Paragon Warlock Gravity Knife by Asheville Steel - Review
So fast I thought it was an OTF for a second
It's the hardest firing OTS I've ever handled.
I bought one of these used for a good price, it is the one that is branded as “Studies & Observations Group”, instead of just SOG like the newer ones. I had a super easy time removing the pivot, but I think that’s because I watched this first and I was ready/anticipated the nightmare 🤣. I also bought a new one to have as a backup. I sharpened it at 17 degrees and it took a beautiful edge. I can also confirm my example has a superb heat treat as a 60 HRC file did not scratch it.
🔥🔥
Minute 06:06, opening the blade can be made easier. I got several CS knives, also these blackened Recon 1 models. Open it, you´ll find moving parts/surfaces of these parts, painted/coated. Not ideal. Remove the coating at critical + moving points. Sand them with high grit sand paper (I went high to 5000 grit, like a mirror). Oil + grease are your friends. You can also work the flat spring, which brings a lot of tension on the lockbar (there are also good vids on youtube) so it loosens some power (but is still totally functional).
Awesome. I'll probably make a video on this.
@@CuttingEdgeAction In the meantime, I have tried another way to improve the knife's function. After disassembling, cleaning, grinding/polishing and reassembling with oil/grease, heat the blade and the area at the pivot point with a hairdryer. Now open and close the knife very often. This way the lubricants are distributed even better because they are warm and smoother. After that, the knife cools down again, everything is well distributed and runs very smoothly. I have now done the same with over 10 of my Cold Steel knives and can say that there is a clearly noticeable improvement. Maybe what I have tried is technically or physically nonsense, but it works for me. 🙂
My ESC is a GP035. I also carry a Victonox Explorer for the accessories. To me, carrying the GP035 is as close to carrying a straight edge as i can get. The thin blade is not for SHTF survival but could be useful in a stress situation.
I almost lost a finger due to an Axis lock failure. I will NEVER use an Axis lock knife or any knife with an Axis lock style. It's Tri-Ad Lock for me, or nothing.
What's your favorite knife with the Tri-Ad? I'm a huge fan of the Storm Cloud.
@@CuttingEdgeAction My Recon 1 Spear Point S35VN ⚔️💪
Great choice. My first Cold Steel was the Recon 1 with a clip point and S35VN. I dug the blade into a tree and hung my full body weight from the pivot in my review!
I have and love my bugout but what I don’t like about it is how light it is. People act like they have to have a knife the weight of a piece of paper like a few extra grams is really going to make that big of a difference. It’s like carrying a few extra quarters 🤷♂️ 😂. What I love about a pocket knife is it’s feel and weight of it like I have something of quality but my bugout just feels cheap when it WAS NOT 😂😂
Agreed. Grivory is plenty strong, but it doesn't provide the quality feel of any knife with metal liners/handles. The lightest thing I find myself carrying with any regularity is a Hogue Deka in carbon fiber.
@@CuttingEdgeAction exactly. I not too long received the mini bugout mesa red grivory and I get what you’re saying. I can understand a 🔫 made from carbon fiber or polymer vs steel and the weight reduction vs functionality but a knife I don’t really get. I want that weight you get from metal or wood scales with a quality feel. I never understood the whole weight reduction in something that barely weighs anything to begin with 🤷♂️ but to each their own. I just wish they and other knife companies start back making knives that are built to work, built to last and built to withstand the test of time instead of this lightweight nonsense but I may be in the minority so that’ll probably not happen 🤷♂️
Im doing it slowly and about done learning it best one yet
Got mine coming in the next few days. Will be my first OTF(I live in Illinois so it’s illegal to carry them which is why I never thought of buying one sooner). I got the Cutlery Shoppe exclusive one with the orange handle and blackwash blade. Really sucks that we can’t openly carry these cuz now that I’ve started looking at more OTF’s I’d love to grow a collection of them but I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying them on a regular basis. Frickin Illinois with their goofy knife laws
Just got into the Reate gravity knives in the last few months and instantly fell in love with them. First I got the utility knife and after playing with that thing nonstop for a week I knew I needed the real deal. Now I have one of the new two tone version in elmax and a few weeks ago also bought one of the gmascus versions in elmax. Only wish I’d have gotten into these earlier cuz there are a handful of really nice looking ones that are sold out but I wish I could still buy. The Burl micarta is one I’d love to get my hands on.
One of the few people I’ve ever seen thumb flick a Cormorant lol. When they have that oval slot it just feels so awkward trying to flick off the thumb , at least for me
My 666 👍😂
Nice! The other corner on the paper is gone too 😅
Is that p.m. to g10, or is it FRN? I've only ever known that style of handle to be frn, but if they make that style in g10, I'm all over it.
G10 is the standard for the PM2. Perhaps you're confusing it with another Spyderco model?
@@CuttingEdgeAction g10 is the standard for the g10 model for sure, but that model has flat G10 scales. There is a version called the lightweight version which has the handle that looks just like the one that you have, with material removed from it to make that cool spider coat pattern. those ones are made from FRN for sure. I've just always thought that they looked cool, but I would like g10 way more than frn. If yours is g10, and it's in that style, I'm super crazy jealous because I didn't know that that was available
@@CuttingEdgeAction I just did a tad bit of research on the internet and found out that the handle you have is the standard issue g10 handle for the magnacut version of the pm2. Needless to say, I'm super crazy jealous lol
I just double-checked. As far as I can tell there is no PM2 with (stock) FRN handles. There's also not a lightweight PM2.
@@CuttingEdgeAction Is yours a pm2 salt?
Great video. Thanks
You're most welcome.
What’s your preference between the pm2 salt and manix 2 salt?
PM2 all day. The spring in the ball bearing lock is a little too stiff in my opinion.
@@CuttingEdgeAction I have a cruwear para 3 and LW para 3 right now and wanted a spider that’s a little bigger - I was looking at the manic 2 and pm2
It's a decent knife. Too bad it's made in China.
I used to have one of the these, a blue one over here in Australia. I unfortunately lost it when I had people over to help me move house. Do you guys know a sneaky squirrel way of being able to import another one at all? They are really difficult to get through customs and I don't want to spend that much money just for it to get confiscated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Craig.
It looks like you might be able to get one from cuttingedgeknives.com.au - the site is legit but shipping coukd take up to a month from the reviews I just read.
@@CuttingEdgeAction you rock !! Thank you so much!!
man i want a pm2 or military 2... just cant justify it now im not in sheeping and receiving person
If you’re gonna get one I’d go with the Mili 2. I have both and by far prefer the Mili.
S90v pm2, m4 manix 2, m4 benchmade 940 and bailout
Is your 940 in natural G10?
That magnacut osborne that dropped this year is sweet.. carry a s30v version with purple g10 and green titanium hardware.. love that thing.
as a british person i can say the first one is the best
Legal carry though? For me it’s the Spyderco ukpk lc200n version, definitely my vacation in Europe knife, and anywhere really since it makes a good beach knife too!
Buy a hatchet to split wood. Save your folder from damage. I would not consider the SOG to have a defect. The knife was not designed for batonning wood. That’s why they make hatchets.
I don’t know why, but this is my favorite trick. It’s just so satisfying when the perfect thumb movement lets the handle slide around it perfectly with nothing stopping it. Way too fun 🔥
WHAT WAS THAT ROLLOVER THAT WAS GOOFY AS HELL
This video is over 2 years old.
@@CuttingEdgeAction tbh still
Yeah I just purchased and received this knife. Out of the box I can't open it with the thumb flipper?? Unless I'm doing it wrong? Am I supposed to lightly engage the XR lock with one finger then flick the thumb flipper?? As of right now it feels completely locked in the closed position. Honestly I'm not familiar with this type of locking mechanism so it could just be my lack of understanding how it works to open and close it. I own a lot of knives but they are all frame, liner and compression locks, button locks.
The knife is far too tight for the thumb hole to be of any use at all. Even the flipper is barely usable without wearing gloves. You're not doing it wrong, this knife is just designed poorly. Edit: If you pull the XR lock back, you can flick your wrist to open or close the blade. Release the lock as the blade approaches the open or closed position. See my short on the Benchmade axis lock for a demonstration.
I am so glad I found this video. I have tried for a week now and ruined two Wiha T6 bits. I am pretty pissed. I spent upwards of $60 for drivers and bits and still can't get it apart.
Sorry Scott. At least you know why you're having so much trouble now! 😂
Bro grabbed the bite handle
You need too to do some of the tricks safely
How to open a knife for dummies
🔥🔥
The pivot screw is 2 screws and a barrel. One side is just on there tight. I had to disassemble and heat the screw and barrel up to loosen it
I've never struggled so much to disassemble a simple knife like this. It could all be avoided if the liners were keyed properly.
@@CuttingEdgeAction yeah it's definitely not for the faint of heart. But after I cleaned it and got it back together it's working better than ever. Just took some time and patience
I don't think it's a defect, it needs broken in period. However if need to baton with a folder do it on a pivot with the lock disengage!
both are overpriced.
I'm a big Benchmade fan but you won't hear any arguments against that from me. The pricing is especially ludicrous on the mini.
😼🔥
Thank You.....😮
You're welcome.
Small hands with short thumbs must be an Asian demonstrator.
I'm 6' and white with average hands. This knife is huge.
🔥🔥
Got the same Deka Scorpion. Love the knife,.my literal only complaint is that it's designed too small
I usually prefer a slightly smaller knife because I carry 2 phones in the same pocket (work iPhone and personal Pixel 7 Pro). This size is perfect for my needs.
I also carry the mini freek, I like the look of the mini deep carry
The Mini Freek is great. It packs such a punch for a small-medium knife and the carbon work is superb.
I buy knives for the steel these days. This might have to be my first Magnacut
You won't be disappointed. Magnacut is excellent and the fit and finish on this knife is superb at this price point. - CuttingEdgeAction from my other account.
I had a 9400, I wish I never traded it
I've never tried a 9400 but I have a Claymore and a Casbah and they're both excellent.
No hate but I’d recommend holding it closer to the pivots and try doing it sideways instead of vertical but your still pretty good at them
Bro I took it apart cleaned everything and it's still not good
Drop test @ 2' , 4' , and 6'. I love this knife but in my opinion I don't think this lock will survive this test. Omega springs are cheap in this knife. I would love to see this done.
I think it will survive as well. I'll shoot the video this week.
My edc right here. One solid asf auto. Only knife that competes against this one is the 9400 auto osborne. These are my 2 favorite knives by benchmade of all time.
I haven't tried the 9400 but it's definitely on my list to pick up.
I'm excited to sell my benchmade claymore and upgrade to this! Next month I'll be 26 years old I'm excited this is the only thing I want!!!
Does anyone's button feel gritty or is that normal??
Mine feels nice and smooth. How long have you had it? Have you applied any lubricant?
@CuttingEdgeAction 1 year and yes I have 1 time a month every month and I had cleaned and reapplied lube
If you're comfortable with it you could disassemble the knife and fully clean it. Remember to open the blade first so the spring isn't under tension. It's possible there's just a few grains of very fine sand or dirt in the mechanism. If you don't want to do it yourself you could reach out to Benchmade.
@CuttingEdgeAction yeah I tried I didn't know how to send it off
But yeah I don't have any extra money right now to get the Benchmade tool kit I wish
I see why you thought that, but that's not how the thumbstuds work, those are just grooves, not threads. The flathead allows to to remove it and reverse it, but you can't adjust how much it sticks out.
Thanks for the info. I suppose I should've tested it myself before making that claim. I'll put a note in the description.
It's hard to justify the price on the Adamas because you can get the cold steel recon 1 for $120. And the recon 1 has stainless s35vn steel and the tri-ad lock, which can last multiple lifetimes and take way more abuse.
That's a good point of comparison, but the Adamas has much thicker blade stock, liners, and the axis lock. While you can definitely use the tri-ad lock with one hand, it's a lot more difficult than the axis lock.
@@CuttingEdgeActionI like the Adamas. I'm probably going to buy one. I don't baton with pocket knives. But I don't know if I fully trust the lock on the Adamas. Has the lock ever failed you on the Adamas in any scenario?
If you don't baton with it the axis lock is rock solid. I've only ever broken 1 omega spring on my custom bugout by flipping it open and closed several thousand times. Even if an omega spring fails in a dire situation you can use a pebble or twig to jam the crossbar in place, effectively making the knife a fixed blade. If you're forced to baton with an axis lock you'll want to leave it unlocked and let the handle hang so the hammering force is only applied to the blade and not to the crossbar.
@@CuttingEdgeAction Good to know. Thank you
@@johnnyeas1431hey just wanted to let you know you can baton with almost any pocket knife but you just have to know how to do it! Watch a video on it, really cool shit bro
For a knife made in the usa it still has problems. And most americans bitch about knives made overseas yet has better performance 😂
I like my 06 auto serrated, had it a very long time
