not all knife designs use a spring, torsion bar for assisted opening. In different states and countries assisted and spring loaded opening knives are illegal, no bueno.
The SOG Seal XR relies on the motion of hand to open while moving the lock mechanism. SOG calls the mechanism their XR lock plus it's a flipper design. No mention of assisted opening, or auto opening. The blade locking mechanism is similar/identical to kershaw/ZT flippers plus Benchmades once pattented AXIS lock design. Makes it super easy to open and close and doesnt make it illegal to own for many people.
Advised, before you buy a unknown knife, gun or anything read up on it, watch others youtube videos so when you get it, you won't be disappointed or let down of how it functions... Not the knives fault, bad design or poor decision on the comapny who made it. You bought it thinking it was something else. When i buy a gun, a knife, a tool, a power tool, just about anything, i watch many videos to educate myself and see if i will like it beforehand and or it's what I want.

@knivesarecoolandaxestoo2946 Kershaw makes a lot of spring assisted knifes and many have the flipper index point too. Now that Benchmade has not/did not renew their axis lock blade lock mechanism, other knife makers and manufacturers can use the similar axis lock but call it something else. Kershaw now uses the Axis Lock on a few but I think they call there's dura-lock.

You seem to be really new to knives... like really, really new. I'm not quite sure you grasp the basic differences in lock types, deployment, steel etc. You might want to spend several more years collecting and researching before making videos on knives. It seems like the aesthetics of that SOG just aren't for you personally... as in you alone and you what you alone are looking for in a knife. That is a very common knife type though. Also see Spyderco and Benchmade for manufacturers that make high quality production knives as research.

  • @Kris_Stiletto

It looks like you need more time with Manual Folders. :-) That SOG is way better than your Gerber Auto. :-) If the lock accidentally comes un-locked, does that Auto, with it's weaker, Plunge-Lock, lock type, cut your fingers up if it accidentally folds in on your hand. :-(
Everything you say you don't like about the Seal is just Operator Error. You just need more time with the Seal, to learn how it functions; the SOG XR-Lock is an excellent version of the Benchmade Axis-Lock. What makes I so great is that it includes a Flipper for fast and dependable deployment. And, if the lock ever gives out and it folds while you have a proper grip on it, it won't cut up your digits. The Seal is an exceptional, heavy-duty folder. It's a great design for those that know how to use a "Modern, Manual Folder!"
Assisted Folders are not my personal favorites; I prefer a good Modern, Manual Folder over any Auto or Assisted Side Opening Folders. Most Autos have very weak Folding Knife Lock Types. If you want a super strong Side Opening Folder, you need to get into the Modern Manuals. I would take your XR-Lock SOG Seal over your Gerber, all day long... But, that's just my opinion. Great discussion. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Okay... Through this whole video, I was trying to figure out if this guy was serious or making a comedy video. It was really hard to tell for sure but I feel like this was an honest video with his honest, but inexperienced feedback. I'll have to look at some of your other videos to know for sure. Maybe that is his goal...? In off chance this was an honest video, you are going to find that the 'XR Lock' (AXIS Lock, DuraLock, 'cross-bar' lock, etc...) is one of the most popular and preferred locks on the market today. Also, while an 'auto' is nice at times, but very different than just 'spring assisted', a lot of knife users prefer a manual flipper over a spring-assisted flipper. When you get used to the flipper tab or just using the lock button(s) to open and close the knife, this design will quickly grow on you. Also, there are a lot of places where you're not allowed to carry an 'auto' knife. I'm going to leave it at that and save a bunch of keystrokes in the event you already know all this and are just making a comedy video. If so, GOOD ONE! Lastly, the SOG Seal XR is an awesome BEAST of a flipper knife. If you're wanting to get rid of yours, I'll take it off your hands...

If you like the OTS (Out the side) Autos, get a benchmade Casbah or Benchmade Claymore. The Sog Seal XR is a great knife. It’s a flipper knife. You’re supposed to use that tab on the back to flip it. Kershaw makes a bunch of OTS Autos as well. They call them the “Launch” series.

  • @Xandrosi

Recently bought one. Great knife steel and geometry, but terrible pocket clip. Because the handle is completely textured, including where the clip makes contact, it will tear up your pants pocket unless you gradually open the clip so that it doesn't attach aggressively. I've used folded paper to do this and it now works fine. To your point though, the clip would have been so much better if it deep carried. The handle texture and aggressive jimping makes using the knife for any period without gloves annoying.
I'm also a fan of the Emerson wave design for rapid knife deployment. The thumb hole on the XR allowed me to attach a "mounting cable zip tie" through that hole that works perfectly like the Emerson wave. For this knife, I'd recommend it.

Man. Jeez....ive always wondered why knife conpanies still make crappy assisted opening knives, thinking theres no possible way they could be so popular. But now i see it. They make them for guys like this that have no idea what they are talking about. Truly. You thought the bearing pivot, what the knife runs on, was a button....youre trying to open the knife with the lock like its assisted....youre trying to use the flipper tab with your thumb? This thing can be faster than a automatic knife with one day's worth of practice. If you actually use it like most other flipper knives on the market. Im talking thousands of knives are designed just like this. The assisted knives are made for people that dont really know what they are doing i guess. Imagine buying a kayak and being upset that you have to manually paddle it and it didnt come with a motor. Thats what youre seeing right here, folks.

Making a video bashing a knife that isn’t an automatic knife when clearly if you would have spent 2 seconds reading it never says automatic or spring assisted.
    1. Reason its more expensive its made in the USA and the type of steel seal pup is made out of garbage.
    2. Try just using the axis lock to close it and use the flipper or thumb hole to open.
