    Sog seal xr is a great knife, the knife has to be broke in so you can flip it woth your index finger, I just ise my thumb to open it the first 4 days, after that I can open it easy with my index finger, mine is blade hq version (green handle, stonewash blade) I will say that knife is 10/10, I have a lot of cold steels and I use my sog seal in my front pocket, a voyager clip point in my back pocket and a tai pan its on my truck if things gone wrong

    Drop test @ 2' , 4' , and 6'. I love this knife but in my opinion I don't think this lock will survive
    this test. Omega springs are cheap in this knife. I would love to see this done.

    I had to do a similar mod to my ganzo g720 that knife had the same issue that notch completely fixed the problem. There was another gentleman on RUclips who I had learned that from. It's unfortunate that we have to do that this with premium knife as well. Either way I guess we're not supposed to be batoning with a folder anyhow. But there is always that SHTF moment where you want to be able to rely on the knife you have so I see both sides of the coin thanks for the video because no one tests this knife to any extent on RUclips period so thank you.

      I'm glad you found the video informative. I knew some people would give me crap for batoning folders but I think it's a fair test considering SOG's claim that the lock can take 1500 pounds. I'll probably do it again and make some more people angry 👍

    Yeah I just purchased and received this knife. Out of the box I can't open it with the thumb flipper?? Unless I'm doing it wrong? Am I supposed to lightly engage the XR lock with one finger then flick the thumb flipper?? As of right now it feels completely locked in the closed position. Honestly I'm not familiar with this type of locking mechanism so it could just be my lack of understanding how it works to open and close it. I own a lot of knives but they are all frame,liner and compression locks,button locks.

    • @CuttingEdgeAction
      @CuttingEdgeAction  3 месяца назад

      The knife is far too tight for the thumb hole to be of any use at all. Even the flipper is barely usable without wearing gloves. You're not doing it wrong, this knife is just designed poorly.
      Edit: If you pull the XR lock back, you can flick your wrist to open or close the blade. Release the lock as the blade approaches the open or closed position. See my short on the Benchmade axis lock for a demonstration.

    The lock up on mine was solid but the edge grind was trash. Had to take it a belt grind then strop and redo the whole profile. Not something you should have to do for the price ranger.

    I almost lost a finger due to an Axis lock failure. I will NEVER use an Axis lock knife or any knife with an Axis lock style. It's Tri-Ad Lock for me, or nothing.

      Great choice. My first Cold Steel was the Recon 1 with a clip point and S35VN. I dug the blade into a tree and hung my full body weight from the pivot in my review!

    I wonder if that bar would ‘wear in’ that spot on the blade over time and fully engage. Not likely with the time you spent using a diamond file on it.

    • @CuttingEdgeAction
      @CuttingEdgeAction  2 года назад

      Eventually, it might have worn down and worked correctly. That being said, it should've been correct out of the box for $220.

      @@CuttingEdgeAction I've been playing with mine for a few months now and the lock has broken in for sure. I have near zero partial engagement now. It's interesting and really shouldn't happen but it did and now I have full engagement. That really shouldn't occur with hardened steel but maybe the springs broke in (spring heat treat issues I've heard)?? I don't know but it fully engages now.

    • @CuttingEdgeAction
      @CuttingEdgeAction  Год назад

      Glad to hear it. After all the inconsistencies I've had with SOG I don't recommend them anymore. When they're good they're great but when they're bad they're dangerous. I've been playing with my Terminus XR for over a year and the lock still doesn't fully engage.

      @@CuttingEdgeAction interesting.. I'd never considered SOG before but LOVE their designs.. if they could bring QC up to the level of their amazing design teams they would be a force in the industry. However they've sold ownership to some outdoor company now so I don't see it happening. You have Toor, Microtech and other microbrands taking designs and quality to new levels. SOG was a titan when they made knives for SOF sourced from Japan. Too bad they couldn't keep the name and quality.

    Honestly tragic a knife north of $200 has to be substantially modified to be useful, when a $40 cold steel sr1 light is rock solid every time right from the box. An insult to consumers. Sorry you wasted your money dude, but you did it for all of us.

    • @CuttingEdgeAction
      @CuttingEdgeAction  2 года назад

      I would've expected a knife this huge with a bar lock to split the wood no problem, but apparently that's not a given. Cold Steel's Tri-Ad lock is basically in a league of its own for this kind of work. I'll be reviewing the Code 4 soon.

    • @CuttingEdgeAction
      @CuttingEdgeAction  Год назад +1

      The flipper tab on mine is just about useless as well. The only way I can get it to flip open with the tab is by grabbing the top of the tab with the second segment of my index finger and pulling down extemely hard. It'll tear your skin up if you're not wearing gloves.

    Use a bit of common sense and buy yourself a fixed blade. If you insist on batoning with a folding knife buy a cold steel, the triad lock will hold up a bit better. I watch knife content for useful information, not how to abuse a perfectly good knife.

      I have several fixed blades. My usual batoning knife is the Cold Steel AK47. I addressed all your points in the first video. This video is for entertainment. That being said, SOG's lock still failed when it shouldn't have and now it works properly.
