Tyler is so generous--he wants the Car Ninja to also be a multiple-yacht owner!
Ninja is his brother in law so why not spread it around and keep it in the family. Ninja married to Tyler's sister
@@smithjohn3080 did not know that
@@smithjohn3080 what?😂
Is ninja married to hoovies brother or sister ?
@@smithjohn3080 Dont Hoovies wife originated from Vietnam or something?
Hoovie! Once you assemble the dream team, don't flip it immediately. Take it to a Pebble Beach and feature it in your own booth
with the quality he's buying, Le Concourse La Lemons would be a more fitting venue....
I wouldn't flip these cars ever. Especially not the E39 M5, man that thing is beautiful when it's in good condition.
Sell set “will not separate” 😂
100% agree. I thought about the concourse cuz yeah they might be beat up, but it'd be badass
Please I will come from florida
As a former E39 M5 owner in the UK some thoughts to consider:
1) What state is the double vanos in? The system also adds a lovely rattle on start up hot or cold when it's tired. The Vanos can be rebuilt and for sensible money
2) Timing chain and guides can be done in situ if you remove the cooling pack.
3) If you are taking the engine out seriously consider a full bottom end refresh as worn bearings can accelerate bore wear, and if the bores glaze, that's the end of the block because being all alloy with nikasil bore coating there are no machining options and there are no new S62 blocks out there. Also get new engine mounts, they're dynamic and often have long given up being dynamic by now.
4) Front bumper shell is the same as the stock sport models, only the lower grille is different. (I had an '02 E39 530d Sport Touring before the M5). A good used front sport bumper shouldn't be mad money!
5) Unless those after market dampers are high end seriously considering getting the oe spec alloy bodied, they are seriously good bits of kit.
6) While the rear diff is out for a seal refresh check the state of the bearings and the clutch plates in it. Mine were shagged. The gearbox output seal needed doing too as when the prop came out so did all the gearbox oil with it!
8) Check the wiring loom where it goes through the hinges into the trunk lid. The PVC sheaths on the wires go brittle, crack and then the copper wires inside work harden and snap leading to all sorts of fun and games...and small fires too...
9) For your amusement I still have a genuine E39 M5 rear diffuser...one with a removable centre section for the genuine BMW M5 Westfalia removable swan neck tow bar that I also still happen to have! Unfortunately, like me, they're in the UK...
I still miss my M5 today, 5 years after selling it, it was an event each time I went out for a drive. But what I don't miss is the daft 'M' tax for parts that weren't exactly unique to the car...
I second a full engine rebuild. Would be silly to spend all that and not do it.
Crush it ...
If I recall correctly, Ninja was a BMW certified Master Tech working at a BMW dealership for a decade or more before opening his own $Million shop specializing in German vehicles. I'm sure he, being the decent guy he is, appreciates the advice.
Almost all correct - The front bumpers are very rare in good shape in the US. The M-tech body kits were not available in the US outside of the M5 or a 2003 540i M-sport.
Thankfully the Ninja has rebuilt many a burned up old vanos system!
M539 restorations: Caaammmminng up! Hoovie just bought another cheap M5 for hoopty fleet! On Project Raleigh , we check for oil leaks after TÜV inspection.
Every proper BMW nerd here to promote Sreten. Love it!
@@ShedLifeUK What about George Austers?
Compared to M539 restorations this channel looks kinda like garbage xD
I can almost hear Sreten of M539 Restorations screaming in absolute HORROR all the way in Frankfurt, Germany at the sheer amount of neglect and abuse that this E39 has suffered through!
I can only imagine how thankful he is that this is not his M5. because of the sun roof. :)
Tag him! He needs to see this BMW xD
He would have thrown his dessert in disgust.
@@IliaLAB yes, we know Sreten loves his Slick tops!
You know he’d really bring this car back though.
This is the Hoovie’s Garage tat caused us to start watching way back when. We’ve got a desirable car that has seen better days and the price for which he paid is reflected. A car that is attainable for most of us. Hoovie uses a trusted mechanic to restore it to its former glory all while he documents and shares and Hoovie can turn around and sell it for retail value, if he so chooses. I don’t know if this is profitable for him from a views perspective, but it’s what I love.
This is what made his channel for sure
I fully agree. These videos are his roots.
True he is the hooptie god
It's a proven formula... I think he knows this and hopefully it will stay this way...
The exotics are nice and all but i imagine most of the viewers are regular folks like you and me...
I agree with you -- this is what makes his channel work for me. I assume he makes enough money from RUclips views that he makes a profit in the end, even if he only breaks even, or even loses a bit, on the car itself. Plus the value of E39s is only going up from here. I think with this one, he'll be good, even if he has to spend a bit more than it's worth right now.
"two, three hundred bucks?
" five / six grand"
THAT should be the title of Hoovies autobiography
"Title of his sex tape" --Jake Peralta
You need the guy from M539 Restorations…he’s got his second e39 M5 and is a master at working on all things BMW.
3rd m5*
Might check this guy out I just bought a regular 5 series in great condition. So far lol
To see how an E39 SHOULD be taken care of, M539 Restorations is the go-to channel. Sreten is a total sorcerer when it comes to anything BMW.
M539 collaboration would be awesome!
@@jackblackdeath With the Ninja, since Tyler couldn't even change spark plugs...
Oh yes...
That guy is unrelenting, no one else comes close to him. He really is the real deal.
This guy is legit
Hoovie never learns. Ever. Thank god.
It can't be the dumbest automotive channel in all of RUclips if the presenter and the owner of the channel is actually doing smart stuff. With all jokes aside im actually happy he is spending his time and money on saving some of these cars, while the companies themselves always pushes on forward, Tyler decides to save their gems they already forgot about.

My fluorescent brother from another mother I'm so happy and excited to see that you're steering slightly away from exotic and super cars and falling back to your bread and butter. That car is beautiful and you're going to save a beautiful car. Seriously one of the most elegant and sporty at the same time sedans of the early 2000's. Respect big bro.
"And you're saving a gorgeous car."
Realest shit I've heard all day
I'm doing my own hooptie rescue mission. Just bought an 1986 Porsche 944 turbo. It has rod knock, needs brakes, tires, cv boot, power steering, electrical work, and cosmetic fixes. Fortunately for me, even with all that, I should still be way under retail for it. 944 turbos are stupidly expensive.
The Car Ninja is my favourite side character in this Anime.

These amazing cars are only going to appreciate, and in a big way. Anyone that's ever driven an E39, especially the M5, knows what it's like to have driven the ultimate of The Ultimate Driving Machines.
I'm trying to keep a 240,000 mile 01 530i Sport alive for this exact reason. Love that car man! I picked it up for $500 from some guy in Wyoming. Motor and trans are great if you ignore the normal BMW oil leaks, flat spots on all 4 tires from being drug onto a tow truck or something. Suspension...needs work. Lots of sloppy ball joints, and bushings. Not to mention I'm a bimmer noob and jump started it from the battery and that made the navigation screen backlight go out and temporarily got it stuck in German and metric. But, I'm a mechanic with another vehicle and I'm willing to do the work because I love that damn Bavarian bastard.

Never change Tyler
He makes money on repair videos. Pay attention.
His wife and this BMW have something in common.
@@clewless_1der idk, I've had 5 different bmw cars and two motorcycles and I still make fun of the cars. The motorcycles have been absolute tanks that just go and go and don't need much beyond basic maint. The cars however can be a bit of a pit. They are amazing to drive when everything is right though and is why I keep buying them. My two E60 v8 sedans were just sublime up until the 100k mark, then the repair bills can start to add up pretty quickly. My e46 3 series have all been a bit more reliable as long as you know to keep an eye on the coolant system and do the proper upgraded parts. Plastic cooling systems don't make sense to me but that's what BMW uses so you're going to have failures.
@@clewless_1der Anyone can afford a BMW.....It's keeping them in order that gets expensive. Like most German rides they are also the most rewarding when everything is well.
@@clewless_1der priorities.. lol.
I like the auto-open sunroof. Just opens when it feels you need some sun.
IT KNOWS! I wonder if that happens during a thunderstorm too.
Seems to be linked to a 2nd gear pull, it was an option back then.
The sunroof doesn't open.
The sunroof *cover* opens.
The sunroof is still closed because you can see the reflection of the glass.
yeah, @9:50 and it even does that with a slipping clutch!
Lets me know when I'm going to fast in mine.
Most people "I'm gonna get a bunch of people together to take a picture of the whole 2001 BMW lineup"
Hoovie "I want a picture of the whole 2001 BMW lineup, I guess I have to buy them all!"
I wish him good luck with this. From painful personal experience I know that E39’s and especially those with V8s are never truly “sorted.” There are only brief moments of enjoyment between expensive repairs. If you have the cash or in this case video views, and/or the time, skills and tools to keep them up they are IMHO some of the very best cars ever made. Ultimate Driving Experience, for sure. Ultimate Ownership Experience, probably not for a lot of enthusiasts.
Mine's been fine..
Collecting the whole line of a particular car is ambitious! I collected 1931 Ford Model A's once. Almost killed me.
That's a lot of Model A's.
I WISH Hoovie was more into Classics like that
I would love to see the collection!if you still have any/ a video of them

That's funny, my dad also collected ford model a's of that era when he was in his late teens and 20s. He still has one of them
Honestly I love these train wrecks better than the garage queens he always hope to score. Looking forward to seeing Johnny working his ass off removing that engine and finding more "while were there" parts. Thanks Hoovie for the Countach anniversary video it was nice to see how the other half live.
Hoovie wants it fully sorted, so "while we're there" is definitely happening.

I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS VIDEO! I was a couple additional Lambo or Bentley videos away from unsubscribing. This is a project I could afford to take on, but with three kids soon to be in college, I have no delusions of owning an exotic vehicle, so I stopped watching those a while ago. Good job returning to what made this channel great (and grow); I can't wait to see how this project turns out!
For the love of god, send this car to Sreten at M539 restorations!
Lol when Petar (the guy who found the manual E60 M5) sent it all Sreten was saying was German swear words lol I can imagine Sreten saying all of that and more to Tyler
Sreten would do an awesome job. The guy is a machine and knows these M5s backwards.
WIZARD: NEVER buy any car with over 150,000 miles
HOOVIE: THIS is my 160,000 mile BMW
I once owned a V8 E39. never again will I own a BMW
Why I read THIS in Doug's voice tho
I bought an E36 325TDS with 150K miles... I added another 140K+ to it.
Most trouble free car I ever owned. Only thing that wore out apart from the usual tyres and brakes was one alternator and a gear selector cable.
Finally got rid of it when the diesel fuel injector packed up. It would have cost more than I originally paid for the car to fix!
The only car you can buy with over 150k is a Toyota (and maybe a Honda or Mazda)
@@minorityofone1510 same 😂
Love the BMW content. Keep it coming!
You're the only one who could buy junk cars like that and at least break even. Everyone in my area sells junk and wants twice what it's worth. It's a huge undertaking that you've taken on. You're my roll model Hoover! Good luck to you and yours! Can't wait for the next video!
I love how he can come back from the most insane bougie Car Week events and still have the mindset to do these sorts of projects. Kudos!
Not hard at all when you have a good budget and are a glutton for punishment. My ADHD brain would do the same but I'd have 40 half finished projects and suddenly get them all done then start the process all over again. 😅
this may be someone's "bougie car" someday. thanks to guys like hoovies they make someone else's dream come true
As a fellow owner I would recommend that for the clutch you get a clutch and flyweel for a 850CSi (v12), (correction) it is a direct fit and UUC sells the kit and its a lot stronger than standard clutch the car came with.
@Man ne mistake on my part, I checked my receipts and it is for an 850CSi
This is a hoopie that definitely deserves saving! Those M5's were peak 4dr sedan driving experience. I will always remember the marketing BMW did with Clive Owen for the cars that years with their Driver video series. The one with the M5 had Madonna in it and some pretty awesome driving as well.
That video was called "Star" and was one of the best BMW short films of the early 2000s.
Bmw E39 once saved my life and that is why I've had three more after that!! Maybe one day I'll get the almighty M5 but for now I'll enjoy watching this one being reborn. I cannot wait for you to have the perfect BMW 2001 lineup, there are a lot of dream cars in that lineup.
Oddly coincidentally only fans changed their content once Hoovie announced he’s opening a page 🤔
They must have been "scared straight" with the thought of the possible content. lol
Atta go Hoovie! This is the content that I came to see!!!
Hope he does not drag this one to the breakers
As he said, you're saving a beautiful car and it'll probably fetch more than retail since, if you sell it, people will know the hard work has been done.
I daily one, I have dailyed it for 5 years. Stock except for a tune and a rocking stereo, Atlanta City driving. It is parked outside. It gets terrible gas milage. If you like driving, it is fantastic. Maintenance and repair is about $3500 per year. No depreciation, No car payment. and it is a rocket ship. Smooth and fast.
I've owned an E39 M5 for 7 years. I'd bet my house that he won't be able to get it right and stay under $20,000 for the car and work.
Ahundredpercent
Depends on the Ninja and “Hoovie prices”. I had one too, for six years, and you can fix them properly without spending that money. Just can’t take it to the dealer!
You forget that he gets "hoovie prices" I believe he will stay well below 20k

I’ve have a 2003 BMW series estate ex highways car.Runs amazing with 225,000 miles. All original interior and was well maintained.
The ABS controller failure was common after people tried to clean the engine bay with a pressure cleaner. I recall all the warnings fellow members would give on the M5 board.
I think they can go bad due to their location next to the exhaust manifold as well
They go bad regardless.
I never washed my engine bay and mine shit itself.
I enjoy this mechanic's analysis on the cars he's going to fix.
I worked at a bmw dealership for 12 years as a appreciate and mechanic I learned on these cars they are so much fun to drive but so garage mechanically when they are old

The way M5 prices are going it may still be under retail by the time he's done with it.
I'm really glad you found 1 in silver. This will be fun. I can't wait to see them in 1 place. If you ever put them on display I might drive up w my son, it's only 5 hrs!
Some good knowledge from the car ninja! He checked abs sensor and diagnosed the module which is correct. I went to a BMW 'specialist' who wanted to change sensors and wheel bearings. It's the module everytime the exhaust heat kills it over 150000 miles
Brings back so many memories of my E39 M5 - stay away from the replica bumpers unless you have a good body shop because the replicas are off in size. They might have gotten better over the years, but it will need some shaping. You can get the trim pieces on Ebay in true Hoovie fashion. The other cosmetic issues can be had there as - all in great/mint condition at times. The timing guides are something to def address, but while you are in there....might as check the VANO$ along with the oil leaks. My ABS did the same thing and is pretty easy to address. This is the perfect Hooptie rescue mission!
My M5 bit the dust when someone thought would be fun to run a red light.......:( I will live vicariously on through you in this project as family life prevent me from getting back into the game
One last note - Be on the look out for two issues you WILL see with a higher mileage M5, MAF and SAS failures. Yes, you can replace them...or you can just tune the car :)
“Typo” do you often buy hand grenades after some one else has pulled the pin
Back when BMWs were still looking good. My brother had a regular 523i e39. That car is still around (as many of my familys old cars becuase we are very bad at scrapping or selling our old cars :D) and still starts and drives even after standing still for like 10+ years. Great car. Still looks modern. Same colour as your m5. That silver never gets old. Good cars that feels so good to drive. My brothers 523i e39 is automatic and as a daily driver it cant get much better. Also one of the first cars i ever drow after getting my drivers licence.

Also the 7 serie of that year.
The E34 is much better looking. The E39 is so common.

That car is ABSOLUTELY is worth saving and will continue to appreciate, excellent purchase..
Crazy, I was watching another of your videos (first time on your channel), the Apollo 911 return, and this card came up at the end. I'm on my 3rd E39 M5 as a daily driver. Most definitely, all of these and the f80 m3 is the peak of Bmw.
I miss mine a lot - got it in 2012 when they were really cheap. But there was always as sense that if anything even slightly major went wrong it would bankrupt me. Outside electrochrome mirror glass alone was £280 to replace after a stone was pinged through it. And a simple exhaust bracket - £80! Once the suspension started getting noisy I knew it was time that someone else took it on, but I had three glorious years of the M5 V8 soundtrack!
